    Gerald great job once again. If I could make a suggestion or request I'd like to see how you are cutting the pipe, prepping the pipe, then fitting it up. You might ask why? My answer is simple so I can take this knowledge and apply it to my advanced welding class for my high school students for next semester. We will be doing a 3G plate test on 3/8" plate, then we will move into pipe both stick and some stick/tig combo for real world experience. All to prepare them if they choose to go into welding or trade school. The last half we do some fabrication work/projects to make it fun and keep them interested. Thanks for the great videos!

      Interesting you mention all the prep work Etc. I had the same thought. Yesterday I spent some time planning an outline and this week we will start filming several parts on those topics .

    Great tips. I find them very helpful . 1 question. Why can you do your root pass down hand. In Canada we have to do our roots up hand

      BASED ON MY PERSONAL RESEARCH AND CONVERSATIONS IVE HAD WITH OTHER CANADIAN WELDERS IN THE PASS , I BELIEVE THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR TWO COUNTRIES IS IN HOW MUCH GOVERNMENT CONTROL IS INVOLVED . HERE IN AMERICA OUR INDUSTRY IS STILL, FOR THE MOST PART CONTROLED BY THE INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES. THEY MAY CHOOSE TO FOLLOW SOME ORGAIZATIONS WELD PROCEDURE, BUT ARE NOT REQUIRED TO. EACH COMPANY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INTEGRITY OF ITS WELD SYSTEMS, AND ANY LIABILITY IF IT FAILS. THEY HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY, SO THEY GET TO CHOOSE WHAT PROCEDURES THEY WELD TO. WHEN PRESSURED PIPE WELDING BEGAN IT WAS MOSTLY WELDED UP HILL WITH ACETYLENE AND OXYGEN TORCHES FOR HEAT AND BARE RODS FOR FILING AND CAPING. LATER AS RELIABLE STICK RODS WERE INVENTED PRESSURE PIPING IN PLANTS AND POWER HOUSES WAS STILL WELDED UPHILL AS WELL .IN THAT DAY PIPE WAS HAND BEVELED AND NOT SO WONDERFUL AS PEOPLE TRY TO MAKE IT. YOU WOULD HAVE IRREGULAR FIT UPS AND SPACES, SO UPHILL WELDING WAS MORE FORGIVING FOR WIDE GAPS AND YOU COULD TURN THE MACHINE UP AND MELT THROUGH THE TIGHT PLACES. HAS AMERICA WAS GROWING AND THE USE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS INCREASED, THERE DEVELOPED A NEED FOR MORE AND MORE PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION AT A FASTER PACE AND LOWER COST. IN ABOUT 1933 MR MATHEY INVENTED AND PATENTED ONE OF FIRST RELIABLE AND WIDELY USED BEVELING MACHINES ,ALLOWING FOR CONSISTENT BEVEL ANGLES AND SPACING FOR WELDED JOINTS . SO DOWNHILL WELDING WAS RATHER QUICKLY ADOPTED, USING A 30 DEGREE BEVEL AND A TIGHTER SPACE TO MINIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF FILL METAL REQUIRED. THE TRAVEL SPEED TO BURN A ROD INCREASED AS WELL. TOGETHER THESE THREE ADVANTAGES, ENDED UPHILL WELDING FOR PIPELINES AND OILFIELD WORK. THE WELDING INDUSTRY, LKE THE MEDICAL INDUSTRYS IS SLOW TO ADAPT TO CHANGE, BUT OVER TIME THE PLANTS AND POWER HOUSES ADOPTED A HYBRID WELD PROCEDURE USING A DOWNHILL ROOT AND HOT PASS, FOLLOWED BY A 7018 FILL AND CAP, FOR MORE SPEED AND PRODUCTION ON MOST CARBON STEEL APPLICATIONS . THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIPELINE WORK ,WAS ROUGHLY FROM THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO, TO THE LATE 1990's. OUR FAMOUS PIPELINE UNION LOCAL # 798 IN TULSA OKLAHOMA WAS FORMED IN 1949. DURING THIS GOLDEN AGE YOU COULD PRETTY MUCH WELD AS FAST AS YOU COULD GO AND THE WELDS STILL PASSED X RAY AND HYDROTESTING. TODAY THERE ARE STRICTER WELD PROCEDURES FOR TRAVEL SPEED AND THE AMPERAGE USED. HOPE THIS HELPS ANSWER YOUR QUESTION . THANK YOU ERIC!
