This is so true. Terminology like this hindered my progress for years. Make sure you find a teacher that uses terms that you understand and can apply people....it will make a world of difference in your singing progress. Singing isn't really that hard, it's just very specific and intentional.
Very true. I have had so many different teachers during the past five years and even though many of them were nice, no one really taught me a good and healthy vocal technique. But my current teacher, and also my favorite, has really opened my eyes to what a good singing technique should feel like and it has a lot to do with what terms she uses. If I don't understand a technique she's showing, she will rephrase and use other words/mental images to explain. It's so important!
Ha! Me too. Very "Musical Theatre." He's amazing. Have you heard how different he can make his voice sound. You got see this: ruclips.net/video/tnSSp3R9Wd8v/видео.htmle
EXACTLY!! I am so angry to older teachers telling to bring my voice forward without explaining -_- your channel is AMAZING dude!! you are one the few who actually "knows" how to sing and how to use all these techniques... PLEASE continue what your are doing :) If you could post some more videos on riffs, trills and runs that'd be great!!!
Justin is a great teacher because he always illustrates with his voice the point he is making. Right combination of theory and example working together. . By watching his lessons I understood the value of playing with your voice in different styles. He masters the art of controlled flexibility. It looks like he can impersonate any possible singer.
Thank you Alejandro for your incredible support for Justin! We are so thankful for your hard work and dedication, wishing you a Happy New Year from NYVC!

Wow! This summary episode is incredible! Thank you, Justin! Never seen any other vocal teachers as sophisticated as you, nor on youtube nor in real life! Especially not for free! You are huge, man! :)
I don't sing and I don't watch these types of videos. Here I am, captivated by the knowledge, technique and experience of this amazing teacher. Best first video I've ever watched, I even got to see previews of their other content. I'm amazed with how much the voice can do, and honestly, I've been trying to go along with the content. I have a long road ahead of me... Thank you for your time, devotion, professionalism and happy go lucky attitude; You've truly inspired me!
Honestly, "Chiaroscuro" refers to the contrast between shadows and lights, but on a single subject, not the entire work, but I guess it helps conveying the idea.
Some Italian teachers seem to say to me that one must if one can, to maintain that chiaro oscuro through the tenor range maintaining chest register even to the c5. Something i cannot comprehend how to do but when you hear a tenor sing so loud and seemingly connected they must be doing that. I know I'm wrong somewhere but I love operatic technique and there are not many teachers out there. Would love some feedback as other teachers don't even mention chiaro oscuro as you have. Cheers. You're the best. Ps, I know we don't have to sing over a full Orchestra without amplification but the thrill of hearing a strong tenor like corelli or Salvatore Fisichella is other worldly yo me. I love it.
I loved seeing these techniques in relation to eachother. Sometimes the videos seem to live in their own vacuum while they're actually all around techniques in all types of singing, but this fixes it for these techniques for me. Can you do one on overtone singing? I know it's oddly specific and obscure, but I'm having huge trouble with it.

Hi Justin. I wonder if and how can drinking water help. AFAIK, water and air passes through different parts, and it's not that water runs into the larynx or such. But many people talk about drinking water to improve vocal condition, some even saying it prevents larynx from drying. Can you explain me about it (or take a video🎬) please? Thank you!
Thank you so much for your wonderful question! We invite you to check out VLTTW Episode 53, "The Singer's Diet", in which Justin discusses the importance of water and other healthy foods for optimal vocal health. So have been singing since I was a kid and I am 69 now. All my ability was lost when I had a stroke 3 years ago. i want to sing again but can’t harmonize anymore, is there a way to get it back again? At least some of it?
Is there any future today for a bass in singing? It seems that if you're not above a bass-barytone in range, you can't have any songs for you, except in classical music
Samuel Pikok hi! maybe I can help you! If you can sing any note above middle e (e4) in head voice, falsetto or whistle, then chances are you are not a bass, but rather a baritone or bass-baritone. And I think basses are really useful in choir settings (modern, show or classical), and bass singers are loved blues, jazz and even in some pop venues. (Think about the aged Leonard Cohen, he was amazing!) Hope I helped a bit! :)
Yep I can go up to G5 in head voice, actually I can sing as an alto or mezzo sometimes, but I prefer my chest voice. And it is stuck between D2 and E4 (only belting for this last), I think that F4 in chest voice would be required to be classified as a bass-barytone. Actually, I'd like to end on Broadway as I train for it since I was a child, but at that time I was soprano x) I'd never imagined how low my voice would drop
I think there is. It's always cool to see a bass every now and then. I think too many people focus too much on their comfortable range rather than on expanding it. I myself am a Low Tenor who is currently working on vocal range & technique. Current range is Eb2- D6 ( on mornings it starts from C2) and with vocal fry, I can produce audible notes until G1. Highest whistle I've ever done is a F7 ( C8?) not sure. I myself, despite being a tenor, want to work on my lower notes. Because I want to be able to sing bass aswell.
First time to see this. Gonna try what you said to have that brighter sound I've been looking for to my voice approach 'cause I sound like horrifying. Anyway, thank uou for this approach of yours! One of your subscriber right now. And tumbs up 👍 😊
Aren't there cases where you SHOULD tell someone they need to lift the soft palate, such as hypernasality? I was shocked when you said never let anyone tell you to raise the soft palate! Can you explain a little more on that statement? Thank you!
Great question Kaela! Justin is making a little bit of a joke with that comment. There are indeed cases of hyper-nasality. However, most singers do not need to raise their Soft Palate as it already raises naturally for all vowels sounds. Voice Teachers actually mean to address the Larynx when they address the Soft Palate. They confuse brighter formants for "nasality" and mistakenly go after the Soft Palate. This misunderstanding leads most singers to a lot of Tongue Tension and an obsession with fixing an area that actually doesn't need fixing. But, you're right, there are some rare cases when some singers actually are singing with TOO MUCH Nasal Resonance. Most singers, though, have difficulty accessing their Nasal Resonance rather than the other way around. Episode 60 (and also Episode 2 and Episode 77) of our show should help you understand this VERY common vocal myth and misunderstanding! Happy Singing! :)
