How to create an AI narrated audiobook with Google Play | Google Play Auto Narrated Audiobook 2022

- You may have already heard the big news, but Google Play is now allowing us to create audiobooks with their auto narration AI. How cool is this?
So a few things, to do this your eBooks already need to be available for sale on the Google Play platform - either directly through Google Play or via PublishDrive.
Two, you CAN take your finished audiobook files to sell the audiobook off of the Google Play platform. But the major audiobook aggregators like Findaway Voices and ACX don’t accept AI narrated files at this time. So, keep that in mind. You can sell the audiobook on Google Play and your direct sales channels, and that's kind of it right now.
When the news came out I was so excited. But only 1 of my books didn’t have an audiobook. Architects is book #2 in the Project Collusion series and the main character's POV is male, hence I didn’t narrate it myself. I figured at the moment I was getting $0 for the audiobook that didn’t exist, so making one with the AI couldn’t hurt and if I didn’t like how it sounded then I could pull it.
So without delay, here is how you create an audiobook on Google Play using their auto narrate feature. Here is what you will need:
-eBook available on Google Play
-new audiobook ISBN
-audiobook cover art
Payments - 52% royalty - that’s looowww. But again, not getting anything off it otherwise.
I like the idea of having this version ready to launch as soon as my book is out and then maybe I can take the pressure off of narrating it myself or finding the perfect narrator. It’s also cool to have my technothriller voice by AI, adds to the spookiness of a world controlled by an evil tech company… I’ve said too much.
Have you given this feature a try yet? I think AI narration has a long way to go, but Architects sound pretty good. Check it out and let me know what you think.

My wife and I just finished our first audio book using Google. The process was very straightforward and the voices are for the most part well done. Our works are fiction so we've had to do a bit of word tweaking to get the proper accents and / or intonation but it's a great price and will get us out there. Deep Zen looks much more refined but alas the cost. Thanks for the video on the product and the procedures.
Congratulations on getting your audiobook out there. Glad I could help!
Having watched your video quite a few times I believe that it is extremely useful because it highlights some of the issues that I encountered. The issues are not major but the fact that you have talked us through them will certainly help a lot of self-published authors. I have now created three audiobooks using Google Play. Thanks.
Thank you for such a kind review! Congratulations on your audiobooks!
So interesting thanks for the step by step instructions 🙏
You're welcome
Thanks so much! Readying a first test run (via standalone short story) on GPB for audiobook from the ebook, and this was very helpful in the how-to department. Best wishes ongoing on your authorship career --- really to all of us who write books.
Indie writing is my retirement creative activity after analytical careers writing for academic journals ---snore? --- and presentations to tribunals. Writing from the heart with what we want to say satisfies the soul. And the community online of writers, gratifying and supportive. Yes!
So glad I could help!
Used this for my last sci fi novel and it blows my mind. It WILL disrupt the audio industry. It is incredible you could produce an audiobook in the matter of 2 hours which previously could take months and cost $10k.
It is creepy how this tech could be devastating like a 'nuclear explosion' for the middle class worker in the audio industry where Google could eradict millions of jobs overnight. But awesome for the authors
I think the quality narrators will still be around and able to charge more. there is certainly more demand for narration than can be supplied. I'm sure the two will coexist when the dust settles
Alex I have done pretty the same thing. but seems like most the platforms would NOT accept AI voiced audiobooks??
@@littlecaesar1842 This is true for Amazon but here in Sweden (which is the futuristic most innovative country in audio AI audiobooks is accepted on Swedish audiobook platforms) and Sweden will probably be the leader in AI audiobooks like they were with Spotify and legal music streaming
You help me so much. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
GPT can recommend a range of prices for Ai narrated audiobooks.
Thank you for doing this. I saved your vid and will come back to it. 😁
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for this! Just made an audiobook using Murf studio. Are there any platforms accepting text to speech narrated audiobooks? Keep up the great work!
Currently I don't believe any are accepting text to speech narrated AI. I believe a select few will accept from DeepZen. Best of luck!
Reading is beautiful.
Make sure to save after each adjustment or change. If you upload a revised text, WAIT, or else you will still see the earlier version.
Great tip! Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you for all of this!
Once an audiobook is created via Google - is there anything proprietary keeping the audiobook from being used other places? Like putting it on RUclips or an author’s own website? Is the audio file “portable” in that way?
Yes, so long as you still have the audiobook for sale on google play you can sell it or post it elsewhere.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Unfortunately, I can't even get past the 'Add a book' screen. Ebook language not supported? It's just an ePub I'm not sure what they're referring to.
Hmm I've not heard of that error before. Have you contacted support? Or have you logged out and left it for a bit, then maybe trying it again.
Very useful. Thanks. I have recently created two audiobooks using Google Play. The first was a monologue diary and I thought that it worked very well indeed. The second was a book of fiction with dialogue and I still thought that it worked very well but would like to make some minor adjustments to the 'live' audiobook. Do you know if it is possible to do so without causing major problems?
I'm not sure as I've not gone in to make any changes to the Google Auto Narration yet. My guess is the current version would be live until you approved the updated edition.
@@1MKWilliams Thanks very much for your speedy response. I will certainly investigate further.
Also you need an epub download it won't work for pdf files. Believe me I tried. Good video. Very informative.
If your book has changing point of view can you select which voice is used for which chapter?
No it does not appear that you can currently change the character voice for different pov
This will serve me well. They say good for nonfiction, but what about poetry? I would like to try it to see if it works for one of my books. Thanks love your video. Very helpful. I would like to purchase Architects to listen to the AI voice and to get your book. I am intrigued by the storyline. Thanks.
Hi Michael, you could absolutely try it for poetry, but I get a feeling most people who enjoy poetry would like to hear the authors voice reading their poems. Still, worth a try. Thank you checking out Architects. Have a great day!
MK, did getting out the AI version of Architects take less time than recording/publishing one of your books in your own voice?
I guess I’m asking whether readers would prefer to hear the author’s voice, and the AI version of a non-fiction book is a placeholder while you iron out the launch of the other editions of the book.
Yes, WAAYYY less time to produce. I may also use this as my final read-aloud as well. I notice when I do my read out loud step that my brain will correct common typos (that instead of the) and then I still miss it. The AI narration doesn't miss a typo and then I can hear that it is wrong and correct before publication.
I think my go-to strategy moving forward will be to have the AI-version ready on launch and then I can give myself a break and get the version recorded by me done on my own time and not rush it or stress myself out unnecessarily.
I have a dialogue heavy fiction novel coming out. Should I hold off on using AI narration?
Hmmm, a more powerful AI like deep zen might sound best, but it is more expensive and not all the platforms will accept it. I would not suggest the Google Play AI right now since the voice cannot be changed and it is less advanced. Best of luck!
So do I keep World or select other countries? Explain that more in a video or reply. Thanks
My advice is to keep it as world
I was excited when I saw this. However, my books are too long and I don't think I can stand to go through either of them yet again. I feel like I already know both novels word for word from start to finish. 😭
I understand! That's a sign that you did enough editing on them :)
My current book is published as ebook. It says I need epub? What do I do
Where is the ebook currently published? You may be able to download it as a epub file depending on the platform. If not, I recommend working with formatted books to convert it for you: formattedbooks.com/?ref=31
Do you have any video on "How to sell Audiobooks on your direct sales channel?" If so, I would be interested in how you do that, what software you use etc etc
I do! Here it is : ruclips.net/video/0MKkSPs6Y8M/видео.html
Is there a possibility of adding background music to telepathic dialogue?
Not with the A.I. narration, only if you were producing it
Ms. Williams, is it possible for me to just upload my already made file (AI gen) onto their platform instead using their ai tools?
No, at this time Google Play only allows you to use their proprietary auto narration.
@@1MKWilliams got it! thanks!
Shouldn't the uploaded kpf file include the cover?
KPF is a file type only used by Kindle Direct Publishing. For Google Play you need to bring an ePub file. Yes, the cover file is included in the ePub but they ask for the cover file separately as well.
Has anyone put their google ai-narrated audiobook on RUclips? I just finished making mine. I was hoping to upload it to RUclips but the files they give you are in plf. So far, I am stuck finding how to convert this file to mp3 so I can import to Capcut to make it into a video before I can upload to RUclips. Does anyone have any tips? 🙏
Yes, I did this: ruclips.net/video/OVekaVgCDYE/видео.html You have the option to download it as an MP3
Wish I would’ve watched before I created my ai audiobook.
Oh no! I believe you can modify and edit the files as needed with Google Play.
@@1MKWilliams lol, I’m editing now
I want to do my book in Spanish. Do I need to have it written in Spanish first? Or does Google Play have a Spanish narrator voice that will translate the book into Spanish?
You'll need to have it translated first to ensure the translation is accurate
@@1MKWilliams They deactivated my book because it was a crime/thriller. Thanks for all the replies anyway. You do such a good job with your videos. Thanks again!
Can you use a different AI software and upload files to google play?
At this time no, you either go direct with Google Play via their autonarrated software or you have to use Findaway Voices to upload a human narrated audiobook.
A lot of people are talking about this! I've been thinking about doing it with my books, but then you said the eBook has to be on Google play? So this can't be done with those who are exclusive with Amazon's KU program? I wonder if there is a way to upload the eBook without having it released to the public so that the audiobook can be made.
While listening to you, I went and checked it out. It seems like I can't make the audiobook without my eBook being in Google play. That's a bummer. I wonder how this works for those authors who are wide, who then switch to KU? Would pulling out their eBook automatically take out their AI audiobook? Hmmm, so many questions. Thanks so much for the video!
Okay, just checked on the idea of having the eBook on Google, without it being published, but the book has to be "live" on Google play.
Hi S.D., Yes, authors in KU can't use this option since they can't sell their eBook on Google Play. I am fairly sure that if I pulled my eBook of Architects from Google Play it would automatically unpublish the AI Narrated Audiobook since the two are linked in the system.
Yup, that’s how it is. Google is not a charity.
Is it only exclusive in google books play?
Yes, the AI books created on Google Play can only be sold via Google play or directly. They just announced last week that they are testing distribution via Findaway Voices. The Apple Books AI audiobooks are also set to that platform specifically. Same for the KDP AI audiobook beta.
I uploaded the audiobook on Find Away but no message came from that book, tell me what should I do.
You cannot upload AI generated books and distribute them to Findaway Voices at this time.
@@1MKWilliams Thanks so much for the video: Do you know, is there any other site other than payhip that allows auto narrated books to be sold?
What if your ebook is on Kindle Publishing? Can you still do this?
Hi Jeremiah, If your eBook is not exclusive to KDP (not in Kindle Select), then you can also publish it on the Google Play platform and create the Autonarrated audiobook. Best of luck!
If you already have an audiobook that's exclusive to Audible, Amazon, and Apple, could you do an auto-narrated version of the same book and just sell it on Google Play?
No, once the title is exclusive to ACX you can't publish it elsewhere, even if it is a different recording. I would suggest writing to ACX if you are outside of the 1 year mark to ask for the book to be non-exclusive.
I am trying to figure out if I can download the AI generated audio book and sell it on my website directly or something similar? Is that true?
Yes, once the audiobook is created you can download it to sell direct. So long as the audiobook is still for sale on Google Play you can sell it direct. Best of luck!
@@1MKWilliams I had only published on Amazon KDP, so I recently published a nonfiction book on Google Play Store. It was finally approved and is live today (took a week), but I am noticing that the choice to create an audiobook is not showing up in the Google Play Book Edit on the left column when I follow the same path you went down. Do you think that is because it is brand new, or maybe it was only uploaded as a PDF and not an ePub format? Or maybe there is another issue.
@@DanielGudema Hi Daniel, my initial guess is timing. If it is only just now available it may take a day or so. If you don't see the option in a week I would suggest reaching out to Google Play for support. The auto-narration is a new feature so I'm sure they are troubleshooting as much as we all are. Best of luck!
@@1MKWilliams I went and read the Google Audio Play book help files and it specifically said it needs to be an .epub file, so I was able to resave it as .epub, and just started to upload and replace my PDF with epub. Will find out if that was it soon. Thank You!
One easy fix for pronunciation is to spell phonetically. Read = red.
Ok, so got my book into the AI program and I see what you mean by correcting the sentence. It's not a over the night job. 😁 Now they need voices to yell when there's an ! Mark.
Glad you're making progress. Best of luck!
@@1MKWilliams thanks! 😁
Text to speech is hit or miss with pronunciation and emotion & always sounds robotic. Try speech to speech using Kits or Vocs AI for this
Is epub the app? I'm from south African
ePub is the file type for your eBook. I have a whole video on that here: ruclips.net/video/YbxW73aPmik/видео.html
Thanks for this. Do you know if there is a tool that would permit us to correct mispronunciations, whether than by phonetic spelling or audio uploading an file and mark it to indicate the mispronunciations. I assume AI would mispronounce my surname, my teddy bear's name and some of the words make up that are understandable in written form but may not be in mispronounced form>
EDIT -- Ignore my message above but I will keep it here in case other people have the same query and don't get this far in the video but read my comment. I now see my query is covered about 10mins into video : 0)
Yep, the pronunciation function is very helpful! Best of luck with your book :)
As a listener I have mix thoughts on this as some Ai sounds worse than others and the ones that are good eventually starts sounding robotic. I personally prefer if a human can read the book as it still sounds better than if a Ai did it
Are you able to upload your own Ai generated Audiobook to google play?
Not that I'm aware of, I believe you can only use their proprietary AI for narration
Thank you @@1MKWilliams
When you were clicking on the sampling, the voices had terrible static absolutely terrible. Hopefully the real thing doesn’t sound like that.
Mmmmm. Can you upload part of your book, like a sample, to entice readers to buy and finish in e version or would I just be pissing readers off 🤣
Once your book is completed you can select how much is available to sample so users can try before they buy.
This entire comment section makes me very sad. You're killing an artform.
@m.kwilliams hello ma'am in India country is possible to launch audio book
I believe find away voices is the best option since they allow users from all over the world to sign up. Best of luck with your audiobook!
@@1MKWilliams ma'am I want to launch my audio book on google play is possible or not? Pls share yr fb id also.
Findmyvoice canceled my audiobook with good AI . They detect all
Did you find a service that allows ai narration?
All change, Findaway now accept Google narrated books
