When I went low carb I actually increased my calories. I spent decades starving myself fat and sick on 1200 low fat, high fibre calories a day. Had an active job and went to the gym. Barely fit a size Canadian 18.
Now I eat when hungry. Close to 2000 plus calories a day. Size 6/8.
    Fourteen years now.

      This!!!
I used to be anorexic . I had an intervention, didn’t like it but it saved my life. It is so uncomfortable to eat while not hungry.
      It is a terrible feeling.
There are some many people in dead end jobs that savor their half hour lunch break , and end up stuffing unnecessary calories for months, even years to their detriment.
Even worse, free sugary treats and coffee. No wonder why we have such an epidemic
Diverticulitis is a thing, and it is scary too. Quit shoveling foods down our throats when not hungry!

I started Intermittent Fasting about three months ago when my doctor told me I was 236 pounds and pre-diabetic. I have very bad legs from Army injuries and wasn’t sure what I could do physically. Then I found Dr. Berg’s videos. Since then, I’ve lost 25 pounds by mixing in Intermittent fasting and switching up my calorie intake after a few days to keep my body on its toes. I’m now at 213 pounds and no longer pre diabetic. It’s been working great! My gf was heavily against it originally but when she saw the results she is now even more into it than I am.

@@freedomtruth3671 Most days I try for 16 hours of fasting. Then a couple days a week, which I switch up every week, I eat whatever I want within reason, while still paying attention to carbs and sugar intake and really trying to limit those but I do usually sneak in a sugary desert once a week. If I do the dessert I limit my sugar even more the next couple of days. My life used to be eating literal bags of sugary snacks a couple times a day. Now I have maybe two teaspoons of sugar throughout my day (compared to probably 30+) and maybe some toast or an English muffin with three eggs instead of sugary cereal or donuts or BOTH and that’s it. My next step is to eliminate the sugar completely and then the carbs. I’ve already reduced the numbers tremendously and my bad cholesterol has dropped 50 points on my last blood test.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🍔 Dieting often leads to weight regain. People who do many diets can experience slower metabolism or enhanced metabolic efficiency.
01:11 ⛽️ Calorie restriction makes the body more efficient in using fuel, similar to a car with better mileage. It's not a slow metabolism; it's enhanced metabolic efficiency.
04:18 📉 Calorie-restricted diets like "The Biggest Loser" can lead to lower metabolism and rapid weight regain. Adaptive thermogenesis occurs, making it harder to lose weight.
06:09 🍽️ Intermittent fasting, if done correctly, can be effective for weight loss without increased hunger or cravings. It can also help the body adapt to burning its own fat for fuel.
12:03 🔀 The metabolic confusion diet alternates between low and high-calorie days. While not well-studied, it may be a flexible option for those who struggle with traditional calorie-restricted diets.

I think the big problem everyone forgets, is ALL sugars and ALL carbohydrates have to be converted to fat before they can be converted to glucose. The body does not burn sugar, it burns glucose. One meal a day gives the body the time to convert sugars to fat that can be converted to glucose. Which improves overall true efficiency of energy. If one is eliminating sugar and carbohydrates and doing one meal a day loaded with essential minerals and vitamins, the body will convert stored fat to glucose and ketones, which is actually the bodies preferred fuel.
It is the sugar and carbohydrate intake that is throwing everyone off. Any sugar/frutose intake should be from actual fruits, not processed fruit extracts. That way one gets the benefits of the fruits nutrition with its sugar, but still just one meal a day, or every other day. But agreed, the total elimination of all sugars and carbohydrates, and doing just one meal a day is best.

Because we all have different genetics. About 20 percent of people can eat non stop, full of carbs and never have a weight issue. Health issues yes, but they stay skinny.
If you can eat an apple on a empty stomach and you are more hungry after, you are carb sensitive. If you get the hunger shakes, low blood sugar, you are very carb sensitive.
Unfortunately life is not fair and we all half to deal with the hand we were dealt. I am very carb sensitive. My dad was diabetic by 34. But by eating a low carb, human diet I have avoided his fate.

Thank you doctor berg . I just got the book by Richard Johnson “Nature wants us to be Fat . “ I appreciate the insight and way this author explains the “should be” obvious factors why we are feeling so lousy these days.
Over trendy years ago I got I’m my head the notion of eating foods from your region, and only in season.
Life happened, and I reach for the sugars and salts, and have forgotten the fructose dilemma. Only eat sugars in the fall, and only from real fruits, eat vitamins C through dark leafy greens , and avoiding drinking calories. Derp! I’ve know this my whole life, yet cheap food and sneaky calories have crept into my pallet .
Back to drinking water with meals, and only enjoy wine/milk/ beer/soda in the winter to bulk up, warm up.
In summer, do not eat “winter foods “ ….Wheat, sugars, meats, that food heats me up and makes me feel miserable.
I observed this while living in Phoenix Arizona, I would eat vegetables and the morbidly obese people around me were eating Texas food, and looked miserable, smelled terrible, and complained of the heat and couldn’t want or do much due to arthritic eating. These people would be angry with me, and denigrate me for wanting to eat healthy, so I moved away. Misery loves company and I wasn’t interested in it. These obese people would say they are allergic to veggies?!?!?
    What is up with that?

Are you incorporating a low carb diet? I find that, the more carbs I consume, the harder it is to control my cravings. I attributed most of that to the spikes and dips in my blood sugar.
Every couple of months I'll take a couple weeks off so that I can enjoy pizza, breads, pasta and other foods that I love. Going back on low-carb after those breaks is very difficult for me. The only consistent way I found to erase my cravings and get me back on track is to do a 3 to 5 day fast, after I am back in ketosis.
This works for me at 52 years old. Perhaps this might help you as well.
Of course, regardless of your path, it all comes down to discipline in the end.

After a 3 day fast, my metabolism actually increased. For 2 months I could not get under 180 pounds during a diet, was stuck at 185.
A 3 day fast starting at around 184 pounds got me finally to 179. After that within 3 or 4 weeks I hit 168 while resuming mostly the same diet. I had not been under 170 pounds for over ten years.

Diet habits and culture is fascinating… and so is the biology and nutrition information..
Its really all about getting back to the eating frequency of our ancestors but, with the added benefit of accessible quality nutrition. The important thing to realise is that it is completely alien to our digestive systems to eat regular daily meals AKA breakfast, lunch and dinner/ supper… Our very near ancestors didn’t have the luxury of such indulgences and probably ate once every two or three days ( more in summer/ less in Winter) and is seriously upsetting our health and wellbeing! We have to get out of our head that human fat gain is not natural; It is, but obesity is not and Dr Berg outlines the eating disorders that cause obesity..
Exercise every day.. if you are young and skinny perhaps two big meals a day.. But if you are obese and particularly if you are older One meal a day Max! .. No snacking and get out of the house if you are craving food and go for a walk. The hunger will go quickly. Watch the fat fall off in a matter of weeks

I have been on "diets"since 4th grade at age 9, by my mom. Every morning Special K with skim milk. Lunch was cottage cheese with canned peaches. After school not allowed snacks until dinner at 6pm. S I after school I went to friends homes who always had snacks. When I went home after school I was starving and went to basement freezer to sneak frozen cookies from the side of the boxes. So learned quickly how to hide eating that turned into binge eating and the easiest food to eat extremely fast are wheat based products. I was the late in life and list of 4 kids. Born 10 lbs, always had long neck, very large feet and large hands. In elementary schools wore women size 7 shoe and wore my mothers mittens. Now my shoe size is 11, in 6th grade I reached my final height of 5ft 4 inch. Looking at the many breeds of horses, cats and dogs, they all have miniature to giant, skinny to beefy. So I think our society is pushing the skinny long legged Grey Hounds image on humans, where many of us are way different, like the ridgeback mountain dog, or saint bernard, or Newfoundland....

No sugar, no alcohol, super low carbs. Never alter what I eat. Meat, cheese, heavy cream, a few nuts, mushrooms. 80+ percent meat. I probably do 1500 calories a day. I love the keto diet (have been on it for4 years), but how do I respond to the following:
“The keto diet is dangerous because ketones are acidic, which causes strain on the lungs (increased respiration) and kidneys (secrete more hydrogen ions and hold on to more bicarbonate). And 3rd, keto will cause osteoporosis because the body will also take bicarbonate from the bones to keep the pH within normal range.”
My teacher said that to me the other day and I’m wondering if he’s right? Then I asked “but wouldn’t the strain just be transferred to the pancreas when we eat more carbs?” And he just said “we’ve been eating carbs forever, it’s the pancreas’s job to do that.”

Theory: Calorie Restriction diets long term create a die off of mitochondria that long term reduces the capacity of cells to do their complete function as well as reduced energy consumption requirements. This result is being interpreted as "more efficient", however in reality the cells are just able to do less and are in survival mode. And now those individuals have programmed their bodies for famine and when binging occurs high rates of storage leading to fat cell growth. In conclusion the body is not more efficient, its been reprogrammed to prioritize storing fat as it only knows famine, overall the body is less capable as there are less mitochondria. Never do calorie restriction.

The liver detects energy intake and then from there causes changes in thyroid hormones. Lower energy intake results in lower thyroid output and this is how the metabolism becomes "more efficient" (i.e., slower) to protect energy reserves. It's a great self-preservation mechanism. So when energy intake is low, be on the lookout for common symptoms of low thyroid: low body temperature, low heart rate, constipation, etc. and fix the thyroid accordingly. Ironically, it is glucose and fructose intake (and not fat intake) that the liver interprets best as energy abundance and upregulates thyroid and therefore metabolism. As such, keto is a suboptimal strategy for long-term fat loss and calorie cycling ("metabolic confusion") is better because you can give your body occasional shots of high energy intake (from sugar) and keep your thyroid functioning and your metabolism high. And don't forget that all of the other important hormones like testosterone, estrogen, GH, insulin, etc. are downstream of thyroid in the sense that low thyroid slows down all of the cells that produce those other hormones.

Also I've seen many people more overweight than I am, by a lot, that are much more active and don't seem tired. It blows my mind, since I gained weight with my first pregnancy (that I haven't been able to lose much of), I rarely have as much energy as I once did. I feel the weight in my joints....so it blows my mind.
But the problem could be more about nutrient absorbtion vs weight alone I see.
It makes more sense because I was "diagnosed" with IBS after my pregnancy as well. (The doctors asked me questions, had me on an elimination diet for half a year then told me I have IBS). Lol

    Takeaways:
    1. The more diets you follow, the less you loose.
    2. Is diets slow down metabolism:
    3. Dieting - slower mechanism - enhanced survival mechanism - body works on efficient mode.
    4. People who restrict calories are also deficient to nutrients.
    5. Intermittent fasting without calorie restriction has many benefits.
    6. Intermittent fasting - you are adapting your body to work on ketones ( from your own fat).
    7. In presence of insulin, we can't tap into our fats.
    8. If you go on calorie restriction without going Keto diet. Means if you are in carbs, you don't lose fat. You lose muscle in presence of insulin and carbs.
    9. So recommended to eat low carb when you are on low calorie diet.
    10. Insulin is a fat storing hormone.
    11. there is a set point.
    12. Calorie confusion - do 3 days calorie restriction and 3 days normal.
