$20 for lunch and $40 for a room in a cheap part of Mexico means you're being charged Gringo prices not local prices. I have friends who spend a couple of months in winter in Mexico, and they pay a fraction of that. One is originally from there, so they clearly pay local prices.
If you wanna eat cheap processed food and stay in a shack, sure.. Otherwise 40$ a night is very decent if you want a private room with ensuite bathroom. :)
@@joenandamalie those friends are vegan and extremely healthy, and they pay a lot more to eat organic in the UK. So I doubt they suddenly eat cheap rubbish when in Mexico. I personally would call their bluff next time youre paying and say that's Gringo price and you want the real price. You will never know until you try. So just make a game of it and have fun asking. Don't ask, don't get !

Wow, what a trip! I got laid off in 2011 and traveled around Mexico in a bus (up from Guatemala) and ended up in gto. I started my online business in the 3 years I lived there, right down the street from Bar Fly. Shout out to Cafe Tal! That's where I worked every single morning while I built my business. Now I live in Southeast Asia since 2016, traveling all over the world. Guanajuato City is such a gem. No car needed and cheeeeap rent. $240 right in the center of town. I'm gonna get a residence visa in Mexico soon and I'll spend my time mostly in Condesa and Gto city. My two favorite spots in Mexico. Thanks for the vid, love it!
@@WizardsPath-if5oq GTO is like right in the middle of Mexico, which is a very long bus ride from Tijuana. Best to fly into Leon, unless you're on a budget. If so, take the bus, which is cheap, pretty comfy and you get to see the phenomenal scenery the whole way.

As a Mexican, I'm on the same exact situation americans are: can't afford decent food nor housing, living in Guanajuato as a student has been one of the best experiences in my life, however, it's been also the hardest. The views are just beautiful, but I'm literally starving lmao
I mean to be honest it depends on your accent is chicanos in America don’t speak Spanish in our native accents sometimes people mistake me for a Colombian/Salvador sometimes depends on the season I guess and a Central American accent can cause a lot of trouble they littered robbed a lot of cities on their way through.
I personally recommend the city of Oaxaca as well, it’s on the way to Puerto Escondido and Hautulco and some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen! Cheap and it’s not small!
@amchapo oh ya, but the millions of Latinos going across the US border is fine right? Mexico and Latin America are very lucky that people with money are coming into their country and raising the standards of living here. The US, Canada and Europe are not so lucky with the migration they are experiencing.
@@RedroomStudios Right, those with money arrive and as a consequence, the standard of living raises. Going the other way, the opposite is true, those without the education, skills, or resourses (they are the public charges) are lowering the standard of living for the "lugarenos".
I looked there, but it's expensive. How do you find a house there for a good price? Do you prefer it more than a place like San Carlos that is right at the beach?
Guanajuato is amazing! My son and I went there a couple of years ago. We were visiting family in Michoacán. Decided to run over to Guanajuato and check it out. What a beautiful city! Definitely going back.
I've been to Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende but I fell in love with Guanajuato the moment i arrived that stunning place. I have good memories there, it has a special place in my heart.
I lived in Tijuana Mexico for 3 years I lived on $50 a week food the fish was 275 a kilo that's $2.75 for two and a half pounds the beef was $2 a kilo I ate fine my rent was $400 a month and that was near the beach beautiful apartment
I was an expat from 2009-2016 in HCMC, VN (SAIGON, VIETNAM). I lived with my GF outside the city on $1000/Mon. Then my VA retirement came in a yr later. Let's say we were very comfortable then. Got a 2+1 highrise Condo in D5 for $500/Mon secure parking. Our living room even had a big fish tank. Endless City Vistas. And...5 min to D1 Tourists/Expat everywhere. Good food/shopping.
Why did you move and to where? Sounds like you enjoyed it. Hopefully you didn't bring her back here where she could learn to legally take you for everything you own. That happened to more than one friend. Buena suerte!
i've never been to mexico but i lived in nevada for 2 years and a lot of my close friends were mexican as well as most of my co-workers (i did construction) , im from Hawaii so i am used to people of all races, and i felt comfortable around them cause they look similar to Filipinos and i grew up in a filipino town. I love everyone , and i want to go visit mexico one day!
@LosDoyerss I love Mexico! I go at least 2 times a year. Just got back from a cultural tour for two weeks. I speak Spanish too. The bigoted GOP Trumpers and Christian right act like Mexico is an arm pit and crime everywhere. It's not.
I like your channel very much. Mexico is in my near future (to live there 8 months a year) and now Guanajuato is on my short list, keep making videos, your newest subscriber.
It's like any place else that Americans with money flock too. The local realtors and everyone else figures out "what Americans afford", and they charge accordingly even if it drives their own friends out of the city. Greedy people are everywhere, and as soon as people figure out you have money, the price goes up.
There once was a bargain expat lifestyle, but not by the the time it gets on RUclips. It's true of all these videos. Only explorers with some kind of hook-up get these goods.
There is tons of advice for folks to not pay these prices. Folks with income streams and time to get the lay of the land can easily get better rates. The shiny restaurants are going to be about the same in price. Street food is where it's at.
Considering buying real estate in Mexico as a foreigner? A few important things to know: 1. Cash only purchase: As a foreigner “extranjero”, you cannot get a mortgage for a house; only Mexican citizens and residents are allowed loans. 2. Property title: you DO NOT hold the title to the Mexican property as a foreigner if you buy 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) from the coast and 200 kilometers (about 125 miles) from the border. What you get is a “fideicomiso” which is essentially a trust held at a Mexican bank, and the bank holds the title for you. Sounds dodgy, right? Like, what if the bank defaults or goes out of business? That was our biggest fear. But! Fideicomiso is the legal way they do real estate in Mexico, and it’s the only way to buy RE as a foreigner near the ocean and/or borders. 3. Residency: Mexico recently upped their financial requirements for becoming a resident, and it’s absolutely insane: $180,000 USD in your savings account! Not trying to deter anyone from purchasing RE, just trying to inform and educate :)
I regularized during the Covid scare; the government didn't charge me too much, and now I have a permanent visa in the cheapest country on this side of the planet. Oh, my income is nearly nothing, only SS payments. So there's the "official" way to do it, and there's the actual way.

Guanajuato is beautiful and affordable!! I stayed twice at Hotel Edelmira. Right across the street from the yellow gold cathedral landmark is a cafe that has amazing food! Crazy to say but the best club sandwich I've ever had. I say that because it was all real meats not sliced processed. Actually that was the norm across the city, amazing food! Esp the real homemade ice cream vendors too. It feels like you're in 16th century Spain which I believe is when it was built by the Spaniards. Absolutely beautiful!
Do your research the Spanish after invading didn't build it they forced the Indians that lived there to build it, under penalty of death or imprisonment and stole all their gold, silver and gems and took most of it back to Spain. Believe me the Indians didn't get paid anything to do it either. Do you actually believe the Conquistador's or the Catholic priest built those church's, Cathedrials and buildings? They didn't! Read how the Spaniards treated the Native people worse then the white European's treated the American Indians.

Once the gringos discover this place, there goes the charms and the low cost of living. So make the most of it…. Never been to Mexico but your videos made me add it to my list of “ must visit”.
I've been there and if you live Centro there's really no cars which means ultimately the gringos won't live there because it requires them to walk which gringos don't like to do 🤣 Spent time in San Miguel Allende as well and for sure this is a better choice in my opinion! It's also a college town which I'm surprised they didn't mention...
oops! They did mention it in passing near the end... 😁 I've been to a lot of places in Mexico and while there other places I would prefer to visit if I wanted to live someplace this would be number one of my list so far
Maybe that information is missing from the video, but Guanajuato is the 3rd city with most US population in México (only after Chapala-Ajijic and San Miguel de Allende). So, we already have a lot of gringos here. But they have adapted very well, and haven't change a lot the beautiful environment of our city.
Don't miss walking up and down and all around the stairs there. I wouldn't say Guanajuato is "very safe", It's easy to end up in the wrong neighborhood, let me tell you. Being there for the Cervantino festival was quite an experience!!
Hi, I noticed you mentioned you had a stem cell treatment? I am in need of the same treatment for my son. How do we go about finding that in Mexico? Not much is available on google. Thank you ❤
San Miguel de Allende is exploding and really don’t need more promotion like this video. There are hundreds of videos about San Miguel. Give it a break. Talk about the water problem instead of promoting why people who earns dollars or euros should come live here. You need to show both sides of the medal. And we’re not talking about how locals can’t afford to live in their own town.
what is wrong with gentrification? it has way more positives than negatives. somehow it's a human right that people should be allowed to live in run down decaying buildings? instead of worrying so much about gentrification in Latin nations, you should worry about the destruction of US cities and towns by millions of undocumented migrants who have no money, no work and too often a criminal background. the US is being absolutely overrun and destroyed by the migrant crisis, but somehow that is virtuous.
@@Helios-Zia as if the number of videos is the cause. people are leaving wealthy western countries in droves because of the corrupt Marxist agendas they are pushing on their citizens. people have to go somewhere and San Miguel is one of those places. there are dozens of other magnets for people in Mexico. why is it that you dont express concern for the US being overrun by undocumented migrants with no job prospects and that have a high rate of criminal activity? clearly brainwashed by leftist ideology. it's somehow only the brown people that are always the victims.
@@RedroomStudios I'm pretty sure the US is the one bringing in immigrants because of how much money it brings to the country, and how lazy the people who live in the US are. They need a larger work force of people who do real jobs that actually contribute the maintenance of buildings, electricity, utilities, and farming, it's the only way the economy can thrive. Either way, the other commenter has a right to worry about his own country just as you do about yours... you shouldn't be mad because they don't give you special privileges when you visit their country. Also, it's surprising how many Americans are misinformed by media... You should look up this scientifically reviewed article: Source: Stowell, Jacob I., Ramiro Martinez, and Jeffrey M. Cancino. "Latino crime and Latinos in the criminal justice system: Trends, policy implications, and future research initiatives." Race and social problems 4 (2012): 31-40. SUMMARY: - Media portrayal and public perception often overstate Latino involvement in crime. - The increase in Latino incarceration is partly due to policies and enforcement programs like Operation Streamline and enhanced border security. (You can blame your politicians for creating fake media here in order to fund things that they want) - Using data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the study found that higher Latino concentration is generally associated with lower homicide victimization rates. (This finding contradicts the stereotype that increased Latino populations lead to higher crime rates.) - Regional analyses focused on border states showed that counties near the US-Mexico border do not have significantly higher homicide rates compared to non-border counties. National analyses revealed that states with the highest Latino population growth did not experience increased homicide rates; in fact, they saw sharper declines in homicide rates compared to the national average.

I’m an US expat. I’ve been living in San Miguel de Allende for 2 years. I just returned from visiting Guanajuato. My two cents comparing to SMA… Guanajuato has much younger / party energy. It’s much noisier than SMA . GTO is significantly cheaper than SMA. Restaurants are not as good or diverse as SMA. GTO has more charm than SMA, which is saying a LOT! Lastly, your Spanish better be solid for living in GTO. In SMA, you can get by with little to no Spanish. Personally, I prefer Guadalajara…and will move there, probably next year. I'm going to check out northern Portugal first though.

there is no grigo prices there are laws to have prices posted, so no you are just going to the tourist spots but food being cheap in Mexico, if you go to apple bees(weird to see a yank in the part were most non poor people go, whats with the loving misery?) Considering buying real estate in Mexico as a foreigner? A few important things to know:

You should look up this scientifically reviewed article:
Source:
Stowell, Jacob I., Ramiro Martinez, and Jeffrey M. Cancino. "Latino crime and Latinos in the criminal justice system: Trends, policy implications, and future research initiatives." Race and social problems 4 (2012): 31-40.
SUMMARY:
- Media portrayal and public perception often overstate Latino involvement in crime.
- The increase in Latino incarceration is partly due to policies and enforcement programs like Operation Streamline and enhanced border security.
(You can blame your politicians for creating fake media here in order to fund things that they want)
- Using data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the study found that higher Latino concentration is generally associated with lower homicide victimization rates.
(This finding contradicts the stereotype that increased Latino populations lead to higher crime rates.)
- Regional analyses focused on border states showed that counties near the US-Mexico border do not have significantly higher homicide rates compared to non-border counties.
National analyses revealed that states with the highest Latino population growth did not experience increased homicide rates; in fact, they saw sharper declines in homicide rates compared to the national average.

. We loved it, but not enough to want to live there. Now we want to check out the Costa del Sol area of Spain. However you have me thinking about mi Mexico! Keep up the good work. By the way, Guadalajara is a great city that has everything except beaches/ocean. The medical care is excellent, which I don't know would be true in Guanajuato.
Thanks for the translation! Happy to hear you’ve been following us sincr Portugal. Good luck on your Spain adventure! ♥️
Guanajuato is my favourite place to visit in Mexico, isn’t it amazing!!! We have amazing memories from Guanajuato!! Sorry I guess I’m enjoying another video of yours. You two are so interesting. 🤔 I think so 😉

Great video minus the eeirie museum.
Thank you for sharing your fabulous experience.
Infectious disease doctor (in Jalisco) diagnosed me after a year of being sick and only a year in Guanajuato is that due to the Caves, mines, tunnels and Bats it is a VERY dangerous place. The doc in Jalisco KNEW I had been near GTO when he gave me his diagnosis something about fungus growing in bat dung in caves mines and tunnels BE WARNED as local docs do not diagnose it, not even after a year of multiple doctor and emergency room vists in GTO . First out of area doc diagnosed it though and knew where I had been... Too weird. I did not know it was the mold in GTO making me sick

Que linda! I was thinking we went here after San Miguel as well, but actually we went to Querétaro 🙃Similar vibes, architecture, town squares, and friendly locals make every place feel like home.
Aaaand endless tacos, totopos, and tequila 🌮
When I was 14 I went camping all over Mexico. 27 some time in the Yucatan. And, I miss it at 66. But, I'm here where I am probly forever, but that's okay. Yes, I would move to Mexico--in the city that's hard to pronounce especially. But, I'd learn Spanish first. Thanks for the video.
Did they still love you when you were 64?
@@deller5924 Probly not.

A few years ago I rented a two bedroom house in a gated community in Guanajuato (not centro) for about $300 USD per month. SEE MY OTHER COMMENT AS TO WHY I WOULD NOT DO IT AGAIN. I would not want to live in Guanajuato Centro ant any rate. But the first time I entered Guanajuato it felt like Ashland, Oregon USA and I was lost while driving and pulled over only to find a park where I would have found Lithia park in Ashland . AMAZING parallels only to find out later they are sister Cities (Ashland St in Guanajuato) and Guanajuato St in Ashland).
Why? Can't find your comment
I would be interested in Guanajuato. Looked beautiful.
haha, with all do respect, if you are talking about moving to Mexico, best to learn that referring to "America" in Mexico and all countries in Latin America for that matter, means the entire American continent. Just say the United States, the U.S. or the States!
It can be used in various ways. And we used it as one of them:

20 USD for lunch is not cheep. If you did that 3m/d 60 x 30 1800 a month. That was really what kind of supervised me in Cancun and Costa Maya, It cost me more for lunch at a shack the the beach than it would have cost me to have the same meal in Florida. Maybe a bit more.
The conversion in the video isn’t even right. It’s $26.63 USD NOT $20 USD
I remember visiting this town years ago..... So beautiful!
It is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. The food is incredible and the people very nice. I recommend…
I'm sorry but the food is not good in Gto hahaha
Cartels are nice to? Lol 😂
I agree with Marcello - this city is AMAZING and fun, too. I stayed in Centro and thank the hotel for managing parking for my big SUV - parking is difficult in Centro, but everything was economical and we loved one shop that made fruit shakes (Vitaminas). I found some mechanics for fixing our electric windows ($30 each) and we had a water pump replaced for about $200. Food has been fine everywhere in Mexico, but I'm not a fan of eating your way through travel - I merely eat to live and do not live to eat!!!

Great Video !!!! Im Moving to Mexico this year , My list : 1 - Mexico City, 2 - Queretaro, 3- Merida , 4- San Miguel Allende , 5- Guadalajara , 6 - Guanajuato , 7- Puerto Vallarta
What made you want to move there?
Can I come lol😅🫠💚
Visited non touristy areas of Mexico. Maybe cheaper than some parts of US but definitely not cheap.
Tried to barter for lower prices in Spanish and not one vendor budged.
Tried the same thing in Guatemala, one vendor did slightly but gave me an annoyed look.
I spent 4 days before I went home from visiting SMD. I had a blast! Stayed in an Airbnb.. I hope you do at least for a little while!
Great Video. My one question is the cellular and internet service quality and reliability
My family is from Guanajuato. Nice to see others moving in and enjoying such a beautiful place
That bowl of delicious looking food they were eating was not inexpensive. $20.00 ! I live in south Florida. Not a cheap place to live. That's what I pay for a simple lunch here.
I was thinking the same thing, and today's exchange rate it is really $26. Was she talking 500 pesos for 1 meal or two?
My thoughts exactly. Lunch at my local Mexican joint runs about $15 after tip.
Thank for appropriate respect for the beautiful local culture.
Portugal is a great country to live in Europe. Amazing climate, food, education and health system. You can get the NHR/D7 visa which is easy to obtain. You can also get a mortgage in Portugal, avoiding the current abusive rents, with only 20% or 30% downpayment showing your 1040F, paystubs and credit score. Remember to maintain your job until signing the deed here in Europe (process can he done entirely remotely using a local lawyer) then you are free to leave rhe US!
If you want to retire on the next 5 to 10 years you can buy now and rent the property until you come. Happy Easter!
Thank You for very down to earth information. Sam
Mexico is underrated AF, has sooo much diversity in people and climate, been all over the world and Mexico is one of my favorites easily
@@imagineme6406 I don't understand what Mexico being close to the US has to do with how great parts of Mexico are..
Well, I’m happy you didn’t have any bad experiences. I have friends in Arizona, who choose not to go down to Mexico to go home because they don’t feel safe they get extorted. Every time they cross the border basically and random checkpoints and they live down near Mexico City in the mountains is where their families are there’s a lot more crime and you hear about the cover it up it’s not good for tourism
Right on. It's not at all safe there.
@@deller5924nor here!
Oh yes, thats call corruption! Police is corrupt.
On the other hand, millions of turists visit México every year, millions! All kind of turists. Do you know how many got problems because of the crime? 000000001%. That's every where.

Nice to see you guys again. I love Guanajuato, but then again, I love Mexico. And by the way it's pronounce like wannawato. I hadn't seen videos from you guys since Portugal and Brazil. I always enjoy watching your videos.
It's pronounced 'guana (like iguana without the initial i) what toh'.
Guana watt toh..... get your phonetics game up
You're great! Which countries in South America that didn't mandate covid testing, masking or vaxx? Thanks!
My family in Portugal seems to always be under this illusion that were well off in Canada, while were probably struggling more than they are to get by
Prices go up up up....
You two are the best! This was really interesting. We’ve discussed moving to Mexico and I’m grateful for your footage and narration. But seriously- you would never leave Portugal, right?
I would check out Antigua Guatemala are Leon Nicaragua
Must be $300/ day in lieu of month!
I drove to Guanajuato in August with my rental car. As we got near the city, the street were full of Mexican tour guides trying to solicit their free(?) service which I felt intimidating. The decent mediocre hotels were at well over USD$100 and there weren’t much to choose from. Also I didn’t feel safe as I heard there were some recent violence due to cartel activity.
I just drove straight to Irapuato and stayed there for less than 1/2 the price.
San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are tourist traps you shouldn’t miss 😅
Boo ,Boo
So that's a life signal that you expats mustn't move to Mexico
6:05 It does kind of look like vids I've seen of Brazilian favelas -- from a distance, but much less scary up close! 😍 Joining Vancouver on my bucket list 🤔
I totally LOVE Guanajuato and would love to live thee at least part of the year. Do they have PASSION FRUIT there? In Brazil, the Maracuja is amazing, but it's harder to find in Mexico and it's not made as well in Mexico - so I wish I knew where to get the "good stuff".
Mexico is an Amazing County of Extreme Beauty and Friendly People!!
Friendly when they think they can get money from you
And brutally evil drug and human-trafficking cartels

Fake friendly doesn't count. I've seen neighbors in Mexico greet each other and then talk sh't about them as soon as they're at a distance where they can't hear them.
And yes, my original statement is true. Cry all you want.. won't change a thing.
@@liberatedentrepreneur149 I happen to have been to Mexico, and can't but concur with you!
Thanks a lot, you two. Now you just went and added another city to my lists of "want to check out" places. Hehehe
It looks like a really great place. We live in Ouray CO (touted as the Switzerland of America); which is just below 8000 feet elevation. So, the Guanajuato attitude would be no problem. We were in Mazatlan in August and September; felt it was too hot for us. I doubt that would be a problem here.
Safe travels
Guanajuato has been a state of international trade for many years and its students are from different cities and countries. The international Cervantino festival with more than 50 years delighting culture, art and good music, inviting countries from all over the world. A good tourist destination.
Thanks for that informative info. I am an expat who now resides in The Hague, Netherlands and looking for another inexpensive place to reside! This place looks promising!👍🏽😁
They say it's very affordable to live there...... But what kind of jobs can one get there and will they pay at least $800 per month to pay for all expenses?? 🤔
That is not cheap for food. I live in Thailand and I could spend $20 and eat five times. Y'all paying American prices lol.
$20 is not Mexican prices either. You can easily eat very well in Mexico for $5 or even less.
Pleaseeee don't move here :( :( as a mexican, the rents are super expensive now, You guys can afford a rent because u pay in dollars , it's ridiculously cheap in dollars, but for us it's gonna be impossible to afford a place, it already is impossible , so please don't do it 😭😭
Unfortunately most people don’t care about the pleads of the locals of the places they want to go to. Same thing happens in the US itself, Californians running away to other cheaper states like Arizona and Utah and making everything unaffordable for the locals.
@@bloodndestroy This is simply ecology. Its dispersal behavior. And there's really nothing that can be done about it.
I agree! I moved here in 1991 and I earn a teacher's salary in pesos from the Universidad de Guanajuato. I can see how the arrival of so many foreigners with dollars and euros is making everything more expensive now, especially rents. Come visit enjoy and then leave! This may sound hypocritical coming for me but this has been my permanent home for 31 years now and I can relate to how Mexicans feel.
@@bloodndestroy Yeah I know and it's kind of the same thing happening in US but you can't compare when you get paid in dollars and u move to other place when it's the same currency than when it's different country and different currency.. That's the prob.

Very quaint and nicely done! Thank you I learned alot.
Rents are NOT that expensive here in LA unless they're luxury like shown in the beginning of the video. Ppl just don't know how to live within their means and end up gentrifying cities in Mexico
Sure, you can find something for 2K$ but it will NOT be nice. It will be a basic, worn down place in a poor location.
@@joenandamalie Honestly as long as I have a roof over my head that's good
Saying 500 pesos is cheap eating makes you sound like one of those rich gringos you talk about lol!
$20 for lunch and $40 for a room in a cheap part of Mexico means you're being charged Gringo prices not local prices. I have friends who spend a couple of months in winter in Mexico, and they pay a fraction of that. One is originally from there, so they clearly pay local prices.
Exactly
$20 for what they were eating is ridiculous.
can you teach us how to pay local price?
yea but if you don't speak spanish thats what they charge they tried doing that to me and i told them no iam mexican don't charge me that and they said ok and charge me the original price
there is no grigo prices there are laws to have prices posted, so no you are just going to the tourist spots but food being cheap in Mexico, if you go to apple bees(weird to see a yank in the part were most non poor people go, whats with the loving misery?) It's only cheaper for some items and way more expensive than u.s. Applebee's, I would rather pay 4 times the price(cheaper than tourist traps) than to interact with the poor, you think we enjoy beggars and people playing annoying music?
Authentic how exactly most of our culture was created post civil war, 1930's, if you dont count the ever evolving Vaquero(original cowboys) culture thats our oldest culture but we are white and you dont like that do you, that would be like you going to live in the u.s. but you only want the projects to have the most authentic eperience, you are just there to feel better about your self we only want the one in Cancun and la condeza any way, the rest of you weirdos are going to get it soon (way more taxes and visa requirements)
