In the Marines I worked as a logistics clerk in the motor T department of an artillery battalion. There were at least three parts on a Humvee that always broke down: the glow plugs, starters, and alternators. The CV joints had to be replaced often as well. Those Humvees would break down while parked. Our battalion was so underfunded that often the mechanics would go out on night missions and "acquire" parts off of trucks from the better funded battalions around us in Camp Pendleton. Wow this is such a different experience to buying a used military vehicle from an auction off the German army. Like, people in Germany always make fun of the army because apparently they have a lot of broken equipment, helicopters that aren't allowed to fly and guns that deform on full auto (G36). But: they take really good care of their vehicles! My parents bought a 1978 MAN mil gl 5 ton offroad truck and that thing is probably the most reliable vehicle they own. The army did regular inspections on these vehicles, replaced broken parts and made sure everything works. There were new parts with the label still on installed just a year before auctioning it off. And that truck already was 35 years old when my parents bought it. But you turn the key, press the push button start and the engine immediately runs, every time.
I immediately started thinking about Gelendewagen which is the Wolf from Heer. These are insanely reliable. Expensive, sure. But not much more costly than those here. Anyway, the Polish army has a Toyota Hilux and a Ford Ranger. Both were modded for the military. Having reliable modded, civilian market 4x4s is a good thing.

Everything from simple things like glow plugs, to engine controller, to head gaskets/heads.. These vehicles are a blast, but you need to have a large wallet and a lot of time on your hands to keep them working and maintained. The vehicles you guys bought have a leg up on what I have. 4 speed transmission (I've got no overdrive), and the turbo on the one so you can go faster then about 60. I hope you guys had a blast driving them back. One of these days I really want to pick up one of the newer style 4-speed & trubo units, but so far haven't found one I'm willing to spend the money on.

I worked with veterans for years as a commercial truck mechanic. Those guys hated Humvees. Also we had a local company that used milsurp deuces. One of those guys was almost brought to tears the day he had to fix one.
SO many flashbacks. Having one of my joes in the convoy leave the truck with the transfer case in L, cant figure out why the truck is ROARING for 2 hours and can barely make it into the double digit MPH's and its always something wrong on top of the operator. This is going to be my favorite series of your channel. Almost 30 years I have been with these vehicles and I have gone through just about everything you have... but I just call the wrecker to come get the truck which could be a day or 2 later. So many hours of my life stuck in a random parking lot on a convoy due to break downs. From deuce and half's, CUT-V's Hummers and HEMMITs.
I was just thinking what Ethan said, "What is wrong with our brains that this is fun." Being resourceful, diagnosing weird unknown issues and succeeding is quite fun!
Former 91B/H8 here. Worked on humvees for nearly a decade. I wish I had access to the same tools, talent and budget you guys possess. Our trucks would have been tip-top.
You two have the most capable 4x4 on earth! The UniMog is an amazing off road truck. You had no worries going down or up anything you may through at that rig.
Hmm. No plates, registration, or insurance. For me, I would have made it about 1 block- before getting cuffed and stuffed, with my vehicle impounded, never to be seen again.
as a military enthusiast watching this video amazes me how cool and powerful the humvees are, i find it funny that three non military serving civillians buying a us government military vehicle in an auction well i enjoyed watching the video this deserves a like and a subcribe!!!
Agreed! A reasonable example (like a 6-7/10) in my area is usually low 5 figure territory, like 10-12k on the low side. And a 6.5 in my area, a turbo one, for a good running one (sub 200k) is usually 1k or less. As for the rest of the parts, I know a guy that had a handful of them before they got more popular in the area, and we had a hell of a time finding parts for the rest of it back then, I figure that's gotten a bit better though
Those H1 hunmers will always be a guys dream project... They're gorgeous 😍 Also Wills energy is always so wholesome and that little bottle of Tabasco reminds me of the good ol MRE days in the Air Force 😅
This video is badass. The puzzle piece size analogy was apt. Gotta create a challenge to grow ourselves. Your muscles don't get stronger by lifting the same weight or going the same distance. Our ability to conquer challenges in life progression needs the same training. Keep up with the kickflips - almost there.

I literally have two brand new 6.2 l diesel flex plates sitting in the back of my shop. Also the starter support bracket... If you don't know what you're messing with these motors can be a huge problem. The injection pump fuel shutoff is a bit*h as well. I know with my m1009 it wouldn't go very fast cause the vacuum hose rotted off to the trans .
$5000 is an awesome deal, you guys did good! Truthfully, I've had two of these trucks and once you work out the kinks, they are some of the most reliable trucks you can get (not joking). They will take a lickin and keep on kickin. But you let any rig sit on a lot for months and months after a lifetime of abuse and questionable maintenance and you are going to find some major kinks lol.
I love thinking of the stories each one of these has lol. Every fix is a mechanic doing the bare minimum in the most creative way Edit: The transmission not being bolted in and then the car dying as soon as its bolted in reeks of a mechanic going "I don't know why it works, but it does" LOL I love it

This blew me back to the past. The NA Diesel was a solid motor, just not very fast or quick at all. I was a 63B Light wheel mechanic back in 1995 until 2001, right before the Turbo Diesel to our unit. such a simplistic vehicle to work on and fairly reliable except for the oil leaks and such. So easy to work on but a pain to work on too.
I just want to say I love you guys. I really look forward to your uploads every week. Like you bring a little extra joy to me and I just wanna say thank you.
When i came up with the design of my mini fishing pontoon, i couldn't settle on any single layout design, I found some of those quick-connect flush mount low-pro seat pedestal deck plates/ bases. I took then and laid them out into qrid-style layout. Next i picked out my seats and items who's location was undecided, then added the male side posts to their undersides. This gave me the ability to move each component and seat layout around them click them into place giving me the power to take or add stuff depending on the day's use and passengers. I also mad the handrails removable like on a stake-body flatbed. I also added some of the plain drop-in storage bins into the floor between the pontoons. I ended up with a 12' tiller-steered 15hp floating fishing deck, that i could be rearranged. It had 2 manually deployed awnings as well in case i wanted to use it for fun with the kids .

"thats because im good at LYING!" Got me good 😂
Road trips with mates are the best and you get to come home with a present.
Good on ya guys...
Awesome to watch. 🥳👍🇦🇺
Ladies and gentlemen!! The video we have been teased and anticipating!!!!!
You boys are living the dream... thanks for bringing us along for the ride. From one Will who loves old Subarus to another, keep it up. Grind Hard is the best channel on the RUclipss
This was awesome! Your brains work exactly as intended and release rewarding chemicals when solving problems. This is what advanced our civilisation. Bravo!
Holy hell this is the earliest I've ever been to something that wasn't my fault! 😂
yeah i just clicked off fullscreen and it says posted 4 minutes ago. am i the only one disappointed that there isnt more already. so awesome
Ethans willingness too tackle any project and his can do, "I Cannot Be Defeated And I Will Not Quit" Attitude never ceases to amaze me! As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇
Years ago I mentioned how nice it would be to hang around with Ethan, and now I feel the same way. Fame and money has not changed ether of us.
Also if you go on the diagnostic port by the shifter and jump points S and T with a wire it will start without the switch
its crazy how far Will has came on here. he went from NEVER being on camera to being one of the main characters!
And his phone is still in his back pocket . You can't teach a young dog old dog tricks Dog !
Yea, Wills a jem. Realy makes the show.
"What is wrong with our brains that this is fun?"
So relatable
Same lmao, love a challenge
Edwin killed it on the music on this 💪🏻
he always has me jammin, but i agree he extra killed it this time!
U wish I knew what jam that was around 18:00
29:00 split the converter off the flex plate and use some 14 inch 3/32'' E8018 to weld it back together thru the gap... field mechanic, done in 5 minuets.
Hmmwv owner and tech here. In watching your video and I'm like omg the issues. I'm sure you have done so already but hit up the free thenical manuals and matain the portal hubs before a wheel falls off. Best of luck guys.
"it's like doing a puzzle with big pieces"
Agreed, Will. I usually just work on cars and light duty trucks, but I venture into a few medium duty trucks, and agricultural tractors, etc, and it's more or less just bit puzzles.
Grindhard out of the woods is going to have to be a regularly occurring part of this channel because this is some awesome content! It’s gonna be interesting seeing how many people recognize you guys…
If you've ever served and had to maintain your hmmwv then you know....that these things break just by looking at them wrong! hahahahaha
Just think, everything built by the lowest bidder!
At least they don't throw their tracks off lol
22:34 That little guy came out of an MRE
Thanks for sharing your adventures and not editing out the mistakes. It brought back many memories back in the Air Force, trying to make the best of bad situations. Salute!
Epic...wish I was there. Your enthusiasm in the face of adversity is infectious.
I'm always blown away by Ethan's innate strength. Bro probably doesn't even lift.
Farm boy strength😊
ANT MAN ETHAN! 😂
Im built similar, but smaller than Ethan, he's got probably at least a couple inches and a couple dozen pounds on me at the least, but us lean fellas definitely tend to be a bit deceiving in strength. I for example only weigh 130 on a good day, but I haven't seen 7% body fat or more, ever.
It's all muscle, yo, and it's effective!
Not trying to downplay Ethan's strength, I called him ant man for a reason, I intend it to be commentary. He is for sure one strong dude and I would never EVER want to do anything like arm wrestle or try to actually fight him. It's dudes like him you gotta worry about. Lol
@@goosenotmaverick1156 yea man ants are one of the lb for lb strongest creatures on earth.
I'm not bragging but I'm the same way lol. 130 5'8 and can dead lift 300 lbs and curl over 100
@@everettstormy now I'm gonna have to check what I can do. I know for sure I can do 250 ish, just by objects I've lifted, not sure how much I could do realistically, but I have a little left to go I think.
It's wild, I believe you, but I bet someone chimes in and says we are full of it. 😂
The soldiers that last drove them probably rigged them to not run right ,unless they put certain parts back in place ,so nobody got to far from them in case someone "Acquired" their ride .😅🇺🇲😎👍
You over estimate the intelligence of motorT. Don't worry, they also do that.
I worked with veterans for years as a commercial truck mechanic. Those guys hated Humvees.
Also we had a local company that used milsurp deuces. One of those guys was almost brought to tears the day he had to fix one.
Having been in for 14 years, its weird to hear people geek out about Humvees
The feeling of accomplishment is such a great one!!
these types of videos always hit the right spot
As a person that once had a spooly humvee i could say that your humvees are actually in good shape
Totally impressed! Changing out a flexplate on a 4wd hummer in a Walmart parking lot without a shop filled with the right tools and equipment.
Will’s panda shirt is Premium 👌🏽😆
Imma refer to Will as Panda Bear from now on (if'n you know Shax, you know) 😁♥️
Those tiny Tabasco bottles out of MRE packs are so cool.
Been so hyped for this!!!
Finally right?!?
@@GrindHardPlumbingCoI remember you talking about it at the freedom 500!
Mad respect guys awesome roadtrip
اشوفكم يالي جايين من سناب صالح
as a military enthusiast watching this video amazes me how cool and powerful the humvees are, i find it funny that three non military serving civillians buying a us government military vehicle in an auction well i enjoyed watching the video this deserves a like and a subcribe!!!
Been a while since ive been this excited for a series on youtube.
Pahahahah, dudes paying for the stuff that they already paid.
it's hilarious that our tax dollars pay for these to be made and then we have to pay more to get our hands on some of them.
You beat me to it bro..😂 nothing to see here just 4 guys working on 2 hummers in Walmart parking lot....
government just trying to get a little back for the taxpayer
That’s pretty cheap for a humvee
They're gorgeous 😍
Also Wills energy is always so wholesome and that little bottle of Tabasco reminds me of the good ol MRE days in the Air Force 😅
Y'all put some seasoned military mechanics to shame. Outstanding job, guys!
Be cool see you make a submaraine out of one
It would be amazing... if u learn how to type correct
Not first
I think you might have been. Only comment I can see
Nice
Bruh this I know it's only one extra word, but this is so much better than just "first" 😂
You got my vote man, and you're first for me too 😎
Bro u got grindhard reply! That's fire 🔥 your basically famous now!
The boys look so thrilled!! The excitement is real. Big fan of the realness on your channel 🤝
32:14 Loving what y’all do whilst doubling as entertainment is what makes your brain say *FUN* Ethan 😄
i find it very funny how the army can just spit out broken trash and the people will be dying to get it
ethan really had a lot of fun on this trip.
There’s something I find very exciting about these military surplus auctions. I myself lust after that Stewart & Stevenson thingie.
I absolutely love these types of adventures, the unknown, that test you and your buddies mechanical enginuity. That being said, I would 💯 be right there jumping back into the Humvee with Ethan at 4a.m. 🤙
I love this episode, it has a old-school Top Gear/Grand Tour feel to it. Great job guys!
i dont understand how that truck humvee was even moving with that flexplate.
Ethan’s an absolute g for putting the straw in camera man’s drink
In true Ethan fashion everything that could have possibly gone wrong went wrong but he still figured it out an got it going without defeat🤘🏽
Was a 31U (Signal) 1997-2003 and drove these all over Fort Riley. Seeing this is bringing back all sorts of memories! :D
This is a throwback. I used to work in an armored truck and one of my stops was the commissary at this Barstow Logistics Base.
I love thinking of the stories each one of these has lol. Every fix is a mechanic doing the bare minimum in the most creative way
Edit: The transmission not being bolted in and then the car dying as soon as its bolted in reeks of a mechanic going "I don't know why it works, but it does" LOL I love it
I’m new to this channel and my gosh do I love it. It’s like watching my brother work on things.
You guys are doing stuff that some of us only dream of doing. God Speed and have fun all the way home.
This is right up my alley of FUN. You all are truly livin' the dream.
Hats off to your editor and film guy as well. I like the drone footage in all of your videos and would love to come and fly with you all if I ever make it up your way. 🤣Thanks for the great content
-Your Jack of all trades, Master of None Neighbor from Ridgefield, WA.
The struggle to get the door closed reminded me of my old '74 Jeep CJ-5. Good times 😄
