    Scott, I just wanted to tell you that it warms my heart to see you and your boy working side by side. We lost our 36 year old son two years ago and I miss spending time with him.

      Makes me think, we need some sort of database for PROPER mechanics that can and will work on schoolbuses, coaches etc. There are quite a few running around so even mobile mechanics might be worthwhile.

      Between their age, their (now) relative rarity, disappearance of large outfits operating fleets, I think it's normal to see this knowledge go away. It being a hobby for GBM, his ability to dig up documentation and his exposure he's been able to keep himself involved as opposed to a regular mechanic shop that would probably see one every few months.
      Hell I've had a 1989 Japanese car and even with all the manuals I could find, the dealership guys were scratching their heads because almost nobody was left old enough to have worked on one and know the quirks.
      And I'm not even touching on the subject of hack jobs he's shown us, that's another issue with today's part changers, limited diagnosing abilities or general lack of interest in their trade.

      @@macbeth2354 Agreed, a true mechanic is a lost art but Scott is fixing sloppy, lazy & dangerous work. I work on cars as a hobby now and the ignorance I see is amazing. Who thinks that pushing a battery cable into a terminal without crimping it is a good idea? (found the other day) There was electrical tape around it. 🙂

      @@macbeth2354 Dealership mechanics are since the worst of all. Anyone who is actually a competent mechanic leaves the dealership and goes out on their own. Dealerships almost always hire from schools and training classes and the kids are usually young and the only wrenching skills the person has came from the school. So there is a constant cycle of poorly trained kids getting jobs at dealerships and the ones who actually learn on the job and get good at their job just to go out on their own.
      People that are truly mechanically inclined can literally work on anything since they can observe and understand how things work.

    It amazes me how any shop can be so incompetent as the one that worked on the oil pan and other FUBARed assemblies and stay in business if not having gotten sued by someone who suffered a serious accident cause by their incompetence.
    Good luck for the owner to have bought his bus to you for repair.

      this is crazy its simple truck and bus reapairs wtf are commercial compaines doing to train thier staff. it least pople bying these machines needs to learn alot more about how they work before buyingand driving them.. whiles its a pain almost everything on the roads in europe must have an annual inpsection the bigger it is the more they check. imagine if this bus had a wreak im guessing the insurance would not have paid out due ot the poor condition.

      @@gavinferguson the craziest part is that only 15 states in the whole country have annual/biannual testing regimes,technically this truck was legal and could have stayed on the road indefinitely,,America is so far behind european countries despite having heavier rigs with much higher speed limits in most states,,you can kill a whole load of people in a bus in this condition

      you have to be a well trained , qualified and experienced engineer to do the work of maintenance and repair properly and with competance , most are just parts fitters with minimum actual skills and knowledge , i have seen it so many times where big companies dont train the staff correctly , gone are the days when i was trained and had pride in the work i did , now its all about making a profit and nevermind the inconvenience to customers etc

    I wish I could be there working with you and your son , I retired at 62 and am taking care of 2 edely parents . I really miss the busses and the work . I honestly cam say there were only a few great mechanics I worked with and was very fortunate in that aspect . I'm from Pittsburgh and I'll say it . Yins are great !!!

    Folks, gotta tell ya that if I owned a bus and was having problems with it I'd find a way to get it to ya'll. It really IS something to listen to your customers testimonials on the quality of your work when your finished with their projects. It is REALLY awesome to hear someone say something positive about their auto mechanic. "Keep on keepin' on " guys!!!!

    Dont think I've ever seen an air tank with a ball valve on it on a truck in my working life. The amount of water that came out showed it hadnt been regularly drained and as for that air dryer blow off that was full of grease, wow. Just amazes me how bad 'professional mechanics' are been on this bus. Glad your sorting it for them.

    This has to be one of the best vids you have posted thus far. I would love to hear you ramble further on just what you were facing with this one, how you could be confident enough you caught all the issues to send it, and so on. I don't own a bus and never plan to, but people as good at what they do as you keep me glued to the screen, thx.

    If those steering gears are designed the sameway automotive ones are, they tend to wear in the middle ( wheels straight) when adjusting for that wear you need to turn the wheels lock to lock to check for binding in turns.
    Adjustment should always be done at the hard over left and or right position.
    After doing that If the worm gear is worn so as to be unacceptable in the straight position its time for a rebuild...

    Stumbled onto your vids couple of weeks ago-as a young lad of 17 I cut my mechanic teeth on Buffalos , Fish Bowls, a couple of MC-7's & what were then brand new MC-8's. Now semi retired after 30 years in aviation MX-you Sir are one class act. Kudos. It warms my soul to see someone of your caliber bringing back those old girls.

    I use to drive a Marathon xl a working girl ( with seats ) in up state NY. I love to drive her she is a good working vehicle. It cost a lot of hard money to keep a coach working and pass NY dot. to see this one needing to do work that some one cobbled up well theirs no words to tell how i feel !!! I had a rear go out on me ( with a full bus and had it checked before the trip !!! )on 17 just coming out of NY city and again less then a year latter !!!

    Great to see the bus all sorted. What was done with the mismatching caster was the double adjustable side brought to 3 degrees to match. Some drift vehicles run as much as 15 degrees

    This is why you always have to have a good shop or mechanic to work on your stuff. You would never let someone leave with a bus etc that was unsafe and all this had wrong with it showed how unsafe it was before. The owner si so releived also you can see and hear it. Might have cost a bit but now he knows he has a safe and legal ride and dont have to worry about what the thing will do if someone does silly things near him the bus/RV will act in a relyable and predictable way. As always your work speaks for your professionalism and your concern for your customers and their safety.

      The really big elephant in the room here is the fact that the previous owner didn’t properly maintain this bus. Any large diesel vehicle requires consistent preventative maintenance, as well as normal routine. The more shortcuts that are made, the more expensive they will be to undo all of the normal stuff.

      A Bus coach conversion is a lot less expensive in the long run than any fiberglass motorhome. Why do you think the transportation industry have been using these for decades.

    The shop I managed had a lift that would pick those buses up. That big lift was outside but once you were underneath the thing you couldn't get wet if it rained. It is super nice to be able to get under those things without laying on the ground.

    Another Bus going down the hiway, Safe! Scott it's so nice to hear you say things like the rear diff is down 3 - gallons of gear oil, the noise was the steaming hot gears trying to weld together at speed❕
    Shops miss these things because their to busy. Or to inept at their jobs. Replace a pinion seal ✅, top up or change the gear oil ✅, how they missed that huge up sell😬💰.

    30 years ago a Snap-On dealer told me if I wanted a good ratchet I should buy S&K. This was after a new 3/8 Snap-On ratchet let go after being used twice. I took the advice, I rarely have any problems with my S&K, and I use them daily many times.

      Our 3/4 snapon ratchet head stripped a gear. Our tool guy rebuilt it. It stripped a gear again. He ordered us a new head. This was that head and it is bad already. Ahhhh it should be much more durable and unfortunately when it slips getting injured is a real concern because we are usually giving it the beans when it happens

    Tyler's new Snap-on, torque-you wrench is making me want to buy one, just from hearing that sound. !!!Clack!!! This might be the 1st time audio has distorted in one of your videos. That's saying a lot considering none of your videos are soft soundscapes by nature of the work, and you are a very experienced photo and production guy.

    There's a free 80s ish Bluebird motorhome on Marketplace here in New Hampshire I believe with a DD. Apparently there was a battery fire which burned the rear. Just thought I'd let you know.

    When the roof was raised it changed CG, now you will need to add more shocks to reduce the top heavy feel.

    I used to use a torque multiplier for tightening those high torque nuts and bots.

    Wifes name and pic. Mark here. I had similar issues with the oil pan dipstick for my Cummins and the dipstick for my Allison 6spd automatic. There's a saying at least among our Alpine Coach owners group, don't be a dipstick, never trust your dipstick! Allison for one had no control in the installation of their transmissions in rv's so the dipsticks were often had incorrect readings. With my Cummins and Allison I had to remark the dipsticks with the correct readings once I had the correct fluid amounts from the manufacturers. Peace

    Seems to me that with the dual radius rod setup in the front axle, the kingpin inclination could be set independently with the axles still mostly square to the chassis....the one rigid rod at the bottom makes sense....the adjustable lower squares the axle centerline with the chassis, then the two uppers set the kingpin inclination, so if the axle is serviced in that order there should be no way to get that split caster. Split caster is a setup trick in stock cars, but they don’t turn right!

    Another one back on the road. One would think the mod shop would have handled the changes on all of the systems that were affected by the mod they did. Some time on Bus Mountain, some cash, some sweat, and all is well.

    No wonder your always booked up. Not just because your good and know your stuff, but if that other shop is $260/hr, your half that rate. And a mechanic that is filming everything and letting you work in the shop with them and then posting clips of the job on RUclips is not doing shitty work or scamming someone!

    On an MCI with the overhead cooling tank it’s a shame when system is drained you couldn’t drill a hole in the bottom of the tank to install a drain line so you cud easily drain the coolant into a container without owing any. Just a thought.

    If the oil pan is not original and deeper it also needs a deeper pickup tube and oil dipstick. The dipstick should match the levwl that the pickup tube is made for, otherwise you risk drawing air when doing high g turns or high slopes. If you just lenthen the dipstick but leave the pickup at the same height it's gonna be covered less. I think the oem dipstick would match the oem oil pickup regardless of the deeper oil pan,, unfortunately you'd have to put more oil in it to fit the deeper pan, but it would not cause any other issues.

    I havent seen a bus you couldnt fix .i drove setra coach 2009 tag axel driveable meaning turns had detroit diesel allison transmission. You got to driving skills to come up your driveway enjoy watching tim

    I'm still amazed at how after incompetent, irresponsible and uncaring people, who I refuse to call mechanics, have done their worst to this bus it continued plod along. Not nearly at its full potential but struggling in spite of the adversity. Any number of things you repaired could have shut it down immediately but did not. I can't decide if it's luck or skillful engineering by its original builders.

    part of the reason i work on my own vehicles is because i'm tight...
    but the main reason is because of stuff like that oil pan gasket. Scott, you personally saw how the tire places screw up. the oil change places are just as bad. i took the wife's Acura ONE TIME to Goodyear. they broke and didn't replace about half the plastic pins holding up the plastic engine cover under the car. hanging down, dragging on the ground. i know they were there because i did the last work. stripped the oil drain plug. so frustrating. you pay the $100+/hr rate for a mechanic but get serviced by the $12/hr oil/tire kid.

      Absolutely! Seldom do these people treat your equipment like a real mechanic. When you find a real mechanic, don’t argue about the price.

    At the start of this video I was thinking what a great bus Prevost make. The underside seemed clean and almost rust free.
    I live in the UK so I have no idea whether Prevost is a premium (i.e. expensive) brand, but I suspect it is.
    If so, this makes what those cowboy repair jockeys have done, even more unforgivable.
    Also, thank goodness the owner found Scott and Tyler to work their magic before those over-long rubber brake hoses gave up the unequal struggle and possibly caused a serious accident.
    Doesn't the US have mandatory annual safety inspections for all vehicles on its roads?
    In the UK, it's highly likely that those faults would have been picked up at the annual inspection and the bus would immediately have been ordered off the road until they'd been rectified. Lives are potentially at risk surely?

    At the end it sounds like the owner was describing what is known as "bump steer" with the previously screwed up drag link geometry.

    Sometimes when faced with very expensive rates like Freightliner or Detroit shops folks go to cheaper labor cost shops and pay far more in the long run.

      WW Williams didn’t install me with a lot of confidence on his previous repairs. They have a great reputation but flat out told him they were having trouble finding people to work. Trying to keep a big shop staffed with competent mechanics is impossible now a days. Not sure what the solution is for getting good service anywhere. Big shops always have good better best mechanic and a few turds too. Hence the saying “crap shoot” if your going to get a good one or not ;) Someone is always the best mechanic there and someone else is the worst. It seems like worst runner up is a popular category for contenders too.

    I've never much been a fan of Prevost coaches as I prefer Vanhool's personally but I am astonished by how quiet and Cadillac smooth this coach is now. I only wish my semi-truck rode that smooth. As I have the same Detroit engine, I'd love to know what model Allison transmission this coach uses as I'm seriously considering deleting my Eaton 10-speed manual in favor of an Allison-Auto due to right shoulder damage. Scott and Tyler, y'all did good on this coach and have given it maybe another 20-30 years of service provided the service and maintenance is kept up. Oh and my qualification with the Prevost coaches is based on the H3-45 model which rides like a log-wagon. Not sure what model this one is but that H3-45 made me not want to ride in another. I hope the owner returns someday after the new interior is installed so we can see it again.

      @@BusGreaseMonkey - They may not be as powerful as CAT's and Cummins but dammit, they sure are dependable and faithful engines if you take care of them. I may have a potential buyer of my trucking equipment and if it goes down, I'm hoping to move to Columbia / Mt. Pleasant area in the fall. Fingers crossed.
