  • Racing is not always rosy. This video captures the bittersweet moment Team Aardema/Braun captured a 44-year-old E Class Fuel record by exceeding the existing record by 10 miles per hour, The vehicle had a recorded speed of 232.9 MPH. Within seconds after the speed announcement, the vehicle suffered parachute failure due to a faulty attachment anchor point. As a result, the driver was unable to stop the vehicle in time which resulted in a controlled spin to slow the vehicle to a complete stop. The vehicle traveled past the safety barrier resulting in disqualification for the run. The team pulled together and quickly repaired the parachute attachment and replace two tires. Thankfully we were offered the help of a local land speed racer who allowed us to use his shop and equipment to repair the car. Within 1 hour, we were up and going again and attempted a second pass. Unfortunately, the Parachute latch opened prematurely resulting in an aborted run.

    Thank you Greg for taking the time to document Aardema/Braun and their wizardry/engineering. Just fascinating... I remember a guy who would do business with the neighbor of an old employer decades ago in S El Monte, he had one of those push bumpers for his salt racer and he used to tell me about El Mirage and all about his world. Cheers

    It passed tech inspection. Therefore the tech's should bear the responsibility as well.

      a lot can happen between inspection and run but i agree - if it passed safety how was it out of compliance?

    THAT WASNT A SPIN OUT.....THAT WAS A CONTROLLED SPIN ON PURPOSE TO SLOW IT DOWN. GUY WAS A GREAT DRIVER AND DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO.

    After going over 230 that bonehead inspector more or less said it didn't do it, that makes him a liar. It's not like anyone was cheated to break the recorded.

    Why didn’t they’re tech inspection catch something like a parachute out of compliance? That’s bull shit.

      The rule book states "after a vehicle leaves the start line on a record run, any interruption such as a spin, loss of engine power etc. will terminate the record attempt." Even though the spin was in the shutdown area, the race director followed the rules when making his decision. Had the chute attachment not failed, the record would have been good even though it was sub-spec. Chute failure & or a spin are the two main reasons that will get you 'Back' into tech inspection.

    Yes, I think he intentionally spun it to scrub off speed. Good move if the end of the course is coming up too soon. Repairing the problem in the middle of nowhere is what we used to call "Field Expedience" back in my US Army days.

    I just love how these guys built their engine from scratch and the whole car of course, and that engine is a little v12 the have another one that’s much bigger which boggles the mind, what if they put the big one in a streamliner ,it’s turbos are that big they would suck in birds and small dogs if they get to close, all l can say about these guys is they are the real deal.

    • @GregQuirin
      @GregQuirin  2 года назад

      They are the real deal for sure. True passion and pride in what they do and have achieved. Most of us would just bolt on high performance parts from Summit and call it a day, Pete and Kevin would rather make their own parts and look at ways to improve. There are not too many 369 CID engines out there that are naturally aspirated producing 920HP! This was achieved from years of experience and testing. Pete holds some 33 land speed records and I would say Pete and Kevin have an advantage because they think out of the box when it come to making HP.

    Why is the car so ugly? With this length I would guess that you could place the wheels in front and behind the car like in F1. Area rule , interference drag. Why does it have a wing over the center? Is ground effect not allowed? And this guy wire, ugh. Why are the wheels completely open? No fenders. Frontal area is one thing, but still like F1 scoops high above.
    I like the tail on all those speed record cars.
    I read that grip is a problem there. So even more than on quarter mile cars AWD would be a good idea. I would place the engine transversally, outside is the gearbox, then the center diff. One needs gears to get the power off the center diff anyway, so no efficiency penalty here. We are not a bike, so we don't need to lean. Everything goes into a wing shaped enclosure. From the center diff the shafts run diagonally to the diffs on the axles.

      Ya gotta follow the class rules…..if you can build a better car , do it! These guys are immensely talented and knowledgeable.

    • @ArneChristianRosenfeldt
      @ArneChristianRosenfeldt 2 года назад

      @@djsandvig1 I tried to be bold. I see many cars with completely covered wheels. So I guess rules are complicated. So many classes and a lot of records below what road legal cars can do. Below Diesel. Below electric.

      @@ArneChristianRosenfeldt its rly a engine building competition for the smaller records. look at what they come up with for the landspeed records. a lot more engineering and complexity in the 300+ streamliners.

    • @kadenpolk9550
      @kadenpolk9550 5 месяцев назад

      Its called a lakester class. Not everyone wants to go for the fastest speed possible. Lakesters and streamliners are very very different. Our car, 44, is a lakester... and has run 386, making it the faster open wheeled car. In addition, these guys build this stuff in their backyard, just like us. So lets not insult someone else's creation.

    • @ArneChristianRosenfeldt
      @ArneChristianRosenfeldt 5 месяцев назад

      @@kadenpolk9550 so I could not find 44, but half of the cars in google image search seem to almost respect the area rule. But still the nose already pushes the air towards the wheels so that they are hit an an unfavourable angle, worse than the car in the video. I don’t see how a backyard favours one style over the other. Alfa Romeo once Build a Race car with tanks between the wheels to fill the wake. I wonder if this is allowed in this class. Like you could have tunnels in the body where the air is accelerated to almost the speed of sound only to have a streamlines elsewhere be aligned with the rims.
