I bought the "Go Your Own Way" 45 RPM in 1977 so I was lucky enough to know "Silver Springs" as part of the RUMOURS package ("Silver Springs" was the B-side of "Go Your Own Way," the first single off of RUMOURS.) I loved the song from my first listen, and I'm glad it finally got the airing it deserved. Among its other qualities, it's a terrific and uplifting response to "Go Your Own Way" and as such heightens my respect for Stevie's position in her protracted face-off against Buckingham (not that any of that is really any of our business). I'm still surprised that more people haven't discovered the original BUCKINGHAM NICKS album, which is a beautiful collection of songs, particularly considering how young and inexperienced Stevie and Lindsey were when they made it. It's easily available on RUclips. If you haven't heard it, be sure to give it a listen!
I agree about the Buckingham Nicks album! I’ve been listening to it for years on RUclips and can’t believe it hasn’t found it’s way onto Spotify. It is a GREAT body of pre Fleetwood Mac music.
Dreams was already a response to GYOW though far more disingenuous since Stevie was the one that wanted her freedom (she said years later that the opening lines were written from Lindsey's POV not hers). Silver Springs is an uplifting response? It's gorgeous but it's also kind of a stalker song. In a Rolling Stone 2009 interview Stevie said she knew then that Lindsey would haunt her for the rest of her life and he had - so she wrote SS to haunt him in turn. She wanted him to feel hurt every time he heard the song or her on the radio. She wrote it because she was upset he was bringing his new girlfriends around - said it made her physically ill and she'd have to leave the room. Note - this was after she'd dumped him and was seeing Don Henley (and bragging to Rolling Stone that Henley taught her to be a real rock star not like Lindsey who just wanted to sleep with his guitar).
I have the 45 with B side Silver Springs. I bought it about 1983. My older sister told me about the song and that it was somewhat of a collectors item. Couldn’t wait to get home and play it. Now it hangs in a shadow box on my living room wall. Great fucking song 🔮🎩🌙
The artistry was that Stevie, of a lower range, sang the part of the soprano melody, and Christine harmonized with the Soprano range because, lets admit it. She could carry both "Perfect"ly. Spiritually, that's no irony either. Christine was pitch perfect, she hears the notes between the notes. Lindsey had to be the glue between the two ranges without going flat. Fleetwood Mac could sell any song with a flat line. Watch all three communicate with their eyes in this performance, the camera picks it up well. It's incredible
as one who has lived that exact scenario it IS strange...and painful to know i had lost the one person in my 30 plus years of living that made it all worth while, who shared my deepest secrets, who i KNEW gave me as much as i gave and i gave all to wish them only all the happiness they had wished for with me but for reasons not really either of our fault it was all lost with no seeable possibility to be regained...for over 20 years then the magic once again drew us together for the second chance i knew i could and would never have...painful beyond words but to somehow be given another opportunity is also beauty beyond words ...i think its one of those things you have to actually live thru to fully comprehend 🤔
The song has finally had made it to the Rumours album in where it belonged in the first place. I'm not faulting anyone here just giving the true fact!!!
One of the greatest songs of all time....and they almost chucked it. That song literally gives me chills. Every time I hear it. And the way she demanded him to look at her on the final hook...🙌
All the way back in 1977 I worked a summer job at a popular women’s clothing store called Contempo casuals. Silver Springs was on our tape loop and I remember the first time I heard it I literally stopped in my tracks! I asked my manager what the name of this song was and she said I think it’s the best Fleetwood Mac song I’ve ever heard and we discussed the fact that it wasn’t on any of the albums. We spent that summer belting that song out whenever anybody wasn’t in the store. When someone would ask me what my favorite Fleetwood Mac song was, I’d always say Silver Springs and I think people would wonder whether I was making it up. Then came The Dance, and finally that beautiful song got it’s due. It’s a testimony to the timelessness of that song in the emotion and lyrical content that it became such a big hit more than 30 years after it was written!! It remains in my top three favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. Thank you for the backstory. It really informed the song for me. Also, I think I was one of three people in Southern California that owned the Buckingham Nicks album! 🤣 and you’re right it’s an excellent album, Crystal is superlative, and sound so much like Fleetwood Mac, that you then get a feel for how much that duo meant to the band as a whole.
@@JLeezy95 i’m guessing it was a B-side to a single, or it was released as a single without being attached to an album, that used to happen back then. But it was 1977 and I have no idea how that song ended up on that loop. It played at Contempo casuals in the Puente Hills mall in Southern California. That’s all I can remember.
One of the most intense emotionally charged videos I have ever seen! There is one more recent video that is even more emotional! You literally can feel the tension in the air! I thought they might possibly reunite on stage! Wow, what a song! Thank you for the back story!

Personally , I think silver springs is one of the greatest songs from them. I love Fleetwood Mac forever. R.I.P. Christy Mcvee.❤ God bless you all out there. Oh, and great lyrics Stevie on this song❤
It is so powerful watching Stevie sing SS next to LB in concert. I have always loved this genesis story having been born in Silver Springs, MD right around the time this was all going down. Magical. I read in the Times this week, that Stevie said she doesn’t see anything more possible for FM without Christine McVee. She said it with great emotion, tenderness, grief. They all went through so much together.
The town is actually called Silver Spring, in the singular. I live and grew up near there and was in high school when Fleetwood Mac hit big. Silver Springs was always my favorite song of theirs, but was very rarely played, I guess because it was just the B side of a single. This made it even more special when I'd hear it. I could never understand at the time why it was hardly ever played because it was soooo good!
@@eveclancy3288 I know it’s Silver Spring …. Just a typing/auto correct error. I was born and went to school there up thru HS. I would have been younger though - …. I went to Farmland Elementary. DK if it’s still there. And Kennedy.
@@DoctorJoanieTool Hi there, sorry I haven't seen my comments lately. It's nice to randomly come across someone on YT who grew up near me! I remember the name Farmland Elementary but can't recall knowing anyone who went there. I attended Garrett Park Elementary, Kensington JH, and Woodward High.
I worked at a college radio station in Fremont, Ca back then. We had the 45 RPM 'Go Your Own Way', but I always played 'Silver Springs' when ever I could, and announced it as the best song from the new Fleetwood Mac album that's not on the album. The other day my 16 year-old daughter asked "Papa, who is Stevie Nicks?" and then played this heartbreaking and beautiful song on her iPhone.
Fleetwood Mac has been my favorite band since I was 9 years old. I'm 56 now. I remember the first time I heard Silver Springs. It was in the middle of the night on the radio and I never heard it again for a very long time. I knew then that I would never hear another song as beautiful as that one. Over time I would try to find it and luckily I did. I've heard all the different versions of it, and all of them are mesmerizing. When I was watching The Dance back in'97 and they started playing Silver Springs, tears flowed down my face. My beautiful favorite song since 1977 was finally getting the recognition it deserved. It's still my favorite song to this day. It still haunts me. It will follow me down til my last day.
I will never forget the first time I saw this performance. The relationship between her and Lindsay was well known and had a life of its own, but Stevie added the most epic cherry on top with this iconic performance after all the years that they'd been apart. It's pure fire and brimstone and she threw Buckingham right into it and it was glorious!
I was shoving quarters in the juke box of my Mexican food dive listening to Silver Springs in what must have been 1977 or 78.....its part of the soundtrack of my life..
This performance of this song where they are looking at each other while she's singing, twists my heart. The greatest love story that never happened. 💔
Thanks for this video! Absolutely love this video and version. Such an emotional performance and song! I’ve sent the video to a few people to watch and I get so frustrated when they brush it off like oh I’ll watch later….like NO stop what you’re doing and watch it now, it will move you to your core!! 😂
DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN, I can FEEL the emotion between those two, I can only imagine how that must have felt to actually BE THERE IN THAT MOMENT.......Just WOW!
I've only ever had the Super Deluxe Remaster and I never knew it wasn't originally on the album. This is my favourite Fleetwood Mac song of all time. I've been listening to it for months on repeat three four times at once. Thanks for this amazing video. It's like Stevie is casting a hex on him or something when they sing at The Dance. It's really something incredibly special. Furthermore my father is 90 and I played it for him lately and he really loves it.
This song has a special place in my heart, one of two reasons being that I lived in Silver Spring, MD, the song’s namesake, for 5 years. The other reason is self explanatory.
I had the 45, and decided to flip it over to play the B side one night. I played that over and over and over! I was so excited to see them perform it and include it on The Dance. I always knew it was one of her best!
This beautiful and haunting song is proof that two people can share such a deep and powerful long history and love and yet… and yet…not find a way to be together…. 😢 But wow! Stevie got her chance to express all that she’d been holding in…and Lindsey sure felt it! Amazing! Love love this song and FWM is possibly my all time favorite band ❤
I heard this song because my mom sings in a band and sings this version. Knowing her past relationships its beautiful that she can sing this song thanks to Stevie.
I was 16 when I first heard Fleetwood Mac in concert and saw them so many times after that I’ve lost count. This song is so hauntingly powerful, and it’s been on repeat for weeks now ❤
The funny thing is that I told my boyfriend ( just by watching the video) that exact same thing as far as who the song was written about and the fact that she turns to him as if unaware that anyone else was in the room. So hearing the story behind the song is just mind blowing that all these years I was spot on. Wow. She is my girl, then and now. Go Stevie
In the late 70s, I worked nights as a data entry operator and had the local radio station on most nights. The DJ played B sides often and that's how I first came to hear this song. Love at first listen. I called and requested it many times. I was tickled to death when it showed up on The Dance.
Our local Bay Area stations played it when it was only on a B-side, so I was fortunate to have heard it in the 70s. Thank you for this enjoyable travel back through history.
I remember watching this and seeing her stare at him like that. It gave me goosebumps. We went to that reunion tour concert and she did the same thing. Our was intense!! I think she probably did that to him every single night of that tour. Lol.
Yessss! Same! I brought my mother to that concert. Fleetwood Mac is her favorite band ever. I was bawling when they sang this song. It’s like Stevie was FINALLY able to get all those feelings out she had been holding onto for decades. Hauntingly beautiful
Thanks so much for the background to this incredible song. I remember the first time I heard it and the intensity of the final crescendo of the song. A real masterpiece.
I sent this song from the Dance LP to someone I was in love with but knew I couldn't have, it said everything I ever wanted to tell him in just the right way, it touched him very much when we spoke about it, because he KNEW it was the truth. 💔
Everyone always talks about how Stevie looked at Lindsey during that song, but if you watch the whole concert, she's constantly looking at him. Watch their other live performances and she does it as well. I think a lot of it is an act to evoke emotion from the people watching them and less about feelings they might have had 20+ years prior.
Agree. It’s many years since the 70s. They’ve both moved on. I’m sure that memories linger, but they’re not even the same people anymore, really. But it’s great theater.
I remember hearing this song in '77, I called the station & asked about it, they told me it was the B side of Go Your Own Way. I called often & requested it. Always loved that song!
Who knows what would have happened with the song if it were originally included on Rumours, but if you were a FM fan and already familiar with the original as a B-side (which prior to 1997 was hard to come by because the 45 to Go Your Own Way by that point was a rare collectors item) it was a huge surprise and gift to have the song recorded live and released as a single. I’ll never forget waking up that morning in 1997 to the clock radio playing the song. I knew The Dance was coming but I had not seen the MTV special yet. I don’t think it had aired yet. I remember thinking Wow this fantastic old song finally got its due. Say what you will about Mick Fleetwood’s choice, but it worked out great in the end.
I grew up in Silver Springs, MD and the radio stations in the Washington DC area did start to play the song a couple of years after it came out but before the Tusk album. The DJ told a nicer version of the story of the origin. They said that the band saw the highway sign for Silver Spring when they were on tour for the previous album and Stevie had thought it was beautiful name. She and Lindsey were still riding high on the success and originally wrote the beginning verse while their relationship was on an upswing and she was just goofing around. Later when the two of them were ending the relationship she added the last rest of the song.
This is my all-time favourite Fleetwood Mac song! I remember watching this live performance when it aired in '97 and thinking there was some unfinished business on that stage. She burned a hole through him! Now I understand there WAS unfinished business and she was saying everything with that stare! She is a QUEEN!
I love the story behind this song. To the man that made this video, please continue this channel. I love learning things like this. Keep up the great work!
Silver Springs and Landslide are my favorite of Stevie Nicks songs. She is super talented and is definitely a Rock and Roll icon.. She can write about intense love. I wish you could forgive Lindsay whether or not they ever share the stage again. It would be good for her soul and end the band with the love that I believe they have for each other.
Fleetwood Mac did make it to NJ. I love Bare Trees & Future Games, they were available as well as a Fleetwood Mac concert at the local college. It was before Nicks & Buckingham. Once they joined, I was permanently hooked on this amazing band. Nobody can make albums like Rumours anymore, it was perfection. I moved to California, & so did they.
Gives me goosebumps everything time I see the live performance video. Song has a very special meaning as I can relate to the love Lyndsey & Stevie have for each other, but couldn't make it work for them. After 34 years, I had to say goodbye to the love that will always hold my heart. The toxicity was too much towards the end.
Brilliant video, thanks very much. So glad I got to see the band in all its glory, with this, it’s fabulous line up, in London when they played here last. And yes, what a powerful, moving song.

13:10 😅
Absolutely agree I consider it a masterpiece! Great writing thanks.
I totally agree it's equally good as Go Your Own Way 😊
Dreams was already a response to GYOW though far more disingenuous since Stevie was the one that wanted her freedom (she said years later that the opening lines were written from Lindsey's POV not hers).
Great fucking song 🔮🎩🌙
proof that heartbreak creates art
Your comment is poetic art. How true.
And love keeps it together sometimes.
The emotional intensity of that performance was unparalleled. Stevie was electric.
Fantastic comment thank you.
I have a lot of Stevie Albums my favorite is Bella Donna
Love her
And the Bucking Nicks
Hahaha "carry both "Perfect-ly".... " I see what you did there. Love it.
I was obsessed with this song for years. It’s so beautiful and haunting. This performance is so powerful and emotional 😢
It must be such a strange feeling knowing someone out there in the world you share so much history and memories with has become a complete stranger
It is, but it becomes easier with time. I still think and dream about her sometimes though.
as one who has lived that exact scenario it IS strange...and painful
to know i had lost the one person in my 30 plus years of living that made it all worth while, who shared my deepest secrets, who i KNEW gave me as much as i gave and i gave all
to wish them only all the happiness they had wished for with me but for reasons not really either of our fault it was all lost with no seeable possibility to be regained...for over 20 years
then the magic once again drew us together for the second chance i knew i could and would never have...painful beyond words but to somehow be given another opportunity is also beauty beyond words ...i think its one of those things you have to actually live thru to fully comprehend 🤔
The song has finally had made it to the Rumours album in where it belonged in the first place. I'm not faulting anyone here just giving the true fact!!!
I have loved Stevie since the 70s and she's still performing at 75. She is an amazing icon.
One of the greatest songs of all time....and they almost chucked it. That song literally gives me chills. Every time I hear it. And the way she demanded him to look at her on the final hook...🙌
The chorus of the three singing together is so great on this song
🤣 and you’re right it’s an excellent album, Crystal is superlative, and sound so much like Fleetwood Mac, that you then get a feel for how much that duo meant to the band as a whole.
great story
Contempo Casual, referenced in the movie Clueless
I owned the Buckingham Nicks vinyl as well. I loved it. In later years I had the cd as well.
Was born in 77 but I grew up memorizing Fleetwood Mac songs especially this one because my mother kept it playing on repeat
💕 LOVE STEVIE NICKS! Lil’ genius girl! LOVE DREAMS! LOVE GYPSY, RHIANNON, YOU MAKE LOVIN’ FUN, SAY THAT YOU LOVE ME! I grew up listening to these AMAZING SONGS ‘n BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE! Brings back GREATEST MEMORIES FOR ME! THANK YOU FLEETWOOD MAC! Because of you, I can revisit this GOLDEN - MAGICAL & GOLDEN TIME whenever I choose to listen …💕
The town is actually Silver Spring.
Was born there too but grew up in Burtonsville many moons ago
Beautiful and heart wrenching moment. I’ve watched it many times. She is stunning and magical.
I've cried so many times watching this...
@ yep it got me too. I totally forgot about this for a long time.
It will follow me down til my last day.
...27 years ago from that mtv concert... and right into eternity of time and love! Thank you Stevie! And thank you Christine!
Oh my god! Thank you so much for this background information. My heart is exploding
Silver Springs was always one of my very favorites.
Silver Springs still gives me chills when I listen to it, just the little snippet you played- amazing, Stevie Nicks is a rock Goddess!🌹
Amazing storytelling and amazing voice. Thank you for sharing with us. 🤗
This song has a special place in my heart, one of two reasons being that I lived in Silver Spring, MD, the song’s namesake, for 5 years. The other reason is self explanatory.
i’m the Silver Spring area too..not sure why the song became Silver Springs..why the ‘s’ ?
@@ross2343 Likely it sounded better in a song that way.
Wow! I always loved that song - now I love it even more...
11:45 to the 12:00 mark was personal as she is absolutely GUSHING with emotion.
WOW... SO powerful!!
I heard this song because my mom sings in a band and sings this version. Knowing her past relationships its beautiful that she can sing this song thanks to Stevie.
This performance brings tears to my eyes, every time.
I was 16 when I first heard Fleetwood Mac in concert and saw them so many times after that I’ve lost count. This song is so hauntingly powerful, and it’s been on repeat for weeks now ❤
I get goosebumps- everytime.
I love this episode, I watch over every now and then
Yes as goes for Buckingham Nicks album the guitar play and the two-part Harmony it's really a masterpiece!!!
Stevie got what she wanted at the end of the day. She didn't get the relationship but she got the song that will live on forever!
And THAT is even better.
Happy 76th Birthday Stevie Nicks!! You will always be my Ancient Queen-Rock On in 2024!🎉
It makes u cry. One great song to remember!!❤
Very intense song. Brilliantly written and performed!!
The live performance always gives me goosebumps. So heavy in emotion. Great history lesson about a beautiful song. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the background to this incredible song. I remember the first time I heard it and the intensity of the final crescendo of the song. A real masterpiece.
It just takes your breath away, such intensity!!
My favorite FM song. The most rage filled, vicious, break up song of all time. Ugh. I'm going to follow you to hell just to torture you. Glorious.
"I'm going to follow you to hell just to torture you" - that was a perfect and hilarious summary of the sentiments of the song!
Yah I don’t think I’d be singing about following anyone to hell. It’s not a place you want to be even if a metaphor… not good.
Rumours is one of the best albums.
That could be but she said she wrote the song about Lyndsey. They're some feelings there when she sings it to him.
Agree. It’s many years since the 70s. They’ve both moved on. I’m sure that memories linger, but they’re not even the same people anymore, really. But it’s great theater.
Yeah but the look during SS was more intense.
Yes… scripted
Agreed. Much ado about nothing. Mountain/molehill…
I just saw her in concert and she did this song. It was so beautiful
One of my all time favorite live performances. Nothing like it
This one of my favorite songs of all time.
💞🥲🙏 Chills each time
Love that song! It definitely should have been on the album. Much better than go your own way.
It was actually replaced by I Don't Want to Know. Silver Springs is much better.
I found it on a juke box in Boston. I played it over and over. It’s my favorite Stevie Nicks song.
Fantastic insight thank you!
This was so amazing! Thank you so much for the history of this incredible song!!!
Powerhouse, i felt the anguish thru my phone - Imagine being in the front row for that performance..❤
One of my favorites never got the recognition it deserves
One of the most powerful performances ever. So emotional.
Awesome. Great video. I watched the performance like 10 times before checking out this video. Its so great.
Same!
I get teary eyed looking at this video. This song is so powerful, always gets to me.
So glad I got to see the band in all its glory, with this, it’s fabulous line up, in
London when they played here last. And yes, what a powerful, moving song.
Love that Story behind Silver Spring,s thank you ❤
This is awesome! thank you!
