Some very interesting finds on this project. Something caused 1/2 of the engine to overheat and crack two liners.

Hey Scott, here's some food for thought. I agree that you had a heat problem on the one side of the engine. However; you need to take into consideration that there is a crossove tube between the thermostat housings. This is to help balance the flow of coolant just in case a t-stat fails for any reason. One of the best ways to determine if the engine was over heated is to locate remove the "fuse plug" in the head if the center of the fuse plug is melted out, the engine was definitely run hot. The fuse plug(s) are located on the exhaust side of the head, above either #2 or #3 cylinder it appears as a 1/8" NPT plug with a straight slot. Remove and have a look. Regards, Tinshack

I also think rebuilding the 1 bank was a good call, given the damage. However, I don't believe the cause of the damage was over-heat. I believe that it was water-diluted oil, from coolant leaking in, through the cracked sleeves. I could be wrong.

Yes! Awesome comic relief. And yes, I agree with the half re build. It would make no sense to do the whole engine. If it were close to being worn out, and one side had damage, that would be a different story.

When putting in fences with gates we always used a second vertical post to either side of the opening with a solid (another post or heavy section of pipe diagonally between them and heavy galvanized wire wrapped and tightened on the opposite diagonal. This was done to prevent or minimized sagging of the gates over time. Just a thought.
Great video as usual. Keep up the good work!

Only half a rebuild so find the right agency and im sure Jerry can recoup his costs with voice over work. Seriously that thermostat partial fail, is that the origonal or a replacement that failed . Not many miles compared with the usual engines needing attention on this channel.

Scott, nice forensics on the right side of the engine and great clear video. As to the trespassers, way to go. Fence the zero's out. Go to Tractor Supply or Harbor Freight and get several small rubber wheels to affix to the two swing gates to keep them from dragging. That will make it easier for your wife to muscle them open/closed each time too. Take care BGM!

Personally If I were the owner of that Wanderlodge I would take a some of the money saved on not replacing the pistons and sleeves and go a head and consider replacing the all the rod bearing and also install a temperature sending unit and separate gauge for both engines banks as well as exhaust pyrometers on both engine banks. I am a firm believer that the more gauges the better (within reason of course)

Shame when this happens, thermostat attempts to destroy an engine. Same thing happened to my gas Land Rover freelander.
To be honest most older vehicles temp gauges are there more for entertainment than actual accurate readings lol. Half of them will sit dead centre telling you everything is “just fine” whilst the cylinder head simultaneously boils to death and warps just as mine did. Was a fun weekend rebuilding it.
I always recommend fitting an additional digital numeric read out sensor and gauge on anything that has the ability to destroy itself. Least then you get a warning.

Considering where your property sits, I'm actually surprised he drove so far away to do his business when there is a public park just right down the road. Have fun with that old Detroit iron which was one of my favorites until the DDEC-4 S60 I have now came along. Speaking of, after having a six pack installed a few weeks back, and them refusing to replace injector cups, now it has to return to shop, pull the head, and replace all six cups due to anti-freeze leaking down into either cyl-5 or cyl-6. My diesel shop is getting on my nerves but no one else in Indianapolis who know how to work on a Series 60.

My friend bought up 4 8v92ta crate engines and a few Allison ht751 transmission for next to nothing. He was able to get the engines for like $2500 each and the transmissions for like $1000 each. Two thermostats on these?!? complicated! I understand the problem with scored cylinders, but what is the effect of scored pistons? of course they shouldn't be scored in the first place, but what problem does it cause? do the scores rub on the cylinder walls, causing more compression loss/oil burning?

    • @BusGreaseMonkey

Heat expands... pistons expand, liners expand and the two meet in the middle. The pistons try to seize and grab and that’s usually what breaks the liners and of course causes the scoring.

in any engine the flow of fluids is not perfectly uniform ( for oil and water).........if there is a lack of flow, the component furthest away or that has some kind of other bias will starve for correct supply enough to fail. Much like how if oil pressure is low, the main bearing furthest from the oil supply point will seize/fail.

After ordering the wrong side fender on a car resto and got hit with double shipping, I learned NEVER EVER say left or right side on nothing automotive , it's either drivers side or passengers side on EVERYTHING !!!!!! Never say left or right or it can cost you .

WTF is wrong with people?! LMFAO. I laughed too much at that trespasser story; I almost choked on my food. Some people are SO stupid, LOL. Good luck with the fencing, Scott. And another good video.
