Brad Smith was born in 1939 in Youngstown, Ohio. He began taking flying lessons at age 15 and already had his private pilot's license before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 31, 1961. He was later selected for Naval Cadet Flight Training where he received his commission and wings in 1964. He was assigned to Attack Squadron VA-76 in February 1965, flying off the Aircraft Carriers USS Roosevelt, America, and Enterprise. Smith began flying combat missions in the A-4 Skyhawk in November 1965. He was forced to eject over North Vietnam while flying his 77th combat mission on March 25, 1966. The North Vietnamese captured LT Smith and held him as a Prisoner of War for the next 2,516 days, until his release during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973. After his return, Smith went back on flying status in the A-7 Corsair II. He flew from the USS Saratoga from 1974 to 1977, seeing duty off the coast of Lebanon. From 1979 to 1981, he flew from the USS Coral Sea in the Indian Ocean, including being on alert during the rescue attempt of the hostages held in Iran. Smith served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer and as a Weapons System Test Pilot at the Pacific Missile Test Center at Point Mugu, California, from 1981 until his retirement from the Navy on August 31, 1985. After retirement, Brad worked for the defense contractor Lear Siegler before starting a Stained Glass business in Florida.

Quick Silver has to be a huge thrill no matter how many time Scott flies it!
My dad and friends set up a small factory in SE Missouri building the first gyro copters. They built their first one an towed it behind a car to learn how to fly it, then put an engine on it. He stalled one in a turn and crashed it, but It didn't belong to him, so had to pay to replace it. The blade busted the football helmet he was wearing but he only got a lot of bruises and a concussion. They were wide open in those days. They had only built a few at that point, but they shut it down due to possibly lability issues.

Congratulations Cleetus on owning an airport! Very happy for you. My mom & dad are Army Veterans. Dad kept his pilot skills up flying out of Servia Indiana on a Grass Strip. After the owner past, kids sold the place and the runways plowed up. Dad moved his plane to Wabash. Roy, the owner and his family lived at the airport. Part of his home was the FBO. Building your home, at your airport reminded me of that part of my childhood. I have land lots in Florida around Cape Coral. One is near an airport and was thinking about building a Winter home there someday. If you decide to sell land for airport homes, maybe I'll sell Cape Coral lots and build at your airport. One of my daughters lives in Titusville and next time I fly down for a visit, maybe can stop over at your airport. Congratulations again and fly safe!

Last month they had a B-17, a B-25 and a very rare 1 of 1 still flying P-51-A Mustang doing several Take off and landings. Last week was 9 different WWII planes, P-38, P-51-D, F-8-F, TBM Avenger, Dauntless Dive Bomber, P-40 and the list goes on. I'm very excited for you and your airfield, enjoy the dream my friend.

He was 99 & his wife was 92, both were in great health which I wish I would have taken the opportunity to sit down and record him. He said there's no "Ejection" seat so when he was shot down he had to roll the canopy back, squat down in the seat and jump with every bit of strength you had because there was an antenna on the tail that would catch onto your suit so you had to clear it. They trained for this just in case it happened, he parachuted down into a field which he was instantly caught by the Germans. I remember him saying he only had a 1911 pistol on him which they took & he spent 6 months in a POW prison before he & the others was liberated. That was about 15 years ago & I'm a huge history buff so it sat with me and man how I wish I'd taken the time to record him and listen to more of his stories!!

Moved to Cape Coral, Fl in '79, built and flew a couple of different gyros, started but did not finish a q-2, got old and too stupid with health problems to continue to carry a medical, a mildly disabled vet from '67-69 one of six brothers who served, a gold star family member to our youngest brother 1lt Joseph kia 29 Jan 69. Cleet, you and your team put out QUALITY content video after video. Each one earning more subs and more ad revenue, that allowed you to eventually INVEST that earned income into ventures like Freedom Factory and Motion. You bet on yourself dude and you did it! You and your team earned this success and its cool to be along for the journey. Hell. Yeah. Brother.

Couldn't have been a better man to purchase it. Would likely have been developed into housing otherwise. Luckily it's much further from Bradenton to avoid the sprawl for longer than the track will. He will no longer be AS close to the track, but still not far.

Been a fan since the beginning. This was an emotional video for me. My father was a commercial airline pilot of over 45 years. About 3 years ago he passed away. About 2 months before hand he told me about your channel and how much he loved it. I was so happy that he found the same love for your channel that I had. Keep on rocking brother. We all love you

I myself was starting to get choked up when the awesome gentleman was talking about getting shot down and the a prisoner of war and when he said he came back when he was released you seen him sit down because he was getting choked up and the water in his eyes is from what a real man stands for. They don't make that way anymore. Sadly the new generation of kids don't even give our elders any respect and that kills me because this country was build on tough men that fought for our freedoms we have today. So God Bless him and his family for he never giving up and held on for 7 years until they let him go. Now I have military background but this isn't about me so I'll stick to him. You know when you get captured and held for 7 years and your thinking the entire time they don't care about me enough to come get me back and when he gets released he wants to stay and keep flying. A real life hero and your father as well my friend. My grandpa and my dad and all my uncles all served in the Marines as I did also. I thought Iraq and Afghanistan was bad,but these old timers fought in Vietnam. My dad never once could talk to me about what he did and seen over there. And when I became a man and I knew exactly why because you want to leave that in your past. Sorry for the long post buddy I do apologize

It'd really be up to him, a lot of Vietnam vets don't like sharing too much. My grandpa did 3 tours and never once said a word about it.

@@octane613 obviously. My grandfather also did 4 tours and is a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient. I heard for the first time 4 years ago how he earned his Silver Star. Very aware of the difficulty talking through their experiences can be, but Brad said in the video he’d love to share more stories. Just commenting that I hope they are able to capture what Brad would be ok with

Dude this is the best video you've made because men like Brad are what make what make this country great. 6 years and 11 months is something I could never fathom, and I am a OEF/OIF that had to retire medically due to injuries from an IED. There's not even a comparison to what I experienced, seen, and heard of happening in my generation and it is extremely humbling to hear him speak of his time as a POW that was longer then my entire time in the service. I am very thankful for Brand.

The things that Brad and the other P.O.W.went through at the Hanoi Hilton are insane. Those guys are truly some of the most resilient men of all time. One of Brads fellow P.O.W. Charlie Plumb wrote a book called "I'm No Hero" that tells the heroic and horrific accounts of their times in Vietnam. If you don't have time to read, episode 76 of the Jocko Podcast does a great job of hitting the highlights. Thank you for your service and welcome home sir!

Loved seeing the Lake Aircraft 200 EP at Franks hangar. I grew up at the airport in NH where my dad was a Mechanic for Lake Aircraft and I turned 1 at the airport in Kissimmee, Florida where my dad lived for a year to bring up that location. I imagine there is still a handful of LA's around Florida given the history. I always hoped someone would buy the rights who would bring them back into production again. Landing on the water is something special!
