  • Lenny our 1947 silversides pd 3751 with his detroit diesel 671 is taking us on a roadtrip to work on a 1990 prevost country coach conversion having some charging issues. Alternator, vanner equalizer, belts and more.
    Beautiful fall scenery and the sound of the 671 roaring through the hollers and hills of Tennessee! A magical combination ;)

    i never tire of hearing that 6-71 spring to life ,, this is one of my favorite engines of all time ,,i own several of them , along with owning a nearly identical bus which i fell in love with 5 years ago , it's a pleasure to drive even for short trips

    I worked for Continental Trailways in the early and mid 80's as a porter and then freight agent. I remember driving those old Detroit buses every day. We cleaned and serviced them and put them on a storage lot when the drivers needed to sleep. There was a series of sleeping quarters upstairs where they could take time off from driving in Corpus Christi, Tx I also learnt to drive in a 1977 GMC truck with a 6V71 Detroit that would make you death when she was running full out!

    Been a while since I been to this channel, but the 671 is hard to beat, It sounds so good when it's slightly surging on startup until it settles, every other engine sounds boring compared to this. It kinda compares to a Hughes MD500 turbine startup if you've ever heard one of those start I highly recommend it, they sound like an Angry Animal waking up, wish I had one. It's the same helicopter in the Magnum PI TV series.

    I never see you working on any of the old Crown Supercoaches. There were thousands of these across the Western US 40 to 60 years ago - I rode these to and from work out on the Idaho desert at the National Reactor Testing Station (now INEEL). I'm surprised that I don't see many modified into RV buses. They were big, fast, relatively quiet, and fairly smooth riders.

    Scott, I know you discussed the reason(s) why an automatic transmission would be difficult to impossible for Lenny years ago. Will you refresh the memories of some of us “older” fans?

    • @Wingnut353
      @Wingnut353 10 месяцев назад

      An automatic would be slower and use more fuel because they are typically less efficient... so as long as you can drive the manual its better in every way except for its manual. As far as technical reasons... It would have to be a bevel gear transmission... which immediately limits your options to transmissions from busses with the same exact setup and layout.
