57:05 This is quite cool! I know that O'Reilly. It's where I was when I found I had no brake juice left in my rusty Subaru. Bought two cans there, went five miles, had even less brakes. Found the leak in the Ingles parking lot. Topped it off and drove back the last eight miles hole, just downshifting and using the parking brake.

I had the head gasket thought ealier on when you pressed down on the radiator cap and the hissing got quieter. Was thinking that's not right, thats a lot of air pressure built up in a fluid zone. Throw a match on it and start from scratch. Step 1, Don't use something sooo prone to moisture absorption as MDF. That stuff wicks up every drop of moisure and swells sooo bad.

What a thought provoking video. I'm a fan of Wikispeed. It's a modular car made of aluminum tubing. Having seen this, I might just build one out of 4 x 4 wood posts and plywood. Might not use the 3.1 liter GM engine. True to form, your car's engine was garbage. At least the cam didn't break. Now I just need to draw it on Sketchup and go to town.
I love how the odds are stacked against you, but you always seem to be able to push through with a positive vibe and outlook. You are an inspiration to me when I am faced with adversity. Love the content as always!

Watching Derek squeeze into that thing was hilarious! I would love to see him work on an actual Italian classic, I bet he likes the Detomaso Pantera, Italian styling and a big old Ford V8!
The good ol 3100.. they started that series of engine in 95. Thats all i run in my derby cars. This one had a huge vacuum leak which is usually just past the throttle body in the upper plenum. Its a vacuum for the valve covers and something else that i forget because i weld that hole shut along with the egr port. They are amazing engines as long at the fueling is correct and it has good intake gaskets. Ive overheated mine a couple times and its still doing well. I just keep swapping it from one derby car to the next. Lol
Definitely one of the best drive it home episodes so far on the channel. The mid engine AMC was a complete gong show of a car, but this one set the bar even higher. I thought for a minute you might just go for a road side head gasket replacement. Probably not worth it at all being only a couple hundred miles from home.
That engine is famous for lower intake gaskets collapsing and mix the fluids. I've helped make several of these conversions out of fiberglass and aluminum. Most 2.8, 3.1 and a couple 3.8 swaps including the 3.8 supercharged
The Lumbarghini wasn't that bad, it had bigger opening door windows, more storage, better parts availability, better door fitment and body panel gaps than the original. I'm impressed you managed to coach it as far as you did. Trips like this are an experience, if it got you home without issue that would be boring, the fact that it broke down so often meant that you got to meet so many nice people who were willing to help. If it got you home you would never have met them.
Sorry about this one, Derek! It was a heck of a nail biting episode. If you don’t feel too compelled to burn it to the ground, it would be cool to see a different engine put in the Lumberghini. Or maybe an attempt at rebuilding the engine. No pressure though! You’re the man! Thanks for the entertainment! 😉
Derek, I have rescued/gotten running and taken home quite a few vehicles that sat for a long time myself over the years as a bona fide car/truck guy. One thing I always took with me when I went to buy or pick one up I had already bought was large packs of unscented baby wipes (Walgreens, yellow soft-pack, 500 count I think, $1.99-$2.99, dirt cheap) to quickly "dust" and clean up the inside after hitting it with a shop vac. Unscented baby wipes don't make the interior smell like baby lotion, they are already the right amount lightly wet and they don't tear or leave little pieces like a lot of paper towels do...and you just toss 'em when they turn black or brown. You might consider trying it one of these times to see if you think it's a simple, useful, vehicle-rescue tip. A bonus of having unscented baby wipes with you is they are great for quickly wiping your hands, wrists, arms off while working on the rig and on the way home. ;)
That was a great journey with you in the Lumberghini. It is about the journey and not the destination. Merry Christmas to you and your family and all the watchers. Thank you for all the great videos.
I loved this episode. I laughed so hard my stomach hurts. When you were washing it I was like no! Now it's going to be heavier all soaked with water and be too much for that tired engine to handle. Well this probably wasn't the best investment but maybe the RUclips views will make up for it. I also like that your videos are longer than most RUclipsrs. It is definitely worth every minute to watch. Very entertaining. 😂😂😂
Seen some thumbnails about this car! I’m ready to dig into watching this show ! Put the kids to bed and ready with a cold snack or two to watch this one of a kind find…crazy build!
The 3100 engine was a great engine. The Chevrolet Lumina had a 3100 160hp which was good for the 1990's. 3.1 L/3100 L82 The L82 ("M-code") was an updated, SFI replacement for the MPFI LH0, produced from 1993 through 1999. Compression ratio for the L82 was 9.5:1 and the bore measured 89 mm (3.5 in), while the stroke was 84 mm (3.31 in) giving it a displacement of 3.1 L; 191.3 cu in (3,135 cc). I totally agree, to think of all the work and time the guy put into that “lumberguini” is remarkable! Unfortunately the 3100 is known for blowing the gasket every time. Great episode as always Derek, best entertainment for a family around these days and for that…so many of us are grateful brother! Thank you for all you do. 🙏
I do cringe at using wood, but the builder really did an incredible job of taking this thing to completion. Usually these replicas get either abandoned or run with all the myriad fit & finish still left to do. Derek's work is entertaining, but I'd personally rather see someone give these unique cars given a good once-over before putting them on the road so they have a chance at a normal lifespan instead of taking a big risk of self-destructing.

you got that right! I will also always be a VGG subscriber! I usually fall asleep to a VGG video! I find his videos to be great! but I'm usually always watching one of his videos late at night so I fall asleep by the second or third hour long video I have playing. but I love VGG!
I laughed so hard at the abandoned tire shop! I think I enjoy the failures more than the successes. Keep up the great work Derek!
I know it look empty by the look of that garage door😂😂😂
Failures are great because that's the world most of us live in
This was the definitely the comedy episode. Right from the line "easy on the Sherman Williams" I never stopped laughing
We definitely appreciate the hard work you put into these builds and putting the content together. Not sure how you stay so calm. Thank you for everything
I love your grind , its much like my entire life , patching shit up good enough to get home just reacting to whatever life throws your way , a challenge and a half . Every damn day of it , never ending grind hard wrenching every day
Those welding skills are a good sign of why its made of wood 😮
Thank you Derek for creating so much fantastic entertainment for us over the years.
I hope you and your family are doing well, and have a fantastic Christmas and New Year celebration.
Best wishes from Norway.
Can't even imagine the hours that went into it, great, hail to the builder
That thing is so awesome. True redneck victory.
The builder was a dumbass that had too much money and too much spare time
Hail? No problem
It needs to be in a quirky museum with a Don Johnson/Magnum Pi type mannequin…
Too bad the builder used "particle board" when building it, OSB wood have been better.
Derek going out on a limb again, branching out you might say. Getting to the root of the problem and as usual he leaves us all fully entertained. I've left many more bad puns for others if they feel the need. Merry Christmas all.
Knock on wood that you can keep coming up with more puns!
Merry Christmas!
From what I saw he did his best. It's always a treat when you log into Derek's channel, just a pity he didn't nail this one (were those the ones you were thinking of)
Woodin
chew know it..
I’d say he bought one of those real woodies?!😂
It’s cool that someone dreamt up this idea and stuck with it and did a hell of a job making this rig outa wood. Thanks Derek , this was a trip.
My guess was this was going to be a mold to create the fiberglass panels.
Best show on the interwebs as always. Thanks for keeping us entertained.
Glad you enjoy it!
Can we all between the laughing just appreciate all the work that went into building this?!
there is no way I would ever drive that 300 miles. One accident and you have lost your life. Yet Rain? or any other problems. engine fire and you burn to death......Just no way I would do it.

Hey there brother! I love these videos, the ingenuity and skill that you use to bring these cars back to life is honestly astounding! your videos have inspired me to finally work on my late grandfathers 1953 studebaker champion. im not sure if this is typically a thing you do but as a person with little automotive expedience outside routine maintenance would you ever consider a video or a series documenting some of the best ways to diagnose issues and determine their fixability on these old cars? id love to see something like that
Went from “vise grip” to “wood clamp” garage in one episode. 😂
Derek makes me laugh in almost every episode. I’m not even half thru the video and I’m crying with laughter! Love this channel! Best content on RUclips. Thank you Derek!
I'm a Knoxville resident and I'm not surprised at all that this thing was dreamed up and made in Knox County.
Staying at the Days in on Asheville Hwy is something I wouldn't do!! Big Respect.
😂
What a thought provoking video. I'm a fan of Wikispeed. It's a modular car made of aluminum tubing. Having seen this, I might just build one out of 4 x 4 wood posts and plywood. Might not use the 3.1 liter GM engine. True to form, your car's engine was garbage. At least the cam didn't break. Now I just need to draw it on Sketchup and go to town.
I love how the odds are stacked against you, but you always seem to be able to push through with a positive vibe and outlook. You are an inspiration to me when I am faced with adversity. Love the content as always!
Couldn't have said it better, things don't always work but mindset is everyhing and luckily moneys not an issue. awesome feller!
The lengths a feller goes to entertain his fans is truly remarkable. I'm thankful for your humor and your undying determination. You make a guy happy knowing there are good folks still out there in this world. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas from a guy and his bunch in New Mexico. God Bless.
Watching Derek squeeze into that thing was hilarious! I would love to see him work on an actual Italian classic, I bet he likes the Detomaso Pantera, Italian styling and a big old Ford V8!
He said in a recent podcast that the pantera is one of his bucket list cars
Mine as well
At least you got some exercise and enjoyed the countryside !
God Bless You And Family
The good ol 3100.. they started that series of engine in 95. Thats all i run in my derby cars. This one had a huge vacuum leak which is usually just past the throttle body in the upper plenum. Its a vacuum for the valve covers and something else that i forget because i weld that hole shut along with the egr port. They are amazing engines as long at the fueling is correct and it has good intake gaskets. Ive overheated mine a couple times and its still doing well. I just keep swapping it from one derby car to the next. Lol
Just fixed the same leak in my grandma's car yesterday. I noticed the sound
I kept thinking I was hearing a vacuum leak when he was first messing with it!
This might be my new favorite episode! Action, drama, suspense!
I'd like to see it sanded and varnished
Sanded and varnished 😂😂😂
I'd also like to see it without paint, stained and clearcoated.
Yeah!! Or that salt water/electricity - 'burnt veins'(?) look and a pile of clear epoxy over top.
Great attitude. Derek is the automotive equivalent of Bob Ross.
You know it’s pretty amazing the detail that went into that….wow that would have taken an incredible amount of time !!
I'm not even sure how a guy finds things like this , but I absolutely love it!!!! Great video Derek!
I think the real question is, Why would a guy make such a contraption ?
Cuz he could.@@bryanb6931

Wonder if it will warp when it gets wet !?
Could have the fire dept follow you home :)
Great video! VERY entertaining to say the least. I was rooting for you.
There's the Bright Side! 😊
What if he just turned it into a stainless mini DeLorean/Fiero
@GaijinGamerGirl Oh yes. Doh.
Your determination on this one is something to behold. This car is a great reminder that just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I love this guys vibes! I wish I could be so positive and calm in a situation like that. Your a legend brother!❤
I agree 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Seen some thumbnails about this car! I’m ready to dig into watching this show ! Put the kids to bed and ready with a cold snack or two to watch this one of a kind find…crazy build!
The 3100 engine was a great engine. The Chevrolet Lumina had a 3100 160hp which was good for the 1990's.
3.1 L/3100
L82
The L82 ("M-code") was an updated, SFI replacement for the MPFI LH0, produced from 1993 through 1999. It featured a structural oil pan, a stiffer redesigned engine block, sequential fuel injection, and revised aluminum heads. Output for the L82 was up 20 hp (15 kW), over the previous Gen II LH0, to 160 hp (119 kW) at 5200 rpm and 185 lb⋅ft (251 N⋅m) at 4000 rpm. Compression ratio for the L82 was 9.5:1 and the bore measured 89 mm (3.5 in), while the stroke was 84 mm (3.31 in) giving it a displacement of 3.1 L; 191.3 cu in (3,135 cc).
Applications:
1994-1999 Buick Century
1994-1996 Buick Regal
1994-1998 Buick Skylark
1994-1996 Chevrolet Beretta
1994-1996 Chevrolet Corsica
1995-1999 Chevrolet Lumina
1997-1999 Chevrolet Malibu
1995-1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
1994-1998 Oldsmobile Achieva
1997-1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS
1994-1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
1993-1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (1993 received both LH0 and L82 3.1 L (3,135 cc) motors)
1994-1998 Pontiac Grand Am
1994-1999 Pontiac Grand Prix
I bet when it was parked it already had a blown head gasket-gaskets.
yeah if you replace the intake gaskets and the head gasket to begin with
My 93 lumina had a 3.1L MPFI engine just wouldn't die.
160hp good for the 90s?! For Chevrolet maybe 😅
@@Overworkt It was a midsized sedan. Ford and Dodge had similar hp for the same time. Taurus models came standard with the 140 horsepower (104 kW) 3.0 L Vulcan V6.
Sitting here by myself and just busted out laughing when Derek pulled out onto the road blind, hollared, “Comin’ out!” and the braced for impact. OMG! 😂😂😂. Still laughing from that and then he’s turning off the car at the air pump and says, “Man, I hope someone steals this.” 😂😂😂😅
The moment he said “man I hope someone steals this” no truer words have ever been spoken hahaha. There is not many times I’ve heard Derek say that

Thank you so much for making these videos, and all the rescue videos. Hope everyone has a great Christmas!!! Please keep em coming Derek.
A fiberglass mold plug used to fiberglass body make a fiberglass body
Merry Christmas!
Should definitely put a good 2.8 and transmission from a fiero just so it can move around reliably and find a local school that still has a shop class program of some sort. This is a crossover project that could really inspire someone to see the potential in the art of carpentry
But ditch the PRNDL lol
It's a bit of a lost cause for making it legal...
I don't think anything will ever beat the mid-engine Rebel, but this is a close second for "weirdest labor of love" you've covered.
Watching this episode made me smile it was like driving to see the big peach in Indiana . Quirky dude you rule .
Love this type of on-the-road-survival content, much respect for hanging in there until the bitter end. It may have been suffering, but it wasn't for naught!
Best one ever! I was dying, especially when you pulled in next to the dump trailer. You could have just as easily driven that thing in it and nobody would have mistaken it for anything other than debris. Your skills at limping home varying compilations of transportation is incomparable.
Great comment!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Honestly I'm impressed with the lumberghinis construction, it seems as though at least 73.8 percent of it is well designed and constructed, feller did a good job with the home made kit car, maybe Derek can redesign the roof so it fits a giant size feller better? I'd be interested in seeing VGG carpentry action
Or T-Tops, that way his taller frame could stick out a bit...of course, Derek might have to wear goggles at that point to drive it.
garbage
Your temperament is admirable, to say the least. Great stuff.
I would just like to say thank you for this video. It is truly one of my favorites. You close your eyes so many times and roll the dice with faith. You’re going to hit every time and I must say most the time you put off one hell of a mechanic and all-around good guy. Thank you for sharing your content over the years. You put many smiles on my face, give me a little laughter that sometimes hurt your truly awesome I can’t say it enough thank you thank you so very much for another great video
Wow, thank you!
This is your pinnacle video of all time. BUT gotta give it the props it deserves, brakes worked. didn't have change the gas tank AND you have (sort of) tail and headlamps (sort of). Speedo worked (kinda). You gave it all you had. I've been there.
Honestly surprised a guy didn't swoop on that suburban , I was waiting for it to happen and it didn't. Kinda cool to see a failed trip , doesn't happen often but goes to show it does happen. Love these videos, keep on keeping on ! Can't wait for a slight update on the woodburghini!
Right? Especially since he said he regretted selling the one he had before.
I think the only update we'll see of this, is watching the little humans roasting marshmallows as it burns in the center of rusty acres. LOL
Yeah, I think I would of parked the Lumbergeni and finished the trip with the Suburban. Then later come back with a car trailer for Fiero.
You remember the part from Talledega Nights, “My legs, I can’t feel my legs”
12:25
Same thing 😂
The craftsmanship on this car is amazing, it really looks like a Lamborghini. Its by no means a true replica, but it is very cool looking for sure. Id love to see photos of it from when it was first finished. And photos of its construction. Its super unique thats for sure.
This is the vise grip garage that makes it great ! Back to the basics! Loved the video.
