@DarkFrozenDepths I think the reflects do stop at some point in ff7. I remember as a kid causing the reflect chain to see what woukd happen and I left the room. At some point the reflect stopped because I came back in to enemies giving my party the hurt.
I'll take a stab at the hint and say it'll be some sort of Yuna/Lulu duo challenge but they can only use physical attacks. I think the hint comment was about giving them evade and counter later, not for a counter only challenge like this one, but just a way to let them get a slight bit more damage on top of their own basic attacks *edit to add that they can still use items/spells for healing and defensive buffs, but any damage output can only be done with basic attack or from counters.

I agree with you at the 12:00 mark - manually counterattacking does not seem like it's in the spirit of the challenge. But instead of just calling it a fail and giving up I would suggest keeping a count of how many fights you had to bend the rules like that for, and then include that in the wrap-up.
i feel like for a run like this, even with it modded in, you can't feasibly start until Mihen. specifically because most of the bosses cant trigger the counter naturally in some situations. making it an attack/item only until Mihen, then counter only from there could save some headaches or feeling like the run is failed by manual counters. then again, maybe the manual countering could be worked into it, making it a no magic run until Mihen instead.

The reason why counter get not trigger are. AOE attack do not trigger it. Attack that do special damage. Thats why you can fix the ruke for these 2 since you counter a attack and the game does not allow it in the first place Counter weapon for Tidus can be bougth at mushroom rock earlist. For counter challenge in FF10 you want speed not to high or you get capal tunnle syndrom just pressing Triangle.
I'd say when it comes to manual counter it should be allowed, unless doing a manual attack has a higher base damage than an auto-counter. However, as X does not have that as a feature you should be allowed to do so for any attack that hits but does not trigger counter. "Hits" specifically as with the base counter skill, if the attack does not land counter does not get triggered. Hope this was a good enough reason as to why it should be allowed. Can't wait to see what you do next Primal! Just make sure Daph gets some Bahumat action soon.

It's really refreshing to see someone actually front up on a challenge video and say no, it's not possible. I can't remember the last time i saw a legit challenge video, most should be titled "Can i beat (game) using only X, except for when i use Y and Z to carry on regardless and make a longer video".

About the counter - attack bit at 10 min or so. I think the attacking thing is fine, but as a penalty I would ban healing or defending until the boss' next action. Using equipment swapping to waste turns. However I think the Counter skill you can unlock on the sphere grid would be acceptable and I probably would have modded that in instead of the weapons
For the sake of this kind of challenge run, because it is already going to be very difficult, you should be permitted to just mod in Counter and Magic Counter weapons for everyone at the start, and absolutely impliment a "attack once per special attack that doesn't trigger counter if I can't get normal counters to trigger" rule.
10:00 - I would consider it a failure, but keep going and count in how many fights do you have to actually attack (I would count tutorials and previous fight with Sin as well). Very good video by the way :)

One interesting challenge would be "Can you beat Final Fantasy X without saving?" The point is no restoring of HP or MP and no Rez of Aeons with the saves. The Game can only be saved when you get restored by the story anyways.

If you allow yourself to use mods to get Counterattack on Tidus, why not mod it onto everyone? I find it silly to turn half the game into a Tidus-only run.

Thoughts on the Killika boss fight RE: Sigh not triggering counter: I watch another channel that does a lot of challenge runs, GameChamp3000. She often starts a challenge run that seems very promising and then eventually something like this just shuts the challenge down instantly. Some wall that is impossible to pass with the given rules of the challenge. In those cases, rather than saying "Challenge failed" and ending the video she pivots to "Challenge failed. New challenge: what is the MINIMUM number of (whatever the challenge broke over) needed to (complete Challenge)". So for example this challenge might be Failed in Killika but it would become "What is the MINIMUM number of fights needed to complete the game without using counter-attacks). This allows more flexibility in attempting "fun" challenge concepts since even if they're impossible you can still try to minimize the failure and see what outcome you can get. And fun is very important here, I think. So many challenges are a slog, you shouldn't avoid doing something fun just because it might not be possible
i try to stick to my rules as much as possible, i did used to do something a little like gamechamp but everybody called me out and said i was just stealing there idea's so i stopped doing it

Yeah, I think you might be just a little too harsh on yourself. I would remind you that you've done quite a few challenges for this game, and the more specific/niche they get, the harder it's going to be to get a "pure" run completed, as it's often not how the developers intended you to play the game. (Seymour challenge, I'm looking at you.) It's honestly just fun to watch you do them to the truest/best of your abilities, even if the occasional rule gets bent a bit.
i think using attack after taking damage without triggering counter should be considered as fail. And from that point on just to find out what enemies can be dealt with using counter only. If the ability doesn't trigger it's not a counter as a counter doesn't use up your turn. So no you can not beat FFX using only Counter regardless of what happens at the end. Also is it pronounced Ko-Fi or Ko-Fee
Anima's pain attack actually has 99% chance of killing a character, so if you get really lucky, you could actually survive it a couple of times(this only applies to the version of Pain that Seymour's Anima uses). Alternatively, you could have used an aeon and went with the "attack back after being hit" thing. Obviously this is your challenge and your rules, but it would've been fun to see this done on some later fights in the game.
@@Primalliquid92 I thought the only damage you could do was counter. Since Cheer is not an attack I thought it counted. Also, would reflect be considered a counter? I think you can get SOS reflect and other SOS items around that area.

On the debate of the Sigh. I do think it's a case by case basis, I think your solution plays by the rules for this challenge, after all, the point of a challenge run is to make the game harder, not impossible. That's just me though, you may feel different

With counterattack being unable to trigger, you did the next best thing which is manually doing so as if it were a counterattack. It's legal to do that against Geneaux. Nice job!
Definitely the sinspawn and blitzball machina were fails, imo. However, just counting the number of failures and going on is a fine way to get through the whole challenge run.

A game where counter sounds overpowered, what can possibly go wrong? Unfortunately, a lot of things. I will say least you gave it the best honest try. Also I wouldn't worry being too hard on yourself, a lot of challenge runners had to do things they don't like cause it was a no choice situation but we still like watching the challenge run anyhow long as its still entertaining to watch.
I agree in the spirit of the challenge attacking after you get hit shouldnt be allowed BUT i think for future challenges bending the rules in such a way in order to press on should be fine. Honestly even just a compilation at the end of here are all the bosses it worked on and heres the ones that said nope. Obviously assuming that doesn't just break your game entirely
I think the minor rule bends are fine because they're literally situations where you CAN'T trigger it, and the challenge would be dead on arrival otherwise and we'd get less entertainment.

From what I understand, you can counter an attack command and white/black magic command, but you cannot counter abilities and skills.
I think you are way too hard on yourself. Manually countering is a harder version of countering, so that should be allowed.

As Aeons use Boss-specific camera angles, Yojmbo probably would softlock mandatory and Boss encounters until you fight Seymour Flux.

So for example this challenge might be Failed in Killika but it would become "What is the MINIMUM number of fights needed to complete the game without using counter-attacks). This allows more flexibility in attempting "fun" challenge concepts since even if they're impossible you can still try to minimize the failure and see what outcome you can get. And fun is very important here, I think. So many challenges are a slog, you shouldn't avoid doing something fun just because it might not be possible
i try to stick to my rules as much as possible, i did used to do something a little like gamechamp but everybody called me out and said i was just stealing there idea's so i stopped doing it

Yeah, I think you might be just a little too harsh on yourself. I would remind you that you've done quite a few challenges for this game, and the more specific/niche they get, the harder it's going to be to get a "pure" run completed, as it's often not how the developers intended you to play the game. (Seymour challenge, I'm looking at you.) It's honestly just fun to watch you do them to the truest/best of your abilities, even if the occasional rule gets bent a bit.

i think using attack after taking damage without triggering counter should be considered as fail. And from that point on just to find out what enemies can be dealt with using counter only. If the ability doesn't trigger it's not a counter as a counter doesn't use up your turn. So no you can not beat FFX using only Counter regardless of what happens at the end. Also is it pronounced Ko-Fi or Ko-Fee

Anima's pain attack actually has 99% chance of killing a character, so if you get really lucky, you could actually survive it a couple of times(this only applies to the version of Pain that Seymour's Anima uses). Alternatively, you could have used an aeon and went with the "attack back after being hit" thing. Obviously this is your challenge and your rules, but it would've been fun to see this done on some later fights in the game.

Why not use the rally ability? (Or whatever it is called) it doesnt do damage but it does boost damage and defence.

@@Primalliquid92 I thought the only damage you could do was counter. Since Cheer is not an attack I thought it counted.
Also, would reflect be considered a counter? I think you can get SOS reflect and other SOS items around that area.
Am i a terrible person for wanting to see you keep going along and just have a "We had to cheat for these bosses" list at the end? I do think it's a case by case basis, I think your solution plays by the rules for this challenge, after all, the point of a challenge run is to make the game harder, not impossible. That's just me though, you may feel different

With counterattack being unable to trigger, you did the next best thing which is manually doing so as if it were a counterattack. It's legal to do that against Geneaux. Nice job!
Definitely the sinspawn and blitzball machina were fails, imo.
However, just counting the number of failures and going on is a fine way to get through the whole challenge run.

A game where counter sounds overpowered, what can possibly go wrong? Unfortunately, a lot of things. I will say least you gave it the best honest try. Also I wouldn't worry being too hard on yourself, a lot of challenge runners had to do things they don't like cause it was a no choice situation but we still like watching the challenge run anyhow long as its still entertaining to watch.

Honestly until you could customize Counter Attack I just assumed you would only attack after an enemy hit you.

I agree in the spirit of the challenge attacking after you get hit shouldnt be allowed BUT i think for future challenges bending the rules in such a way in order to press on should be fine. Honestly even just a compilation at the end of here are all the bosses it worked on and heres the ones that said nope. Obviously assuming that doesn't just break your game entirely

I think the minor rule bends are fine because they're literally situations where you CAN'T trigger it, and the challenge would be dead on arrival otherwise and we'd get less entertainment.
