  • Shuntaro Furukawa has announced that more information about the next Nintendo console, the successor to the Switch, is coming. Although it's currently Switch 2 sizzle with very little steak, it's still an important moment. I don't normally do these sorts of videos but I couldn't let this moment pass without marking it!

    While we certainly had very good rumors about this - we've been burned before with rumors that never came true. To me - an official announcement, even one with barely more than a timeline of another announcement - is a breath of fresh air.

    With the possibility that the next console might be more iterative than revolutionary, the decision to highlight the Switch's age might be a *deliberate* effort to make people think of it as getting old, priming them to move on to a new but highly similar piece of hardware.

    • @ruolbu
      @ruolbu 2 месяца назад +3

      yeah, to me this reads as making people feel nostalgic about seeing the switch for the first time and implying they will get something similar but better this time.

    To take your last point a little bit further - this announcement ensures that the next Nintendo Direct focuses on the games they want to promote, rather than speculation about why they didn’t mention the next console.
    It’s a marketing move to create space for hyping non-new-console products.

    I would hope that the Switch 2 would be revealed this year and released early next year, though the fact that Furukawa specified "fiscal year" makes me concerned.

    • @coolwing79
      @coolwing79 2 месяца назад +2

      They could be saying "during this fiscal year" to rile up investors and bring their stock price up. If the investors know the next system will be revealed this fiscal year, then they're more likely to invest in the company right now knowing how popular the Switch has been.

      I don't think they have the release date set in stone yet; it could launch in December, it could launch in May. There's still no confirmation that they will definitely make it for this fiscal year,. There are other factors also; maybe the Switch is selling so well that they want to squeeze every possible drop before interest fades; by properly announcing Switch 2 you miss out on a bit more sales of the Switch 1.
      Unlike the Wii U, where Nintendo was just wishing to move past that and release Switch soon enough, I don't see them in a rush to jump to next gen; there's a lot of marketing budget, exclusives, and other investments that are going to take a toll on the company if they're not succesful. I don't blame them for playing it safe with the Switch as long as they can.

I’m just of the impression Nintendo should have something lined up for him this year considering that it’s been like 10 years since tropical freeze, 25 years since DK64, and 30 years since the original DK Country. it’s a milestone year for him. If Nintendo really is gonna give him the cold shoulder this year considering all of that, first I think that’s a mistake, but it also would make me think that if they are gonna have him wait till the successor, that they better have something BIG coming for him.

    Furukawa is so dry and corporate... He's good at his job, but I do miss the ol' Nintendo carisma from the Iwata-Reggie era. We would NEVER see Furukawa and Doug Bowser trading punches for a Smash reveal trailer.

    • @Dairunt1
      @Dairunt1 2 месяца назад +21

      That's the danger of being succesful; they won't try anything weird or quirky because they don't need to. Those Iwata and Reggie bits were legendary but they were made out of necessity; they were in essence, filler to make big Directs but not announce much. I say this with a heavy heart because E3 2014 was maybe their best E3 ever, and see them releasing hit after hit, with such charm and trying so hard to push the Wii U against all odds is admirable.
      But with the success of the Switch and Iwata's death, this is definitely another era of Nintendo. I don't expect them to go back to the Iwata sketches unless they're in a Wii U situation again.

    If Nintendo next console turn out to be weaker than ps4pro then the writing is on the wall for Nintendo. pc handhelds are killing their market sooner or later it's just inevitable

    • @mattblair2134
      @mattblair2134 2 месяца назад +7

      A flooded market of PC based handhelds creates a fragmented experience, which one preforms better, which one has the best battery. There are so reasons why PC handhelds will also take a long time to gain the traction of dedicated console hardware. Price is certainly the first point. Nintendo has been around for a long time, just because the console is not as powerful as X has little bearing for writing on a wall so to speak. This entire channel is dedicated to a deep analysis of Nintendo’s business which is not in anyway solely orbiting a specific console’s specs.

    • @Dairunt1
      @Dairunt1 2 месяца назад

      The Switch has an advantage that PC handhelds don't; ARM architecture. Compared to x86, ARM is much more power-efficient so you don't need to have big, loud fans and bulky batteries to have decent power/performance (This is a problem specially for the ROG Ally).
      I love the Steam Deck; I've been obsessed with wanting to buy one but I'm still waiting for Nintendo to properly announce the Switch 2 and see if it convinces me, but there's a reason as to why they don't sell Steam Decks on store shelves, and why their online delivery doesn't cover many countries yet. It's because, even though it has a loyal fanbase and it's a fantastic product, it's still pretty niche compared to the millions of potential users.
      I don't know what to expect with the Swtich 2's power, but what it needs to succed is; good marketing, great exclusives and a graphical jump that, while not massive, makes you realize they can't just port that Switch 2 game to Switch 1. Even though I love the idea of PC handhelds, and I'm just waiting for the right time to get one, it will sadly still be a niche proposition.
