This is a remarkable treat to see this in hi-def. I'm familiar with Bonneville dating back nearly 60 years ago when originally seeing it from still photos and grainy movie films. When I was a kid (early to mid 1960s), my neighbors were the Markley Brothers with their yellow #360 Belly Tank Lakester; and Bob Herda with the #999 B class streamliner. When I look back at those times when I was a kid, I find it remarkable the Markley Brothers had the patience with allowing me to hang out with their crew while they worked on getting that #360 Lakester into shape for the Bonneville Speed Week. That crew for the Markley Brothers worked some late nights, as on some days they'd be playing Rock music well near to midnight, as the following day my Mom would comment about hearing the music resonating through the wall of her bedroom at our house, as the Markleys were next door neighbors. She didn't mind the noise, as she was a stay-at-home Mom. Dad worked nights so it didn't disturb him.
Awesome video footage. I've always wanted to go the Salt Flats and watch the runs. My step dad is building a 1977 Harley Davidson Cafe Racer that has some Bonneville history to it. The bike was purpose-built to run at Bonneville. It set a record, then they parked the bike for the next 40+ years and let it rot away. They never washed the salt off and it ate most of the bike. He wound up finding the bike last year and is restoring it to some of it's former glory. I don't think he has any plans on trying to run the flats again, he's just an old coot who loves motorcycles! Good day, Y'all!
Endless admiration for teams and drivers for the hard work, for the people who build these stunning machines and the drivers who take the risks that they do.
Thank you! Went to Bonneville for Speed Week 2010. It is crazy watching a car go 400+. One thing I thought that was way cool and totally unexpected was the dozens of old die-hard hot rodders that had been showing up every year since the ‘50’s. Lots of them still driving the old roadsters they built when they were teenagers. Some of the coolest old dudes I have ever met.

Great content! Thx for sharing... watching this proved to me that you can’t just take a mountain motor, tall gears and go fast. AWESOME video, thanks much for sharing..I've only been once, 2012, gotta get back out there...curious, what camera did you film this with ? The quality is amazing..

Thank you, I was trying to find the best spot for filming and basically I shot at a lot of different locations and it seemed to all work out good. I can't believe I was able to follow the cars so well in the camera on the long shots when they were flying by around the 3 mile marker. The white salt reflects everything and I can't see much through the view finder of the camera. When I went back and edited the video I was really happy with what I saw. Great day out there!
@@johnbode5528 On the Streamliners that go 300-400mph they get pushed because the rear end gears are so low that it would bog the engine down if they took off under there own power. So they get up to about 50 mph and then takes off.

What many don’t realize about the flats is that they are not dry, as the top surface is always pulling moisture from below by capillary action. The surface is like hard pavement that has remains of winter sanding with intermittent rain spots. It sucks for traction!!!
