  • Ektar 100 is truly a wonderful film. My first time reviewing this film I wasn't so keen on it because I didn't like how my images looked. Nonetheless, I realized that I simply wasn't scanning it carefully. I have shot lots of 35mm ektar 100 film recently, and have so many images that I now love.
    I have refined my scanning technique using the essential film holder, negative lab pro, and film lab desktop, and finally am getting results that I love. Ektar 100 is truly a capable film and gives pro level results.

    The biggest trick I learnt from this video is your real name hehe. I’m still scanning like a caveman with my flat bed. This was a great video for when I save up enough or sell my kidney and get a full negative supply set up.

    I’ve been scanning film since the 90s. Back in the day it was standard to shoot slide film professionally as scanners worked so much better with positive film. as I’ve mentioned before Fuji Provia II was my favourite film to scan. Beautiful quality. I had a Scanmate 5000 drum scanner running ColorQuartet all hooked up to Apple Macs via SCSI connectors. I would still be using that were it not for the connection issues to modern Macs. Now I run a Hasselblad Flextight 646 with Flexcolor software which is not being updated to new Mac Os’s so I keep an older MacBook Pro running the scanner via FireWire 400 and 800 adapters to Lightning at the end of it. Scanning colour negative film is like a black art. It’s very interpretive and easy to get all sorts of variables from just altering the grey point and so on. I would offer the advice to shoot any and every roll you know u are going to scan of colour negative film on paid work obv. with a grey card or colour chart in the scene….then all u have to do is balance the grey and everything moves into the correct colours. From there you can alter colour temperature and mid tones easily. I have recently done two jobs on Ektar 100 which I shot on my Hasselblads - one on A12 back and another on A16 back and they have scanned excellently. Neither featured people in them as for that Portra is my film to use. Portra 800 is currently my favourite film. The 2 stops over the standard Portra 160 (which I rate at EI 100) is very welcome in any light. I shoot it at EI 800 I.e. box speed. This film scans beautifully too.

    I just started shooting 4x5, and for my first color photographs I went with Ektar, and after I put the scans in Lightroom, I was so frustrated! (Portra 35 and 120 has been so easy to convert!) I was sure it was my fault, and I assumed it was a scanning issue. Glad to know I am not the only one struggling with Ektar. I'm going to make some adjustments to my scanning setup and see if it makes a difference. Also the dust thing! OMG! I had no idea. And with 4x5, no matter what I do or how careful I am, there is dust on there. Im going to try cropping the image to a part with little or no dust and see if that helps the conversion!

    Ektar is also my favorite color negative film but I also have trouble scanning it. Less so in later versions of SIlverfast but it's still tricky. I can nail Portra in pretty much any size but Ektar I find I can wrangle pretty easily in 35mm but as I go up in sizes, it gets trickier and trickier. I'm not sure why. I sure do love it in 4x5 though, it's quite gorgeous!

    • @ribsy

      Awesome. It’s just part of the game with ektar. I suggest you try film lab desktop. It’s handled ektar very well out of the gate for me

      @@ribsy Yep I actually really liked FLD when I tried it. I threw some Ektar at it when I tried it. I did notice it tends to cast a wider net when colorizing - NLP and Silverfast had more color detail. I particularly noticed it with sunset skies. I'd like to see that improved. However, oh man, of all the methods, it was the easiest and quickest, basically by far. And for most images, it did a fantastic job.

    Man, I had the exact same experience with Ektar and after watching Hashem's video I realised it's my scanning. Ironically, it seems like I really need to invest in a digital camera to scan film.

    thanks for the tips of scanning I will need it as soon as I get me film holder :) still wondering the emotion side of colour negative film is the reversed text(brand) side isn't it?

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  3 года назад +1

      yea, if the text is reversed when you are looking at the film, then you are looking at the emulsion side

  • @ruffprophetproductions

    bruh now it all makes sense. Recently I've been getting redscale images when I do my first conversion in NLP. Now I realize I've probably been scanning the wrong side 🧐

    As film is meant to be developed and printed to a good paper, I suggest you try that. Then scan the finished photo. A bit tedious, but the results are worth it. Grain is less prominent and the colors are better.

    Hi, were you guys into photography when Kodak had Ektar25 that was the best emulsion ever produced. I have a print 1.5m x .9m made from a 645 neg and there is absolutely no grain what so ever. It’s such a pity they discontinued it.

      @@ribsy I clip it around my lens barrel. So it's kinda like in a teepee shape. One side is cut so it just opens up. Can gather dust but if you're vigilant it works great.

  • @lonniepaulson7031
    @lonniepaulson7031 3 года назад

    Why don't you people use a scanner, rather than just photograph the negatives with a camera? I use an inexpensive flat bed Epson scanner. As far as dust and scratches, I use a filter in Photoshop for dust and scratches and then after the filter I add sharpness. I scan at 2400dpi. The color inversion is already part of the scanner driver. You can further enhance the image in Photoshop or Lightroom by doing the same things to the image that you do to conventional digital images. Photographing a negative is not scanning.

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  3 года назад

      Hey Lonnie - i have to disagree. Using a "real" scanner is conceptually the same process as what a digital camera does. a scanner takes tons of tiny images and splices them together, where as a camera sensor takes a full image at once -- both are backlit. many would even argue that a modern digital camera is even better than a cheap scanner -- digital camera technology improves every single year as opposed to scanners which are less ubiquitous and less iterated on. lastly, scanner conversion software def gets the job done but also feels outdated compared to all the options we are seeing nowadays.
      ultimately, i find the digital camera process more comfortable and flexible.
