Please be very careful When under the bus. We just lost one of our Penske mechanics (Cesar)when the air suspension let go and The bus came down and crushed him. We do things 1000 times to save time and then 1001 time Tragedy strikes.

I think Tylor suggested to Scott that the "pit" was becoming the new "plasma cutter?" (something else that was constantly brought up)
One thing that Scott doesn’t fear is getting dirty.
Thus, the moniker, "Bus Grease Monkey"! He and Tyler are highly skilled and work very well as a team. Always impressed by their troubleshooting and repair prowess. Excellent job!

That appears to be the engine from Carolina Coach Co. C5816 based in Raleigh, NC. Evidently they did their own rebuilds in-house.
I do NOT envy the work you have to do on these buses, but I do enjoy watching it. Learn stuff I never even thought about.
The rebuild history on the engine is amazing. It has to be a million mile 6-71.
I believe thats the fault of an overzealous Crank grinder when they did the last overhaul That thrust washer looks entirely too good to be worn out .Usually you see copper when they are worn
A full pull down of the bearings is likely to reveal that one has been taking nearly all the wear, in each direction.

1 cup 70% rubbing alcohol
1/4 cup Dawn dish soap.
Alternatively, Dawn applied and wiped off dry. Works like a charm so long as you DON’T get your hands wet first.

Fast Orange soap works great & is biodegradable. Also helps keep hands from cracking.
A pair of 10's would get you to 0.020 - 0.022 based upon how I was reading the indicator. That's 2X ideal but not so far from the 0.018 wear limit. Would certainly be an improvement until you want to pull the motor. After checking the rest of it over better you may find its cheaper to grab a used one like you did a year or so back...
If 15 or 20 overs are available that would probably be ideal
Time for new bearings or a rebuild. Those are great engines though, for the road or on the water.
New bearings will not fix that much endplay. Crank replacement is necessary.

Watching the video, it looked like the dial indicator was going around the OTHER way, which would be .060 (ish). Wow....
As indicated below the video speed was deceiving. It looked like .060 to me too.
3:40 DO NOT CHEAP OUT AND BUY THE LITTLE CANS OF WIPES. I have bought both and while the wipes in the little cans are good, they're nothing compared to as good as the ones in the jugs: they're larger and much heavier cloth, so have a lot more scrubby and soap to them as well.
Buy the expensive ones, you won't regret it!
Well, the one caveat being their packaging kind of sucks if you order a full case... They tend to get cracked or pop open in shipping.
Protective glasses my man also spray degreaser on under side, power wash then take it apart.

I can see why you push those Gojo wipes now, first couple of times I saw them in a vid I was skeptical but I know that greasy spooge doesn't just wipe off with a wet wipe! Normally my trick for getting that crap off is wash myself with brake cleaner lol but might just see if I can get some over here in the UK as it can't be good for the skin & it gets damn cold in winter using that method!

If you want the best hand cleaner on the market get yourself some tko hand cleaner, it is now sold under the zep brand. I have not found a better product in all my years of work.
I think the upper limit on factory thrust bearings is about 10thou each, and that play is way beyond that :-(
Shimming will only work if the thrust faces on the crank and block are both OK, if not one or both are going to head towards either some serious re-work or the unusable parts bin.
Another consideration is how well centred the crank is to the block, I'd guess there's a figure somewhere that gives the tolerance for that. Gettnig the crank too far one way can wreck the rods and or rod bearings in no short order. Been there, got the tee-shirt :-(

See if your Snap-On dealer has samples of their Nitro Gold hand cleaner. That stuff rocks. It's soy based and has some sort of lotion that helps keep your hsnds from drying out.

Last pubication I have from FP - Diesel shows STD, .005, and .010 for those Inline 71 series thrust washers...I do wish I knew what the STD thickness was.... (Interestingly Main Bearing Shells go STD, .002, .010, .020, .030, .040, .050 U/S and Rods go STD, .002, .010, .020, .030, .040 U/S) The DD manual I have is from 1952 LOL, states should be .004-.011 New and no more than .018 when "worn"
I also saw .060” judging by the way the needle swept on the gauge.
I guess i’ll have them move it slow but it looked like it was not going around the long way. I think you just saw an optical illusion
Frame by frame there is no indication of direction and it real life it looked like it was going the short way. You may be right though. Regardless .40 of .60 i think the end result is the same. Way to much

Yep, that was a fast needle sweep, but looks like .040". Is there a chart for those thrust bearings showing their thickness?
I didn't see any stamps on the backs. Bet, well, I hope, those are simply the base size ones.
With that amount of play and the thrust washers not being shot makes me think the last crank grind was messed up. If the crank journels (main or big end) do not need a regrind could you have a spacer made to go in behind the thrusts?
Ive just run the video at 25% speed, it is easy to see that it is 40thou. The small dial also shows less than half way movement between the 4 and 5
Yes the small dial moves less than half not slightly more than half. In real life it was obvious but the video was deceiving. I will shoot it slow motion in the morning though just to confirm
I did the same, since it looked like 0.060” at regular speed. Weird. But it confirms, and the small pointer’s direction agrees.
I’d assume the oversize thrust is 0.010 per piece, 0.020 per set? I don’t suppose a thrust set from a different Detroit would fit, and might be available thicker?
@@PeopleAlreadyDidThis The crankshaft is one piece so it stops moving at the first resistance even if the others have additional clearance. The others would only have additional clearance if they were under spec at assembly, i.e. a real botch job. So the end play is also the play on the tightest bearing each way. It could be a different bearing stopping the play in the opposite direction.
please wear safety glasses that dirt will do real damage to your eye
Have you considered a grease pit in your shop? I know Greyhound Here in San Francisco had one when my ex-father-in-law worked there with a pressure washer.
I worked with them on a farm and you had to be careful, it was a farm so we had no cover. They were wood and had rotted and broken and not replaced. We tried to keep a vehicle over them tor remind us that they were there. and a magnet on a long stick was essential to retrieve dropped tools

yeah that dial indicator needle is swinging the long way around, it's closer to .070. How the heck can it be that far off? Is there anything else retaining the crank laterally that might be missing? I was waiting for the muffler to fall in the drain pan and give you a bath, you got lucky there :)

Is the .010 oversized the cumulative amount or is each side .010 meaning .020 total take up? How long would you have to leave a pan off a Detroit to keep it from dripping on you?
Do you want the answer expressed in months, years, or decades ? Actually, a day or so would be enough, then get up there with a few rags or some compressed air to blow out the stubborn stuff. When you start undoing things, you'll uncover more drips, so it's almost never-ending.
The engine has to come out to remove the crank, doesn't it?
No, the transmission could separated and the crank dropped that way. But 6-71 cranks are tricky to get and knocking on 1300 after tax, and shipping plus core return shipping.
Time for a stroker crank.

I dont think it is worth the trouble to rebuild the crankshaft into a bowl. They might do it in Pakistan though!!

i wonder if the crank thrust faces are not destroyed.. the thrust bearing faces look OK.. i wonder if one could contact a precision water jet cutting company and with larger thicker thrust bearings from a different application.. you might be able to get water jet cut extra thick thrust bearings for your daughters bus engine. if you can't add brass shim stock behind them..
Hey Scott, while watching the video I noticed the engine had an upgraded spin on oil filter. I would like to install 1 of those on the 671 in my 4103 but am having trouble locating what's necessary to complete such a job and where to buy the parts needed...any advice?...thanks Steve from Fla.....
On an inline there is no adapter i am aware of. You must find the whole oil cooler mount plate that is for the spin on. Be careful though i believe there are two different ones and only one works for yours. The difference is the oil cooler may mount 180° on the other side and thats where your starter is so that other version is not the same direction.

They're different. I have the ones you have. Takes a few towels to clean up my arms after dealing with a similar amount of grease/oil that Scott had on his hands. I need to get some of the Gojo towels myself. Also need to get the hand soap that Tyler tried out when he was at Chris' shop in Indiana.

Think they're the hangers that mount the tailpipes to the bumper.
First shot of the back of the bus (a few videos ago) showed that the tailpipes were almost crushed closed so I'd guess they are a field-mod to open them up a bit

Someone else suggested that when the crank was last turned, someone got overly aggressive or just plain wasn't paying attention. Maybe even caused a deep scar and purposely milled it out to hide their sin(s).
