Slant 6 engines are some of the toughest ever made. It was no suprise that it made it home. They never should have stopped making them. That truck is a work horse.
I managed to blow up two slant sixes in my '74 Duster, though to it's credit the first one I blew still ran on four cylinders with a hole in the side of the engine where on of the pistons ejected itself. Man.. I'd love to meet the Hardass who bought a custom Dodge and said no to a radio.. he was like "No thank you. The sound of my farm animals is all I need in my heart.".
I bought a 1985 D100 with a slant 6 and 4 sp manual shortly after I got out of the Army. It wasn't winning any races, but it always started and did what I needed it to do.Nobody ever asked to borrow it,once they found out it had a third pedal. It finally succumbed to the salt that NYS puts on the roads in the winter. Great video, Derek. Do just enough to make it roadworthy. Tires, lights, and someone will take a chance on it. Love the channel and thanks for what you do.Oh, and a shout-out for your friend Don for the help , and helping out the woman with her issue. Good karma!
I have an 83 w150. When I saw the electronic fuel control system I felt the same way. I ended up cutting it all out and replacing the distributor and carb . Runs perfect. The old system controlled the spark advance.
After being out on short term disability from a motorcycle oops, I have really been enjoying catching up on your videos man. They crack me up and I always learn something from them! Love how humble you are man!
Dad custom ordered a 1980 Vo-lar-ay as a going to school rig for us teenagers. Radio delete, A/C delete, manual windows, four door with that slant six! Everything a teenager in the early 80s didn't want. Perfect. I'm glad yours got the "custom" treatment as well! Lol
@@Davide0033it was a firmly held attitude among many parents that transportation was just that. If no radio and air-conditioning the neighborhood kids wouldn't be wanting to go places with your kids. If there's no loud radio to distract young drivers it's good.
The brand new cars high school get are never loved. The 15 year old cars that burn oil and the weird stuff are the best. In the 90s one of my classmates had a 76 town car. It was like 6 foot longer than any other car in the row.
@@Davide0033 It was cheaper, and he could, lol. I swear if he could have deleted the heater he would have. Luckily it still had a cigarette lighter socket so we could plug in a small cassette player for tunes.
I had one of these (1987 ... D150, slant 6, 1 bbl, A-833 OD transmission, 'north of the border'. He is right, it had 'legs' - very tall gearing, came with 195/75/R15 (car tires?). It never died .. but had a few known ... 'items'. 1. Rear main seal leak, helped keep the underbody from rusting. 2. Slop in the trans linkage (external, could go under when locked and 'flip it'. 3. Carburetor icing in damp cold weather. 4. Made lots of carbon during -40C startups. 5. Pulling the vacuum lines actually helped - gave a little diesel grunt under light throttle, but much more power, and better milage (probably just bad spark advance/smog gear). It would always start .. never overheated. At -40C on the highway, mileage was awful. Starter was changed to a Nippon style - no sick dolphin noise, had enough power to pull start in 1st gear. Body 'weight reduction occured' long before motor would give. It truly was a Dodge ... both 'Do Or Die Gutless Engine' and also 'Drips or Drops Grease Everywhere'.
Way back in the late 90s I had a best friend in Highschool that had a 1986 one of these that had a straight six in it , he passed away awhile ago but thank you so much for bringing all of those good memories of that back just now with this video.

Derek I've been working on cars longer then you been alive. Buddy don't trust you life on a floor jack. Your a young family man. Please use a cinderblock, tree trunk, rock, the tire you took off, what ever you see around and put it under the frame man. Floor jacks fail, slip off the frame, etc young brother. Known friends in the fire rescue pulling people from under fallen cars. Thanks man
Yeah...good point. Especially using a floor jack on grass or dirt, they can shift . Wooden blocking works good, or at least one jack stand and a piece of 1/4 " metal plate to put it on.
Derek, you are the role model I want my kids looking up to someday, and you are currently my role model as I am a father and husband. You clearly love your family and desire to teach them how to live a dignified and meaningful life. You are always kind and patient, even when you never seem to have brakes or batteries. The world needs more men like you. Thank you for this channel. I’ve learned more than just mechanical knowledge, but also life knowledge from you.
My Grandfather had that exact same truck in the same color with the pin stripe...that was a good ole truck. Thanks for bringing back the good memories of rolling down the road road with him.
My dad introduced me to VGG about two years ago and Im so glad he did. Your humor lines up exactly like his so your videos is always like a good sit down with my old man.
Derek you are absolutely nuts and I love you for it. Dry rotted tires no problem. No headlights you'll figure it out. The effort you put forth to share these revival videos is so appreciated. That's definitely a "goin to town rig".
You are only using a jack on grass. You could lose your leg doing that. I suggest once the tire is taken off you should slide it under the truck as a fail safe. It is just a susgestion and it could save your life or just you legs. I enjoy your videos a lot. Especially tbe MOPAR ones.
First truck I ever drove was a like 1973 or 1974 F250 my grandfather purchased new off the lot back in the day, with the 460 and dual fuel tanks and all the bells and whistles.
Dude... You are breaking my heart. I was forced to get rid of my 87 D100. Ran great. Had to replace break lines and I was on the road again. No freaking rust.
The box on the firewall that melted is the voltage regulator. I am super impressed that you got standard blue streak parts for the ignition, those are super quality parts. Your Revivals are the best RUclips automotive content! Thank You Derek
Please don't stop being you, your channel is just the best, have gotten me threw some of my worst times, truly thank you and keep it up haus, God bless 🤘

Lost my older brother a few years back. He had an 85 ram with 318 automatic we worked construction out of. Went to south carolina after hurricane hugo and stayed a year working out of his truck there. Miss him and the truck. Great find!!
A 1st gen RAM, LOVE IT! I have an '84 Power Ram (W150) that my wife bought me back in '86, 318 w/air, ps, pb, 727 auto, no rust. Still runs great but the trans is very tired. Dash is great on mine also, can't say the same for my '96, it's self-delete dash has been activated, along with the self-delete clear coat.
I had a 74 Dodge Dart (from my grandfather) with the 225 slant 6 in it, I drove that engine to over 300k miles before I sold it. Pretty had to kill those engines, but up here in Canada they did NOT like the cold or wet weather!! And just a little tip, keep a spare ballast resistor and a regulator in the glove box-I learned that the hard way!
Ah yes...the ballast resistor! I had a hand me down 72 Dart four door slant six. I remember driving it on a trip from Winnipeg to Saskatoon in January, and having to stop and ditch the air cleaner because the carb was frosting it up with engine blow by from the PCV LOL! Great tough old car, wouldn't hardly do 70 miles an hour, but got you there every time! I'm old now, but I miss the days when I had crappy jobs and crappy cars...always a source of adventure!
The headlight issue is the floor dimmer switch. I had the exact same issue with multiple dodges. They get all corroded because of the water off your boots. Doesn’t help Derek, but might help someone reading someday
Hey friend, I watch almost everything you put out, and my mom used to watch it all with me while she lived. Thank you so much for everything you put out, from some midwesterners who live in NJ. Thanks Derek.
RUclips actually gave me ads at 25:50 right after Derek said after these messages we'll be back 😂the best part is it was a fellers O'Reilly commercial 😂
I love how you refer to your boys by" the humans you are responsible for (or something like that)." That cracks me up every time. Your humor is a good part of your channel.
This guy is brilliant! He has instant association of parts, their history, and their #numbers. I suspect that his time in the military was in G-2 work. It's a privilege to watch him work and learn his mind paths. I'm an 85 year old professor, when I grow up I hope to be as much like him as I can absorb. Thanks for your service, now and then.
It's great to see another rescue! Simple and straight-forward, spark, fuel, ignition, brakes. It would be cool if you got it mechanically sound on an ultra-low budget build and did another giveaway, You should ask Jessica what she thinks and do what she says. After all, she's the brains of the operation, right?
Ive always been curious about something. Does Derek actually taste the oil, or just pretending to ? I don't think that he would. I think oil would be deadly to consume.
I have been watching your channel for several years. This episode had me laughing out loud to myself several times. This is the "old school" style that I (and I imagine many others) love about your channel. I truly enjoy watching you "get into it" with that hilarious patter while at the same time putting on a master class in traditional American automotive repair. It's a super sneaky and incredibly intelligent way to teach and inform. I'm enjoying a few wobble pops after a long Friday at work and I am having the best time.
I have been binge watching everything vice grip for about 2 weeks now. Derek's voice is so relaxing. Even when he's screaming at birds. I listen to the videos even when I can't watch while I'm working just cause the voice talking you through things makes you feel good lol. Plus the satisfaction of getting things somewhat done and fixed helps reassure me that whatever job I'm on will work itself out.
Found a 77 Power Wagon(4wd), shortbed, 42k miles, 440 Magnum (freeze plugs in head, had to be special ordered) TF727 transmission. It was shed stored in the high desert of CA. The only thing that kept it from being drivable (other than the battery & fuel pump was the u joints. It had 3.5" lift kit installed (minus pinion shims). That's why it got parked because it kept needing u joints. Fastest turn around I ever did. It was the meanest, if not fastest, pickups I've ever driven. Should have kept it, but money dictated I couldn't.
Glad the algorithm recommended this one to me. I'm rescuing a 1972 D100. I didn't try driving it home though. Glad I didn't because my fuel pickup was clogged and the steel line along the frame rusted through. But I did get it to move under its own power eventually.
I had a 85 D100. It was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned . The slant 6 was not a power house, but it ever let me down. I bought it with 79 thousand on it and sold with 279 thousand on it. Michigan winters killed the body. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.
The box you are referring to as an ignition module on the firewall is actually the voltage regulator. The ignition box you are thinking of would have 4 or 5 wires. In this application, the ignition module is mounted to the breather labeled as electronic spark control, electronic spark ignition...lean burn...lol. Great video, can't wait to see where this one goes, thank you for sharing.
Seeing a two hour video on a Friday night made me smile that much bigger!! My brother had an 86’ Ram charger (dodges version of the blazer) . Same truck essentially. Loved that truck , had a 318 with a 3” lift with 33”x10.5s. Brought back great memories. Loved that big ram hood ornament that it had . Love the simplicity of a truck like that. Great video AGAIN!
Last night I channelled the spirit of Vice Grip Garage, and drove 260 miles in a car with a dodgy gearbox, bad engine oil leak and a slipping clutch. It's stressful.
When my dad passed in '91, he had a '78 Chevy version of this truck. My mother sold it and I just stood by and let her. I can't tell you how many times I have wished I kept his old truck!
The Spark Control Computer hanging on the air cleaner is THE WORST thing the EPA forced Dodge to do! Had one on my '78 Dodge Aspen R/T with a factory 360...to increase fuel efficiency. 😢 I finally pulled the 12 wire plug out, dumped the computer and ran the one power wire to an ignition box off of a '73 Challenger. RAN LIKE A CHAMP after!!!!!
That's awesome. I have a 96 F150 6cyl great truck but had a weird stumble sole times I couldn't figure out had a old school friend delete as much of the Crap I didn't need under the hood like air pump BS coffee can hose tangled mess its looks way better and that stumble is completely gone
I can’t believe it… but I’m looking right at it. A dodge without the dash being Wi-Fi ed. I’m a dodge truck guy. I drive a 02 2500 4X4 with a 24V Cummins as my daily and I have 79 power wagon with a 318 and 727 torqueflight. I’ve also owned several others along the way And you almost never find one with a whole dash once they went to plastic. Great video. Nothing like getting off work to an almost 2hr VGG video. Thank you Derek for all you do for us and the car community.
I’m not a Dodge fan in the slightest but it seems like early 2000s Dodges like you own were the worst about that. This generation didn’t seem to be plagued by that? I know I’ve put a couple heater cores in your generation of Dodge & man were those a mistake. I’ve cut my hands a few times while those crappy dashes just crumbled while pulling. It seems this generation was pretty solid. I’d never own a Dodge personally but I respect what he’s got here. I can’t wait to see what Derrick does with it. I’d like to see for a first time, a complete frame up “restomod” V8 swapped show/hot rod type of build with it.
ya the 96 to like 02 were terrible for cracking up. And the diesel seemed to be worse guess cause of the rattling especially on the 12 valves. I hate it. My daily would have been loaded for 2002 has leather heated seats all electric and it’s still in good shape except for dash. You can get aftermarket covers so long as something is still they to glue it to. My power wagon dash is in great shape but it has a lot more metal in it.
Sometime I'd like to see you address one of these carburetion fiascos with one of the $50-$100 Chinese replica carbs sold on Amazon. Carburetors make me sad but that is partly 'cuz the well known brands want $400-$1200 for a new in box unit.

Man.. I'd love to meet the Hardass who bought a custom Dodge and said no to a radio.. he was like "No thank you. The sound of my farm animals is all I need in my heart.".
He must been the old school, oh no I am not paying $50.00 extra for a radio kind of guy.
😂😂😂
Or he was just broke but didn't want anyone to know. 😂😂 Can't see the radio from the curb.
Couldn't be distracted had to keep it running.
Thatd be me. I have 6 cars currently and no radio in any of them
I bought a 1985 D100 with a slant 6 and 4 sp manual shortly after I got out of the Army.
Good karma!
I love when you put out a video on bringing old rides alive again. A guy just can't get the same feeling with today's rides. It just isn't the same.
A real diamond in the rough there. Gonna be a sweet rig
I think so too
I have an 83 w150.
Heal up soon
Dad custom ordered a 1980 Vo-lar-ay as a going to school rig for us teenagers. Radio delete, A/C delete, manual windows, four door with that slant six! Everything a teenager in the early 80s didn't want. Perfect.
I'm glad yours got the
"custom" treatment as well! Lol
damn, why even delete the ac and the radio?
@@Davide0033 price and fuel?
I love these trucks! I've had an '85 1 ton, two '88's, an '89, and two '90's. Five 318's and one 360. Three 2WD and two 4WD. You can't kill them!
Yep, now I'm into Daks (scary transition years), nothin' newer
Yeah because they rust out faster then they can wear out showing why you had so many replacements of them
I don't care about 225 slant 6s. My favorite 6 cylinder engines are the 240 and the 300 straight 6 in Ford vehicles.
Tip: Secure a zip-tie around the can, and store the straw in the gap between the can and fastener.
I learned this from my Father, who was a Mechanic.
Boeing doesn't exactly have the best reputation, right now. Hopefully his stint was during better times.
Undeniably a great pro tip! Thank you for sharing, hopefully VGG gets to see this

You should get an award for being the best
He did get a gold play button....
Appreciate the kind words!
Odd there isint RUclips awards
I mean. The guy is trying to please everyone so bad he's bringing home junk Ford's, Dodge... Moses Sandles!
He came in at the right time on youtube and did it right. Derek is a OG on will it run car stuff.

Way back in the late 90s I had a best friend in Highschool that had a 1986 one of these that had a straight six in it , he passed away awhile ago but thank you so much for bringing all of those good memories of that back just now with this video.
Been looking forward to your new video all day. I just lost my job of 22 years yesterday and your content is one of the things that cheers me up. Thank you Derek for sharing the thing you love doing and for giving me something to look forward to during this difficult time. Keep up the good work fella.
You never know maybe you were holding on and it was time to let go. Hopefully you will find something better soon 🤓
Thanks Steve. 🙏🏼
I experienced the same thing after a 26 year career. Trust you will find something even better. One door closes, but the next opportunity will come as part of His plan.
Sorry to hear that, hope it all works out
@@TXAG81There is no plan it's all random based on choice you make.
Yes give her a good clean, new grille, tailgate, wheels & tires and you have a definite sweet “goin to town” rig 👍👍👍
That gas station was hit by a tornado I can’t remember how long it’s been, last time I stopped at that store was probably 5yrs ago, my dad lives about 20 minutes from there
That’s what I thought happened. It’s been a while since Ive been thru there so thanks for confirming my wonder.
Hey Derek I have always enjoyed watching your videos on fixing up trucks and stuff and came across this one at the end you were talking about giving it away to someone that cares about it I have been needing a truck for the longest I am 17 years old and I have been needing an old truck like this one I was going to ask to get your blessing to get this truck from you I will clean it the best way surprise you of what I can make good out of this truck
Thanks man
Was thinking the same! Be very careful with just the floor jack...
Yeah...good point. Especially using a floor jack on grass or dirt, they can shift . Wooden blocking works good, or at least one jack stand and a piece of 1/4 " metal plate to put it on.
Well said more blocking is better I'll use tires wooden blocks anything
My favorite part of your show is when you restore a vehicle that previously did not run.
Comment interaction things.
Algorithm stuff.
Thank you DB
Thanks Curtis
Down in the bleep boops here. got here pretty fast somehow, I don't know. Have a good day everyone
Me too man. Just had surgery. Can’t even find my motivation make it happener.
Thanks for watchin!
@ViceGripGarage What's the joke your grandfather use to tell? Us viewers really want to know
@@flyfly2427 I know the joke but I'm not going to say it either

You are only using a jack on grass. You could lose your leg doing that. I suggest once the tire is taken off you should slide it under the truck as a fail safe. It is just a susgestion and it could save your life or just you legs. I enjoy your videos a lot. Especially tbe MOPAR ones.
My first truck at 16 was an '81 D150 with the 225 and a four speed. Still got it 17 years later. I love those trucks.
1 owner farm truck. Stored in garage and 97,000 miles.
YES! 2 hour revival!
Probably run without knocking with fresh gas
And drive home, the best!!!
Going under the car with just the Jack and no stands gives me anxiety. I love it!
Happy to hear! I'll never change!
Two tone door panels. That's a bonus. Please slide the tire under the frame of truck before sticking your legs under the truck. Never trust the hydraulic jack.
Derek you an't right my brother. THANK YOU for making me smile. We love you and Jess and the family. Lets have fun with our automotive projects. God bless.
Thanks for another great episode!!!🎉 Special Thanks to all our soldiers and their families!!God Bless America!!!!
Revivals is what you are built on and we love it!!! Thanks Derek for getting back to basics it means a lot
It only took me watching 100 or so VGG episodes to notice that the vice grip in the opening sequence is the "V" in Vice. My life is complete.
Yelling at them birds had a feller crackin - up. have a good weekend Derek and family
Hey friend, I watch almost everything you put out, and my mom used to watch it all with me while she lived. Thank you so much for everything you put out, from some midwesterners who live in NJ. Thanks Derek.
The loose headlight was an advanced safety feature back in the day. The rattling noise it makes kept the driver awake.
Hot dang, Vice Grip Friday again. Looks like it's cold snack time.
Thanks for the information, inspiration and entertainment Derek.
drinking a wobble pop myself..lol
Preciate ya stopping in!
Thanks Derek! I like these old dodge's. Simple no frills pickup for work.
Thanks for watching
That gas station got taken out by the 2020 Tornado, it’s close to my home used to stop there for a cold snack and fuel all the time.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!, , but i guess i have too , im lookin right at it.... glad a guy is back to doing revivals!! Big fan of VGG❤
Yes!!!!! Start the weekend off right
Thanks for watching
The O'REILLY adds with Derrick are priceless it's the only add i don't skip 😂
Fix it! Paint it! Make it go fast and do some burn-outs and make that slant cool!
Love the show and keep the old trucks coming! Cheers mate 😼✌️
My favorite Friday activity 🥰
That wrench will never be seen again. 😂😂 I secretly love watching you with my husband. 🤫 don’t tell him.
Thanks for putting up with me
Last night I channelled the spirit of Vice Grip Garage, and drove 260 miles in a car with a dodgy gearbox, bad engine oil leak and a slipping clutch. It's stressful.
I had a dark green Dodge pickup back in high school ,it had a slant 6 ,them things run forever!!
Man I love the sarcasm and whit as usual.
Thanks Derrick for the Friday evening entertainment.
You’re my hero man.

So true. Our dash is split in several places. Ugly!
Weren't these redesigned dashes more robust? I know the pre-'81 dash plastic was really bad...
It's an amazing day when VGG is ding a classic Dodge Pickup. Love to see some more D-100s and power Wagoons!
Couldn't agree more!
Sometime I'd like to see you address one of these carburetion fiascos with one of the $50-$100 Chinese replica carbs sold on Amazon. Carburetors make me sad but that is partly 'cuz the well known brands want $400-$1200 for a new in box unit.
