Film Review: Kodak Pro Image 100

- Опубликовано: 1 сен 2018
- I took a couple of rolls of Pro Image into central London to see how it performed compared to better known kodak films.
I scanned the film using Silverfast Ai Studio and a Plustek 8200i Хобби
"If you don't like the images then I'm a bit sad as I did try my best" Screw that, if you like them then that's what counts. Keep at it mister, I think you have to just try vids and see what feels right.
Aha that was just a bit of a joke - I don’t script my videos so sometimes I’ll start a sentence and not have an end to it!
There are plenty photography reviewers/vlog style channels on RUclips but few of them seem to know how to properly take pictures for some reason. Its more about the gear it seems. It almost makes the point loose some of its credibility when rambling specs and skipping through the actual images. This was great however! . A good mix between actual photography and the technical side of things. The vlog bit was a nice touch. Looking forward to more videos.
I’d like to be a photographer first and make the vlogs on the side but I guess I’ll make some camera videos because people are interested in the formats as well as the films/images. If I’m out taking pictures I’ll always keep going till I have some shots I’m happy with for the video - not just shoot some random snapshots on my street and call it a day 😩
Daniel: "...point loose some of its credibility..." all too common a mistake. Loose means something not tight. Lose, lost, loss all have one letter o.
@@ricdonato4328 Thank you Ric, for your constructive correction. I am aware of the differences between the two but occasionally make the mistake of misspelling. Perhaps the world would be a little brighter if we would never have to read anyone mixing up "Loose/Lose" and "Your/You're". English being my second language I should know better.
The videos that you are producing is informative and positive with respects to keeping Film alive! Well done Jonathan. 👏
Really good format, nicely filmed and edited. I like the content and the humility with which it was put together. I appreciate it's not easy to blog in public but you did a great job, looking forward to your future work.
Really great video. I liked your honesty on being self conscious when vlogging!
The problem I find with budget film is every time I don't use Ektar or Portra, I think to myself 'damn, that would've looked good in Ektar' and then regret scrimping.
I really liked to see you walking in London. It's refreshing.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video/ review. You've helped me make my decision.
Incredibly happy I found your channel. Fantastic quality! I'm keen xx
Loved the video format. I have no issues with any of it. Would watch more of this any day. Pictures were great, will have to give the film a look!
Found your channel because of the scanner vids and will stick around for more. Definitely enjoyed this one and you need to keep going.
I liked that you did that VLOG, I think it was the first time I actually saw you shooting and it was really cool! I appreciate the hard work you put into your channel am I am looking forward to each episode! Keep it up mate :-) Kevin
I liked how you talked in detail about some of the photos and the film performance. This was really helpful!
I liked the order you told your story and how you told it, with the developed shots and commentary on the displayed shots mixed within the vlog
Great video! And the format seems to fit the subject pretty good, keep up the good work!
I really liked this review / vlog style type of video. Thank you and please keep doing what you're doing
This was a helpful preview to a film that, after having seen this, I may not try. I liked your approach, the photo walk, and I especially liked the photos.
Enjoyed the video, looking forward to the next.
Nice review. I enjoyed the format too. Keep it up!
This actually has me hyped for the pack I ordered weeks ago. Although, since I am in the US, I still have to wait awhile longer for it in the mail. ;[ As per the vlog feedback, I thought it was you seemed very natural at it. Glad I stumbled across your channel.
Subscribed! Great talk-through, just loaded my first roll of the ProImage. Thanks for the samples!
Great video bro.
Love your reviews
What a great review! I decided to go with this film stock and it's amazing!
Perfect time! love the vlog style!
Really nice review! All the information is there, video was shot great. Also Vlogging is weird to do I know, but you are doing a good job and you seem incredibly natural. Keep it up!
The vlog aspect of the video was wonderful! The film review was great as well of course.
Enjoyed the video, especially the walk around London. It's amazing how deserted it is early on a Sunday morning. I agree with your talking heads comment - I much prefer seeing context and the photos, though a deeper depth of field on the video would give it a more open feel. I like your idea of including a selfie at the start of the roll. I might adopt that, and include a slate with date and location for future reference. I'm not sure about the film itself, particularly the contrast and colours, but might give it a try. Looking forward to your Pentax 6x7 photo walk.
the color grading on the video is splendid! really lovely.
That shot at 7:27 took me straight back to my Uni days in Kensington in the '70s! Useful review, but I think I'll be sticking to Ektar. I like your studio.
I just bought a 5 pack on Amazon here in the States so tomorrow is test day. Leica R4 and Elmarit-r 60mm f2.8 street photography. Looking forward to what comes out. It looks a lot like Gold 200. BTW I like your format. You're good..keep going.
Enjoyed the video, keep a great work! And do more roll review!
I like the greens, i love the warmth.
Nice easy going style buddy with all the info required. I'll stick around to watch more 👍🏻
What a great review! I have never tried this film yet. Plus that camera looks like a beauty :o
I really enjoyed this. And I like the photos that came out of it, too.
Great video mate! Really loving this film and did a video with it last week with the Contax G1
I liked the vlog style✨! Also i think i'm gonna buy one and give it a try around the city (each roll is about 4-5 dollars here)
love the shots , might try out this film!
Great Video
thanks for this video, going to go pick up some rolls at my local camera shop now for a nyc trip I'm taking next week!
Great vid great photos
Lovely images, warm tones work great here
Really enjoyed this vid. Subbed
Thank you. Your video was grand to give your impressions under the conditions under which you were photographing. Nice to know about this film and I will try a roll as I'm finding my feet in 35mm once again since 1997. Have to get my head into / around scanning / scanners / software etc which on first impressions looks like an effing head wrecker of a minefield😭😖
Great video and the vlogging was good 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Instantly subscribed. Very good content!
Nice to see you get out for a change! Enjoyed the film review...:)
Exactly! Desk videos aren’t nearly as fun!
Oh, and since you're asking for suggestions, how about a Hasselblad review? (outside). Because I just got one! Cheers...
I'll see if I can wrangle one for a couple of days, Pentax 67 first though
Dope video. Going to go out and shoot a few rolls
First time here. Before that, I upvoted your photo on r/analog. What a funny coincidence...
your house looks amazing, damn.
I think I lucked into this film. I just bought it to try it out because I'm planning on traveling with an old film point and shoot I found laying around in my house but I've never shot film so I needed some cheap roll just to test the camera. Portra and Ektar are just ridiculously expensive in Argentina so I ended up buying pro image. I'll let you know how it turns out. Great review!
i enjoyed the format of the video and vlogging in public and getting the camera out in public just comes with time and practice ( look at my older videos) xD but it was a good video and as for the film i use it as my go to "cheap" film stock i love how the colours come out for street photography in my work
P.S your apartment is massive for london and i did just post this comment on my other account, this is the one i ment to comment from
I do the same thing (mirror selfie). Because I review so many cameras, It helps keep a record which camera I shot the roll in :) . Also, those shots are quite a hit on Instagram, not sure why :)
Just got my first roll of ProImage 100 back and I love what I see.
I just discovered your channel and love the format. You guys used to have access to a color film I lusted after... Agfa! I am interested to know what you think is most similar to that from films available in the U.S. Keep the vids coming!
I’d say Kodak gold or Fuji C200 are closest! I loved Agfa and I still have one roll saved for a special occasion. Mad to think it used to be £1 a roll
yey new video :D
Great video. Film seems like it would be great to experiment with. Just subscribed.
Enjoyed the clip. My take on pro image here.
rjwinc.wordpress.com/2018/06/17/kodak-pro-image-review/
Pro Image is widely available in Mexico, in fact it is the most common color film stock from Kodak (besides Gold and Ultramax) I would not suggest over exposing it for portraits, you have to be spot on to get natural skin tones, if you over expose by 1 or more stops it gets saturated.
really like it
Dope pics, dope video, dope colors. Love your IG account. I'd like to see you shooting with a digital Leica just for comparison
I had an M240 but sold it because I struggled with the files 👀
Definitely liked the review and the amount of time you kept the sample pictures up. The only thing I would have liked in addition is a few sample shots done with portra film to highlight the differences or similarities under some of the lighting conditions you were working with.
That’s so difficult to do with only one camera though - I’d need to keep taking the film out and reloading it for each scene 😩
Awesome review. Gunna pick up a box from b and H.
Great videos, you have a new suscriber. I have a question. What is that camera that are you using on this vlog?
Beautiful camera.
Accurate skin colors and more virbrancy: Portra 800 (excellent greens as well).
OK, I apologise if I'm complimenting on the wrong this but the apartment + sunset lighting looks so goooooood
Nice video, what are your aspirations as a photographer?
I'd say your reluctance to vlog and your self awareness about it paradoxically makes you much better at it as you're thoughts are more filtered and interesting. You're editing between talking about shots in the studio afterwards in more detail and at the time on location has the right balance between detail and that on location exciting spontaneity. You're process is interesting to hear as you go keep it up.
Nice film, but I'd dare to say not even near the quality compared to now sadly discontinued Fuji Superia 100 in terms of grain and colour. As a bonus, it was quite cheap too...
got a roll of that can literal that you tell me of some gave it to when i g that his camera..
Really enjoyed this style of video and seeing you walk around was great. Personally I think for this style you should build up a visual portrait of the areas of London that you shoot in for the videos so that viewers have a context for what the photos 'should look like' based on all the other videos, not really like an a/b comparison more just oh okay this is south bank I know it should look something like this and here is what this camera/film adds or subtracts from that. I hope that makes sense to other people I know it does in my head.
I see what you're saying but I'm worried that people would get bored if I stuck to the same locations each time. Finding places to film that actually show the strengths of what I'm reviewing isn't as easy as it might seem. I filmed a Pentax 67 review this week but I'm going to have to remake it because I'm treating it like an M6 and it's just not a walkaround thing.
Really good video, I think it was perfect. You obviously have a good idea of what a good video is and should just do whatever you want. Change if you think you could do something better or stay the same. Enjoyed it a lot, well balanced, good photos I'm subbed!
Nice video! I subscribe!
I was looking for something a bit superior to color plus but affordable. would it be a good film for traveling? (mostly outdoors, landscape shots) - about the video, I really liked it. I could barely notice it was 13 min long.
One reason I reckon it'd be good for travelling is that it's specifically designed for humid climates + hot temperatures. I think it's the only kodak film that they specifically mention being able to withstand this kind of thing. If you like the colours, especially the way it renders greens then I'd say it's a good choice!
And thanks!
shot my first roll today do you find that your opinion that had has changed since then. What do you think now.
have you used since then. again and found it strengths and losses weaknesses or has this final assessment of the film still stand. Looks like might be good autumn film
I shot two rolls recently and really don't mind the results actually. For a non-professional film it feels halfway between gold and portra. Also its a bit special for me to shoot it here in Canada since it was meant for the European market.
When you scan a film and digitally print it, you will have a more grainy image. But if you wet print the image in the darkroom, the image becomes smoother and more pleasing. I'm not saying to setup a darkroom to print your work.... but maybe find an analogue printer who prints images the old school way and compare the different results :-)
As a pointer to your video..... I found it interesting, Informative and I enjoyed it Jonathan! Maximum brownie points for getting up so early on a Sunday too! :-)
I haven’t got a darkroom but I’ll give it to a lab if I need proper prints
An old school lab! Not a lab that'll scan your image and digitally print it!..... You may as well save your cash and print it yourself otherwise.
I really hope it comes to the North American market soon. I was told that overexposing it works better.
I think I’ll shoot my next roll at 50
I like your images, like the vlog too. I like the colour it gives actually, maybe because i see too often the portra color and this new red is quite attractive. The skill tone from the shadow from your self portrait isn't pleasing I do agree with that.
Thanks! The self portrait is a bit of a let down but I guess it’d be a worse review if I cut out the bad parts. I spot metered the back of my hand for the sunlight so I reckon the shadow areas were at least 3 stops under. I could have pushed the shadows down with curves but didn’t so that people could see the latitude of the film not my edited version.
It was a great video. Just maybe cut a little bit closer in your edit. Hunt the ..."um"s... and any pauses. But yeah I loved the vlog, and your photography and videography is beautiful. 😀
The colour doesn't seem natural to me. Is the colour straight out of the scanner or have you processed the colour?
I process it in the scanner but the film does seem to treat greens differently to the eye
Need this stuff in the US
Apparently it’s coming to the US eventually. I think the European rollout was a bit of a trial and it seems to be working well for them
I know you usually use Silverfast, what negafix profile did you use? There is one for Pro Image, but I greatly preferred the Kodak Royal Gold profile with it.
Try it in gloomy weather. Its amazing
Hi! great video! do you remember which iso did you rate it?
100 💯👌🏻
Just show the images and we'll be the judge. I am sold on the film. I like neither Ektar nor Portra but I really like what I'm seeing. I've been impressed by other reviews of the film as well.
I like the review, the blogging was good, maybe not focusing on the blogging aspect so much. but overall a solid 9/10. and I liked the film samples. I just bought a 5 pack and I'm ready to try it out. I kinda know what to expect now. thanks! Cheers!
non-camera related question, but whats your glasses, they look nice
giorgio armani ar7074 🤓
You would have enjoyed the original Portra family, which came in 160, 400 and 800 ISO, and TWO colour palettes NC and VC. Natural Colour rendered softer images with lower inherent contrast whilst VC was a bit punchier. Who's camera strap are you using?
can we use pro image 100 on asa 400 ??
Seems golder than the Gold
Give Lomo CN100 a try, it's got accurate skin tones and more punchy colors. Kind of like a toned down Ektar
Look at the Analog Insights review of ProImage100. His portraits are beautiful with this film. I think your metering may have been a bit off--seems underexposed. Your results are quite different than his.
Are you wearing an IWC ingeneur ?
where did you get this dandy camera strap that you are using?
I bought it in London, make is ‘tie her up’
London expensive AF, but it's my favorite city in Europe so far.
which vlog camera do you use?
Sony A7iii + 28mm
Great video, and thank you for this, I now know what not to buy, I do not like this film at all as it's too saturated for my liking. Gosh, I have never seen the west bank so isolated!
How do you digitize the negative? Please help
I use a Plustek 8200i and Silverfast software
hated this film but i really like you, subbed :)
🙌🏻
I've found recently that my videos are quite boring as I'm pushing to reach the 10 minute mark, perhaps try with a more snappy shorter video and see how you like it, your production quality is impressive however
I don’t think about the length being too short but sometimes I think “who wants to sit through 15 minutes of scanning” and cut stuff out
What photo printer do you use?
Canon Pixma Pro-10S
Thanks! :)
I love this film, its a poor mans portra, love taking portraits with it =)
For me Portra160 still the best ^_^
