  • This video covers all the questions I've been getting in regards to the Fender Mustang Amplifiers (III & IV) on RUclips, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. I broke the video down into sections in hopes it will make things easier on deciding which amplifier is right for you and my opinions about each amp for home, at a gig, for portability and overall sound and tone.
    If I missed anything feel free to post your comments and questions below and I will reply to your questions.

    I have gigged the Mustang 4 in good sized venues including an outdoor gig to a field of 1400 people. We didn't need to mike the amp as the volume and sound quality are outstanding. Everyone who hears the amp is amazed when they discover that it is digital.I play it with a Gibson Les paul studio and it sounds very powerful the bottom end is unreal and it plays just like valves under your fingers. I can't fault mine in anyway although it would be nice if the two button footswitch had lights. I use both the 4 and the 2 buttons and its easy to get confused with settings, a small screen on pedal would be even better. Cheers

    if you are going to be purchasing a mustang, just spend a little extra cash and go with the IV.
    having 2 12 inch speakers gives you that deep range of lows that you cant get out of 1 12.

    Shane, I followed all your vids on the Mustang before buying. All I can say is THANK YOU for providing simple no-nonsense informative vids showing what these amps are capable of. I bought a M III and 4 button footswitch late 2014 and have gigged with it ever since. Who would have thought such a relatively cheap amplifier could produce such convincing sounds? Plus my set up and tare down times are so much quicker. Thanks again mate keep up the good work.

    take care of your back! I had to have fusion surgery at L4-L5-S1 and it didn't go well... I ended up permanently disabled at age 38. It's been 10 years and I still walk with a cane. Modelling is definitely friendly to bad backs!

    I picked up a used Mustang 3 V2 ,with the 2 button switch and Wow ,why did I not have one of these earlier?..What I like the most is the all the Fender amps to choose from, and cab simulation, I also like the 59 deluxe, but go for the super Sonic often..from clean to heavy, it's amazing the range of these amps, I'm running stereo with a Katana 100. You would not believe how awesome the tone in stereo. Thanks for the awesome reviews on these amps! Fender owes you!

    As an owner of a Mustang III, Shane I have to agree with your observations of these amps. I intend on putting a speaker outlet on my Mustang III so I can see how my 2 x 12 cab sounds. I totally agree with Pete Bobkat that these amps do model valve/tube amps well and I'm also amazed at their sonic potential!

  • @davidgeorge3381

    Dead on accurate on your assessment of the III versus the IV. I'm happy to see someone out here that's obviously knowledgeable on amps and isn't a tube snob. I've been into modeling amps for a few years now and they really do make the working musician's life a LOT easier. One thing that would be of benefit to a lot of folks is a tutorial on how to best use the Fender Fuse software and how that can simplify the initial setup on these amps by exploiting the public library of tones people have contributed. The complexity of all of the choices on these amps is one thing that puts people off, but if they understood how simple Fender has made it they might reconsider.

    I have loved these videos. The blind tests have been amazing and have fooled me. I am a proud owner of a Mustang III and have been gigging with it for almost a year now. I really want the V.2. There are some great features on the newer models. I will say this though, when gigging with the amp I have the model volume on 9 or 10 and when you push the master above 4 you get a great tube like "dirt". I use the twin and the bassman almost exclusively on this amp. I play at church every Sunday as well as classic rock and blues on Friday and Saturday nights. My strats just sound terrific through this baby. Looking forward to any more posts from you with this amp.

      Hi Aaron. So good to hear that you're gigging with the M3. If I ever get to that stage of being able to play for others it's good to know the M3 is up to it. My fave amp sound is the 65 Twin. So sweet on the clean settings. I also like the Brit Watts & Bassman. Great amp & exceptional value. My only gripe with it is the presets seem to be in the wrong order so I grouped all mine together so all my Twins are sequential, then all the Bassmans sequential etc. If I was gigging I'd just customise a preset for each song then list what numbers they are and choose as required. Or I'd dump the presets to the amp in the set list order and make a few notes. Let me know if you've got any video's of you anywhere and I'll have a look.

      This is probably a silly question but do you have anything else running through the virtual effects loop on the mustang? Hook it up to a computer and see if anything else is doing anything weird in the chain. I would start there and see how you go. Also make sure the connections to the amp are in properly because they might only be in 3/4 of the way by accident?

    One thing I'd mention in my experience is that for home and light jamming use more speakers sounds better at lower volume - the fuller sound and presence kicks in even if if's not cranked.
    I have a V head here and the matching 4x12 because closed-back works better for multi-stuff use (including my Bass VI), as well as my venerable Jazz Chorus and 10 year old or so Hot Rod Deluxe.
    I have a couple patches that are so close to the HRD I can't tell which is which unless I note it on the track's recording log.

    Thanks for the Q&A on the Mustang III and IV. I was sold on the III until I figured in the additional price of the 4 button switch. It'd only be $110 difference if I went with a IV. Not bad considering you get 2x12's instead of one.

    I was convinced to get a EVH 5150 pedal ($200)...then realized that the Mustang 3 was WAY more gear for the money ($300)! So many sounds and I didn't want all the fuss or hit and miss with $300 worth of pedals! To me, pedals is a chore to tweak and has cables everywhere! I want 1 amp that gets all teh sounds and take to any room or take to friends and not worry about 5-6 pedals and cables. When I want a special sound, I plug into my 50w tube amp! I am officially done with pedals!

    One thing nobody mentions is how close the buttons are on the four button pedal. For those of us with big feet, it makes it really hard to select just one button without accidentally hitting another and changing everything. I might have to go back to separate pedals just because of this.

    I've been watching your videos for a while now and I gotta say the work you've done is just great. It's VERY helpful, and I'm sure a lot of people around the world really appreciate it. If you don't mind, I'd like to make a request. Would you please do a video explaining how the mustang (III in my case) gets along with pedals? I know it's not the best amp to use pedals with, but I'm really interested in knowing how good high gain pedals (boss metal core and marshall jackhammer in my case) can sound through a mustang, and how to get it right. I already saw the one about the tubescreamer, but that was more or less a comparisson betwen that one pedal and the integrated effect it emulates, right?. I haven't been able to find a setting that nails the use of high gain pedals in a live situation so far, and I want to believe this can be done. Some people say it's impossible, some people say it's not. So I say: who but you to clear this out? Thank you so much!

    So the III does things better than the IV and vice versa. Modelling-wise I think it's safe to say they're the same. So wouldn't it make sense to go with the V head and use whatever cabs fit best for the sound you're seeking (or the space you have in your car or on stage, or whatever fits the venue)?
    Unfortunately though, I think the V head is way bigger than it has to be, just to fit with the Mustang cab. I'd have bought it if it was smaller.

    Shane, your videos are causing me to have a religious conundrum. I'm very, very seriously considering offloading my Hot Rod Deluxe (modified with a new baffle to house a 12" cannabis rex AND a 10" eminence legend, it really smokes) and most of my pedals and getting a Mustang IV. I'm actually losing sleep over this. I've had various vintage and modern tube amps and have ALWAYS been a tube-only guy, but you're screwing up my life, man! WHAT DO I DO!?

    • @intheblues
      @intheblues  10 лет назад +1

      It sounds like you need to keep the amp you've worked hard to modify if you ask me. Check these mustangs out second hand see if you can budget for both instead of selling one you like. Test them out first, but they totally rock. One of my best friends uses a Mustang III as his main amp now (Brian from the live clips of the amp). I would suggest playing if you can before hand, before you make a sell all decision. If you can keep the one you have, then having a Mustang IV as an option is awesome man.

      intheblues I took one of my best fellow guitar playing buddies in the store who admitted he was skeptical. We only had a Mustand 3 V2 in the store to tinker with, BUT we had the added bonus of having, right beside it, a brand new Super Sonic 22, Deluxe Reverb, Princeton Reverb, and a Twin Reverb. I compared it to each of the amps by making sure both amps had their knobs set identical to one another, and I'll be damned if my friend's eyes didn't jump out of his head. He quickly became a believer.
      I've decided to get rid of my hot rod deluxe and just stick with a Mustang, as I'm a 1 amp kind of guy. I just can't make up my mind between a 3 or a 4! If it's a 3, I can take my hot rod straight in and trade for a brand new one. If it's a 4 I have to try and trade second hand, which could take a while. I've read the 3 is plenty loud, but I don't know if I would crave that thick low-end thump of a 2 speaker setup or the stereo effects on the IV.

      Brian Carroll Hey Brian. Sounds to me like you need the 4 after this excellent review by Brian. I have a 3. I got it after selling my G-Dec 30 on Ebay which I got really good money for too so selling secondhand isn't a real problem. If you can handle the extra size and weight of the 4 go for it. The line outs on the 3 are 2 channel by the way too.

    Shane, love these videos. You are doing a great service for many people who are learning to play, and to acquire gear. Just wondering if you have you done any recording with the Mustang III v2 using the XLR outputs?? I'd be curious as to how you found it? Thanks for what you do!

    I would have got one of these but the foot pedal seemed like it would be slow to use live

    Shane, if I plug an mp3 into the Mustang iv, will the sound come out of the speakers stereo or mono?

    Roland has sold over 1 million of their ubiquitous Cube amps. How about a comparison twixt the Mustang 3 and the similarly priced Cube 80 X/ or GL .

    Hi Shane, just a quick question. I want to use my mustang 3 as a speaker only and use my pod hd500 for modelling.. how to bypass the mustang? Thanks :)

    • @Codger1212
      @Codger1212 7 лет назад +1

      Simon Kristoffer if you have the Mustang(III) V2, Make sure you have the latest update. You can now bypass all modeling by going through the effects loop. I had my Firehawk hooked up that way for a while.

      thanks bro.. just did that and yes the amp bypassed using 4CM.. now I want to know if I can use the XLR out on my mustang still connected to my pod?

    Does the built in audio interface could do such a good job as a scarlett 2i2 ? Or will it be better if I use the scarlett?

    Is there a way to get a looper pedal (boss rc-3) to work with the mustang 3? I've been trying..haven't figured it out yet.

      i was interested in the same thing, havent got a mustang yet but you should plug the pedal in the effects loop so it goest after the effects

    Is the other guitarist in your band going to ditch his now overpriced Bandmaster, considering the tones between that and the Mustang are almost discernible?

    Still trying to set my loop groove under a different effect than my solo. I plugged the Boss RC3 through the back but it still changes with the effect modules. Matter of fact my front line in stops and I can't hear the guitar. Someone drop me some step by step. Thanks.

      I think there is a setting on the amp for the effects loop, take a look. if I remember its under the same menu as the footswitch options...

    • @BrazenNL

      Line out is XLR. I think you meant to say speaker out? It doesn't have that, but it's an open back and the cable is right there. Easy mod.

    I have to disagree with you a bit - barring the screen the speaker on the III is not as nice as the II - I would go for Mustang II for home :)

    • @intheblues
      @intheblues  10 лет назад

      I don't have the II. I only own the III and the IV. These are questions I get about those two in particular ;)
      The II is a great home amp, but I am only going off my experience with the two I own.

      Yeah, I realize I came across like a douche - :) Out of the two :)
      I have the MIII - and I don't like the sound as much as I did the II - especially the Dlx reverb - I will probably install a switched speaker out jack onto my MIII just to test it with other speakers :) - and like you, I still use my tube amps much more - I can't be sure why they feel better, but they do.

      Jaka Jarc You might be able to change what Cab setting you have on your Dlx Rev for a sound that's more appealing to you.

      Yes, I have done that as well, and you're right. I find that the III sounds very nice, but has to be at a certain loudness to get the speaker moving.
