So I've been singing quietly at home with my guitar for something like 20 years, just for my own enjoyment. All I've ever had is a straight tone, which sounded bland and unmusical to my ears, so i have never sang in front of anyone. Well holy crap now I have the beginnings of vibrato and my voice is beginning to sound more musical and pleasant. Thank you!
When I first started singing I couldn't add vibrato in my notes at all and about two years of working on it I can finally add a nice steady vibrato. I use all of the types of vibrato that he mentioned. But I mostly rely on my vocal chords to do the work. My advice is just to practice if you're a beginner. It will come more natural the more you practice the better your vibrato will get.
***** i was practicing at least every other day. after about a month I could add it to my low notes but not to my belted notes but I can now say that I can add vibrato all the way up to my belted B5
Justin, you're a genius. I did the exercise and now I can literally do vibrato!. Any suggestions on how to make it faster though? Thank you very much for your videos, very informative.
Thank you so much for your feedback and support for Justin! We are so glad VLTTW have helped you on your vocal journey and development as a singer. Stay tuned! :)
You are great brother Justin! I couldnt reach my vibrato until I've done the exercise - but later found it after trying only once - thanks a lot :) And I also noticed you sweating - I know teaching is hard . GOD bless you for your all the sincere efforts for the coming singers in the world!
Yes & I think like me, most of the beginners are trying to push much thats what preventing us from the free vibrato that's produced from the little waves of vocal chords .
Yes, I stay focus or pay attention to my vocal cords with relaxation then could control it more and easier. And, singing "HE" got little vibration around my uvula. I feel it is good sign for me. Thanks for your Magic again. Well, Saturday night is magic night:)
this is a great video! tbh, i listen to a lot of broadway songs, such as those from the soundtrack of les miserables and miss saigon. and i've noticed that lea salonga, the disney legend, has one of the best vibratos i've ever heard in female singers. i have a vibrato, but it literally is just me shaking my on my diaphragm the entire time, and it's weird lol. unfortunately, my voice is naturally raspy and more deep than miss salonga's, but i've always wanted to learn her vibrato technique. this is the best video i've seen so far, which would help me towards getting a nicer sounding vibrato. thank you so much!
Thank you so much, this is exactly the kind of thing I needed. I have an okay vibrato, but I want to go a lot further with it, and it was just as I thought - I sometimes have trouble engaging it for reasons described in this video. It was also nice to pick up a new exercise, because I thought I'd seen all there is for the elements of a good vibrato.
Hah! This is exactly the question I've been wondering about lately. Awesome! Now I just need to find a way to wrap my head around healthy heavy metal distortion.
Me too! Have you heard Justin's range and how different he can make his voice sound. You got see this. Amazing: ruclips.net/video/tnSSp3R9Wd8v/видео.htmle
Every once in a while I can do a vocal cord vibrato like you show in this video, but it is always the slow one you showed. Nothing I seem to do speeds it up. It's very frustrating, but I am going to keep at it. I had quite a few years of voice coaching when I was in private school growing up, it unfortunately wasn't one on one, it was the whole class together, so still better than none and I can sing pretty well.(I think :D) Unfortunately we never really got into vibrato, and this was in grade school (K-8) and so obviously my voice has since changed. (I just turned 30..ahhh) I still really enjoy singing but I'm just missing the vibrato and it drives me crazy lol. Thanks for your videos though Justin, they are awesome and a big help.
I developed vibrato on my own over the last couple of months and I'm just trying to speed it up. There was one time in a performance where it was faster than usual, but it's naturally slower right now.
Dr Sairam our guru used to joke that if you catch cold, you can bring out the best of vibratos. Indian musicians till recently used "Snuff" made of tobacco before the concert starts with an anticipation that vibrato gets smooth and faster! Ref: Raga Therapy by TV Sairam
I have been trying to increase the speed of my vibrato since 1year ,but still the speed is same as always . I've some Chinese friends and the speed of their vibrato is exactly 3times faster than mine o_o So I really hope that your video be benefit to me .
Hi Justin.Im from poland. I'm a big fan of Bon Jovi.and my question is. how Jon Bon Jovi lose his voice over the years. Way he sound in 80' and early 90' compare to today is like totaly diffrent person. And i know from his interview. he was practice bel canto. he had vocal teacher. So what go wrong with his voice, and how people can avoid such a vocal change.
2:15 - that must be why we feel vibrato biologically as a motion, even though the amplitude itself doesn't necessarily change. The cords contract and elongate like a slinky to form an undulating pitch!
wow I am awful at the staccato exercise... I guess I've sung very legato for my entire life. This is what happens when you don't get proper vocal training, I suppose :P Really nice having something new to tackle.
Hi Karan- We have several episodes on vibrato! Ep. 30 "Vibrato 1- Pitch Changes" - Voice Lessons To The World Ep. 6 "Vibrato Speeds" - Voice Lessons To The World Ep. 64 "Vibrato 2 - Faster Freer Vibrato" - Voice Lessons To The World Ep. 74 "Singing With Straight Tone Vs. Vibrato" We hope these help! -NYVC
I think I've invented a third type of vibrato: hybrid. Basically I start of with a pitch bend and then pulsate my breath but not by using my stomach but rather by using my vocal chord. (I recorded myself in slomo an no, there's little to no pitch bend after the initial note and no, my stomach doesn't move)
Cool! Different vibrato types can be combined to create hybrids. Just keep in mind that the vocal folds cannot pulsate breath. And you don't need your abs necessarily to pulsate the breath. Congrats on your discoveries! -NYVC
I'm under the impression that what a vibrato really is in most singers (including Justin) is more of a oscillation of the tonal quality, i.e. of the composition of the overtones than just a plain going up and down with the pitch. Thoughts?
Writing another comment after trying the exercise in the video. To me it seems like it was immediately helping. Not just with the pitch oscillation but also with the tone blending! I'm not able to do it so fast, because the "attacco" (or "on set" dk how to call it) has to be right on the vocal chords or it won't be precise, resulting poor, not projected and breathy. Makes me think that learning staccato fast would be a key to great singing...and vibrato :D
I'm currently learning to do fast vibrato but I'm struggling because I'm have a vibrato that is engaged by my breathing muscles so I really need to learn to not use them and I want to master the vibrato that is happening on the chords itself ugh
Dear Justin I think your videos are really helpful but not what im looking for. I have developed vibrato but I want to know how to fast pitch change like ariana grande, meghan trainor, jason derulo. And also the jaw vibrato like Ariana. Please if you could do a video about it, it be very helpful.
Hey Justin! Thanks for that video. Actually i thought i'm going to learn sth about a really fast vibrato... Artists that i think do that very often are for example Ed Sheeran (Oh miss the eye of the mountain "BELOOOOOOOWWWWWW" or on "I'm a mess": "Searchin' FOOOOOOR a sweet surrender") If you could a video on that i'd be awesome...
