  • This tiny cabin was self-built on a budget using mostly secondhand and reclaimed materials. Luke has lived in his cabin for the past 5 years, and his partner Meg moved in about 1.5 years after it was built. The cabin itself is a little over 200 square feet and is very simply furnished with a kitchen, a bed, a wood stove, and a couple of stools. They also have small outbuildings including an outhouse, a pumphouse for their laundry machines and freezer, an outdoor shower, and a studio space for making music and housing guests.

Luke originally built the tiny cabin as a way to get away from city life so that he could have a quiet and affordable place to focus on making music. The cabin is built on 2.5 acres of shared land that is owned by a friend, and it's located on unceded Coast Salish Territory.
With Meg being a nutritionist, growing fresh food was a natural interest and so having the space to garden was a big factor in her decision to move from the city to a rural property. Having a low-cost housing situation has also given her the financial freedom to spend time building her nutrition business.

This is a great story. Lest anyone think this is a "young adult only" alternative, let me say my husband is 75yrs old, my mother is 83 yrs old, and l am 65yrs old. We bought 6acs in the Ozarks and are completely off gird. No running water, we use rain catchment, composting toilet, putting in solar, and use wood heat. It is a WONDERFUL way to live.

If youtube had been around when I was their age, I would have been drawn to their lifestyle. Not necessarily what they do to make a living, but living free of mortgages and high rents. I think slowly but surely a movement is growing among young people to do just that as they see the ever escalating prices of either buying or renting leaving them with very little disposable income to enjoy the things in life which make life worth living. My generation grew up wanting every convenience that came down the pike and striving to getting bigger and better and that was a never ending pursuit and life was passing us by. Everyone needs a place to call home and that shouldn't cost an arm or a leg during the best part of their lives and looking to retirement so they can finally enjoy life. I encourage young people to shun the rat race and make life worth living while you are living. Go get em.

The house is absolutely charming, and I think it's the rawness of the build that is part of its charm. It doesn't have a finished look but it's clean and I can see the care put into it. I love that phrase "living lightly" and I admire people who have the courage and conviction to do it.

Everyone's version of an ideal life/living situation is different and so much of the time people get wrapped up in the popular narrative of wanting 'more' and 'bigger=better' so it's super important to go inward and ask yourself 'What is my ideal living situation?' and work towards that.

Lovely couple. Cute house. I am just concerned about all the unpainted wood on the exterior, as plywood disintegrates fast when exposed to moisture. It might have a coat of polyurethane i can't see, but that needs to be reapplied every other year. Painting the wood lasts much, much longer. There's environmentally safer paint with low or no VOCs. Go with a brown color if you want the feel/look of natural wood. And lastly, Satin or Semigloss sheen on wood lasts FAR longer and repels water much better than Flat sheen, which is typical on houses. Good luck!

I was noticing that. I think that, being people with a good sense of aesthetics and love of natural materials, it will not be long before they find or make some natural old-style long shingles and cover all the plywood with them.

I enjoyed hearing their story and loved hearing Luke sing. This is a great lifestyle and it is achievable for anyone who is able-bodied. However, if you are physically disabled and you suffer from chronic pain then the most you can hope for is low income housing. Of course you have to be able to keep up with state inspections as well as quarterly pest control and let's not forget the quarterly owners inspections too. At my age (64) I have had enough of this lifestyle for the past 11 years. Now I think I will probably live in my jeep and low income housing can go screw itself. As you age out your body changes and you can only tolerate what you are able to bear. Pain is not easy to tolerate when you get older. Fewer responsibilities are better.

I'm thinking of moving to Mexico. To the Southern part of Mexico city, and build a cabin for my wife and I. You guys are awesome and inspiration to me. Thank you and keep up the good work 👍

Savaged materials, natural cabin…economical, functional and close to nature living. Great to have a separate quarter/studio. Possibly closer restroom? Love Luke’s music and environmental activism. Thanks for sharing their inspirational story.

Could easily have a portable indoor toilet for nighttime use and inclement weather.

Hi from India!! Lovely home.. @11.53 noticed the use of stone grinder.. being from the south of India, we use this a lot for grinding lentil batters. I am curious to know what she uses it for!

I really liked the rustic, unfinished look of everything and the setting is lovely. I found the noise distracting, is that traffic noise? Lots of good ideas regarding space usage. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know man...looks bit weird. That kind of wood stove (small) and the insulation of the house... and the bed seems too short...how they sleep in that short bed?

I wouldn't mind doing this, problem is there's so many rules about building on land it makes it pretty hard to figure out what you can and can't do. It's pretty stupid. They just want you to spend $300k and pay off your home for the rest of your life.

Move to a state that has less population. They tend to have more relaxed rules, and more conservative people

@@lordeverybody872 yeah Florida sucks in general. We may end up doing that but I just hate to leave all my family behind.

@@lordeverybody872 I want more independence but not at the expense of living next to a bunch of xenophobes. My friend and her friends went off-grid a couple of years ago only to find out that half of her neighbors were more than willing to give them the cold shoulder because two of them are gay. Rural people tend to be nice under the assumption that you hold most of the same values, that's my experience.

@@anentiresleeveoforeos2087 That’s very true. As a brown person, I have gotten the looks a lot when traveling to rural areas.

YES! I was seriously considering reconfiguring a shuttle into 4 seasons and just living at friggin Wal Mart. (Not kidding) because when my situation ends, I won't be able to afford living I'm the building I've lived in 43 years!
A shuttle would be doable and livable.
