Why didn't ya tell me about Kodak Pro Image 100?! Film Review + Darkroom Printing
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 окт 2020
- I finally got around to shooting a few rolls of Kodak Pro Image 100. It is a relatively affordable 35mm film, that is rated at ISO 100. I was pleasantly surprised by the results. It seems to do exactly what you expect it to do - nothing more, nothing less. I also got in the darkroom with it. It makes very nice darkroom prints with nice colors and great exposure.

I discovered Pro Image this spring and it's definitely one of my favourites! Loved all the photos and especially the darkroom prints! Absolutely gorgeous.
thanks! pro image really is great

This is, in my opinion, the best colour film for winter conditions. It gives the perfect balance between the subtle winter colours and the white snow without giving too much saturation. Really lovely.
yea its a great one. really nice soft colors
Love that film! I agree with everything you’ve said in this video. Try it in the studio, it’s magic.
good call! next time i'm in the studio will def give it a go
Ooh thank you for this!!!
I just got my first roll of film developed and I LOVE it, looking to stock up for a 2 day outdoor event coming up and this is definitely the right price for at least the bright daylight hours. Going to buy this :)
great! i think that is the best use for this film. glad you had a good experience 😊
I like the colours and seeing the prints.
Thanks for sharing
for sure! thanks for watching
Hey ribs, I love that you are promoting colour darkroom printing, hopefully more people will get out and have a crack, it ain't as hard as people make out 👍
thanks for watching. and yes! i agree. it really isn't that hard - just need a couple essential things
Wow. Those prints are beautiful! Just received some of this film. It’s been on back order for a long time. A little too late for autumn images but looking at your work with it, it should work well for those duller, late autumn, early winter shots. Looking forward to your darkroom guide. Been wanting to get into printing my own BUT the chemical waste problem is what’s been making me hesitant since my house has its own septic and well water. Interested in what you’re doing about the chemical waste aspect of your darkroom.
hey! good luck with the pro image! i may try to get the last of autumn this weekend. we'll see
for the chems, i dilute them substantially then they go down the drain. i live in the city so they go to the sewage. ive heard many mixed things about how to dispose so open to any feedback
LOL, agreed about the box art! Good episode.
haha for real! thanks for watching 😊
Can't wait for the home guide!
coming soon! 😁
Love pro image so much, I got it off a video you mentioned it in a while ago. So good
ahh yea! i think perhaps the scotland video 😊
The more I see about Pro Image, the more I look forward to shooting the rolls, I have stocked in the freezer.
Great stache look btw.
Yea pro image is a great choice for some casual shooting
Nice video Ribs, I've always liked Proimage ever since they made it available here some years ago. The box design is hilarious, very 90's/early 2000's 😂 I even shot some overseas during some travels and the colours were just great. Kinda like a cheap alternative to Portra, and a bit nicer than Gold (imo).
thats dope! yea i think im behind on this one - should have been using it a while ago. that box art 😂
I shot some in Mexico and the colours were perfect!
Gorgeous prints, mate
thanks!!
I love watching videos that are 1 yr old and see a price that's 1/3 cheaper than they are today 😭. Love the video brah.
Lol. Not my fault
Man, i soooo cracked up when you criticized the box design :D
Great video!
Haha I think it’s a fair critique!
ProImage is definitely on my list to try now that it's easier to get here in the US though I wish Kodak offered more stocks in larger formats (that's a BIG wish I know). TMZ and ProImage are definitely on my "wish it was in 4x5" wishlist. Even so yep I have a 5 pack in my cart right now for the next time I'm ready to order more film :)
good call! seems like it never sells out either - always in stock 😊
big fan of tmax 😁
Nice video, brought back memories from my color darkroom days in late 70s and 80s. You may want to invest in a Beseler motor base #8921 or Unicolor Uniroller #352 to automatically roll the print drum for you (these come up on eBay). Like your series overall! I used Color by Beseler (Tetenal), Unicolor or Kodak chemistry back in the day - curious as to what you’re using nowadays
thanks. nope won't be investing in any motor base, i can do it with my hands 😊
Haven't tried this film. Good to know!
Def give it a try!
Kodak Pro Image 100 is the BEST color negative film, period. XD
I´ve been using it since the late 90´s, .... its inexpensive, you can push 3 stops, all the way to 800 and still get wonderfull colors and almost grainless results, better and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than Portra 800 itself.
Make Pro Image 120 NOW Kodak!!!!
This is quite the statement! I’ll have to give “pushing” a shot
@@ribsy Here are some examples @iso 800, the images are retouched, a little desaturated, color corrected for the series, the scan is low res thats why there is a lot of grain.

Pro Image is my Portra lite. Love it.
Well said! exactly how I see it too 😁
interesting! i def see the resemblance 😊
haha well i guess ill be buying a lot more of this
Pro image is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yea man! I’m a fan 😃
I never liked this film at first with my old scanner (canon canoscan 8800f). I just got a new scanner (plustek 7200) and now use negative lab pro. It’s definitely growing on me now with the better color rendition.
yea! its interesting how scanners make a huge difference. happened to me with ektar
Not really relevant to the video but was developing some 4x5 film (from my crown graphic) while watching this, so thanks for keeping me company while I agitated 🤘
haha awesome. thanks for watching! youtube + dev/scan is a classic combo 😁
Love the prints! But how many prints do you get from your developer with using tubes?
thanks! so it depends on the size of your paper. with about 100ML of developer you can develop two sheets of 8x10 at once. if doing larger sheets, i increase the developer amount to ensure i can cover the surface area of larger paper
First time using this film today.
I went to my hometown camera store and Portra 160 is out of stock so I gave Kodak Pro Image a try.
This film is popular in Asian countries.
Def worth the try!
If Kodak ever comes up with a new color negative film, it should have Ektar’s grain and sharpness and the colors of Pro Image 100 🙃
haha that sounds like a great idea
Looks amazing! A bit off topic but what do you think of Kentmere in 35mm for non pro stuff
Thanks! Hmm I don’t think I’ve shot any kentmere. Is that the same as fomapan? If so, it’s very flat, very little contrast 😃
@@ribsy I think it's similar. Different emulsion from what I read. Flat is good for post processing I guess 😂
it would be interesting to see how this film handles long exposures
good point! i assume well since its ISO 100
It’s a great film at a great price! Let’s face it though man, that shirt you’re wearing is the real winner here! 👕
haha yes! you never walk alone
Very interested in learning how you printed your film
i did darkroom printing!
Good call on the box art! I didn't like this film the first time I used it, but it's really grown on me. I also like pushing it to 400 so far ... trying to test more.
for sure! this was my first time using it and i def like it. will def be messing with it more
I think a cool box redesign would be the box to be black and yellow in the porta scheme or make the box more vintage something like the old kodacolor boxes from the 80's/90's
would be cool if they used modern images. show some love to the people keeping them in business
@@ribsy definately
Nice! :)
thanks! 😁
Kodak Pro Image the best film, idc what anyone says lmaoo. The color is pretty balanced already imo. I also think it works well on all skin tones as well, esp for not being Portra 400
for real! i really do think pro image is low key the most worthwhile film given the price and quality. need to photograph more brown skin with it 😊
@@ribsy Definitely got to haha. we want to see the London vibe 😂
When in UK Pro Image is my go to for day to day film, best price/qaulity ratio imho.
Yea for sure! A lot of bag for your buck
I recently used this film for the first time. For a 100 speed film, I was a bit surprised about the amount of grain, even in shots taken outdoors with a lot of sunlight.
yea it isn't perfect. but its def a good one. i'd recommend it especially for the price
@@ribsy Ha... I tried posting a link to a photo taken with Pro Image 100, and YT immediately deleted it. In any event, I did get some really good photos from this film, so I can't complain too much about it.
I think it’s great value for money film! Can’t get it anywhere at the moment so gone back to ektar 😪
Yea great value! Surprised you can’t find it
@@ribsy just as I typed this it’s come back in stock 🤦🏼♂️😅
That box is pretty ridiculous. lol I should add this film stock to my "must try" list. :-D Great video as always.
lol yup. and yea, you def should add this to your list if you need a lot of film for a something or a project. great value
Love this film, I was one of a small handful of people who begged Kodak to sell this film state side. At that time I could only buy it from China. I live about 200 miles from where the film was made in New York. Seemed kinda rediculus it is made in Rochester NY, shipped to China and then shipped to PA where I live.
Thanks insane! haha - they don't offer any local pick-up?? 😂it is a nice film, i like it
@@ribsy Back then I was a nobody. Now days I am quickly moving up in the film community. 2 years ago I started Andrew's Analog Service Center to help more people to shoot more film. We give away ENC-II hand rolled film (when you make a purchase at our site with discount codes).
We do film developing for cheap and always looking for ways to help the film community
Please review the new Ektachrome E100 :)
never used it!
I wish they would bring back royal gold 200
oh interesting
Whats up with people on the box being white?
It would be nice to see some diversity on the box. I like white people, don’t worry lol 😄
Imagine me (a white person) was to say ‘there’s too many black people on this’. I would be a racist.
Ive used it twice and it preformed very well. I just find it a little bland as its pretty neutral all round
With that being said, it is very predictable so i would definitely bring this along if i wanted a cheaper alternative to ektar or portra for landscapes
i don't disagree! haha but neutral is good sometimes!
yea for sure! thats exactly it. just a matter of cost
@@ribsy 100%
Pro image, the poor man's Portra.
that's what i keep hearing. i'll have to do a test
My god man, $28 for a five pack. A year ago. And it's going for about twice as much now. Jeez
LOL yup … inflation
@@ribsy what part of the supply chain is it that’s doing this?? Silver? Oil?
@@danirabinowitz5049 Yeah probaply, remember plastic is made from oil and oil is needed to transport the things from one place to another.
02:30 some casual racism... 😅
You must keep in mind that this film was originally developed for “hot” countries. Where the film would be in a hotter environment so it would not go bad as quickly. In those countries there would more light than in the UK. So no wonder you struggled with given the light conditions in the UK for the most part. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with having white people on the box. I remember when the camera manuals of Japanese cameras came with photos Asian people only. I think everyone should be equal, but you can take this race thing a bit too far.
thanks for the info about the film. i think its time kodak updates its packaging to reflect the diversity of its customers - representation matters.
Of course the box has pictures of white people on it as Kodak originally developed, calibrated and tested their film to shoot white skin. Hopefully, this is no longer the case (I've no idea here), and yes, the box needs an update.
lol yea, ive seen lots of info about the skin color calibration. i offered to help 😊
Just UNSUBSCRIBED ,
Welcome to come back any time 😃
What's with the casual racism in the beginning of the video? The packaging pretty much features a couple of shots from one wedding, so what? Stop making everything about race.
Racism? Lol
Given the legacy of lack of inclusion in the history of film color science, the point I made in the video is relevant and valid. Look it up
Companies like Kodak should lead by example. Then we'll see more inclusion throughout the ranks. From job security to RUclips videos. And besides surely Kodak should want to demonstrate the film's capabilities with a variety of skin tones, not just white, on the box
