We Bought A Basket Case Jeep SIGHT UNSEEN! Will It RUN AND DRIVE After Being Parked For Years?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 апр 2024
- A guy finally bought his first Jeep! The "wrong year wrangler"! We needed something to tow behind our old RV, so the obligatory Jeep was acquired. I bought this old wrangler out of North Carolina and had it towed back to my shop where my Son and I will attempt to repair it, and hopefully it start, run, and drive once again!

Hey Derek, I’ve commented before, but I wanted to make sure you saw it. It’s my senior year, and I wanted to honor you as a very influential person in my highschool career pushing me towards the trades, so I used “I’ll be dipped” as my senior quote (I gave you credit for it). Thank you for everything you do, and if you’d like me to change it please let me know
Man that's awesome 😂 I'm sure Derek doesn't mind. Maybe he will chime in and give you an even better quote to use 🤔
Good on you young man, goodluck In the trades!
That’s amazing. To top it off, when you graduate and walk up on stage, you should take a big sniff, look around at the faculty and say “It smells like Bengay and desperation”.
That’s awesome !! I’ve been saying “I’ll be dipped” for quite a while now because of Derek !! LOL
Congrats on your graduation!
lot of people are going to see a video of a guy fixing up a car but I see a guy being a really good dad.
🥲
I believe that’s called male toxicity these days.
Of the ones I frequently watch, as far as the kids go, this one and Sleeerdude are my favorites. I love seeing the kids getting involved and the how the dads encourage them.
He is an amazing Dad - couldn't agree more!
@@BrodeyDoverosx if you look outside youll see people dont call it toxic at all. Dont listen to the news and the online fighting, it isnt the case for real life
46:41 Father and Son workin on the rig. Darnit.... Sumthin in my peepers again. Anyone else missing their Dad right now? My hand's up. Awesome video as always. Take care of You and Yours.
Well said
Me and the wife been trying for kids for 6-7 years. No luck. Seeing you and your boy working together really pulls on the heartstrings. You're a lucky man.
If anything like friends who have been trying, it'll happen when you least expect it. One friend gave up entirely and within a year their lives got turned completely upside down - twins!
“Where’s the fire extinguisher? Uh… I think we used them all “. There’s gotta be a story somewhere in there 😂
There was one in the back of the jeep!
I was thinking the same thing. Reminded me of the conversations I had with my Dad about 45 years ago.
Best laugh out loud line of the month. If that's not true and he was just singing his dad, comedic gold. If it's true, just as funny.
@@PoniesNSunshine Yeah and it's old. So might be junk.
His smile when he said it😂
Hey derek. So a few things
1- the 4.2/4.0 series of engines do run at 210.
2- the rust in the windshield frame is normal. Quadratec has replacement frames for fairly cheap
3- the weber carb is an aftermarket replacement. Factory came with Carter YF computer feedback carbs, which is why there was an O2 sensor.
4- find a donor YJ or TJ with the 4.0 and steal the AX15 . The BA10/5 was an extremely weak trans, and getting parts fornthem now is almost impossible.
Keep up the good vidsos!
GREAT INFO!!!!
This fella is dead right. The straight 6 jeeps like 210 and the needle should stay just straight up and down when they’re cooling well.
Derek definitely needs to check out Quadratec. All the goodies
Even the jk's like the heat 212 is normal
I own an '06 (TJ) with the 4.0L and 6 speed. 3.73 Dana 44 axles (put in the electric lockers myself. People have offered me stupid money for it. I'd rather lose an arm.
I love that boy's inquisitive nature. He's soaking it all up, Dad, great job!
Thanks 👍
Bentley is pretty cool.
Bentley idolizes his dad and that's good.
@@garysimonson9593 Asks his boys if they are having fun or askes if they see what they learn as interesting. They respond very positively which is very impressive.
Derek, just one comment. You are the best dad ever. Sharing time with Bradley is one thing, but getting him time behind and in front of the camera, teaching him a skil?. Priceless.
Its cool to see Little Grip Garage helping out the smaller youtube channels like VGG with a collaboration.
😂😂😂
Hell yeah 👍
lol, little grip will surpass them all one day!!!
Well crying in the mud help me understand how VGG rated a collaboration with LVG...a fella sure is blessed to have such bright little humans to have around.
Shows which one of his Sons is the most like him. :D
A feller loves Fridays for three reasons.
1. The weekend
2. Cold wobble pops
3. VGG!!!!!!!!!
same here in the uk its nearly midnight but its a friday night ritual
Even warm wobble pops will do in a pinch. I forgot the ice for my beer, and am sitting here drinking 60 degree beer on a 45 degree day.
I hear ya. VGG, Bearded Mechanic, and S/T all put out new Vids on Friday.
@@Patrick_CooperOh well, after 4-5 it doesn’t matter anymore about whether they’re cool or not. Bottoms up.
As always Derek you and your family are just great it reminds me of me and my dad he was an electrician at Vandenburg and he would be gone 3 weeks at a time when he was home I followed him around fixing things with him had my own little tool box your boy Bentley reminds me being a little guy
Something about you guys fixing that Jeep with the rain.. it was a very relaxing watch... I vote for more garage during rain content.
"Where's the fire extinguisher?"
"I think we used 'em all."
GOLD.
😄
I love the way you talk to your kids, Derek. Always teaching but never condescending. You're the best car show on youtube, hands down!
My kids know I only scream at them when they’re holding a flashlight, and I don’t mean it 😂
Definitely the respect given is awesome. Teaching them to be great young men!
I work for jasper engine's and our factory in willow springs Mo. builds the 6 cyl AMC that has a 3 year 100,000 mile transferable warranty. Use that number on that tag and jasper should be able to tell you the mileage of the jeep when it was installed
I work in maintenance at HQ
I slowed down the video @26:00..only numbers I can read are "869914"...?
Where the fire extinguisher? I think we used them all. Lmao!
@@Bill-lg6hsI work at a Jeep shop that sells Jasper engines. This is the way!
That old 258 is bulletproof!!
Muscle car guy here. Got a Jeep on impulse, it’s much more fun than I ever imagined. You will enjoy it!
Man I wish I had a dad like Derek growing up, your sons are so lucky!
Bentley is the possibly the best mechanics assistant there is he always pays attention, asks all the questions and learns from his mistakes (very few) and he has the best teacher you could ask for ...I foresee great things for this young man.
I feel the same way, he’s a smart young man and seems pretty intuitive on top of that.
Hey Derek, just wanted to say thanks for keeping this show family friendly. It's one of the only car shows I feel comfortable watching around my little ones. I appreciate you!
My pleasure
I had same jeep last summer for a woods rig it was pretty fun for a guy cheap and way more better then a side by side and alot cheaper
Kid doesn’t know how lucky he is. You’re a good dad
Hey Derek, I just wanted to tell you that I'm so glad I came upon you channel, albeit two years ago, this is the first time I'm writing you. I just want you to know I recently purchased a 09 Wrangler as a hobby/Pre-Project retirement driver, and bang there you are with your Wrangler. I became inspired to wrench again now more than ever, it's been a few decades. Thank you. Keep the revivals coming, and keep on a wrenching.
Most badly adjusted family ever? NOPE.
Great to see a father and son so in-sync. The world needs about 300 million more families like this. You have my admiration and respect.
I love the kindness, the teaching , respect… Please and thank you!! It’s a fantastic example of a family filled with love and dedication to each other!!👍
Nah
Your youngest son Bentley is a really good human. All of them are sir. A huge help. I love the way you guys raise your kids. It's heartwarming to see. God bless you.
I know how to fix cars Derrick. What I’m not good at is making an environment where my kids like working on them with me. This is where you’ve helped me the most. You’ve helped me with small tasks I can give them when they ask if they can help and make them feel important. This is why I thank you.
51:45 Best line ever: "Where's the fire extinguisher?" "I think we used 'em all"
I loved your genuinely surprised reaction to Bentley's answers and comments. That little human is one smart little fella!
Totally agree!
I have a disabled son.
This is one of my favorite episodes. Working with Bently and watching you spark his brain is inspirational. I wish soooo much that I could have that relationship with my son. I love the family interaction and would love to see more.
Best wishes.
I hope you can find a suitable connection with your son through Lego, Meccano or even just pulling a lawnmower apart and putting it back together. I am the primary carer for my disabled brother and we have Great times together.
Square headlights are trash!
❤
My dad used to not do much with me because he didn't think I could do much with my disability. It took guys like Derek on the internet teaching me things so I can get in the shop and start doing it myself. There's always something you can do.
@@Studio23Mediathats the spirit. Keep it up and you'll go further than you ever imagined. Sending you good vibes all the way from Ireland.
What a bright and hard working young assistant you have!
All the dad’s out there who their kids are grown all know how special it is to watch this! Father and son relish every moment because it goes so fast!
I have been watching you for a few years and I have to say that the times I like the best when you do these things with your son's. Melts my heart. Great parenting at it's best!
100% agreed! What a great role model he is.
Couldn't agree more. Our favorite episodes are the ones where the kids are involved in the work too.
And your cats too!
That kid of yours is gonna be one heck of a good mechanic when he's done. Bentley seems to know the basics already and he asks the right questions to learn even more. I love watching you work with both the boys.
Thanks for watching!
@@ViceGripGarage Thank you for responding. And we'll continue to watch and hope to do so for many years.
At 52:50 It’s idling really high, said almost at the same time. This little fella has the best teacher..
Tubed in from Ontario. 🇨🇦
Bentley is the MAN. What a great helper. Won’t be long until he’s doing the “Run and Drive” videos on his own.😆. His own channel, “Little Grip Garage” has really grown.
Good job young man.
Great video!! Especially liked how patient you are with Brantley explaining everything to him, and teaching him your knowledge!! Safe travels with the Jeep! With a little more cosmetic work, I think you all are gonna have miles of smiles from this unit!!
Truly enjoy the banter between father and son. Simple questions and simple answers, no question too simple not to deserve an answer. This young man respects his dad’s knowledge without reserve. He knows that he has so much to learn from this man. Derek you’re doing a wonderful job with your boys. 👍👍🇨🇦
One on one time teaching and interacting will give the kid a serious advantage. The role of fathers is under-valued nowadays, but Derek's giving that boy the best kind of two-parent experience.
You can see the way he smiles at the little guy. Great bonding again.
“Look under those tarps, next to the vacuum attachment, next to the cool-aid. By the tire instructions, over here by the terminator X screen. By the 6 volt battery, by the rag. Underneath that. No, yeah”….. nailed it👍🏼
Really good to see young people take an interest in learning from their dad.
Had to pause the video to say I love how young Bently immediately recognized the drive shaft is short and the transmission is long, because dad has had him underneath long old GM boats his entire existence. Kid is going places, and with all the boomers retiring we're going to need guys like him desperately in the next 10-20 years. 👍👍❤
I just love seeing a young man turning wrenches and not looking at a phone all day, Thanks for Sharing this video and We hope you were all safe during the storm. Take Care Stay Safe.
Awesome father son moments
i love the father and son working together i really enjoyed the videos of you bently and bailey being together you are one heck of a dad and i hope to see you and bradely in one together unless i missed that one already awesome dad derek
Bentley is such a great young lad. Love your relationship working and teaching him so much.
Nice to see the youngest person you are responsible for. He is always a positive addition to the mission.
Derek I just want to say you and the channel are why I decided to jump on my own ‘66 mustang project. The videos seem like an hour or two to a fixed rig, but now I understand the hours of research, forums, learning and figuring out that goes into it. Keep on keeping on brother
I just love watching Bently and Derek work together. You are so amazing with your kids, this is memorys for life. Hope people are nice in the comments, so me and my kid can enjoy watch you guys forward. So many channels have to take their kids and family of youtube because of idiots commenting or even stalking.
51:47 when Bentley says "I think we used them all" had me lol
Everyone hates on the square headlight Jeeps, but as long as you have the inline engine and a manual, you get a decent Jeep.
It's not so much the headlights that jeepers hate. Well, yeah, it is a bit of it lol but it's mostly the suspension setup. The suspension is a lot lower from the factory. So it takes a lot more lift to get you where you want to be compared to the previous cj or the TJ/LJ that followed it.
@@nathanwoten6236Someone once told me that the ‘99 TJ was the first year Jeep got everything right. Have you ever heard that before?
I had an 04 TJ, and I can tell you it was the best I’ve had. What a unit.
@@nathanwoten6236.. it aint the ride height. The suspension is covered wagon technology so getting to where you want to be isn't a big deal.. it's definitely the headlights...lol
@@grinchlettenever head that.. but in my opinion the TJ is the last of the "good" jeeps.. love the V8 CJ's, but the 4.0 is damn near immortal
Love it Brother... I so get the "jeep folks are pretty proud of them" comments... happy to own a 2004, tow it behind my RV, you will not regret it! So EASY!
Jeeps are the ultimate offroad vehicle. If you just upgrade the engine, trans, driveline, axles, wheels, suspension, and shocks, you're basically ready to go.
As a Brit who watches hour upon hour of RUclips videos, thank you Derek for restoring my opinion of (and hope for) your amazing country. You are knowledgeable and wise, and clearly have an amazing family to whom you are a pretty solid father
Much like the UK, only the imbeciles get on TV here in the US.....They make us all look bad..
Just remember, for every idiotic American you see in media, there are thousands that you never hear a peep from. Same goes vice versa… it’s why I get so frustrated with people on the US side of the pond disparaging you all; any of our grievances against your gov’t, or the silliness that makes its way over here through media, shouldn’t be directly reflected upon all of you. It’s quite saddening how reactionary and simple minded people are becoming, though a quick history lesson shows it’s a disturbing cycle we’re in. Best of luck over there; I’m sure people aren’t any less caustic than they can be over here!
As another Brit who also watches RUclips videos - I agree with your comments 100%
Our government may be a disaster, but at least the country is nice!
I agree, Derek and his family are the real Americans, there are a few other very fine families in UTAH on similar paths that a man follows for the same reason,
Your compliments towards Bentley are absolutely priceless...your a good man Mr. D
Absolutely, the time spent he will never forget
I just wanted to say, you're an character! Very funny... keep up the good work!
You'r a good Dad there brother!! I did this with my kids (now 40yrs old) back in the 90's on 2 Ramblers, they still have them.,
As a new Dad, it's great seeing you interact with your son. It seems like such a healthy and comfortable relationship. Dad goals for sure.
I love the way you’re teaching your son Derek.
I appreciate that!
Wonderful seeing you and Bently having father/son time! Bentleys always up for helping his Dad.
Man.. that's just beautiful how you've passed knowledge along and built those memories for both of you. This modern time we find ourselves in you don't see that enough. He'll look back at those rainy nights out in the garage working on a Jeep with the old man with love and appreciation. Also.. thumbs up on rockin the mullets. The me from late 80s would fit right in lol
Your ability to go through an engine and drivetrain quickly and know exactly what it needs, to run and drive, sets you apart from the rest. Amazing job man.
Thanks so much!
Derek, You sir are a great father raising great kids. Deep respect from one great father to another.
Period!
Even the cat is chill!
I thought the exact same thing, he is polite, gives advice and doesn't get mad at mistakes. Everyone should have a father like that.
but unfortunately, most fathers are not like him...
It warms a fella’s heart to see another fella work on a vehicle with his boy. Looking forward to doing this someday with my son. He’s only one, but I’m taking notes on how Derek calmly teaches and is encouraging throughout the whole project. Thanks for being an example for us all!
😊
Always tell him how proud you are of him and tell him you love him often. My dad was 72 when he passed and I was 45. .I never remember my dad telling me he loved me. :(
Love watching your videos for your beautiful commentary and use of grammar, and now especially for watching you and your son interact. He'll make a fine young man and you have at least 50% of the responsibility for that. Well done!
always good to see the apprentice asking tons of questions and the pop answering them all matter of factly...kind of makes an old feller like me remember the good old days when i was the apprentice
I have a 1993 YJ with the 4.0 and 5 speed. They are simple and easy to wrench on. No laptop, no scan tool. Just good old fashioned nuts and bolts.
Jurassic Park
My buddy had one in high school in the mid 90s and he beat the snot out of that poor thing and it never left us stranded
Great video. Best part.....you teaching Bentley and just being a cool dad with him. Those are the memories I have of my dad long passed...those are the ones Bentley will keep as well. Would love to see you in Michigan.
Fantastic! Get the son involved.... .important life skills. Always amazed how calm you remain, Derek! Time to remove those hideous stripes and the 4x4 badge and get some graphics on that says "Wrongyear" instead of Wrangler down the side of the hood.
I love to see Derek and the kids doing father and son stuff. Reminds me of me and my dad. Those memories will last forever.
I remember my dad teaching me to work on our old '55 Chevy station wagon. He first taught me to change brake shoes on drum brakes. From then on, I was in charge of the brakes. I learned a lot from my dad & I miss him dearly. Cheers from eastern TN
Dad taught me curse words 😂
I just bought an '84 CJ7. You're going to love it!
You are a great dad and your son is doing a great job good sir. Always enjoy the channel... 👍🐸
I like how he says that behemouth battery is 180lbs before effortlessley hauling it off while not even stopping dialogue. Derek Ver Magnussen over here.
Watching you work on your cars with your kid puts a big ol’ smile on my face. Rewarding to watch where so much on TV is causing us pain and misery this offers me healing from those wounds. Thank you.
That young man just melts my heart ❤️
That rain sound…. Ooofta May!! I’d be asleep in second if I camped out in that barn, we don’t get that sort of rain in 🇬🇧 it’s just constant meh!. Sounds awesome. Bentley is such a cool dude.
There is a patience to mechanical work that my father did not have and I have taken it upon myself to finger it out and have used fixing and rebuilding as a metaphor for recovery from brain injury. You are so blessed with your demeanor and teaching with your sons. All parents are just figuring things out and you folks engage your kids very well with love and guidance, Thanks for sharing that with others. Perhaps the world will slowly shift back to more of that moral authority one video at a time. God Bless!
What I really appreciate about your relationship with your boys is that each teachable moment is a true teaching moment. No condescension, no belittling, just honest education in the moment. For all your sarcasm and fun humor, you clearly care about raising those kids right. Good for you, and good for society :)
He is a great person and a great father who will teach he’s sons how to do things. As his father did for him. Love the show every week
I love the episodes with your boys because it reminds me of working with my dad on our project truck. They’ll treasure those memories for the rest of their lives, trust me on that. We’re still working on it, so many more memories will be made.
The fact that your boy can find 'random' items from nowhere means you are being an excellent teacher! Yep, all that messing around with stuff - it's definitely a Jeep thing!
I'm a Dutch computer guy with no affiliation to cars in any way or form. And I've seen almost all your video's. I really love this channel!
Its a great way to learn about cars
Very true to see farther and son working together very great
I love that Bentley is helping. Such great dad and son time. I hope you have him wearing hearing and ventilation protection. A shop vac can damage hearing within a few minutes and spew out a lot of fine particulate matter.
I grew up working on cars with my Dad holding a flashlight, grabbing a wrench, scrapping gaskets, wiping down tools and searching for nuts or bolts in the junk box.. I learned a lot about cars in the process. Watching you work with your boys brings back good memories...I miss my pop.....thanks for the videos.....
10 minutes in and I can feel that Derek isn't excited about Jeeps and tbh those are my favorite episodes, where the derision is genuine
Pretty funny comments for sure from Derek.
Maybe someone should convince him to buy a Subaru next 😂
NO to the Subaru idea.YUCK!
These square headlight jeeps aren't a true jeep in My opinion. They still ok . But newer jeeps aren't near as cool or tough. Early 80 to mid 80s is where they went down hill. Not being a hater. The new ones are cool for looks. But toughness. Not so much
That was awesome to see the old
crew back
My wife and I really enjoyed the basket case jeep. Very cool to see you and Bentley in the shop together . Great content.
Had to make a second comment, Derek…. @43:28 This touched a fellers heart. The absolute love and pride that you show for all of your sons is just amazing. Just had to point that out. Stay blessed, my friend.
Not only is this a good revival video on cars, this is also an awesome father figure video. A dad here who is really enjoying the content and taking notes. Thank you so much for the help!
Hats off again Derek, you take us back to the day when a man doesn't need the best look'n rig. A man can do things with older items they just need to be reliable especially when the family is involved. The young man is getting some of the best life lessons that he will carry for ever. God Bless and keep it going.
Hey Derrick, good to see a young fella so keen to help out. He is a good little offsider
1 second in. I see rectangular headlights. Yes. A YJ project from VGG. Lets go.
I'm a CJ owner but still have a fondness for the YJs. Hell, even the TJs are good Jeeps. But I would never own anything beyond the TJ. The last of the newer model Jeeps will be carried to the boneyard behind a TJ.
I owned an 89 YJ for about 2 years before my family outgrew it and I had to sell it. But I fell in love with it.
And I agree with you, the TJ is definitely the last of good Jeeps.
And don't get me started on those 4 door things that call themselves a Jeep.
I’ve been waiting for a Jeep video. Even better that it’s a YJ.
I love the YJ's though I never have owned 1 yet - still looking! I wonder if ya can take a TJ running gear n mate it to a YJ body/Interior? That would be great!
Thank you, Derek for all you do. I recently had a stroke caused blindness at age 48. I was a big fan of your videos before I went blind and now even more I look forward to seeing them every Friday no pun intended just a good old Saskatchewan warm boy, I think you’ll love the Jeep. Have fun and stay safe.
I am from Saskatchewan as well and I am 48. Love VVG and wish he would come up here and save one of the numerous old vehicles rotting in the tree and hills. I owned a 87 YJ and it was the worst vehicle I ever owned.
Sorry for your misfortune fellow Canadian. I’m 70 years old and bedridden. Keep your chin up friend.
I absolutely love that you are including and teaching your kids usable skills. My daughter who is going into Mechanical Engineering was floored at how many kids in her class can't use simple hand tools in her Skills USA and Robotic teams. Keep up the good work!!!
I love those moments when he's working on a car and one of his young humans asks a question. Derek explains things so well and presents things in a way to make them think about how it could work. Watching the next generation soak up the knowledge becomes more beautiful the more my personal odometer rolls. Great stuff VGG!
In 20 years Bently will be one of the last few who will know how to work on old cars.
The Father son bonding is great to see, more kids need to get out in the shop and learn before we are all gone to learn from.
I’ve had 2 wranglers and they run at 210 degrees no matter what. Glad to see you’ve done a Jeep. Good Luck and Thanks for all you do
All mine ran at 210. I got scared when I saw 215 and up
I was about to type this. All mine in those years range ran that same temp.
@@JackOSUrulz @jeremyspurlock6636 @brianwhitman5195; contrary to common, popular "belief", false ideas, views, incorrect, improper, invalid, misleading claims, 'information', disinformation, mal-information,, misconceptions the correct proper, optimum operating temperature for coolant, pressure system is 210-220 F/99-105 C 🙂
The automobile manufactures had set their thermostats very low within early designs; they used water only, then added pressure to increase boiling temperature; later coolant with higher boiling and lower freezing temperatures. gradually through extensive SAE testing, verification, the knowledge for optimum operating temperatures for maximum efficiency, minimal wear were measured to be consistent; gradually the manufactures increased the thermostat temperatures, operating temperature standards to match the established, known SAE data from 1972-4, especially with computer, ECM, ECU, control. My first auto-mechanics instructor showed and taught us the SAE measured data in 1975.

@@MarianoLu just to add to all this (I replied above yours a bit ago), I was thinking it had something to do with the small size of engine bay and the heat build up. At least, somewhere in the back of my mind I remember something to that effect. I’m 50 now, first Jeep was back in high school, a 1991 Wrangler. After that, I had many, as I alluded to in another post on this video. If I could have owned every single iteration of Jeep ever made, I would lol. Oh, he'll be a home wrench at least! He gets it.
I must admit, you handle your product placements much more gracefully than most channels.
You were cracking me up. I've done that a million times talking about the rotor button being left off. You're a good dad. And yes the inline 6 Jeeps run at 210 temp all day long. I have a TJ and it is really happy at that temp. That's actually a really clean YJ you found, looks to be in good condition.
