Final Fantasy X: How to Beat the Luca Goers in the First Blitzball Game

- Hello all and thank you for watching this Final Fantasy X tip video about how to beat the Luca Goers!
The Goers are considerably better than the Aurochs at low levels, and this makes the first game shockingly difficult if you don't know what you're doing. In this video I cover some tips which should help you win the game fairly easily.
It is important to have Tidus take one action that gets him experience, which means he either needs to attempt a pass or a shot. Preferably you complete a pass to keep possession.
These are the key points to remember in the 1st half:
-Keep possession at all times in the 1st half.
Tidus must take one action to level up (pass or shoot).
Camp out behind your keeper if you want to take no risks at all in the first half.
Alternatively, pass between Datto and Botta to level them up.
You can manipulate the opposing players out of position by going near enough to draw their attention but then passing before they're close enough to attempt a tackle or block.
Avoid Graav and the Goers defenders at all costs.
If they win the tipoff then it is entirely possible that they can score without you being able to do anything but it; you can either reset or try to score 2 in the second half.
In the second half:
Equip Jecht Shot for Tidus, and Nap Shot (Datto) & Venom Tackle (Botta) if possible
Try to score with Jecht Shot. You only get to use it once, so try to get as close as possible to the goal.
Wakka will sub in at 3:00 exactly and this interrupts whatever else is happening.
There is a good chance that you'll break through one defender with Wakka, which can let you score with Venom Shot.
The prize is a Strength Sphere, which is extremely useful because +4 Strength is a big increase early in the game!

Playing blitzball with the base Aurochs roster makes me realise why the commentators were absolutely roasting the team before they even stepped foot off the boat 😂😂
Yeah, they suck. Especially Keepa...I hate how useless he is, especially at the starting level.
There’s a reason why I grinded up 15k In gold before getting to Luca… literally released the ENTIRE team instantly after walking around signing everyone I could for now lol. Current team is wedge LF Titus Rf zen ronso MID zalitz LD Shami RD(waiting till I get to the al bed ship for that one girl) and jamal goalie. Currently 7-0 wedge has scored 18 goals and Titus has 7 haha

It's doable with the original Aurochs, but they're not great. The only decent thing is that they learn a lot of techniques, and they don't cost you anything until their contracts run out.
Letter isn't particularly great at anything other than passing. Datto is fast with great endurance and good techs, but quite poor shooting.
The defenders are both good, but Keepa is shockingly bad. It takes him quite a few levels to even been mediocre.
It's much better to sign Superior players imo.

First time I ever played them, I went into overtime with a score of 0-0. I got the ball to Walla and he unleashed venom shot and won it on overtime. Truly an appropriate way for the game to end storyline wise.
felt that way after winning 1-0 with Wakka's venom shot in the last 30 seconds of 2nd overtime...he deserves that World Cup after all the years of heartbreak he's been through 🙏

god why is blitzball so painfully unenjoyable, literally having the opposite of fun right now, imagine if it was designed like fifa or something, 5th attempt and i haven't even got the ball to tidus for him to complete a pass

I got lucky and managed to keep the score 0-0 Till Wakka came on. And in the second half with only 20 seconds to go, I managed to put it through with Wakka and made it 1-0.

Thanks for this. The fact that this game is so impossibly stacked against you, and mandatory is just terrible game design in what is otherwise a phenomenal game. I was enjoying replaying the game until this, and nearly quit because of it, because there is no fun in Wakka losing his last match. Even with these tactics, it took forever. Thanks for sharing. I can go back to enjoying the story.
I wouldn’t say that it’s terrible game design-I think that’s a bit far. I would say that this is the equivalent to a scripted loss in FF IX ( which admittedly, I was never fond of either ).
The game doesn’t really want you to win. I understood that the moment I started playing this segment. It’s like this for the sake of the game’s narrative, and I respect it from that aspect.
Now, the reason it ticks ME off is because this has been hyped up the entire time. Over and over again, any time Blitzball is brought up-Tidus states they’re going to win this time. Honestly, I don’t think it’s that bold a claim either. Tidus is an ACE, and we’ve seen in real life that one really good player can carry a whole team if their teamwork is up to snuff. So it’s not unrealistic to believe that Tidus would give them a pretty heavy edge.
So the fact that they had what is basically professional help, were constantly training, and didn’t improve remotely just has me peeved. The fact that the game wants us to admit defeat for Wakka for the final time that he’ll be playing Blitzball also just generally leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@@saikatsune2085 I still call it bad game design. Or a weird mix of bad game and story design. Like you said, storywise the game was hyped up so much on so many levels that a lost (that is pretty much almost impossible to aboid) is downright devastating and this alone is for many a reason to never touch this mini game ever again.... why would you set up a mini game in such a way that no one wants to play it anymore besides a few hardcore gamers?
@@saikatsune2085 I mean you are playing with the worst team in the tournament, but even afterwards, the opposing team levels up as you do, so there’s no change in the difficulty.

Its not mandatory to win it just gives you a strength sphere thats all but yeah im really struggling with this one they keep triple blocking and they have so much more health and swim way faster its almost impossible

Just played this in 2022 on my ps5. The last time I played this game was on the ps3. I had managed to get the score to 2-2 and pushed it to overtime. Down the line I had wakka score the last shot to win it all. Winning with this team without cheesing it is by far the hardest thing in the game.
Very same thing here, apart from the fact that I couldn’t win yet. That’s why I’m here now. But man, for a 20 year old game this looks fantastic and it feels strange how much I still can remember while I play. The only FF on par with 7, if you ask me.

Really enjoying these videos so far, you got a new subscriber here. One trick for getting the Jecht shot, as I cannot do it the normal way, is use the analog stick and just spin it around like crazy, not trying to hit the memories, just spin it, if the memory is in the middle, stop spinning, hit
X, then continue the spinning again, you only need 11, and I get it 90% of the time. Great videos!

Yeah, it's a weird little mini game. I failed it on my first ever playthrough.
You can beat the Goers still; Tidus gets Sphere Shot so if you break a tackle he can score with that, and Wakka can still score with Venom Shot.

This video was super helpful!!! Just the tip about making a move before the opposing team has a chance to close in on you made a huge difference by itself. I was able to win 2-1 on the second attempt after watching this video, despite botching my Jecht shot. Scored 1 with Tidus and the last shot with Wakka in overtime (which makes me very happy, plot-wise 😆) Something really got into Keepa because he somehow managed to block 3-4 of Graav’s shoot attempts, like woah.
So happy to have this match under my belt so quickly. I was worried it would take me much longer. Thank you again for these tips! Would recommend to anyone that hasn’t been able to beat the Luca Goers in the first match, and first time FFX players in general.

Thank you so much for this! It took me three tries but I was able to beat them. Got lucky as they left Tidus wide open in the first half where I was able to break a tackle and score from point blank. Also scored a second with Tidus' Sphere Shoot in the second half. I had Wakka with the ball in front of the goal when time expired. 3-0 was not to be...

Thanks for your video, i played defense in both half, so i get to overtime. Then tanks all the way to goers goal post. I scored with wakka venom shot. And game is over
I watched many blitzball strategy videos and it took me many tries to win a game which I did 2 to 1 (1 to 2 in the game as the right score is my team's score). I must admit, I used Gameshark cheat code in PS2 version to win, but this time, no cheat codes to help so I did this in my own way. Research and prediction do play a role in this game. I love how it can be so rewarding to win the game with frustratingly hard work and loads of retries, especially it's a torture to sit through unskippable 8 minutes scenes to play Blitzball again. -_- What's annoying is that the game could have let me practice a few before the tournament so I can hone my blitzball skill but no they just throw me right into it without practice.

If I could throw another strategy out there... If people are having trouble scoring with tidus in the first half then spend the first half passing the ball between tidus (only once or twice to level him up), letty, and botta. While passing between letty and botta, move them to the back of the auroch's goal slowly. Make sure no goer's are already pursuing. You can pass the ball back and forth there a ton and you can get both letty and botta to level 4 for the second half. That strengthens your defense on the right side and your center. Second half just try to pull the enemy players with letty, or a defenseman like Pheonix does around 8:10, pass the ball to tidus/wakka, and score. Good luck! :)

Ah really, even using these tactics? That's a shame man, I can usually win it first time or in a couple of tries. It's mainly about avoided the encounters and manipulating their positioning. It's not essential to get the Strength Sphere, but it is very useful.
Phoenix237 yeah bro, it definitely helped - don’t get me wrong. But most starts Graav catches the ball and it snowballs out of control 😂 I know it’s not essential to win but the ocd in me really wants to beat them for Wakka

Blitzball, has to be the shittiest, most unnecessarily complicated minigame ever put in a game. Went over the rules a few times, I still don't get it. Can you imagine winning being mandatory to progress?! Would be a nightmare. And that jechts shot is straight up BS. I completely missed what I had to do to learn it. And when I realized it was necessary I was already in the match with anything on the ship overwritten, Not that I would bother doing all that again.

Yeah he is a pain in the backside. Usually you'll get away with it and they'll either do something dumb or you'll at least get the ball back.
Using these tactics it hasn't taken me more than 3 tries to beat the Goers yet.
Same graav always has the ball or blocks literally have not avoided him once in 6 tries.
This is an excellent strategy. God they are so much better. Abus shooting against Jessu is just instapoint. Graav just tried to shoot or pass out of triple team defense up the center mostly, but keeping it away from him was pretty effective. I had to reload three times before I got a feel for it but this strat fo sho works. Get one goal ahead and burn the clock. I was super annoyed because Wakka coming in forced a blitzoff and I lost the ball. Keepa made a miracle (for his sorry ass) save though. I may have shouted for joy at that save.

I just beat them yesterday, 5-0. A new record for me. Everything went right for once 😅. It's part of the journey for me. Always have to destroy the Goers and not just for the Strenght sphere!! 😊

@@DPhoenix237 They scored after my Jecht Shot through 3 defenders at 1:45 into the second half, Wakka interrupted what probably would have been another point for them, we got the ball from Graav (I don't know how) and pass, pass, Wakka took the venom shot for the win.

Replaying FFX after years I tried to win and lost 1-2, but accept it.
After a while, I noticed I left an Albedh book so I needed to play again that game, and because I already practiced a lot I mnaged to win... 5-4.
I knew that Tidus could score with his RST and SHT as hight as he is from the start, but the Luca Goer were even more aggresive than I remembered. Still, I managed to score at least once with Wakka, so I'm totally happy with the result.
I had the hollywood ending. Graav scores on the first shot of the game..I come back with a goal from tidus about 1 min left in the the first half...Graav scores again on their first shot of the second half. Tidus again ties it up maybe 30 secs later.
I'm about to get another shot halfway through the second half then wakkas cut scene comes in and I end up scoring the winning goal with waakka 30 seconds left. Feels good to win that way.
Beating the Goers for the first time is the hardest thing in gaming and you made it look like a breeze

I’m not going to lie I’m at 167 hours now on the game but when I did the first blitz ball match I stayed playing blitz ball for about a week when I continued the story my characters were around or over lv45 in blitz

I’m actually at the last part of getting all my luck spheres super lengthy grind not much left now. Great vid. Trainer/Refresher course for new and old player's. Advice for Xbox, Hold Menu+Tabs RB+LB if you want to restart quickly, might be the same on PS3/4, I'm not sure.
(I still consider menu and tabs buttons start and select..)
Thanks! And yeah, it's good to know the soft reset options. I really wish it took you to the FFX load screen instead of the Remaster select screen though; slightly irritating that they didn't improve stuff like that in the Remaster.

They need to do remake of this game. I’m planning on making a video and how the remake and some things could have done in it but I did play this level. It took me a few tries if you would out but finally got it and actually found out there’s a hidden cut scene. If you score enough points, it would trigger it in the second round before the captain shows up, sorry I can’t remember his name
On my second playthrough the game and god am I glad I found your playlist bro. It makes the game mich much easier and fun when compared to my first playthrough where everything pretty much kicked my ass xD same with Blitz, at first I didnt liked it much, but now I know it was mostly due to me not knowing what I was doing. Thanks for the pointers, made that first game so much easier, 2 tries for the win unlike in my first playthrough were it took me like 20 haha

I decided to use to goalie trick the whole game. After Tidus made a pass back to Datto i made a beeline to the goalie for the rest of the half. In the 2nd half I got one Jecht shot in and fought to get possession back. Then i sat behind the goalie the rest of the match. 1-0 Aurochs😅

I know it’s been a long time but thanks for the video! I won with a 1-2! I got a goal with Tidus but then the Enemy team got the ball next round and got a goal to but luckily Wakka was able to score with Venom shot and i won. Now i don’t know if all the other Blitzball matches will be this hard, but i don’t intend to play another round of this 😂

@phil_zupra_b5880 OMG, no. It's 450 BATTLES, which you'll usually have done anyway towards the end of the game. It's a minimum of 24 Blitzball matches if you follow my video about it and reset data when necessary.

Hey thanks man i appreciate this video! Had no idea about the hiding behind the goalie cheese and this strategy was very well explained! I love ffx its my absolute favorite ff game and highly underrated imo. BUT i honestly think having the first blitzball match you do be highly not in your favor a bad design decision. It probably put lot of people off to it and made them not wanna play...i know like thats what it did to me. But i was a kid when i first started playing i didn't even understand the skill glyph system 😂 great vid!

I somehow won with out doing any of this while never playing before and only using skills twice. The game went to overtime twice and we managed to win 1-2

i love your guides bu you make an attemp to make blitzball look so easy with jecht shot but its not. I tried 15 times to use the goalie strat but once you get to the wakka part its almost impossible to get the ball tto your goalie before the luca goers get it, and score Blitzball is and will always be a stupid mechanic in my eyes However your break down of the mini game IS VERY HELPFUL so when i come back to it later in the game i will defintly be refering to it.
Hmmmm, that sucks. I really feel like this is replicable.
Wakka has good endurance so usually he'll break a tackle and score with Venom Shot. I'd say I can score with him 90% of the time in this game, particularly if you drag Graav away from him first with Letty so that Wakka is 1-on-1 with Balgerda.
The Strength Sphere is a fantastic bonus early in the game, but it isn't essential, so playing Blitzball later on is much easier definitely, because you can sign much better players than the lowly Aurochs!
I appreciate the vids but no matter what anyone says or does for game walkthroughs my games don't cooperate like they do for other people I've been trying to win the first game for about 3 hours now and still no win .... thanks again keep up the good work ... im a few years too late
I did not do any of this at all. I just played aggressive as hell. Keep giving it to Tidus shooting the hell out of the ball managed to win 3-0 first try 😅.
It boggles my mind that we all use this tactic of leading the defenders away. When I was a kid playing this game I thought I was so clever coming up with this strat. But now we know it’s how the game is supposed to be played. I’ve always wished they would make a stand alone Bliztball game

I know lots of people hated Blitzball-- not me! I loved it more than anyone who played the game. I never used this tactic but managed to win anyway. And I played it a ton throughout the game. It got too easy to win every game with 10+ goals, so I would switch out good players for bad ones just to keep it challenging. Most underrated minigame ever, and it could have been even better with some adjustments to the programming.

Yeah, that aspect requires a bit of luck. Sometimes Graav is too good and Keepa is too rubbish.

lmfao. i am a severely visually impaired person, actually blind, so can barely make out anything. my partner who is assisting in this effort is not a gamer at all. wish we had a community or group who can assist each other on their profiles to win this and to get those levelling up tricks done. here is to blindness not stopping me from playing my favorite game of all times.

No you don't...Tidus can't equip Sphere Shot until halftime.
You can sometimes get a little lucky and score with no shot tech with Tidus if you manufacture it so that you get a clean opportunity from close range

Ok so i didn't get the Jeckt shot on the boat, I've been trying to beat this freaking team for a week now and my PS2 is very trash at reading discs so everytime i have to reset, It takes me 5 mins to even get the game to play, Then i watch freaking 10mins of cutscenes just for Graav to catch the ball every freaking tip off and instantly score on me. And everytime i DO get the ball, I can literally never get it into Titus hands cause the defenders WILL NOT leave his side and whenever i do get Titus open, The randomness of the game decides to kick in and i get tackled before i can get the pass off. The one time i finally did get a wide open goal, Like as i kick it, It decided to play the cutscene where Titus leaves and Wakka comes in. This game is driving me insane i just want to WIN lmao
Wide open Datto, break a tackle and get the pass to him, get him directly in front of the keeper with no opposition, SHOOT!, no goal...proceed to snap controller in half.
RIP controller. Datto kinda sucks without Nap Shot equipped.

Just slammed them 3-0 first ps5 playthrough took a few tries though mainly because the kick off goes to them never even used jecht shot either got 2 free strikes on goal with tidus and scored q venom shot wirh wakka at the end

It’s keeping the ball and moving players out of position I’m struggling with, its hard to keep track of which of those little triangles is which and the next thing I know I’ve got Graav in my face
Yeah, it's weird to get used to tbf. Just sort of stay away from everyone unless you're used to which position is which.

You can, just not until a little later when you can backtrack and the ferry is operational again. It lets you play the minigame again then.
You have to beat the Goers without it though. It's doable, just slightly trickier. Tidus can still score using Sphere Shot if he can break a tackle near the goal, and Wakka can still score using Venom Shot once he is subbed in.

Why does it gives me phoenix down instead of the strength sphere even I beat the goers? I dont understand, did it twice still gives me the same item.
That should literally be impossible. Winning the game only gives the Strength Sphere in an unmodded game. Have you got any mods or anything?

Wellllll....sort of. He had the biggest Shot rating, at 99.
He's bad at everything else, and a ton of forwards are still better players than him at level 100, like Larbeight, Isken, Tidus and Nedus.

I know this is a little old now but how on earth do you get the AI/Script or w/e to behave like this. Recently picked it up on the switch and trying this, i'm on my 20+ (stopped keeping track by then) attempt and every time it starts with goers getting the ball running at the goal and scoring (even 4man defend cannot stop it) Keeper then passes the ball and the moment i recieve it im tackled (no time to move or open up fee action) lose it they score again. It seems asthough its scripted to always start with the ball.
As far as I'm aware the first blitz off is random, so either you can get it, or Graav can. Although he sometimes can score if the RNG is against you, I've never seen it be that bad 20 times in a row.
If he did score, then you definitely get the ball on the Blitz off afterwards. Make sure you set the controls to manual immediately by bringing up the menu and choosing Manual A. Then follow the tips in the guide and you should be able to score with Tidus early in the 2nd half to make it 1-1, and after that you could score with Wakka to make it 2-1.
It's all about learning the range that the opposing players can tackle you from, and passing before Graav can take the ball away from you.

Does this match have any significant influence on the story? Like does it change anything if you win?
Not on the main story, no. It has different scenes in Luca right after because the Aurochs won, that's it.
The main benefit is the Strength Sphere. Getting +4 on 1 character is a LOT this early; on the Expert grid you can put it somewhere where it can be activated by multiple characters, which is a big deal.

Restart a couple of times? I had to restart 7 times just to get the RNG in my favor. One game, Gravv got the ball 3 times shot 3 times and Keepa caught all 3, before the half-time. How do you explain that?
Finally though, I pulled off a 3-0 win, just like this vid. Tidus then Datto and Wakka went out with a bang. Best game EVER!!!
It's just randomly unlucky sometimes. It's thr nature of Blitz.

So what am I to do when every time Graav gets the ball, rushes past 2 of my players, passes to Bickson, and Bickson scores repeating the sequence twice on the 10 or so times I've restarted so far? Is my luck just that shit? I'm playing the remastered version and feel like Square doesn't actually want you winning the sphere.
That's a little unlucky, but yeah it can happen. You basically have to just spend the rest of that half passing about and levelling up the characters as shown in the video.
You can try to have a shot at goal just before the end of the first half, but it's difficult to get the timing right so that the Goers don't get another shot before halftime.
Then try and score twice in the second half, or at least tie it up and score with Wakka again in OT.
With Jecht Shot and then Wakka's Venom Shot you can usually score twice. But yeah, stopping the Goers from scoring is a pain, and partially luck-based.

I JUST HAD TO TELL SOMEONE.
I beat the Goers 2 to 1 in quadruple overtime. Leveled up Tidus to equip Jecht shot ( which i also got on the boat for the first time ever). Then, Wakka swapped in, they scored and we went four more 9vertime rounds before I FINALLY scored with a Wakka Venom Shot against one defender. To be honest, I was just wanting it to be over with because help my fuck are the aurochs an ass team but somehow I pulled it off.

i have attempted this minigame hundreds of times. not even ONCE have i been able to get a single shot past raudy (the goalie for the luca goers). not with the sphere shot, not with the jecht shot, not with that poison thingie wakka has. absolutely nothing works no matter how close i get, raudy blocks literally everything every single time. as opposed to keepa who blocks about 20% of shots. lmao
I know this is old but how do you get around the auto two goals the game scores in the second half? Everytime I successfully use Jecth shot the next turn graav will get the ball pass to one of the two on the side and instantly score a goal even if the ball reaches 0 and still moves and scores for some reason my ai at this point will always begin to swin in circles 2-3 times before taking off to follow them, this will also happen as soon as wakkas is brought out, any tips would be much appreciated I am currently on my 53rd try and still failing
Hmmm, they don't get auto-goals man....you can get unlucky and they'll break through and score sometimes, but they can't ever score when the SHT has reached zero. That's literally impossible in this game as none of the Goers can put Keepa to sleep.
Check you've not got the controls set to Auto in Blitzball...you have to open the menu whilst playing (I think it's Triangle?) And change the control off auto onto manual.
With the strategies in the video, the game is quite winnable.
