This is the BEST video on RUclips about the whistle register. He has a pedagogical understanding of how to truly sing in whistle. Every other video on RUclips is either squealing or flageolet. Whistle is completely disconnected from the other registers! Thank you, sir!!! I would also add that singing in whistle is like being double jointed. You either have it or you don't.

@@NewYorkVocalCoaching I noticed a few things 5 days after I've learned it. I can hit higher notes with the inhale phonation compared to the exhale one. Highest note using inhale phonation is a Bb6 note while I can only hit an Eb6 with exhale phonation. Is it normal? And also, my falsetto and head voice seem to be messed up because it is harder for me to control it now. It now instantly skips to the 6th octave making me miss the 5th octave notes. I can still hit those notes with falsetto and head voice, but now with so much effort to lower my voice. I lost the resonance of my head voice. Please tell me if it is normal because it is bothering me. Will wait for your reply. Thanks!

This was incredibly helpful. I accidentally discovered this inhaled whistle technique many years ago when I was playing around with my vocal cords when I was getting into voice acting techniques. I didn't start learning how to sing yet, so I didn't recognize it as a whistle note, or that there was such a dynamic. This video was incredibly helpful, because I already knew how to do it, and I got it immediately, lol. It's like magic. I hadn't ever thought about using the same technique and reversing the airflow to an exhale. That's so simple and ingenious.
The tricky part now is to integrate this register with the soprano register so that the whistle sounds beautiful and resonant, rather than squeaky. Dimash Kudaibergen has mastered this technique to a point where he uses his voice like an instrument (watch his Diva Dance at his Bastau solo concert to see what I mean), and he also does this in his original music Screaming. His performance of Diva Dance also showcases his flawless technique in register transitions. They're absolutely seamless and beautiful!

The thing is I'm not able to control my whistles that well, because as I'm new to exploring this part of my register, I'm afraid I may not be doing it the right way and so I could be potentially damaging my chords. I LOOOOOVE IT. Justin, it works. And this video is the FIRST voice video I ever watched from the beginning to the end - laughing out loud. The cat in the end - hahaha. I love it. And I like the way you teach. This is a great energy and I was so willing to try what you suggest because I felt safe and relaxed because of the way you are. AND btw you look like the young DiCaprio ... as you already know, I guess. I send you all the best from Munich and hope to meet you someday somewhere. Stephanie

Hi Leigh! Try playing around with how much "force" you're using. Often singers will try very hard, use a ton of breath, and tense up a lot when trying this. Consider different amounts of breath and try being gentler. That can help! Good luck! -NYVC

Seriously! I’ve been trying for 2 weeks. I have to sing an E6 and my teacher wants me to try to develop my whistle range so I’ve been watching so many videos and couldn’t get higher than a C6 and I had no idea if I was even doing it right. After watching this I realized I can relatively easily get to a G6 while inhaling sometimes. I still haven’t managed much while exhaling but I’m happy there’s at least a sound. I was kind of hesitant at first but just based on how it feels it seems pretty much like the feeling I’m supposed to be going for and it doesn’t feel very straining which I was kind of worried about. I do feel like I need a bit more air than exhaling but I think I might just not be strong enough yet. I’m very excited though, I don’t know how difficult it will be to change to exhaling but I still have a long way to go in controlling the inhaling so hopefully the muscle memory will help.

Then again, another part of me wants to say that I do it just because I can; it’s very instinctive. It can sound squeaky, but it can also sound crystalline. It is a sort of range expander though.

Not used much, but a serious high when you do it. Only done it in practices, once or twice. Fun as heck. Going low, low, lowwwww is fun too, but no where near the rush of the whistle.
