Imagine writing the greatest break up song of all time, and making your ex play guitar and sing backup on it while staring into his soul on national television…She’s living every woman’s dream. This is why she’s the Queen of rock and roll
Everybody is talking about the tension between Stevie and Lindsey but holy crap...how about a shout out to my man Mick Fleetwood back there on the drums so high he doesn't even know if anyone else is on the stage or not but just nailed it like he was playing in a studio in a single take.
when this aired on MTV not long after it was taped, i watched it with my mother who was a Fleetwood Mac fan. i was 14, had never heard this song, and i got chills during it, watching Stevie Nicks singing to Lindsey Buckingham. my mom and i were both like, "holy shit" because it was just so moving. the audience gave a standing ovation after. it's 27 years later and it's still just as moving
When I listen to Silver Springs, I don't just listen to Silver Springs. I listen to Silver Springs 10 times in a row. Of all the songs I've loved, I may love this one most.
Obviously Stevie is the gem here. This is her moment. But the way Buckingham stays locked in. The eye contact. Unflinchingly takes on everything she's giving. Gives an absolutely heart wrenching solo and supports her through the song to the very end. Breathtaking.
@@BetsyApple They broke up 30 years before, during the making of the album this song was written for, but didn't make it in. Clearly they where not over it...
What can I say? The story behind this track and how it was shelved for years is just absolute magic. She finally got to say her piece and the chemistry on stage is something else - its like he knows its coming, he knows shes singing about him and its just so intense. Just wow. I can watch this 100 times and each time I'm completely transfixed.
I’m glad they vetoed it. If they hadn’t she might not have gotten frustrated and made Bella Donna (and the subsequent solo albums) - I prefer her solo stuff but I do love her songs with FM.

At last the truth is revealed to the world Lynsey Caroline Riley killed the love 💝 that Stevie and Lindsay with her sick meddling in other peoples lives she was responsible for all their pain persecution of Lindsay for his very name and her hatred of a bewitching woman Stevie
@Purseonality This is theatre. They performed this drama at every show and city night after night. If you really think this was spontaneous and a 1 off you're a fool. And Yes I have truly loved and I have absolutely moved on.
This single live performance is so intensely powerful, it spans generations. I see awe-struck comments from 18-year-old peers to 87-year-old grandmas. And from 5 hours ago to 5 years ago. Simply incredible.
the fact that Rumours is one of the best albums of all time just solidifies that line. Lindsey really will never get away from the sound of the woman that loved him.
@@helenarichardLindsey and Stevie were initially a duo putting out records, while also being lovers. Fleetwood Mac wanted Lindsey to join their band, but didn’t want Stevie. Lindsey stood firm and said they were a package deal. Fast forward a few years and while their relationship was rocky, Stevie ran into the arms of the drummer, Mick Fleetwood, cheating on Lindsey with one of his best friends. And that caused the band to either crumble or pour all of that pain and hell into their work. Couple that with the dissolving of the relationship between Christine and John McVie in the band, the result was Rumours, which is one of the greatest, and most heartbreaking, albums ever made.
Lindsey stealing little glances throughout, then Stevie full on staring into his soul. You cannot tell me she wasn't casting a spell with the intensity of her voice/eyes/emotion. Powerful
It sure looks like it! There is a glare she gives him that seems like it pierced his soul.I agree with someone else that said he couldn't believe this version & video of this song isn't more famous!
“You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loved you!” Oh that was good! There’s no way you could tell me that there wasn’t anything going on between those two. Especially at the ending. Gave me chills.
Christine so sedate and calm, Mick in his own drummer world, Stevie laying into Lindsey like a QUEEN, the cinematography, Stevie's ethereal beauty. This is a masterpiece, start to finish.
Don't forget John... he's just playing not paying them any attention because he's BTDT with them eye screwing on stage for 23ish years ( at this recording in 97)
When Stevie turns to Lindsey, my god. She sings those lines straight into his soul. Two people who have an undying bond but just cannot be together. It's sad. But it created some of the best songs in music history.
I get full body chills every time she sings "you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loved you." She owns his entire soul and he Knows It. Incredible
Mad props to both of them. Lindsay knew full well that staring at Stevie would allow her to elevate the moment either way. It is such a “Go ahead…give it to me!!” moment.
@@monagracia8513 yep. They are both geniuses. Both knew exactly what they were doing…he just kept glancing in hopes that they’d lock eyes. Such an appreciation of what the fans need.
@SarcasticPixie not sure you've ever been in love if you also don't understand how you can begin not to love someone...to have them finally turn around and see you running...telling yourself the other person never really loved you...
Stevie and Lindsay staring each other down from 4:25 on "you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you" this is the DRAMA today's music refuses to bring lol
I love the fact John MacVie doesn’t even look up during this song. He is like: “Nope. I am going to jam on my 4 chords and think about happy endings.” 😊😂
Probably the most powerful live performance in the history of modern music. Stevie and Lindsey glaring at each other while they sing. Even more powerful listening when you've had a major relationship end in Silver Spring, too.
There's a live performance of The Chain in LA that is arguably more intense and emotional. Everyone is mad and there's most likely cocaine involved and it's mega intense.
@@davidcochran113 I totally agree. Both amazing, amazing performances but this feels more like Lindsay pulling the raw emotion out of Stevie and letting her use him as a punching bag. The Chain is all of the Cocaine hitting Lindsay at once, fueled by an arguement they just had before walking on stage and Stevie staring at him like, "what the fuck you doing on this day boy!?!" The time frame between the two performances probably plays a lot into it as well. This performance is like a hurt that will never heal, but the Chain is like an open, oozing, bleeding wound.
I need this performance tattooed into my heart. The desperate glances towards each other, the genuine support and remorse in Lindsey’s eyes as he watches Stevie, the old anger and heartbreak heard in Stevie’s voice… they loved each other in a way that never fades. Art coming from two gorgeous people. Both dressed in all black, Lindsey’s shirt open with his heart in the line of fire.. the tension is unbelievable. I love them both.
It is very cathartic and humbling to watch this knowing a girl in my past who looked and carried herself like Stevie and know I Efed up our relationship much the same way Lindsey did theirs.
"I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you." Truly an insightful, impactful line. We've all been there. Stevie is a goddess among peasants.
This dynamic is incredible. She's absolutely calling him out even after all these years. He takes it. He absolutely let's her nail him with her lyrics. He stares straight back at her and there's SO many unsaid things that pass between them. She walks towards him and he leans forward to encourage her. He knows it's her therapy and he fully supports her and it's an awesome effect. Equal parts sorrow, ferocity, love, respect...
I'm a grown ass man, and this performance makes me cry everytime I watch it. You can see and hear the pain in her voice. Its haunting. Best live performance ever, so meaningful.
If only more grown ass men would cry listening this - that's when you know your parents did good. Respect to you brother.. your parents did a good job.
I literally heard this song for the first time today (I know, I know!), and yes, tears, this song has a special feeling and digs up emotions and also makes me wander how I would feel too being the person who wouldn’t allow the other to love me. 😢
it is a huge mistake that this song did not win the grammy for best performance by band or duo. This version is incredible. The voices are perfect. The shots of the three of them in a row singing the chorus is breathtaking.
@Jim Calzaretta I agree with you 100%! It is one of my favorite live performances of all time! Fantastic version! If you are an Annie Lennox fan, check out her live performance of the Beatles song "Fool on the Hill"....amazing!
Literally so meaningful. He will never get away from the sound of the woman who loved him. They will be connected for life and after life, in a way neither can stop.
He must have really done something no one sings looks him and screams screw you watch me the Queen play with my royal gesture make a fool of him so politly and makes.him play guitar while she is neutering him on stage it's why she is the queen 👑 that's rock n roll
It’s 2020, I’m 75 years old, and I still watch this video at least once a week. If I were ever condemned to isolation and could take only one music video with me, this would be the one. The song, the presentation, the camera work, the emotional intensity, it’s all just...perfect.
The song is very prophetic. After all these years they still haven’t gotten away from each other. I’ve always wondered how his wife felt about the obvious feelings they still have.
@@amy7642 or maybe the truth actually is that Lindsay Buckingham was a perfectionist and at times would belittle Stevie Nicks and she was anxious around him…which is why the last time they were going to get back together she gave the band an ultimatum ..it was Lindsay or her..Lindsay was not the choice
No give it to Stevie, let’s be real, men largely faced little consequences for cheating prior to women’s liberation because majority women had to tolerate shit treatment from men in order to survive. If a woman were to leave a cheating husband would only result in negative consequences for her. he cheated on her despite knowing what a shitty of a position that would put her in, but knowing if anyone would leave the band as a result it would be her. Ie if “she couldn’t handle it”, but out of talent and spite she stood by and wrote these fucking amazing songs so he would face consequences for his actions.
@@eatingketchupchips9567 according to stevie, it was her who cheated. He was controling, she used that to justify her cheating. Probably the fact that she was so coked out was a contributing factor.
It's impossible to watch this without being a sobbing mess by the end. The energy and chemistry you feel is so unbelievably powerful - Stevie singing directly to Lindsey gives me the most overwhelmingly haunting feeling I just can't put into words. There will never be another band like Fleetwood Mac, may Christine rest in peace.
For what it’s worth, I agree completely… I first saw this some 25 years ago, and every time I seen it, the intensity in her face near the end of her song is very very moving
The emphasis she puts on "never get away" at exactly 5:00-5:07...imagine singing this and remembering all of the hurt, the anger, all of those unanswered questions...all of it just flooding back while singing this song to him on stage, AND in front of a live audience.
@@davidderitis9068 This was 30 years after knowing her - he was used to the drama - probably a lot more than this. They spent years singing and wailing at each on stage after they broke up. He's also leaning into it and helping to pull it out of her in his role as musical director and producer. This was the 3rd day of recording and Stevie said she wasn't completely happy with the previous performances.
@@podunkest that's how great an album Rumours was. That a song this good got bumped. I think it made the B side of go your own way. Imho it's one of her best songs and should have made the cut
@@podunkest Yep, iirc it was right before The Chain on some CDs, but then was standardized as being the final track since the 2004 remaster. In my opinion, as much of a phenomenal album Rumours is, this song would've been the absolute masterpiece of it, had it made the original tracklist. Gives me chills every time
If you know anything of the history of this band (Stevie and Lindsey in particular), the tension and intensity in this performance is simply electric. Rock history being made here.
@@lisalu910 he physcially ab*sed her countless times during their relationship. She did what she had to do. Theirs even videos of Christine mcvie talking about the damage he did to Stevie its all documented even the album cover to buckingham nicks! She didn't want to do it but Lindsey forced her
I know. I saw that. It was very intense emotionally. It actually gave me the chills it was so emotionally intense. She really sang frpm her heart during this song. Jesus!! I still have goosebumps.
Mick always looks like he's just getting the punchline of a really bad DAD joke from 40 minutes ago or he's getting to the silliest part of a scary children's story... those faces he makes crack me up 😃😃
I can never stop watching/listening to this version. The way she was casually looking at him throughout the beginning of the song to see if he’d look at her.. and then once he did he couldn’t look away. The fact that it feels like some dramatic movie moment or something.. every word she sang she sang it with such conviction. Like time may change us but B*TCH you’ll NEVER forget me. And him just singing her words back to her and not breaking eye contact until she turns away. UGH.
God I love this performance. Stevie looks like she’s going to shoot fire out of her eyes and Lindsey has that look of guilt on his face. I can’t even count how many times I have watched this video. Pure, authenticity right here. There will never be anyone who comes even close to Stevie’s talent, style, and raw emotion.
"SARAH SMILE"(HALL & OATES MEGA HIT); YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL INSIGHT & WAY OF EXPRESSING YOUR THOUGHTS> AT TIMES< I STRIVE TO DO LIKEWISE> SOME HOW< OTHER TIMES< THE WORDS JUST FLOW>" KEEP ON TRUCKING"(GREATFUL DEAD MEGA HIT).
The intensity of that gaze was so powerful, especially considering that their break-up was over twenty years earlier. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Just saw Stevie perform on SNL and had to come back here again. Seeing her eyes pierce right through Lindsey and him accepting his fate without losing a beat is peak professional performing at its finest. I wonder if there are any interviews with any of them specifically asking about this performance.
Yes. There's been several. although contradictory. One quoted Stevie as saying "I started singing and I looked at him and he looked at me. And you know what -- for 3 minutes I think we forgot we were performing for 20 000 people. I forgot his family was standing there. I forgot our bandmates were standing there. We forgot we were singers in a band. I just existed. For three minutes. Singing to the man I loved."
Forever undeniable chemistry. You can't make it or produce it or bottle it... and no matter how many years apart, Stevie and Lindsey's chemistry is still smoldering white hot. When they stared at each other with those incredible lyrics and their on and off relationship history... wow. Gotta be one of the greatest moments of a live performance.
That chemistry is what has always stood out to me, knowing the context of their relationship, when this song was written, where they were in their lives during this performance, etc - it's not as cut-and-dried as a spurned woman cursing her ex-lover, it's part of a decades long musical dialogue between the two of them. Just as much as she's left her imprint on him, he's left his imprint on her. They'll never be able to get away from *each other*. Go watch their performance of Landslide on the Letterman show from a year after this. She comes up and rests her head on his shoulder while he's playing the solo. It's a moment of tender affection between two people whose relationship has inspired dozens of incredible songs, but is also much deeper and more complicated than most people realize

@@Lenyxx3 - I'm guessing, after the show... Lindsey bought his wife a dozen roses and went home and gave them to his wife and apologized for the affair he basically just had on stage with Stevie though he was fully clothed and did not touch her... some sort of mental adultery just happened.
At 4:34 in the song. You can tell that Lyndsey had noticed Stevie was focused on him. And, he nodded to her as a signal to "use it". Meaning to use whatever anger she has towards him and their break-up long ago. Once she did that. Stevie sang the very best version of this song. Ever. ❤️
There's a quote from around the time Rumours was released where they acknowledge that the band functions because they respect each other as musicians irrespective of their personal and interpersonal feelings. Getting to see it play out live, decades later, really hits the mark.

when this aired on MTV not long after it was taped, i watched it with my mother who was a Fleetwood Mac fan. i was 14, had never heard this song, and i got chills during it, watching Stevie Nicks singing to Lindsey Buckingham. my mom and i were both like, "holy shit" because it was just so moving. the audience gave a standing ovation after. it's 27 years later and it's still just as moving
When I listen to Silver Springs, I don't just listen to Silver Springs. I listen to Silver Springs 10 times in a row. Of all the songs I've loved, I may love this one most.
What a master piece ✌️God gave us all such great talent 👏
So true. Thing song just isn’t long enough. Always hit back for a second listen.

Obviously Stevie is the gem here. This is her moment. But the way Buckingham stays locked in. The eye contact. Unflinchingly takes on everything she's giving. Gives an absolutely heart wrenching solo and supports her through the song to the very end. Breathtaking.
I couldn't agree more...unless you pulled a Stevie and willed it out of me.

What can I say? The story behind this track and how it was shelved for years is just absolute magic. What's the tea? I don't know anything about their private lives
She is legit singing this song, directly into the eyes of the EX (the guitarist), that she WROTE this song about. 💙🤣 Talk about Queen Moves..

This is an all time great song but to be fair, McVie is a decent not "amazing" keyboardist. Musically, this group is about Buckingham and Fleetwood.

Christine so sedate and calm, Mick in his own drummer world, Stevie laying into Lindsey like a QUEEN, the cinematography, Stevie's ethereal beauty. This is a masterpiece, start to finish.

The Chain is all of the Cocaine hitting Lindsay at once, fueled by an arguement they just had before walking on stage and Stevie staring at him like, "what the fuck you doing on this day boy!?!"
The time frame between the two performances probably plays a lot into it as well. This performance is like a hurt that will never heal, but the Chain is like an open, oozing, bleeding wound.

@@davidderitis9068 This was 30 years after knowing her - he was used to the drama - probably a lot more than this. They spent years singing and wailing at each on stage after they broke up. True! Bad romances produces the best art imo
Yadurp. 1997.
Just saw Stevie perform on SNL and had to come back here again. Seeing her eyes pierce right through Lindsey and him accepting his fate without losing a beat is peak professional performing at its finest. I wonder if there are any interviews with any of them specifically asking about this performance.
Same! It gives me chills✌️💙
Except for the live version of The Chain.

I’ve always wondered what happened that night after the performance. 🤔
110% Truth!
It was staged 😂 an absolute blinder of a performance maybes never to be matched 😍
Can you IMAGINE the feelings Stevie and Lindsey felt when staring at each other ??? Such an intense look on both of their faces it gives me chills
I agree. I can feel the tension of them both especially Stevie and how she uttered every words of the song.
...and 20 years after they broke up! Still that passion is there!
You realise, as theatrical as it is, they’ve all but admitted it was to sell albums?
I don’t see tension - it’s like they’re pouring their soul out to each other. An homage to what couldn’t work out 🥲
Their relationship must have had a lot of passion. To write songs like Go Your Own Way and Silver Springs. It’s the fans that benefited with those beautiful songs.
Lyrics
You could be my silver spring
Blue-green colors flashin'
I would be your only dream
Your shinin' autumn ocean crashin'
Don't say that she's pretty
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby, I don't want to know
So I'll begin not to love you
Turn around, see me runnin'
I'll say I loved you years ago
Tell myself you never loved me, no
Don't say that she's pretty
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby, I don't want to know
Oh no
And can you tell me was it worth it?
Baby, I don't want to know
Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me
Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me
I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you
Give me just a chance
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you
Was I such a fool?
I'll follow you down til' the sound of my voice will haunt you
Give me just a chance
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you
Time cast a spell on you, but you won't forget me
I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice
Up
Lindsey's guitar solo is every bit as haunting as Stevie's vocals. It's HIS voice. And his look at her is just as intense. Unbelievably powerful.
Absolutely
He did the arrangomg
I grew upnin the business and this is soo powerful
The guitar solo on this song so perfectly sets up the back half of the song.
Give him credit, he doesn’t look away when she stares him down.
