I feel like when you talked about being tired or not wanting to explore because it was either TOO much, or it was just something way too similar to everything else. It’s great to find things on your own when exploring, but I think everybody is hyping up what is there. This map isnt entirely made in a way where it’s “if you look somewhere and go there, something is most likely there” which is flat out a lie and I’ve wasted hours just riding on horseback to irrelevant places on the map. It made me not want to explore, and then when I explored and found things, it was literally just a dungeon or something that i’ve already done earlier before, or something that I didnt want to do at all. TLDR I feel the open world isnt as cool or as rewarding to explore as people say in my opinion.

Thank you glad someone feels the same way. With Bloodbourne finding a side boss was not a regular occurrence so it felt special. Elden Ring has really helped me understand what I enjoy from exporation which finding unique things. the only time exploration was Good was when finding quests but with size of the world it was rare to find due to only having a small number.

@@John-996 yo facts. If it wasnt for me having somebody in my stream to tell me what I had to do and where to go for the dectus lift I think I would’ve never found it. Same goes with side quests. I didnt even finish Ranni’s side quest because I had no idea wth was going on or why I was doing it. The most straight forward side quest (and only other side quest i did) was the one in the volcano manor in order to get a key to fight Rykard.

The problem is Elden Ring is just not a good open world game. There are many great open world games like the Elder Scrolls series & Witcher 3, these games are genuinely fun to explore for the first time playing plus they have great replay value. Elden Ring doesn't.

I didn't know how to find locations on the map so I spent a lot of time riding in circles not finding anything. And when I did find a side dungeon, I didn't find them that rewarding in terms of runes or loot. Maybe if I knew the glovewort was useful for upgrading idk. But I ended up fighting Margit when I was maybe a bit weaker than I should have, but I didn't rush to him like people defending the game claim. I had been wandering around and I also didn't upgrade my weapons that much bc the shards seems very scarce and hadn't even found enemies to farm drops like previous games. I hadn't found that mine right near the beginning of the game since like I said I didn't know how to read the map.

The rolling spam is getting a bit dated, if they're gonna speed up enemies and up the aggression that's fine, but it still feels like the player is in 2011 while the enemies are in 2022, the dodging should be more reactive to what kind of attack is happening, just rolling through flurries of spinning swords looks and feels a bit silly by now. (The i frames system is great not saying to change it just needs to be updated in their next one imo)

There's a seriously weird thing happening right now that the masses seem to latch on to lackluster things in media and blindly praise them and try to silence anyone that goes against the grain. Dark souls was awesome because it was a new exciting challenging concept but too many damn things are just souls formula now. Every single fromsoftware game is just a souls clone and even other developers instead of creating new characters for a new game are dragging their awesome characters into stupid souls clones. Darksiders and especially God of war have unfortunately gone through this. Even mentioning that some other studio could create the old god of war formula while Santa Monica studio works on their souls clone version seems to upset people to a severely weird degree. I'm not saying I hate the souls formula but it's getting really stale, especially in elden ring with the countless reused assets from older souls titles, some spots feel legit like walking back in time to Dark souls 3.

100% agree, input lag + that queue system that can lock you into a button press so you can push attack twice before the first attack animation goes off and be unable to dodge or cancel the second attack so you're just stuck there while all the bosses are insanely aggressive, have 40 hit combos, everything either ends in an AoE that forces you out of melee when you should be able to punish or bosses can just randomly go instantly into another one shot combo without warning, bosses have telegraphs that are too fast to the point you cannot escape is you see the telegraph making them pointless and turning some bosses into pure luck, it's not hard, it's just you hoping the boss doesn't do something broken. It's fake difficulty, in other Souls games, the vast majority of bosses follow the same rules as the player, they have punishable moves, they can't just bypass their punishable move animations to one shot you, everything is balanced around summoning breaking the balance of the game, so many bosses made that completely invalidate specific build types making some spells or archetypes never used invalidating the entire point of builds in an RPG. Genuinely, the bosses are the worst part of the game which is wild, the exploration is cool and fun but it doesn't outweigh the boss design being cheap garbage most of the time, it's not fun. For me, after playing over 100 hours(I gave the game a chance), it's a 6 out of 10 at best, I haven't even gone into how bad PvP is or balancing of things like status effects that are overpowered AF vs things like death magic that have high requirements to use and suck, or the fact vigor means nothing at a certain point, everything can kill you in 1 or 2 hits whether you have 10 or 80 vigor, or things like input reading where bosses will instantly trigger certain attacks the second you push the button to drink a flask, not in response to your movement, the AI will immediately do it the second it registers the button press and most of the time, there is nothing you can do about it. Honestly, after typing all this and still having more, this game is actually a 4 out of 10 for me, it's frustrating way more than it is fun.

When it comes to the fall damage segment, I can explain whats happening in technical terms. The game is always checking your stable ground position at all times except for teleporting to different grace sites. (There's way more to it than that but I'm cutting it shorter) So when you jump off a cliff the game saves your last known stable ground position and calculates the distance once you touch stable ground again. From what I've seen and experienced myself most slopes aren't considered stable ground. So when you touch the bottom all the game sees is point A to point B. So yes, the game separating different planes. 🙂

The aids duo bosses were what really sealed the deal for me when it came to my final impression of Elden Ring (looking at you twin valkyrie gargoyles, duo crucible knights and godskin duo). I also just don't think that a massive open world layout in practice works well with the core darks souls formula which this game reuses. The entirety of Elden Ring essentially boils down to the exact same gameplay/exploration loop in previous souls games of "go to location/dungeon, kill boss, pick up loot, rinse and repeat", that is now spread across an overly-bloated world where content gets significantly reused as a consequence. This dynamic works fine in a more linear-style format which the original soulsborne games are characterised by, especially in Bloodborne and DS3 where boss fights are more heavily emphasised. In an open world game like Elden Ring, however, which gives you virtually nothing to do outside of this repeated loop for the whole length of the game, the gameplay/exploration experience ends up becoming relatively monotonous and taxing, exacerbated by the regularly reused content and enemies.
For the initial third to half of Elden Ring, my personal experience with the game was stellar, but by the time I reached and finished the capital (which also included completing Ranni's quest line beforehand), I felt like I was pretty much done with the game, with everything else after becoming much more of a mental (and even physical) slog to finish. The end game itself was of course its own kettle of fish completely, and not in the most positive way either.
    Edit: typos

No one is even talking about the innately bad lock on system or the hive-mind ai that moves as one entity while the game "happens" to make my attacks whiff between half a dozen enemies that all dodged aside or used an attack animation to totally avoid my attack by millimeters. Meanwhile I get hit by phantom swings and oversized hitboxes. Oh! Don't forget enemy attacks that one shot you but make no sense, like getting hit by the handle of the Night Calvary's Halberd while he drags it on the ground. Or the random fifth elbow of the Ulcerated Tree Spirt (what is collision with terrain anyway, am I right?) Or the dragon's knee when it lands with the multi hitting Smash attack... or how every enemy in the game is perfectly ready to totally destroy your health bar at a moment's notice, but you are most guaranteed to get beaten up when you think it's your turn to fight back. The previous entries into the souls series had clear punish windows in most fights, they would attack, you would avoid the damage by blocking, dodging, rolling, something, and then you would do some damage in return. Not in this game. Every enemy has a "punish punish" as I like to call it, where they hit me for daring to try and exploit the punish window. Guard counters are almost always interrupted, especially if you're fighting more than one enemy, which is basically the entire game. Early game dungeon bosses are nothing but late game area mobs, there isn't a single iconic duo fight in the game, and all of the bosses just feel like the developers wanted to see how many attacks they could have a boss use in a row without stopping. Or how many times it will spam an AoE that will probably one or two shot you...I counted the number of Slam attacks the first Burial Watchdog (why is called watch dog but is a cat? whatever) used against me, and in one fight he used his aerial slam ELEVEN times in a row, not using anything else at all the whole time. The move does 2/3 of your hp at low level and you can only dodge it for so long when he goes up off camera almost directly overhead, then pauses for a variable amount of time, then slams down on your head, only to instantly enter the exact same attack animation and leaving me no time to do anything but run for my life and pray I can make him miss with enough room to squeeze in a heal. Oh, I'm out of heals because every fight seems like the AI ramps up the challenge more and more over the course of every single fight. Honestly I'll just make a video about it lol. The art is beautiful, the musical score is intense, that's about as far as my praise can honestly go. The game feels lazy and rushed despite the years they spent working on it. Elden Ring was amazing the first time I played it.
I'm now on NG+ and I just don't feel the same urge to explore and fight bosses anymore, because you know what? I've done it. And the game is so long and I've seen most of the secrets that it just kind of feels tedious to have to chew through all the lower tier content to get to the end again.
Endgame bosses are straight up unfair bullshit, hitting so hard that even at 60 Vigor, you need to essentially do a no-hit run on bosses like Maliketh and Malenia to have any chance at winning, which most players can't do.
Weapons and skills are still busted, with a few like Rivers of Blood and Moonveil Katana, as well as Bloodhound Step dominating PvP and even PvE while if you use anything else you're going to die.

    • @rodneyabrett
      @rodneyabrett 2 года назад +4

@@Nazylexx Studios switch to licensed engines to save money, not to spend more. That's the entire point of an off the shelf engine. Otherwise, the tradeoff for the licensing fees wouldn't even be worth it. Unreal's level streaming in particular would have been far superior for this open world game. If Unreal didn't save you money in development time, their entire business model would fail. It's meant for teams that don't have the engineering staff capable of building and maintaining a custom engine that needs to be overhauled every 5-10 years due to lighting and tech advancements. You leverage the tools Epic gives you instead of creating and supporting commonly used tech engineering things like physics tools, character mocap mapping, etc. Animations don't need to be recreated from scratch. The animation cycles aren't typically authored in-engine. Maya/Blender/Max etc. Then exported into the game engine. But even if that were not the case, skeletal anim data is universal.
Capcom has the resources to maintain their own engine on the tech side, but probably not From Software. That's my take.
      The Surge
      Mortal Shell
      Ashen
      From The Ashes
All use Unreal so it's not like you couldn't do this style of game in the engine and I'm sure From Software would be more than capable of making their full vision without compromises. That's my opinion at least.

They are Japanese developer with their mindset "We do what we actually want to do". Their engine is custom made for them. Idk how many Japanese developers uses Unreal (I know that Ghostwire Tokyo was on UE4) but you have that language barrier can be a reason also.
Even Miyazaki isn't speaking English at all.
I don't feel like studio should abandon their own engine because Unreal is popular. We need competition on game market to avoid monopoly from Epic.

I agree with a lot of your opinions. Like you, I like the game as well, but it is, by no means, the best game of all time, and I don't think this should be game of the year. The open world is too big, a huge amount of it is just empty space (although it is a pretty empty space). I just don't have the time to check every nook and cranny, and exploration is just not very engaging to me. I played partly blind, but also used Fightin' Cowboy's walkthrough to make sure I didn't miss the majority of the game.
the side activities all get super repetitive and boring far before the end of the game. Every catacomb looks the same, with only two or three enemy types and endlessly repeating bosses. The caves aren't much better although there is a little more variety. The mines are probably the coolest side dungeon activity, but even they're pretty repetitive. Even the Hero Graves, which are the most unique side dungeons are pretty much all the same. When you really, honestly think about it, aren't the catacombs, caves, hero graves, and mines just enemy outposts/enemy camps/watch towers/radio towers from other open world games that gamers love to shit on nowadays? They're just not labeled on the map until you find them. I ask that honestly. In Elden Ring, they're dotted all across the map, you go in, loot, kill shit, and fight a boss. In the other open world games, you go into the enemy camp, loot, kill everyone and take it over. Does the boss make it that much more different?
The open world, at least in my opinion makes completing the quests (that are actually fully implemented) utterly tedious unless you constantly search everywhere periodically in order to see if an NPC moved, or use a walkthrough. Selene's questline, for example, after you release her body from that underground chamber. How am I supposed to know she's going to show up in Seluvis's puppet room thing? Maybe its tied to some item description or something, or maybe she says something about it, but I just didn't remember, but I know for certain that without a walkthrough of that questline, I would never have found her again, because I felt like I had no reason to return to that area. Latena's questline is another good example. I ran into her something like 20-25 hours into the game, after I was done with Limgrave and Stormveil, but before the Academy. The next time you do anything with her is pretty much at the end of the game, for me something like 50 hours later. I had completely forgotten about who she was, that I had her as a summon, and even that part of her quest gave me half of the secret medallion to get to the snowfield area. Without a walkthrough, I 100% would have missed the end to her quest.
Then we get to the combat. I think the problem with the combat is the result of several other sub-issues. First, I feel like Elden RIng enemies and bosses read the players' input far more than other souls games. Granted its been a while since I played DS3 or Sekiro, but I don't remember those games having that issue. Second, I think in an effort to make this game more accessible (which I have absolutely no problem with, the more people that play, the more successful the game is, and the more likely we are to get more From Soft games, I can't stand the gatekeeping that some of this community engages in) the developers coded and designed the enemies and bosses in such a way where they're balanced to be fought with at least one summon. Without a summon, the bosses attack the player non-stop with far fewer and obvious attack openings. That combined with their ability to read inputs makes what appear to be openings, punishments to the player and ridiculously difficult. Then there are instances where a boss will go through a 5-30 part attack, after which you'd assume they would need some cooldown time, and an opening to punish if you dodge and/or block their attacks, but they immediately run away and out of range and start a new attack string before you can punish. On the opposite end, when you do summon, the bosses - even Melenia - are too easy. I think Melenia took me five tries, but only because I used a summon, I beat Malaketh on the first try, because I had a summon, I beat Morgot on the first try, I beat Mohg (both versions on the first try), etc., all because I had a summon to split the aggro.
By the end of the game, I just wanted it to be over, I don't think I've ever felt that way about a souls game from From Soft. I've played them all apart from Bloodborne and Demons Souls, but I do intend on playing both of them. Sure I've gotten frustrated playing them in the past, but each time I've beaten one of the others for the first time, I felt 100 times more accomplished than when I beat Elden Ring. When I beat Elden RIng, I didn't feel accomplished or proud, I just felt exhausted and couldn't wait to move onto the next thing.
In conclusion, Elden RIng is a good game, and for the first 30-50 hours I was truly enjoying myself, but once I realized how repetitive and unfair it is, especially in the late game, I just wanted it to be over. In my opinion, it is the weakest of all the souls games from From Soft.
Of course, these are just my opinions, and they are not meant to insult/discount any others' feelings toward the game who enjoy it more than me.
Jesus Christ, I did not intend to write an essay. Sorry!

Oh and Witcher is bad. Way worse and 10 times more boring. Elden ring is an 8.5/10, Witcher 3 is a 7/10

    • @kato093
      @kato093 Год назад

@PokiiiChiii yes. Way more. In the Witcher all you do is walk run and ride the fkn bugged to hell horse, just to find yourself talking to random people, follow map markers the whole time, then you gotta go to the store and sell shit (and it's shit, random shit) cuz you are encumbered.
      That is Witcher Exploration.
In elden ring you visit new places and find and fight new enemies (when they aren't recycled), talk to NPCs, do their quests without following any markers, you learn the story actively by the few cutscenes, the dialogue and reading descriptions of items.
Souls games are way more active, Witcher is reactive the whole game. It's nice cuz there's a literal shitload of reactive quests and dialogues but it's still boring reactive shit, with some bad combat sprinkled in. And the movement system itself is bad in the Witcher.
But that's from my perspective, i don't like classic RPGs that have dogshit gameplay and rely entirely on having hundreds of hours of repetitive quests where all you do is going from point A to point B, talking to someone, rinse and repeat, with some combat encounters here and there.
Exploring in souls games means literally exploring the map, exploring in Witcher 3 is running in an empty wasteland until you find a marker that starts a stupid quest.
If Witcher had minimal story and quests like Elden ring, it would just be a bad game.
If elden ring had the same amount of npcs and quests as Witcher 3, it would be the best Witcher game ever made for the next 100 years.

I think Elden Ring took a lot of boss techniques from Sekiro. I heard you liked Sekiro a lot. Remember how the bosses would react to your positioning and stance, to the point where you can make the boss do certain attacks. Elden Ring definitely has that core "If this then that" and I think it kinda pissed some DS players since its not a "Wait and react".

Reuse of assets in any game is not the worst thing. Monster Hunter is one of my favorite franchises and the whole point is to fight the same catalogue of monsters over and over again. But ER is not all that effective with their reuse and the synergy of ER's various mechanics make that ineffectiveness worst sometimes.
For example: The minor dungeons. The loot obtained from that side content is often a gamble. The reuse of environmental assets and enemies do not effectively inform us the nature of the loot they provide, so the only way to find out if a dungeon has good loot is to complete it. But because of the strict manner that builds work in ER, all that work clearing the dungeon could have been for naught since the loot you get doesn't contribute to your build. Horizon: Forbidden West also reuses enemy types, but the game is more efficient than ER in communicating what kind of loot the player can expect from said enemies. That communication allows players to have a choice to either ignore that enemy as they have no need for that loot or fight them for that needed loot.

Also, to clarify. Did you run into input lag or input queue issues? The game, 270 hours thay ive played has never lagged on me, input wise. But the input queue is atrocious. When you talked about the lag issues, how you would be spamming and nothing you were wanting it to do was happening perfectly describes the issues with the input queue in this game. It makes me wonder if you have misdiagnosed the issue, and yes, it's a big issue.
Input queue was present in most the previous games but the window where you could do it was so small. In ER, let's say you go to attack then dodge out. You hit attack then start hitting dodge. In previous games, it qould queue up like maybe 20 frames before the animation ended. So if the boss decides to attack, you can change your plan on the fly and dodge out quicker.
In ER, the queue is like half the previous animation. So if they start to attack as you are and you have hit the attack button one time halfway through the first animation you're stuck with the next attack even though there could still be .75 seconds between the pressing of the button and the end of the animation.
Contrast this with Sekiro. You can stop any attack with a block/parry. You can go to attack. The katana one inch from their face. And you can block before it hits them. In fact, once you learn this, you can use it to your advantage to bait out their blocks or attacks.

I believe the problem is that Fromsoft attempted to create a hybrid of their own formula and the open-world RPG, I dare say, without consulting an expert in an open-world RPG, why not scale the bosses to the character's level? wanna make it challenging? scale it to the character's level + 5.
About the quests I completely agree with you, there is this character Nepheli, half the game she is crestfallen, you have to bring her a specific summon/key that is not mentioned ANYWHERE but very minor lip-service in very few item-descriptions, now are the quests of an addict looking fella, a noble and a the mentioned above warrior woman related to eachother? apparently so because these three questions converge to eachother and don't tell me explore and find out because it converges in Limgrave,
And that's also where they haven't listened to an open-world RPG expert, once you finish Limgrave there is no reason to go there, the game advances in a somewhat linear fashion, where as for example, skyrim you can be level 50 but still have reasons to go the Riverwood and Whiterun which are according to the story's flow very early game locations.

Scaling enemies to a player's level ALWAYS feels cheap and lame. There's no good way to do it, period. But the fact that the game is somewhat linear despite being open world means you'll probably never be way off in terms of your level progression, unless you decide to go back to previous areas and explore more. I really don't see what the problem is with any of this, and I think it worked very well.

I think I agree with most of this. The game is absolutely amazing, but obviously nothing is perfect.
I think the reason people hold the developers to such a high regard, compared to other devs, which is what you were asking in the beginning, is that we know they care. A lot of developments nowadays are focused on making a game that fits into the norm, so they can be comfortable that it will reach a certain amount of sales, and will make a certain amount of money. The sheer risk that fromsoft take, by having controversial game, with no pay to win aspects or micro transactions, is a big one. But it’s just so nice to see a big developer that isn’t trying to do what everyone else is, and that is why people gush so much about fromsoftware.
Also you should finish the ringed city dlc of dark souls 3, it has one of the most fun boss fights in any game I’ve ever played

Yeah, but, like, it is almost perfect, it could've been the best game of all time
Like, the first three areas of the game are very good - most of the enemies and bosses there are fair&balanced (with exception of margit bcuz of his counterattacks why the hell they've done that, and some regular mobs are way too annoying), there is almost no repetition and none of the weapons and weapon arts are over-the-top (like BHS, RoB or MV), like if they've simply followed the DS3's formula (which imo is the best one (but i haven't played sekiro and BB so idk))
And then it all went downhill from there

It’s not controversial though dude. Fromsoft isn’t reinventing the wheel over here with their games, they’re just reinventing dark souls. And not by a whole lot. They essentially just reskin it, slap a new name on it and there you have it, a new fromsoft game. Elden ring is just dark souls 2.0. Little to nothing has changed about it other than graphics and story.

I thought rolling wasn't based on input lag, and was based around when you release the button, not instantly when you press it (because it's the run button as well)? It's why I hate the game too, because it forces you to think a millisecond ahead, or pray that you get lucky and dodge correctly. Worse than that is the action-queue 🤧🤧
The game's still way more enjoyable & satisfying than most games on the market. But it'll still make me want to throw my controller every now and then 🙃

  • @sorrowsforyou

This game feels like it needed at least 6 more months of development to finely tune damage dealt by bosses and cut some unnecessary dungeons caves and hero graves.
Radahn before patch was absolutely ridiculous and made me put down the game for about 2 weeks and once i found out they nerfed him, i came back and he felt like a true fair and balanced fight. i feel some of the end game bosses need this adjustment, in all honesty radahn is a little too over-tuned but little tweaks like that will really help new players in the months to come to not have such a grueling and seemingly unfair experience.
Bloodborne will always be my favorite because the challenge feels the fairest and the skill gap is at its best imo i wish Elden Ring borrowed more from Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne rather than the unfair sides of DS2 and extreme level of difficulty and skill gap of Sekiro while also not giving you the proper tools to overcome those challenges in a fair and challenging way (cheesing with bleed and mimic isn’t a solution).

I was expecting something different, like Sekiro, hence "Elden Ring" and not "Dark Souls. George RR Martin slapped his name on the box and it's been all flattery since. Just Dark Rolls with spaz freak giant bosses that are generally off-screen attacking, with a purposeless "open world" that adds nothing but tedium to the game. Not much replay value.
