- In this video, we're going to talk about how to use the Blender mirror modifier to mirror objects along an axis in Blender. This can be a SIGNIFICANT timesaver when it comes to modeling symmetrical objects in Blender.
I'd love to hear from you in the comments below - what modifier do YOU use most when modeling in Blender?

Hi everyone! What's your favorite Blender modifier? We'll be talking about some more modifiers in the future, so let me know! :)
Boolean modifiers are great:)
after Sub-D i reckon Solidify
Spotify..... oops, I mean Solidify
Obviously this one- a huge time saver
I dont know why so many tutorials make this harder than it should ,you made it so easy to understand thank you.
I'm just learning Blender and I was trying to use the mirror modifier last night with mixed success. This morning I saw your video (already a subscriber 🙂) and now I understand it so much better! Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Hi Justin, thanks for taking the time to make so many modifiers clearer. It's nice that you take your experience and share it with us.
Thumbs up for giving us enough to get us going, enabling us to experiment further and use different modifiers to look at modeling projects differently . It motivates me to try more.
Great stuff.
Thank you for this tutorial. It cleared up a couple of mysteries for me about the mirror modifier. I feel that it helped polish up my mirror modifier use. All puns intended.
Brilliant video. All the info was so easy to understand (as all your videos). Thank you
you describe blender simply and very much understandable way while some peoples are dancing with blender.
Trying my best to make it accessible :)
your videos are amazing ,,, you know how to explain everything nice and clear, subscribed!
Wow. 2:20 minutes in and my problem is solved, just like that! This is hands down my favorite Blender channel
I think you are the only youtuber that deals with the origin point... and its so important. In Maya its just another modeling tool.
Thank you very much, you explain everything so well and clear
Notion packed video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
you're so incredibly helpful, thank you!
Glad I could help!
Life saver!!! tysm!!!
You are awesome! thank you for the tutorials!
Glad you like them!
Thank you!!
Great tutorial. Would love to see more tutorials on modifiers!
Boolean and Mirror are the best.
Didn't know how to move the origin like that. cheers
That one blew my mind when I figured it out - way easier way to move the origin around for sure! :)
You saved me my day thx
This is such a clear, helpful introduction: thank you very much for making it! With greetings from Cape Town!
You're very welcome!
THANX FOR THIS VIDEO SIR
Hey! Great video. I am having trouble because I have a character model that is using mirror mod. And they have on one specific feature that's Asymmetrical. I modeled it separately and wanna join them but when I do I just mirrors the added object. Any help ?
Thank you
How would you apply this modifier independly to two items? I have car headlamps that can be mirrored AND a set of wheels that can also be mirrored. Both items are affected by the same modifier.
thank you
Greetings. I have a place, with particles attached to it... how can I make, that , when I mirror the plane, the particless to get mirroed too ? Because now, when I mirror the place, the aprticles switch from the initial plane, to the mirrored one. Many thanks
Great instructions ...
Glad you liked it!
How can we mirror some object across some specific plane, for example make the cube mirrored based on its own one surface plane?
thanks
tysm
how do I use it after making segments?
ctrl r + ?
pls tell me
amazing video ill sub right now
Thanks!
Great video! How do you alter just one side of a mirrored object? I can't seem to separate them.
Well you could apply the modifier then edit the geometry, but you'd lose future mirror functions
Hey im having a problem where when I use the mirror modifier one half of it is a different shade of the color and I don't know how to fix it
can you explain mirror/inset/boundary to me I've tried Everything
how do i make the 2nd arm stick to me base when i moddeled an arm using a mirror and want it to attach itself correctly to the basebody without mirrorig the whole body ? :D How do do this correctly? :D
exelent
Is it possible to seperate a mirrored object?
I have a character and on both sides it has an object attached to it that is obviously the same because of the mirror mod.
I seperated both object from the character but now if I adjust one object it makes changes to the other object as well and I don't want that.
Is there a way to seperate them? If I click P and seperate by selection it doesn't work.
I would love the see the fdd modifire from 3ds Max in Blender!!! the lattice modifire needs way to much time to set up. And greate video once again, keep going :D
Thank you!
what if you close the mirror modifier does the mirrored object disappear or not?
Hi im trying to flip an object around, a human ear i made into looking like Mr Spock's ear. I followed you directions but the ear isnt fliping aorund the way it should. could you help me at all online?
This is a nice tutorial. I do have a question though. If you were to use the mirror modifier when character modelling and animation, is it possible to merge the modifier? Is it also possible to do that before UVW wrapping and texturing?
Well you'd basically just apply the modifier
@@TheCGEssentials I had applied the mirror modifier beforehand, but thank you for your reply though.
This was exactly what I was looking for. I just started using Blender followed a few tutorials and learned some, but the mirror with the EMPTY works great! Do you have to leave that add on as I want to add another mesh in between. Thanks!
I don't understand the question - what add-on?
@@TheCGEssentials I was able to figure out what I was trying to do. Thank you for replying so quickly. I'm enjoying your tutorials you have another subscriber.
how do you mirror if your object isn't facing on any axis?? I have my transform orientation set to Normal but it still tries to mirror on one of the Axis
can we separate the object from mirror modifier ?
I added the mirror modifier and it did nothing... Nothings been duplicated. Can you explain that or is it just a glitch?
Still having trouble on the mirroring part i just seem to not get it the way i want it it does not create a 2nd cube
I tried using the mirror modifier in ver. 2.8 and 3.1 with no success. I've followed your video step by step yet I can't mirror an object. What can I be doing wrong?
My vote for the craziest add-on has to be boolean. I use it a ton but mirror is definitely a strong candidate!
Ooh - that is a good one - lots of fun applications :)
What about mirroring a specific part of a single model?
Well the modifier applied to the objects themselves, so generally you're going to mirror any geometry contained in the objects you apply it to
One suggestion, what you could do as a tutorial is bridge the gap between Sketchup and Blender, meaning to try and replicate a workflow from Sketchup to Blender, for an example similar component workflow from Sketchup that is doable in Blender.
I've tried to follow everything you have done, same settings that I can see and I'm getting nothing like what I'm seeing here :(.
Confusing at 2:55 , z axis is up and down, it is selected but it mirrors along y axis
This lost me too. I was fine up to this point, but I'm not sure how the axes are being applied if the dogs are spaced along the Y axis but that's considered mirroring along the Z axis?
"more dogs ! more dogs !" - The Simpsons.
i like to use bevel it is very handy and ofcourse mirror too
NICE - Bevel is great too - also saves a ton of time
I think my mirror modifier is broken, I select to mirror it on the x axis or whatever and it does nothing.
I can’t find a up to date video for this, they changed it so now this doesn’t work
I don't think they did...
nice nice nice.....................................................!
Dude i'm freaking going insane, why can't I mirror an object? I click the object, add mirror modifier, click x or y or z and nothing. It's driving me freaking nuts. Why does nothing ever work?
I Have the same problem
lol why my cube , i click mirror but the cube is not mirrored why ._.
have you figured out?? im going insane
@@FatalBagel click cube -mirror and press "g" (grab) then press "x" or "y" or "z" to separate.
@@yeshacroe9354 I mean… when I click mirror by x or y or z axis the mirrored object doesn’t even show up like in the video. It doesn’t show up right away or after I hit apply, just nothing :/
@@FatalBagel ah dont hit apply at first. Ah goes like this..
1.click cube - click edit mode
2.ctrl + r (cut the cube in half)
3. Select the 4 faces in left side - dissolve faces
4.after removing or cutting the cube in half -go to modifier mirror press 'y' or 'x' and it should reflect.
Only hit apply when ur done with manipulating ur object to what you want.
Also you can manipulate the object the mirrored objects location if u want it far away from each other or stick it together. Select the object's faces and press "G" and press x or z or y to make it accurate.
@@yeshacroe9354 I’m mirroring an entire object and not just part of it (it doesn’t intersect with any axes) but thanks regardless!
thank you
your insta or artstation account please?
Not really active on those platforms - I'm mostly a RUclipsr
@@TheCGEssentials thank you anyway for what you do
the intro scared me...
Lol - maybe turn that volume down ;p
thanks mark zuckerberg
Hi, your tutorials are very good but the way you talk is extremely strange. As a not native english speaker I really can't follow and understand what you say... I get it, having this "speaker style" if you do music radio might be cool, but probably for beginners' tutorials you should have a more clear way of talking.
Or...this is just the way I talk...
@@TheCGEssentials surly, didn't mean to insult you, but I just thought I should let you know, because I'm sure there are many non native english speakers they follow you. please, accept my appologies.
dude ,how on erath i make an figure with mirror modifier ?? like in sculpting mode ..it makes symetrical but but there is a grid showing original and other stuf , in sculpting mode is easy ,but not in edit mode(
