Kodak ProImage 100 Quick Review

  • [Ad/Anzeige] In this video, I do a quick test of the Kodak ProImage 100. This 35mm film was first introduced by Kodak in 1997 but mostly sold in hot climates such as Latin America and Asia as there is no need to store this film cold. In 2018, it was released in Europe as well which is reason enough to give it a try.
Some people claim that the film's characteristics are somewhere between Kodak Gold and Kodak Portra, others that its between Ektar and Portra. The official packaging promotes neutral skin tones and that the film is well-suited for portraits, weddings, and social events.
If you're interested in the film, you may purchase it here in Europe:

Thanks for your thoughts on Kodak ProImage 100 Max. With color negative film, we must always take into account the influence of the scanner operator. It would be interesting to know if your lab has a dedicated channel for this emulsion. Pro film labs take a very dynamic entitiy (film) and quantify it into a static "moment", the JPEG. However, that same film (the original RAW) could have a very different outcome from another lab. The only way to test for that variable is to send your developed film for scanning to several labs.
I shot medium format Portra 400 for years (and it's predecessors) using a large commercial portrait and wedding lab here in the States. At that time, they used a Kodak PVAC, or video analyzer. The operator could see each MF image on screen and adjust the density and color quickly with a trackball before printing the image. It was all analogue. Obviously things have changed, and that person is now a scanner operator. Thanks again for an excellent review!

I also think that you choose the quality of the light and the background with sensitivity. Was the portrait done under a quiet light ? Do you know how this film react with over and under exposure ? I have also noticed that you use the 85mm 1.8 with seems to produce beautiful blur and the light reflected by the model is impressive. Thank you (you and your partners) very much for your work.

I had curiosity to see and listen a review about the Proimage out of my country, since in my country is one of the cheapest color film, and we are very happy to use it is called the poor Portra hahaha, the film well exposed is very beautiful, and some interesting, this film loves prime lenses, the results may vary significantly from lens to lens, you should try brown skin, is calibrated to perform good results in brown skins just like Portra with white skins. ;)

Great photography and very high quality images.
Personally I had a so-so experience with thehis film stock. Sometimes it can deliver good results and sometimes it just doesn't. I see no consistency with Kodak pro image. On a good side very nice white balance, usually the easiest of all color negatives I used to adjust levels after scanning. Fine grain with nice structure. Very forgiving with overexposed areas. But it simply cannot replace Kodak portra, color depth and contrast isn't there. Also resolution I receive cannot match pro grade films. So for the money it is priced,it is OK, but not more than this in my opinion.

On scanned images, talking about color rendition is kinda pointless. Details on scanning is completely lacking? That is almost as important as the camera you use, as the scanner is a camera that repro photographs the film.
