One expericed welder told me that on long rods they turn down the amperage a bit on the go, at the end, with a ptentiometer remote. That is to cool down the rod. He was doing excavator bucket repairs, so the welds were not to be x-rayed. It is not easy, but could save you bunch of material
They say you're never too old to learn something watching this video I just learned a whole lot about something I never even heard of and I have been welding since I was 22 years old I have never heard of a hollow bead I researched it and wow I definitely don't want that in my welds
