    One thing i noticed doing open root 6010 is it seems super critical to get the amp settings just right. Most welding seems to have forgivness but in my limited experience its a small window between lacking penetration and a out of control keyhole.
    And keep the land and gap identical when adjusting settings.

    This always makes me think of the heroes who did this for thousand of hours - every working hour for years - building the ships and tanks and guns for the allied militaries use to win World War 2. Coming to work every single day with their lunch box and thermos, laying down tons of weld on those big steel plates - only to do it again the next days! And today, they are doing it for the important commercial markets. Hard working people!

    This is also like welding on the shell of a tank. Except the horizontal seams are welded with a submerged arc welder and the Verts are welded with 5/16 6011.

    Pro tip for pipe welders, dont let your fitter know how good you are or ull be "stig" welding rod in both hands stick welding, the second the crowd knows what they can get away with ur fits get worse worse and worse

    I'm new to welding and am stuck on an assignment. I believe the plate in question is too thin to allow 2 passes but here's the assignemnt. 2G Square open root butt joint on 3/16” plate with 3/16” root opening; use E6010 1/8” rod to achieve complete penetration; cap with E7018 1/8”. is this a reasonable assignment? Can you make a video or share thoughts on what I can do to make this work? Thanks.

    • @user-sq7cz8mz2y
      @user-sq7cz8mz2y 3 месяца назад +2

      Yep That sounds awful thin. Usually a bend test is 3/8ths thickness. Maybe they are trying to save on material. You really have to run on that root pass. Keep the voltage lower too.

      Look up Phillips Safety Products. I use the standard gold lens shade 11 or 10 depending on what process I’m using. They have several different styles to choose from and all are great. Wins Lens is also chosen by a lot of people; however, for me that color isn’t comfortable for my eyes. Lots of folks love it though. Hope this helps. Oh and change your clear lens frequently. I change mine first thing in the morning then after lunch and if something hurts it that interferes with my site picture I’ll change it then too.

    • @anthonymiglino
      @anthonymiglino Год назад

      Depends on how close you are, if you're close and can't see maybe look into cheater lenses. Also make sure you're cleaning spatter off the outside and inside lenses. I weld about an arms distance away so I sometimes have trouble seeing, messing with the angle of the rod/torch and your head might help too. Hey, its common sense but sometimes we forget, I am embarrassed how long it took me to figure out I can weld either way not just away from me.
      As for hoods, any modern cheap autodark, miller, Lincoln, even Vulcan and Chicago electric from harbor freight. Saw a bunch in the shipyard I worked.

    • @jeffsmith3941
      @jeffsmith3941 Год назад

      Speaking of Cheater Lenses. Tom Waters actually will make your glasses prescription into a set of cheaters that’ll go in your hood. Some of my buddys use them and really speak well about them. Hope all this helps everyone is sending you some good ideas.

    And really you should be getting them ready for structural because not everybody's going to be a pipe welder less than 10% of these graduates of that school will go on to weld pipe most ridiculous thing I've ever seen you train people to do something then never going to do open root on a piece of plate is a life skill that has carried me for 30 plus years I've never touched a piece of pipe I can't figure out why I would want to and yet that's all they pushed down my throat whenever I was in welding school what they should be teaching is I-beam fit up

    • @fishsohorny
      @fishsohorny 3 месяца назад

      Maybe because welding pipe can pay up to twice as much as welding structural
