I've got a box of Portra 800 that I keep looking at and not loading because I don't want to waste it. Picked up a three pack of this stuff and loved the first roll through it. Shooting without restriction is very inspiring and allows you to try different things. When you're counting the cost of each frame, it's possible to miss something that your subconscious mind says "yes" to, but your money-conscious mind says "no". Pretty much agree with everything you said here. Nice video with some great balance between accompanying images and commentary. More plz.
I've shot both formats and they are both kind of inconsistent color wise, it just doesn't like blinding bright light. If its cloudy or dark you're all good. Just don't shoot it under fluorescent, those greens/yellows go mad

Lomo 800's always intrigued me, partly as I always see a sort of 50 50 in results, either something really grainy and washed out, or something really bright and vivid like you have here. The look does remind me a little of Superia Venus 800 which I opted to shoot a roll of over Lomo on my last trip. The Lomo here does seem to cope with daylight shots much better than the Superia though, the Superia is definitely better at night!
I love the Lomography range of colour emulsions. I use CN800 - 135 quite a lot, for my medium format work I prefer the CN400, particularly when rated at 200, the colours have a real vibrancy. I also shoot Portra 160 and 400 as well as Fujifilm Pro 400H, again for medium format, and love them all. It's refreshing to see folk producing film-based content, there are some fantastic film stocks out there to be enjoyed. I find me film work is far more creative than my work shot digitally, and more importantly, I enjoy the process.
Just shot a roll of Lomo 800 myself a week ago. Lovely for evening and night shots, and looks very nice with a good point and shoot camera. Really like the results I got with my Olympus AF-1 Super, which is basically a chubby Mju II. Responds very well to flash too.
the 120 format version of the roll has a much worse reputation, and some people think it's a different emulsion, but there's not really any comparison videos
@@JonathanNotley I don't blame you on that one the 67 is heavy by itself, and as far as I know you can only purchase 3 packs which makes it inconvenient for this type of thing. Even just seeing the difference in reviews on the 120 film and 135mm makes me think there might actually be a difference in the emulsion. Love the vids
The magnified views showing the grain are very helpful. I find that the grain adds a nice texture to the image, if that is what you want for artistic effect. I agree with the other points raised in the video.
like it Jonathan , good review ... you know what you can do with 800 in bright sunlight and fast lens ... just use a filter , do like your stuff .. its good content ... keep it coming
I'm a big fan of Lomo CN800, I think it's best to shoot it as a 400 speed film (so 1 stop of over exposure) and only use it at 800 where light levels really demand that. If you want to shoot wide open in bright sunlight with a fast film just buy a 2 or 4 stop ND filter. As you noted over exposing really tightens the grain up and produces some nice colours. PS just as a general comment, the grading on this video is kind of weird, it almost looks like log footage?
It doesn’t hold up to overexposure quite as well as Portra/400H but it certainly gets a different look to it with a bit more light - good luck with your rolls!

trying to research this question but was wondering, If you are using a high grain type film, can you minimize the grain results by using faster lenses or faster shutter speed situations? Have been increasing my film stock 800 portra and 800 cintestill , need to get some of this, great results
The grain is based on the film itself and so unfortunately the speed of lenses and shutter speeds can’t reduce it. Perhaps shooting it at 400 and pulling it a stop in development might help, but the best advice I can give you is to shoot a lower speed film
Way cheaper then Cinestill! Portra 800/Cinestill are up there with Slide film as the most expensive films you can buy. This is ~ £5 a roll which puts it in Tri-X territory

I didn’t even think of shooting both, I usually default to 35mm for my review videos because it’s cheaper and I don’t have to lug around a Pentax 67

I’d advise against using this film with an ND - its selling point is its speed!

If you want to shoot in daylight perhaps something slower would be more suited - NDs could help if you don’t have 1/1000 though!
It’s become my favourite colour film, over exposed 1 stop the colours really pop and saturate (a look I enjoy)

Put your rolls in the freezer for 2 minutes before loading - stops the sticking!
