Phil knows what he is doing. That engine RPM level is about the same with each acceleration shift. This guys knows his stuff. After all the botched stuff I have watched so refreshing to see a true professional. 😃

I used to work in hydraulics for a third party company building machinary and servicing it for the offshore oil/gas industry. If ya like the detroits you would be happy as they use a heck of a lot of detroits out there, they'll scream allday.....
I know you dumped a lot of Lucas in the tank. I can tell you from my experience, that while in the tank of my tractor, my tractor was hard starting and smoked like crazy... I'm not putting the product down, for all I know it was cleaning away just like it should, but it didn't help the performance while I was running it. Your fuel issue's are another story, but don;t get sidetracked by the Lucas.

I`ve been a diesel mechanic since 1981 blue oil smoke at idle is blow by. The oil control rings in that motor need replacing oil smoke at start up is normal for the first 5 seconds maybe of that vintage but no more than that. Good video and great channel
Love the way he's maxin out those RPMS, that truly is an old greyhound bus. Since watching you and your crew I have learned a lot and cherish the knowledge, starting to like the bus as a home on wheels.
The fuel pump itself can sometimes suck air also. If there's no air in the strainer and air in the filter that would be a suspect, a crack or a bad seal.
@@toddde6997 - but the air is being introduced on the suction side of the fuel pump. I agree with others and think it is probably between the fuel pickup tube in the tank and the filters.
That old fuel definately isn't helping with the smoke issue even with additive, there could be an issue where the line connects to the fuel pickup in the tank or the fuel pickup itself, I had one that had a pinhole rusted through it one time. Those things can be so frustrating to diagnose but there's definitely something your missing. These are the ones that make you smarter in the end though!
I always called those type problems gremlins, you spend so much time hunting the issue and when you finally find it, its so simple and you get a bit mad, fix it, laugh about it and store the knowledge....lol
Phil seem out of sorts with the engine not firing correctly. Any fuel problems like this you start at the beginning of the flue supply, New fuel,Tank, fuel lines, Flexi pipe, anti confusion connections tests. Phil is lovely gentleman, The knowledge he has, is history , special thank you Phil and Scott's team. You will both sort it out. Bless you all
Pretty much the same problems we had once with one of our Leyland buses some years ago. Swapped out the injectors just to be sure. No fuel issues, no dirt or clogged filters. Finally, we replaced the fuel pump. That did the trick. Afterwards, we had the faulty pump checked and it turned out to be way out of specs due to.......modern diesel! The lack of sulfur made it to wear out way faster. So on our older buses, we add additives every three fill ups or so. Until now, no problems whatsoever. Greetings from Holland. Willem.

Sounds like the Apollo 13, only kidding Scott, blue smoke is also old flat fuel specially if it's cold. Put some old fuel and new fuel in cups and watch the difference in viscosity. The 6-71 generator I got running had 40 year old fuel in the day tank, i pumped it out and carried it out of the building 20 litres at a time, all 500 liters, before tipping in 200 liters of fresh fuel. It made a huge difference to the exhaust smoke. The old fuel smelt like turpentine and was oily viscous not like diesel at all.
If the tires were not old enough to vote I would over inflate them by 10 or 15 pounds and then up put a couple of hundred on them because those tire are D shaped to square from sitting for so long. If the tires are not to old most times you can drive them back round but when they get old “square” tires it has been my experience they tend to slip a belt which means if they are not changed very quickly you are going to have a blowout sooner than later.
Steering was OK. Someone had adjusted right side steering stop pin out too far to keep back of right tire from rubbing brake hose on right turn. Repositioned brake hose and reset stop pin. Perfect now.
I love the sound of those Detroit engines also back in the day when I would take bus trips on greyhound or trail ways buses I would sit to the right of the driver just to see him shift gears😁👍🏿
Perhaps it is Phil who is reluctant to change injectors, but Scott IT NEEDS 6 NEW INJECTORS! and new fuel!!! I've been doing these Detroits for 40 years and I can tell you that stale fuel and a bad injector blowing combustion pressure into the fuel galley will cause many of the problems you're seeing.
Scott, you’ve got a lot of things working against you. Old, dirty fuel which probably doesn’t burn right. Old injectors, old style filter canisters, used valve guides and head. Any number of places for air and oil leaks. I would replace the old style filters with a good separator and spin on filter. Drain the old fuel and put in fresh clean diesel. Put in all new injectors.
@@gilbertfranklin1537 - That's the problem. Always trying to do things on the cheap. Why rebuild an engine and use old worn out injectors and other parts? Why fight those old rotted fuel lines for so long? Why overdose old stale fuel with too much additive which can do absolutely nothing to improve the fuel quality. There's an old saying -"Penny wise and Pound (Dollar) foolish". I think that describes this repair to a "T".
@@flick22601 If I had to use the old injectors, I would had them put on test stand and at least know good or bad. Detroits are fine motors but they can be touchy in the fuel department.....
My grandpa drove till he was in his early 90s he hit a lot of things cars, fences, ditches, his house, etc, but he loved to drive so they let him drive!
We were faced with the very same problem, minus the smoke that is. Culprit was the fuel pump. Pump worked fine at idling but as soon as the accelerator was pushed, one of the plunjers obviously stopped working or failed to deliver the required amount of fuel. It drove us mad, so much time we had spend on that bus. We had the pump overhauled and it turned out the faulty plunjer had a broken spring. Fuel issues can be difficult to deal with. But we learned...
When you were using compressed air to blow fuel from the tank to the back the flow did not look right. At the time it looked like something wrong with the pickup or the line to the back. I would try to run the supply and return into a temporary container and see if the issue goes away. The smoking could well just be aerated fuel causing late injection timing.
My thoughts too. Some Mungrel put a small amount of sawdust in my fuel tank (like a hand full) which contaminated the fuel so bad it near on wrote the fuel tank off by the time I found it (Rust in the tank from it) & caused problems like seen here.
Scott A good dose of seafoam seems to really clean the system out. We used it on a ford 6.4 with 200k on it and after a couple hundred miles it ran smooth. We added it to the oil and after 2 changes the lifters quieted down and now 6k later it still runs smooth. I believe in that crap. Magic. ( like STP!!lol)
Listening to the normal rattles as Phil drove gave me a flashback to my childhood on the old NYC 🗽buses with the rattling coin box full of change. Thanks GUYS🚍🔧🐒🎥

Hey Scott, I had the same problem with my 5302 I pulled the fuel tank, the pickup tubes were rusted through. I replaced them and problem solved! Check the tank! Go luck, love these videos Thanks
I've had bad injectors installed during an overhaul wash out a cylinder liner really fast, depending on how bad the injector is leaking or misfiring, it doesn't take long to screw a cylinder up. We had a Detroit Diesel Shop rebuild one of our 6-71 inline generator engines and let it idle way too long without putting it under a full or near full load and for the next 26,000 hours that engine used at least 1 gallon or lube oil every 24 hours!
I love the look of that bus, I rode Greyhound some the mid 1960s and rode one in about 1989 for about 120 miles because I sold my car and it didn't make sense to have my wife drive two hours one way to pick me up but I never rode a bus that old. That one may be making you pull your hair out but it is sure a beauty out on the road.
I’d run it out of a boat tank/gas can to isolate the rest of the fuel system. I’ve had a lot of experience with trash in the tank sticking to the fuel pick up, then when the engine quits, it will fall off and the engine will hard start but run ok for awhile. Also, Jimmy’s are hard to seat rings on if you can’t load them heavy right away, I’ve had best experience with F.P. kits but even then if you can’t load the shit out of them it’s a bit of a crap shoot. At 18:15 looks like a lot of air sucked in from the tank. Looks like it is coming in on the very right side then to the top of the sight glass, over the top and directly into the filter. There should be none. Every bubble of air will cause a problem and add up in short order.
I think this is the first BGM video I have watched where the driver truly knows how to shift those things. Notice at 17:32 when he realizes he missed instead of just ramming it home he went back to neutral, spun up the input shaft and went again. Good job.
All the hassle with that ancient fuel system.. first thing I would do is bypass it all with a jerry can of diesel right into the pump. Then you can isolate engine / fuel system. Good luck! There's lots of work to do on an old detroit.

I remember Christmas 1969 a bunch of us loaded up at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri to go home for two weeks before heading for Vietnam to Charleston WV and the driver said I've got a thermos up here and when we stop for lunch you guys keep this thermos full and we'll make Chas in 10 hrs...and that was before the interstate was completed..and we sure as hell made her in 10 hrs and ever since then the best I could run a Big Rig from Chas to St Louis had been 10 hrs and Ft Leonard Wood is another 2 hrs...Man we flew in that Old Five Speed manual...lol
some how I think you are chasing air in the fuel system. this would make smoke as it throws off the timing as air compresses and liquid wont. that and the super old fuel. before you destroy the injectors. I am thinking drain every thing and pressure test every fitting and hose , and you will find a leak some were. I worked on a sawmill that ran a 4-71 that smoked and we found a line that would leak air and not fuel. fixed it and no more smoke.
24:00 There was no charging problem. The heater fan switch was on and I know one of the two motors is stuck, drawing excessive current. I don't know why the hell neither of us noticed the one fan running, it's obvious in the video. I knew this because I went thru this last year when I thought something was wrong with the charging system, and then I forgot. I am disconnecting the fan switch until I can get to the problem.
What a beautiful old greyhound! It definitely sounds fantastic going down the road. I’m sure you will figure out the fuel situation, it’s frustrating working the same problem over and over. You are doing a great job👍

After watching your video of you at Phil's house and seeing the picture of him in his junior high class picture and doing a bit of math I put his age at roughly 86-87? He is doing fantastic and he drives like he is in his 40's! Great guy to hang around with a talk to and he LOVES to talk! I am thinking the same as others about the old fuel and also air in the lines causing the smoke. Not to mention the massive amount of additive Phil dumped in there. I think a dump and flush of the fuel would work wonders and also a check and replacement of the lines from the tank to the engine.
Mate I seen these sort of problems before on old gear. DUMP all that fuel in that tank & check if not change the fuel lines all the way back to the tank & either stick a camera into that tank & have a look around in there if not take it out and inspect the pickup gauze for blockage. The fuel pump is sucking that hard that it's getting air in your fuel possibly from a cracked fuel hose or it is simply just a very high vacuum in the suckshion side of the fuel pump. The smoke can happen under these circumstances ( contaminated fuel/ airated fuel). Last time this happened to me, I had fuel starvation problems & I found SAWDUST intentionally put in the tank (sabotage) which causes bad fuel contamination including making the fuel acidic and rusting the tank innards and blocking the tank pickup & the same symptoms your seeing there happened to me. Drove me insane for months until i took the tank out all together and found all my problems in the tank.
How is the fuel tank vented? It's 30 yrs since I worked on those Detroits, but there was newer series of injectors you could go to that made a big improvement...less smoke If I remember. It should also have the higher comp pistons. And thank god that Arthur Savage invented the radial tire :)
These videos bring back so many memories. I worked for the dog from 1967 to 1983 and in that time I was in every shop greyhound had from Houston Texas to New York City to Miami Florida to St. Louis. I started at the reman shop at chamblee ga and went to the Atlanta shop in early 80s when chamblee was closed. Not sure how I hadn't watched this before! I have a '52 MoPac 4103 that has been partially converted in Northern Minnesota. Would like to find one to compare against considering a previous owner completely wrecked all of the electrical. Thanks to this video at least I was able to see the fuel shut off solenoid placement! 37:17 "This was filled with fuel, this was not" pointing to the filter on either side of the pump. Replace the fuel pump. Then check the supply line coming from the tank. You could leak-test it by disconnecting it from the tank, plugging one end, then doing a leak-down test from about 50 psi...
Scott- Have you considered a fuel restriction either pickup tube or an obstruction floating in the tank? Those Detroit’s have very strong fuel pumps pinch off fuel supply and it will find air. Might be time to run it off a Jerry can and rule out supply. Also I would not worry of smoke color. The air box Is still dirty, you have old fuel, with lots of Lucas! I would avoid idling until it is broke in. (It could be already they don’t take long, 1/2 hr on Dyno is all we did).
I noticed the priming tube with the little valve did not have a cap above the valve. Sometimes those rascals will leak under suction or when under vibration. You might Teflon tape all the screwed connections around that valve also.
could you place a few inline pressure gauges on the fuel lines to check your fuel pressure, Fuel pump may be working but not giving full pressure. I only guessing. Good luck.
It is a 2 stroke so there are several places oil coil be introduced but my first would be if still using none turbo ring type seals in blower so remove intake hat and make sure rotors are dry at the ends.
When it was first started it sounded very raspy compared to Lenny and other 6-71 engines. It sounded to me like the bottom end needed attention. Hopefully not.
You are so right Montie. Often times our sub-conscious mind already has the answer but we are so busy using our conscious mind we don't let our sub-conscious talk to us. Walking away for a while gives our sub-conscious a chance to communicate the information it has gathered.

But why would the primary be full and not the secondary if it was the tank? Crack in the Secondary casing or bad seal? Pain in the caboose.
By eliminating the fuel tank and it's fuel lines and drawing fuel off and auxiliary tank you would know about where the problem is

That problem of intermittent injectors drives me crazy. I finally located a set of 55's and now it runs smooth.

We have 1399 on our property. It was running last summer. Didn't get off the lot this summer but I had it running.
I don't know anything about engines but these videos are very therapeutic.

And then driving it at 70 mph with bad tires to boot. Let me off this thing.

Phil insisted they change out the injectors days ago, said if they unstick them they will just stick again later

If you want to get a good look at the atomizer pattern from those injectors try filming them at 240fps for a slow motion playback.

Me too! That's the bus I rode to high school back in the 60s. We always waited for the "old" bus with our old driver... it was the best ride!

That peeling dash and A pillars would look fabulous scuffed and smoothed with a Scotch Brite pad and then a thin coat of boiled linseed oil.

I've had bad injectors installed during an overhaul wash out a cylinder liner really fast, depending on how bad the injector is leaking or misfiring, it doesn't take long to screw a cylinder up. We had a Detroit Diesel Shop rebuild one of our 6-71 inline generator engines and let it idle way too long without putting it under a full or near full load and for the next 26,000 hours that engine used at least 1 gallon or lube oil every 24 hours!
I love the look of that bus, I rode Greyhound some the mid 1960s and rode one in about 1989 for about 120 miles because I sold my car and it didn't make sense to have my wife drive two hours one way to pick me up but I never rode a bus that old. That one may be making you pull your hair out but it is sure a beauty out on the road.
I know it's frustrating for you, but this is so real life when fixing things. I get tired of RUclips videos where repairs always go perfect.
I’d run it out of a boat tank/gas can to isolate the rest of the fuel system. I’ve had a lot of experience with trash in the tank sticking to the fuel pick up, then when the engine quits, it will fall off and the engine will hard start but run ok for awhile. Also, Jimmy’s are hard to seat rings on if you can’t load them heavy right away, I’ve had best experience with F.P. kits but even then if you can’t load the shit out of them it’s a bit of a crap shoot. At 18:15 looks like a lot of air sucked in from the tank. Looks like it is coming in on the very right side then to the top of the sight glass, over the top and directly into the filter. There should be none. Every bubble of air will cause a problem and add up in short order.
I think this is the first BGM video I have watched where the driver truly knows how to shift those things.
Notice at 17:32 when he realizes he missed instead of just ramming it home he went back to neutral, spun up the input shaft and went again.

All the hassle with that ancient fuel system.. first thing I would do is bypass it all with a jerry can of diesel right into the pump. Then you can isolate engine / fuel system. Good luck! There's lots of work to do on an old detroit.
Exactly. Renovation of the fuel system including the fuel tank should always be job 1.

I remember Christmas 1969 a bunch of us loaded up at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri to go home for two weeks before heading for Vietnam to Charleston WV and the driver said I've got a thermos up here and when we stop for lunch you guys keep this thermos full and we'll make Chas in 10 hrs...and that was before the interstate was completed..and we sure as hell made her in 10 hrs and ever since then the best I could run a Big Rig from Chas to St Louis had been 10 hrs and Ft Leonard Wood is another 2 hrs...Man we flew in that Old Five Speed manual...lol
I absolutely LOVE the sound of those old GM buses! Brings back a lot of memories of the many miles I rode in one when I first joined the Army.
did you check the cam on each lobe for height? with a dial indicator? one low lobe will look like a bum injector....

some how I think you are chasing air in the fuel system. this would make smoke as it throws off the timing as air compresses and liquid wont.
that and the super old fuel. before you destroy the injectors. I am thinking drain every thing and pressure test every fitting and hose , and you will find a leak some were.
I worked on a sawmill that ran a 4-71 that smoked and we found a line that would leak air and not fuel. fixed it and no more smoke.
24:00 There was no charging problem. The heater fan switch was on and I know one of the two motors is stuck, drawing excessive current. I don't know why the hell neither of us noticed the one fan running, it's obvious in the video. I knew this because I went thru this last year when I thought something was wrong with the charging system, and then I forgot. I am disconnecting the fan switch until I can get to the problem.
Do these have pic ups in the tank or lines coming from the tank I’d check the tank next

Scott, there is a lot of interesting comments and suggestions - some sound very plausible. But, I keep wondering... who's money are you spending? At some point do the funds dry up? 😏
My time here dries up. Phil will continue on the hunt for the issue of the air and getting new fuel and running the lines to the tank
There could bad fuel, dirty fuel some fin particles passing through the filters and interfering with the injectors. Just a thought.

After watching your video of you at Phil's house and seeing the picture of him in his junior high class picture and doing a bit of math I put his age at roughly 86-87? He is doing fantastic and he drives like he is in his 40's! Great guy to hang around with a talk to and he LOVES to talk! I am thinking the same as others about the old fuel and also air in the lines causing the smoke. Not to mention the massive amount of additive Phil dumped in there. I think a dump and flush of the fuel would work wonders and also a check and replacement of the lines from the tank to the engine.
Maybe the high rpm on the highway used the fuel faster than could be provided ?

Mate I seen these sort of problems before on old gear. DUMP all that fuel in that tank & check if not change the fuel lines all the way back to the tank & either stick a camera into that tank & have a look around in there if not take it out and inspect the pickup gauze for blockage.
The fuel pump is sucking that hard that it's getting air in your fuel possibly from a cracked fuel hose or it is simply just a very high vacuum in the suckshion side of the fuel pump. The smoke can happen under these circumstances ( contaminated fuel/ airated fuel). Last time this happened to me, I had fuel starvation problems & I found SAWDUST intentionally put in the tank (sabotage) which causes bad fuel contamination including making the fuel acidic and rusting the tank innards and blocking the tank pickup & the same symptoms your seeing there happened to me. Drove me insane for months until i took the tank out all together and found all my problems in the tank.
How is the fuel tank vented? It's 30 yrs since I worked on those Detroits, but there was newer series of injectors you could go to that made a big improvement...less smoke If I remember. It should also have the higher comp pistons. And thank god that Arthur Savage invented the radial tire :)
These videos bring back so many memories. I worked for the dog from 1967 to 1983 and in that time I was in every shop greyhound had from Houston Texas to New York City to Miami Florida to St. Louis. I started at the reman shop at chamblee ga and went to the Atlanta shop in early 80s when chamblee was closed. I also drove the truck that took the rebuilt parts out to the shops and picked up the wore out stuff. Lots of stories and a few nite mares. J.D.Crane

i had a prob with old diesel smelling like varnish, the fuel was super thin and didnt run right at all. swapped it out and run fine after that.

Not sure how I hadn't watched this before! I have a '52 MoPac 4103 that has been partially converted in Northern Minnesota. Would like to find one to compare against considering a previous owner completely wrecked all of the electrical. Thanks to this video at least I was able to see the fuel shut off solenoid placement! Replace the fuel pump.
Then check the supply line coming from the tank. You could leak-test it by disconnecting it from the tank, plugging one end, then doing a leak-down test from about 50 psi...
Scott- Have you considered a fuel restriction either pickup tube or an obstruction floating in the tank? Those Detroit’s have very strong fuel pumps pinch off fuel supply and it will find air. Might be time to run it off a Jerry can and rule out supply.
Also I would not worry of smoke color. The air box Is still dirty, you have old fuel, with lots of Lucas! I would avoid idling until it is broke in. (It could be already they don’t take long, 1/2 hr on Dyno is all we did).
I noticed the priming tube with the little valve did not have a cap above the valve. Sometimes those rascals will leak under suction or when under vibration. You might Teflon tape all the screwed connections around that valve also.
Could be debris in the fuel tank, diesel algae... that brocks injectors.

I would get rid of the old fuel (or use it for something else) and Pop in new injectors.
could you place a few inline pressure gauges on the fuel lines to check your fuel pressure, Fuel pump may be working but not giving full pressure. I only guessing. Good luck.
It is a 2 stroke so there are several places oil coil be introduced but my first would be if still using none turbo ring type seals in blower so remove intake hat and make sure rotors are dry at the ends.
It would be a bit of a bummer it the head had a crack between the oil and fuel passages. Maybe check for fuel in the oil or vice versa.

When it was first started it sounded very raspy compared to Lenny and other 6-71 engines. It sounded to me like the bottom end needed attention. Hopefully not.
