This week, we are stick welding a 2g horizontal welding test plate.
Thanks goes to to Triangle engeering for the plates as well as the test stand. Хобби
I'm a experience Welder but not certified, with your help I was able to prepare in short time for the test and pass very easy, thank you!
What test did you have
Was it the single v joint plate? Vertical or horizontal?
As a metallurgical engineer I can say that I sincerely appreciate the craftsmanship that it takes to make a good weld.
mcwhite1002. How did you go about becoming and engineer and how long did it take?
@@Serenityword The 4 year Bachelors is standard then if you want a Professional engineering license (required for some disciplines) you have to take two further exams administered by the State. One you can take (called the FE exam) in college, the second you have to wait till you have 4 years working at the level of a PE. Then you can sit the exam. Upon passing you get your PE license.

@@Serenitywordfor metallurgist it's honestly not worth the amount of time for schooling and the student loans. As a welder you can make well over 6 figures. As a metallurgist you are making the same but obviously you need your 4 years. I'm so thankful I didnt move to Colorado and go to the school of mines. Instead I'm doing commercial diving and being an underwater welder/construction worker on an oil rig
I learn more from you than my welding school
Most definitely.
Most of what I learned from school is from them telling me to come to videos like these they don't really teach s***
Lmao why do you think I'm here rn, I can't keep my beads consistently
In mine literally they just gave me my tools and a booth and said get to it, I had to ask all the other guys what to do because i'd never even welded before 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Literally
I just watched your video and I'm 17 and in trade school and high school at the same time I also watched your 3G plate video (and also commented on it) to help me with the plate test for 3G. And I came across this and I already passed 2G plate in school but you can never have too much help. Thanks again Jody.
Thanks. I've upped my welding game quite a bit in both stick and mig thanks to your videos. It's opened up so many avenues to take my career. I focused mainly on mig in school but now I'm quite proud of my stick work too. Keep up the good work.
I'm new to both welding and your videos and i really enjoyed this video's cross sections. Helps a lot to understand the importance of amperage selection. Hope to see more of that. Cheers from Denmark!
Perfect!!, I'm just about to do this tomorrow at my college, thank you!! Helped me a lot, the thing I struggled with most was when I was doing my root run, the rod kept sticking.
Thanks a lot. This channel is invaluable as started school a month ago and will be watching your content during downtime 👍👍
Back when I passed this in school I remember we had to gouge the backing plate off with a torch then grind it all flush, cut the coupons then bend it. It was always an eye opener for an imperfection to come popping out. My teacher would look at you and say, get some more plate and donut again. I do miss stick welding.
Yes that' what I'm currently doing for 2g and 3g mig and stick for a cerification. For our coupons first we pass visual then we strip off the backing then we grindem smooth and bendem.
Jeez in Canada this is a lot harder haha.. we have to do 2 root passes, and we have to do a stop start on each root pass and those stop starts get bend along with the cap gets bent.
Jordan Atlin that would be a K prep not a V prep, more common for structural joints than pipes
Very much appreciated for your tips. One never stops learning. Thank you, as a journeyman welder/fitter
I do a lot of macrosectioning for my tests in RSEW, AND GOTTA SAY I LEARNED ALOT JUST NOW, EVEN BEFORE YOU SHOWED THE CROSS SECTION IN THIS VIDEO I WAS THINKING TO MY SELF LETS MACRO IT...... AND YOU DID, WITH ONLY THE RUST BUSTER.... PURE AWESOMENESS!!!!!
You have some excellent tricks and tips Jody and you definitely know your stuff and care about your viewers. I've learned so much and have gotten so much better at using my everlast equipment. I'm getting a lot of value from my equipment because of your videos.
When you already have the root pass in try using the grinder on one side to make an even little Vally to weld into. It insures that you don’t have any air pockets or porosity in your weld as well and makes it less likely to exceed the hight of the weld once its all filled. Do it for each side until you reach the top. Ive passed many weld tests this way and had a solid plate.
No Grinders on a AWS chipping hammer brush and maybe a file
Jody, thanks so much for the videos & help! I also appreciate that you post your welding without cutting & pasting just perfect work!
Jody-
I appreciate seeing the slight mistakes/problems encountered on the test plate (instead of a flawless, edited, "show'") We almost always have something that isn't "perfect" and need to know how to deal with it and improve our welds for next time!
Thanks for the great videos!
Dave
No one better bail on any of the high quality content that you create. Not even the adds
I love your videos sir. i really appreciate you taking the time to put up videos because im new to welding and ive just started a class about 3 weeks ago and im learning how to weld so your videos have been a huge help on understanding beads and pieces of work as well as fundamentals of welding. Thank you so so much sir
I'm in welding 1 in hs and I was having so many problems with 7018 and this helped so much
another great video Jody. im going for a cwi exam in may and found the evaluation at the end quite helpful. keep it up.
Excellent instructions, a true tradesman.
The cut and etch was an eye opener. Would have been cool to follow up with what adjustments you would make and do the whole exercise including the cut and etch over to show the resulting improvement. Always learning from you Jodie, thanks!
I'm going to try 135-140 amps this week while I practice my 2G groove plates. I tried 125 for the longest time and my rod would occasionally get stuck halfway through a bead, even after cooling the plate down. Thanks for everything you do! :)
You get your certs?
Great vids . I learned years ago to leave the flux on the welds when stacking horizontal fillets . Help provide a ledge for the next bead and keeps the lower bead clean from spatter. Except of course if the flux peals by its self . Lol
This I find works well with iron powder rods or flux cored wire mig .
I learn more in your videos then my dumbass teacher at school. It makes me so angry that im paying 15k but still having to research almost everything on my own while the teacher sleeps in the office. Your videos are a lifesaver. The little tips you mention give me an edge and I immediately improve while applying your tips where as my teacher will give the same crappy answer for everything: "do little circles."
I hope u found a better weld instructor!
Great video as I'm doing this exact test tonight. It will be cut and bend tested. Looking forward to upping my grade.
Hi Jody,
I don't have to pass anymore exams to keep me hired in my own machinist and welding shop but, this is useful to me as well...
Thanks for your trouble, Pierre
I mostly tig weld with my powertig welder but for kicks and giggles have been using it to learn stick welding. I learn so much from your videos too Jody.
Pierre's Garage well said
Hey from Canada.
In Canada our weld test forces us to demonstrate a tie in. I'm working on it this week in school and we also do not weave on this position; at least at my school. Other info provided can be useful but not quite what I was looking for to get a pass on my cwb test but an awesome vid anyhow.
Thanks
I love your videos Jody. Im always Learning something new, also brings back memories when i was in class and a student showed us your videos using a tig finger. Anyways, keep up the good work.
Keep working on it !!!!
Great TIG welder though...
I'm a Certified Stick Structural welder
Thanks Jody! Great video as always! I’ve learned lots from you.
hey Jody i love your videos and learn a lot but for the first time i might have a quick tip or not to tip that i learned from a guy at work, I kept blowing through my aluminum cans because my arc was wondering and I would turn up the voltage. i talked to my friend at work which is an old school welder and he asked me if my welder was close to me. I said yes next to my table he then asked of my ground wire is coiled up and hung on the welder and amazingly he was right. he told me to move it and not coil it for it creates a magnetic source and my arc will wonder to it. and to my amazement he was correct as soon as i moved it my arc stopped wondering and my welds looked better. Its tips like that i feel more should know and the only reason he knew was working in the ship yard they would wind up there grounds around their arms and set them down close then the arc would wonder that way. I don't know how true that is but it worked for me and I thought i would share for i havnt seen or heard you talk about it yet until a small portion of this video. i look forward to more videos and enjoy all that you do and your attitude is amazing. its a pleasure to even be able to learn what i have from you so thank you.
Jesse
Thanks for sharing that tip.I never thought about that but it makes perfect sense. I am going to remember that forever now.
Your buddy was right about the magnetic field. I have seen single lead lines jump when pulling higher amps so a coil would make a strong field too. Remember a generator has coils and what they do. Always something!!
thanks, Jesse Buis for sharing that tip about the ground cable here...that is how we all learn.
Thanks for that tip. I would never have thought that the magnetic field created would have such a far reaching effect. I try to never leave my extension cords coiled up for that reason and the fact that it will cause a voltage drop.
I've seen shavings line up around my welding leads, but it didn't occur to me that it could actually be pushing the arc around. Great tip!
I'am from Indonesia.
Thanks buat pembelajaran nya..
Yang dari Indonesia siapa aja disini😁 jangan lupa koment ya

Some great tips in there, especially about running the root as hit as possible. But a few things to note and WARNING TO ANY CANADIAN STUDENTS, many of these techniques will not fly in Canada when testing CWB W49(2G standardized stick ticket). CWB doesn't allow any arc manipulation, period. Twice the width of the electrode toe to toe at most. 1/2" gap +/- 1/16". You have to tie in to the stop and start which MUST fall in the dead center of the coupon, I've had buddies who have failed on the first pass on the root for going 1/4" too far. The 2G differs slightly in that it doesn't require 2 stop and starts, you only need one on the top edge.
Awesome video Jodie, have been watching and learning from your videos for about 5 years now and still keeping up to date! Really gotta get some more TIG fingers!
Thx for your input on your experience in Canada. It's also worth noting that while codes for weld tests say one thing, the employer has the right to require specifics like a tie in at a certain location. I once took a 5g open root mig test and was required to put the root and second pass in without ever breaking the arc. That's 12 to 6 o'clock with a u turn at 6 and back uphill to 12 without stopping on 8 inch schedule 80. Sheez my back was killing me after that. Haha

Jody, what on earth was that job for? Carbon pipe?

First I want to thanks Jody for his videos which are awesome and truly helpful !
I would like to know if I can find any videos about Canadian welding tests as 2G standardized stick ticket or mig , tig .. I am sure that it could be really useful for people like me who has to take welding tests in Canada .
How do you keep a steady hand? Seeing you keep it so still amazes me!
Great job on all your welding videos, from a welder to a welder. Local 92 Boilermakers.
love your videos very educational i am studying for some upcoming weld test.
thank you in advance
Jody, you are the man! Have learned a lot watching your videos. Thank you! Keep them coming 👍
Great vids. I'd be interested in seeing the options for removing the back strap for bend testing.
Really like your videos would love to watch how you do a CWB TEST COUPON
I love your videos they really helped me a lot.
another very educational video, nice torch kit there,,,,,,
thanks
Thanks Jody! Great video as always ,keep it safe thank you, and God Bless to you and your family
I had a little trouble with the valley thing lol on 2g, 2g is a little pain but what I found to work a lot is a horseshoe you can tie end the toe of the welds with it and doesn't sag looks something like this ---> C or a half moon works great after you get the hang of it
Doing v-butt vertical up and T-Fillet overhead soon, cant wait for the vids :)
Just past my test..thanks for the videos
The backing strip is easy....I'm stuck on horizontal open butt joint right now...got my flat 1st try.made a 17 out of 20 but as soon as I turned that plate sideways it all changed....what sucks is that it happened Thursday and we don't have skool on Fridays plus we have monday off.
Hi Jody good welding tips to easy method
Hi sir...i respect your welding techniques...can u please do a video doing a root pass with the 7018 in the vertical position please
hello men you videos are fantastiscs, I learned a lot of your techniques You are master welding saludos desde mexico.
Hey great video and explanations on etching and seeing the weld nuggets. I was wondering if you have ever welded with stick inconel rods in the verticle and overhead positions. I just passed a welding test for a better job and man welding with inconel was pretty hard for it being my second time welding with that rod ,any thoughts.
I want to see you do the root pass. And what is the gap between both plates ? Have a trade test coming up so want to be perfect. Your welding is top knotch !
Am a welder, but this guy to me is the best
Great video thanks, leengths here from Portugal 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
You should do an open root tank procedure with back gouging or back grinding.
Fantastic video. Thanks.
I learn more from you than I did in my 9 months at 2 different welding schools. Unfortunately I never passed this test, but etching probably would've helped a lot because although each time the test plate looked passable, I failed for slag inclusion. Great video! Makes me want to buy a stick welder and learn how to do this properly this time. Thanks for the great video content
the root pass melds 4 pieces together if one or more fails to puddle you have a weak root pass and could surely fail bend or x-ray tests i have only failed one 3-g certification test it was right out of welding school they allowed me to retake it and passed and was certified on bridge code 1" Plate double bevel with backing strip .
Wow this is welding career suddenly seems a lot harder than I though it would be. May need to rethink this
Excellence in welding fundamentals
I'm 15 years old in 10 th grade in a welding class and this video was extremely helpful because it helps me see how you need to run it
Hi Jo! Angles are critical to all welding. You MUST pay close attention to the work angle and travel angle. Look those up if you aren't sure what they are!
Go to the Tipsandtricks web page, click on the 'Forum' tab and check out the Forum. Register and introduce yourself! After you do your introduction, feel free to post pics of what you are doing and ask for advice!
Good luck!
thank you I practiced it today and did very good
Good work, Jo! Repetition is what makes a good welder! No one masters this skill by sitting around and doing nothing! Like I said, go to the 'Forum' and post some pics. of what you are doing. The guys love it and will always be respectful and willing to offer good advice
Thank you
Jo Messer
Thank you so much for sharing
Very lovely video
Also I tend to push the final layer beads to get a flush finish without undercut to the final bead .
Thanks for the tips!
Better instruction than most anyone I've had up to and including my professors and instructors at Purdue!
My high school offers welding. I'm in 10th grade. It's my second year welding. I've started learning this rod but I've had a hard time.
Love the videos. Weld tests aren’t the same as welding in the field. Old rods, weather, shitty steel and bad positions all play a part in it.
Question for you welders in the field. Ive been in a bunch of different hands on fields from machining to wood construction for a few yrs at a time but have always enjoyed welding. From a young age my dad had me arc welding all of the repairs and projects around the farm.
In the last 5 yrs ive been welding for my boss a wide variety of projects in a wood metal stone type fab shop. Mostly tig and very little mig. He wont allow arc because of splattering as most of the projects are art based and looks take the priority over strength. But its cool stuff and a lot of stainless. I haven't got into aluminum and has yrs since i have arc which i felt i was above average at.
So the problem is I want to get into welding as a career. At 40 yrs old would i be wiser to go to school and get the proper training or hire on to a full time welding fab shop and continue my learning and career that way?.
Ive always thought i get good penetration in whatever im welding but that penetration test at the end of the video opened my eyes to the fact i dont know what my welds look like on the inside. And some of the projects are somewhat structural with live loads or suspended from above. Ive had a few welding classes in college and tech school but more of a wide range of basic skills. And my instructor never told me i was so good that i should choose welding as a trade but i think my welds look good and always consistent heat signs. Unfortunately my boss is more of a designer than a welder and truthfully is horrible at welding so i rely on RUclips for tips. What to do haha.
Thanks to those who took 5 minutes out of there life to read this novel. Anyway any advise my next move will greatly be appreciated. Big country
Awesome video sir!
+weldingtipsandtricks My welding instructor told us that for a test where you use a 7018 root, to run one or two good hot beads lengthwise on the back of the backing strap as a form of pre-heat. Works great!!!
why not? run the beads, get the piece positioned and have at. what difference would it make to the inspector?
Great idea if you can get away with it. That's a good trick to remember. It might come in handy some day on something else.
I’m trying to find a video how to do 2G plate I am stuck and I think I found the video good video hopefully I can do the 2G test and move on to 2G horizontal and then 2G overhead and then to the next class very knowledgeable video
Nice video. Keep them coming.
That's an interesting test procedure. Would that be for ASME ?
Here in Canada its completely different for CWB (Canadian Welding bureau) they get you to have two 3/8 plates with a 3/8 gap (or half inch i cant remember) top side beveled bottom at 90 and you have to travel in one direction only and you have to have two stop starts in your root.
Not only that but your not allowed to us a grinder unless its just a wire wheel and they take 3 coupons out of your place two roots where you stop/started and one face.
Really helpful man I appreaciate you
In Canada a CWB weld test always require a stop start on the root pass. Usually 2 stop/starts. As well they do 2 root bends on both of the stop starts and a face bend from the middle to check your cap. So this video seems kind of weird to me.
Happy indeed I am to hav lernt how to tig weld alluminium gaps with stainless steel back coz I av tig welder 275 to repair fuel tank abel kalaba zambia
I'm from Canada, unfortunately they won't let you burn into your stop they make you start on it, unless you get a beauty for an inspector lol!. It's tricky but in the end it is good practice. love watching your videos tho I always find something to try or take out of it!!
Nice video very educational Thanks!
You my friend are the welding god
Appreciate Jody!
Great video!
Very nice!
Hey can you do a welding pipe through plate video like they do on boiler tubes and a plate to plate outside corner like on outdoor hydronic wood burners?
Desde México Saludos muy bien good
Thank you very much, sir
Love how Jodi leaves (a rare) little mistake in
Shows easily it can happen
Thanks sir very good information
I, too believed in cranking up the heat to dig in and hopefully boil up any inclusions for the first three passes, then cranking down to 115 amps and standing there to let the plates cool before doing final cap passes. On the vertical up, after getting heat-soaked; your welds can get washed-out and saggy looking and tester will comment on it. My first time passing state cert, I did all high temp and that was my result. My excuse was; well, I passed and I got no inclusions. I made a few spike pick tools for the stubborn slag. Had a guy testing in the booth next to me, he was nervous. I said to him "Just do what you do every day!" He passed! I had some great instructors at community college (I learned most by watching them weld)...and a great employer that invested in my welding skills practice. (They threw me right into the fire of the real world putting up structural for overhead cranes with company cmaa aws cert). I went and got my state dept of commerce cert and was confident by then - I had already been doing this stuff at work for some time. Just do it for about a year every day - then go and pass your tests then let the local iron workers, steamfitters and boilermakers unions know you're available.
Thanks for sharing. For business good luck.
Depending on the type of rod you use, you need to clear out ALL THE FLUX, I can't tell what rod your using, but when they go to X-Ray the welds, if it's 7018 or 7024 the weld is just gonna go right over it and burn it all away, now with 6011 flux isn't exactly an issue, because it just burns right through it
yeah you don't know what you're talking about at all.
exelente maestro
I had an experienced welder tell me that oh shouldn’t bevel the edges when you are making the test plates because it’ll force you to angle the stick wrong. Is that right?
great video.
When taking a weld test aren't there restrictions on travel path, if you start from the left all beads must flow from that side ?
Hi Jody
I’m doing a 2g welding test , is it better to do a 2 pass 3/32 rod for the root pass , do you think I will get better root and edge penetration?
Good video!
Good video. Pls what's your polarity on the first pass?
hey, what is a good welder to buy on a semi-budget that can still weld metal up to 1/4" and maybe slightly above?
I learned to put my foot pass in without backing plate. 6010 root 7018 cap . And 7018 root . Backing plate is a whole easier . And I enjoy FCAW .
