- Jake & Kiva started building their 20-foot long tiny house in 2014 and they've been living in it full-time with their cat and dog for 4 years now! They came up with some brilliant solutions and designs to maximize the small space and make it as functional as possible, including a transforming home office, hidden charging stations, central vac, a space-saving table, paw-wiping cat stairs, a computer-programmed LED lighting system, a swinging towel rack, 3D printed hardware, and a ton more! Step into the Tiny Nest with us to meet the clever couple and learn about their DIY home that cost just $36K CAD to build!

They also have some amazing resources on their website, including a SketchUp tutorial, info about the trailer they used, and a lot more:

When you first walk into the house, there's a 2-level coat closet and a functional storage area for things you need when coming in and out of the house (keys, dog towels, water bottles, etc.). The kitchen itself has loads of counter space, it has an induction cooktop and a toaster oven, stacked bar fridges (one of which is actually a freezer!), food storage below the counter, and open shelving for dishes above.
The bathroom creates a hallway with the shower on the left, and a toilet and sink on the right.
The living room has a large l-shaped sectional sofa for lounging, and a transforming home office and entertainment system for gaming and watching movies. There's loads of storage space under the couch and in the full length shelving unit.
The sliding ladder is tucked away behind the fridge but it can be pulled out and extended to access the king-sized loft that has a massive bed, a closet, shelving, and a cat house!
The Tiny Nest is designed to be on the grid for electricity, there's propane for heat and hot water, a well for water, and a self-built composting toilet.
Living in a self-built house has allowed Jake and Kiva to quit their jobs and start their own tiny house business, as well as working odd jobs on their own terms, like contract electrical work and horse care. We're so glad we had the chance to meet them and tour their home, and we hope you'll follow along on their adventures!

those cat stairs and them leading into her own little sleeping cubby are the best!
I LOVED how she ran up the stairs right on cue to show them off!
Yes. A shame it's an outdoor cat #birdkiller
I love it 😻
@@fionasmom6254 and meowed!
Yahweh created cats to EAT BIRDS 🐦 i, however, did my best to keep mine from eating birds that had a smaller population, & most songbirds. i did not praise them for eating a bird, nor were they allowed in the house w 1
This house is full of cleverness. He says he didn't have prior building experience, but he talks like an engineer. Brilliant.
It’s seems to be a requirement engineers don’t have building experience.
But he is an electrician, so he has some knowledge of how things work.
This guy has a career designing tiny homes if he wants it.
Nerdy kids, hang in there, you are the cool people among adults, you win in the end!
Absolutely! I love how it works for them and their pets. I love that they’re Canadian, being one myself. If I ever decide I want a tiny house I would consult him first.
Adults don't have to be nerds to be cool just relax and vibe and you'll be cool :)
@@snowypaw101 Of course they don't! My note was aimed at the kids who are now...
@@leslie6938 Ah icic okay! :)
@@snowypaw101 😅
The towel rack in the shower was brilliant idea
I love all the clever solutions for the towels, shower faucet location, ladder, table, and cat stairs.
Very creative with that
I absolutely loved those designs, too!!!

Thank you so much for coming by to check out our place! This video is SO well done and you even make the music? Wow, very impressed with the editing and camera work too. You even somehow managed to make us look less dorky than we actually are XD
If you don't mind me asking, which other channel was your tiny house featured on? I love everything about it! Could've sworn I'd seen it before though 🤔
Forgot to mention that it wasn't from your channel.
I remember it got a bit more into the desk setup, the ergonomics, using the PC mouse on both hands, etc
I've been trying to find it, but had no luck so far. Would be appreciated if you could help. Thanks.
Your home is beautiful, I too love the position of your kitchen sink 💛
It's beautiful you both enjoy each other.
❣️
I really like the separation of the shower and the toilet & sink. Honestly you don’t spend much time in the bathroom so there is no need for a full bathroom. Love the towel rack for the bathroom.
Him lifting his leg to get wiped 😩❤️ and talk about having your priorities right with the kitty’s stairs!
This is a masterclass in design thinking.
1. Prototype the kitchen before actually building.
2. Move in before completion to have a better idea of the needs.
I am certain this is very close to perfection for them.
That is the best 20 foot tiny house I"ve ever seen. Looks bigger than some 26 feet ones and I like splitting the bathroom into a hallway, that way guest can sleep downstairs and all can use the bathroom.
Wow. So much thought and engineering went into this tiny space. Absolutely brilliant! I appreciate how you share what you would change now given your experiences and share what you learned.
the towel rack system is genius. and the cat stairs! !
It's hard to know where to start! What an amazing couple. They should give lessons on how to be better humans. There are so many cool facets of this home. I love the organization and functionality. The cat stairs are the bomb. I love the little cave the dog crawled into under the couch. The investment in time yielded incredible results. Thank you for sharing!
My goodness, this build is just brilliant!!!
For me, it would be too small BUT it is definitely wonderfully designed! Great 👍 job!!!
This is one of the best tiny house I've seen so far, I love how you thought about your pets, little cat stair here, fitting dog bed there. You're some great folk. Thanks for the tour
you had me at kitty cat stairs!... people that do that for their critters - you just KNOW they're good people!
This house is extremely well engineered and thought out. Usually I can think of something I would change in these videos but I love this
Hello lisa how are you doing!!
Looks simple but yet it's a smart tiny house...
Love, love, love the kitchen set up and counter space with the corner sink. I definitely have kitchen counter envy, LOL!
We do too! We definitely haven’t seen very many designs like that with the sink in the corner and the window on each side, it looks great! Thanks for checking out the video ❤️😁
Wow, these two thought of everything! Very clever, custom design. That shower towel rack set up is amazing and I love how they've accommodated their two animal family members. Inspiring result!
Love the sink on an angle and the 2 windows in the kitchen for lots of light
Very well designed to their needs! Sure helps to have an electrician/computer geek working on it. Nicely done!
Living in mom and dad’s back yard is great. Your so lucky you guys can play video games. Pure bliss. I can’t wait till I’m older to do this. I’m only 14 and your living my dream.
You seem pretty smart yourself kiddo! You're already checking out housing venues! Way to go - keep it up!
How could you not love people who build a house and incorporate stuff for their animals? Omg ❤️
One of the best tiny house builds with this size ever!
Yay! People who are smart enough and compassionate enough to know that CATS SHOULD NEVER BE KEPT INDOORS ONLY! Love the cat stairs!
I am in awe of the towel rack.
Genius 😊
I think it's an understatement to say that your place is amazing.
i love the separate shower and toilet. i wouldn't change a thing!
Love all the nooks and spaces utilized. Well thought out uses of space particularly the "closet" at the entry, kitty stairs, kitchen design and the electronic components. Well done!
@13.50 is MY FAVORITE PART OF THIS VIDEO: Kitty's😺 outside, hears them talking about her and she pops up at the window as if to say: "Heeey! If you're gonna talk about me & my cat box I WANNA BE A PART OF THIS CONVERSATION!"
😸😊
Ha! When Jake and Kiva said someone would be featuring their Tiny House this was my top guess. I followed their build from the start several years ago - well worth watching!
Good guess! We're super happy we got to meet them and check out the amazing work they did! Thanks for watching :)
love the ingenuity of this couple's build
One of my favs! The kitchen setup, cat stairs and the way they fit everything perfectly. That guy is super smart!
Honestly, one of the best builds I've ever seen. Amazing!
These two are the best
Agree with the “best 20 ft tiny” comment. You could make BIG BUCKS selling those custom tables it’s gorgeous and not just for owners of tiny homes. Very impressive.
I just love the cat welcoming us to your tiny home😍
Cat stairs! Fantastic. And the dog looked so happy 😀
What talent! Beautiful home!
Liked the 👍 button the moment he mentioned surround sound…. That’s an amazing , well thought out tiny house 🏠…
This man/couple were meant to build! He REALLY planned and thought everything out , in addition to very clever personal touches… I mean WOW❤️❤️
Finally, a tiny house with good tech!
THEY'RE SO ORGANIZED IN THEIR BEAUTIFUL HOME I LOVE IT ! 😏
Love the kitchen, the cat stairs, and the table. The table would be useful in any size house.
I love the idea of dorm-sized fridge and freezer stacked. I think I’ll do that when my fridge needs to be replaced.
She is a beauty, I love the angled sink and the colors ✨
I love the gaming room, especially the desk, have you built it by yourself? I like how you were thinking by designing about your animals - it is really sweet 👏❤️
Dividing the bathroom into a shower area separate from the toilet/sink room is ideal to me in that two people can use the bathroom at the same time with privacy for each. LOVE the mobile towel & rug rack, great idea! There were many very creative & thoughtful things the owners did with this build, the cat stairway not being the least of those ideas! Bravo to you both for a job very well done 👍.
So good to see this adorable couple again! I was watching them way back in their first years. Haven’t seen them since the Colorado tiny house convention. Great job on this tiny! They’ve made more of every single application and corner of space than any other build I’ve seen. Thx for the video!
Hello Kimberly how are you doing!!
Total genius.
Absolutely amazing 👏👏👏👍👍👍
Ps. So LOVE that you have a dog 🐕 and a cat 🐈 ❤️🦋🦋🦋
That dog is such a CUTIE!
Love the ladder idea!
A true "Tiny Home" that actually aimed at 'going Tiny' instead of 'going a little bigger and bigger here or there' like most of the Tiny Houses I've seen. Great job! Thanks for sharing your lovely space!
Wow ! Design and tiny function! Very very unique and well done !
cat stair is so cute. love this tiny house.
Absolutely adore kitty stares and detail that went into it. The thought that went into every part of the house is amazing.
We really like the kitchen and the way they separated at the bathroom❤
Hello Cathy your smile is priceless😊
The towel rack in the shower is the most brilliant idea that I have seen on tiny houses so far ! 👍
Hello Jake-&-Kiva. You realy used your space very wisely. Thank You for sharing it with all of US!
Been following tiny nest for years, great to see them on here! Jake's precision is incredible and really comes through!
I just gasped @ the genius of your shower set up, esp the way to hang and keep towels dry. Awesome!!
I've been following Tiny Nest for years now, glad to see they finally finished the house. I'm not crazy about the layout of their house, but I learned a lot from their videos.
Hahaha the little meowww when the cat goes down was a cute video edit
I *love* this build!
Deeply impressed!
This guy is clever AF!
Beautiful countertop, and love the Mexican tilework!
Very clever features.
Wow! This home really showcases your skill, talent, & perseverance. Your well thought out plans really make your home useful friendly & beautiful!! I’m sure you must have outdoor dining & entertaining space for when the weather’s nice. How lucky to live in such a beautiful & open space!! Enjoyed your entire video!!! Even though, I could never live in such a tiny space, I appreciate the beauty & function of them!!! Great tips for anyone considering such a build👍🏼🤗👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Your house is so cosy and perfect as it is. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
Seems the vast majority of Tiny Homes have the same roof line as yours but I can't understand why anyone would not have both sides of the roof equal? How much more head room that would give! If I am ever Blessed enough to have my own Tiny House I will absolutely have a gabled barn style roof put on and enjoy the extra inside space and beauty of it from outside.😄
You are both so terribly clever. For two so young you have done brilliantly! Well done you two!
Just Amazing😄!
Brook👩🌾🍏🍎 and
Opy🐕💖😃
I definitely love your tiny house build as a gamer geek!
I remember following Jake and Kiva a while ago, and seeing features like the cat stairs, but don't remember all the lounge features which I really love!
Wow!!! Your home is gorgeous!!!👠🚌👠
You guys absolutely smashed it out of the park! Home run guys. Nice work 🐇
Wow! I've watched so many tiny home videos but the brilliant solutions and fine details like the rotating towel rack, the perfect ladder for storage, safety and functionality, the dining table, 2nd computer desk and art piece! Just wow! Way to go! As a fellow Ontarian I hope you 2 have a great life in your tiny home and beyond!
That bathroom swing arm for the towels is realy genius👏🏿
Wow! You have done an amazing job with this tiny house. Awesome cost and well thought out for you to live in it. I noticed that your house looked like other buildings on the land and liked that too! Well done!
Hello Susan how are you doing!!
Jake,
As a retired electrician that also wrote code for production motor controls, I applaud your house controls setup.
I also think your kitchen counter top is beautiful. I have been thinking about replacing the kitchen counter top in my house with a wood of some kind. I like your idea of the lamination process. That would allow it to be a one piece design sense there is a corner to deal with. Kiva I am sure you have had a large input on the inside as well. If I were designing one the change I would make is put my sleeping quarters on the first level. At my age of 74 yo it is not easy climbing steps or a ladder.
Keep up the good work.
One of the best designed tiny houses i've seen so far.
That swiveling towel bar, the stairs on the two brackets and the cat stairs are ingenious. Oh! And 'central vac'! But the exterior....really needs a colour that pops because it is so plain.
OH NO , please don't change your bathroom id3a and seperate kitchen/lounge !!!! They andcthe cat stairs are the greatest features, oh along with the clever idea of of your fridge freezer , that sets your home apart from others !!! It's a 10/10 for me in design and liveability. I personally couldn't use a ladder but your planning of it and your loft... everything is meticulous and so spot on 👏👏👏👏👏👏 it would not be possible to be unhappy with your lively home. Oh!! Also I love the separated lounge room for a visitor staying over night. So many positives ..... CONGRATS it is so well done !!!!! I hope you'll be incredibly happy living there 🤗👏👏👏🤗🇦🇺
cool solution with the towells and nice corner lamp in the toilet :)
nerds for life!! sick house. i need one.
Brilliant ladder design. Thank you for sharing.
Towel rack and loft ladder? 2 fantastic ideas! Bravo!
Genius...genuus...genius!!!!! Wow! The thought, planning, designing, and executing to perfection that went into your home is exceptional.
Love the shower and the details involved!
Very clever layout
Any house with an entry closet / foyer has my respect.
Wow! This is one of the most thought out tiny house I've ever seen!!! I love the towel holder in the shower - genius!!!
I love the house and their chanel, the Tiny Nest has endless information about building tiny houses! Go give them a follow
Nice! to see a couple doing things their own way. Has lead to more innovation
Such cute ideas for kitty and such a cute kitty. I love how the dog raises its paw for cleaning.
Brilliantly utilized space. Tiny home envy is real!!
Brilliant design! I think this is the only tiny house I've seen with a computer setup.
Ummmm the things you designed in this home are just genius. If you ever want to change careers I think designing tiny homes or any home for that matter would Be a fabulous choice. It amazes me. The shower towel rack, the dining table and all the measurements to be comfortable, and the kitchen counters and the placement of the fridges. The design of the bathroom(s) is just great. You rock on with this and your life will be so fantastic. Oh and your lounge area and all the components to be able to play watch TV and work are great. You thought of everything
If I was young!!! oh gosh, how I love this!
