I Sewed the Cutest Bonnet! | 18th Century Yorktown Bonnet Bonnet Pattern Test

- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2024
- Hello Friends! This week, we are pattern testing the Yorktown Bonnet, a 18th - early 19th century Bonnet by Penny River Costumes and GoodWivesLinens. The pattern says it is for 1860 through 1900, but I'm pretty sure you can push it into regency a smidge! This pattern was super thorough, and really easy to put together! There are instructions for historical and modern methods of putting it together as well as easier and harder ways of construction. They give you multiple ways to decorate and pleat this hat and it's all very clear when you make it! I would say this would be very beginner hat-making friendly! Do click the link and get yourself a copy of this very common bonnet, it comes highly recommended!

Sometimes, we just want to wear a cute bonnet with ribbons flying in an aesthetically pleasing way? No one else? Ok.
Count me in
Yes, like Laura on Little House on the Prairie
Yes, else. Definitely!
Yes, else. Definitely!
I'm here for it! But I need bows and maybe flowers on mine all in light blue
If you make 7 different bonnets, that’s the Bonnet Family right there.
This is adorable! Now you need a purple one. Halloween all year.
I was thinking that a few Halloween bats or something would add the Noelle vibe to this one ... hmmmm
Agree!
Love it!
Really well edited video - great mix of chatty without losing focus on the project and I can’t explain the shared sense of satisfaction from watching the items cross off the list
Glad you enjoyed it!
How fun! Love the interactions, the clothes, the happy laughter...
A green regency dress with like, a dark blue sleeveless Spencer to act as 'overalls' ???! That would be the coolest. In my frustration at living in the middle of nowhere and not being able to get buttons, I took up resin crafting, which has derailed 100% of my sewing, but now I have a lot of resin and molds and can make buttons and have started making cool crochet hook sets and.... squirrel brain + disposable income = ANOTHER hobby!
That is really a super cute bonnet! I'd wear it in every color, a tie-dye one would be really cute too. lol
I think so too!
Aww, the decorated busk is lovely and historically accurate.
My favourite one is the vital that I think is in a museum in Lancashire that says "to my Dear sister Anne, don't you dare break this one"
AHAHAHAHA!
I NEED TO MAKE THIS!
I live walking distance to the beach, and love to go sit/soak up the warmth, sea breezes, and salty air…. But I’m committed to protecting my face from the sun.
I think this would be the cutest hat ever!
It totally would be!!
Love the bonnet!!! You should definitely make a Luigi bonnet
I just might!
That IS a cute bonnet!
I get my pinking shears sharpened every couple of years.
The bonnet us super cute and now I want to make one.
And thank you for always reminding us to leave a 👍 because I always get so engrossed in watching and doing whatever else it is that I do while watching RUclips that I often forget to 👍 even though I love all your videos.
That IS a cute bonnet! I also agree 💯 about Tom Cruise. Another situation where I have to disavow the person behind the artistic product I love. A Few Good Men is one of my favorite movies.
So, you can actually get a rotary cutter blade that has a pinking edge and the ditch ye evil, finger bruising pinking sheers forever. 100% agree the sheers are the devil X_X. Your bonnet turned out really nicely, and it was a delight to be in your company whilst I pull linen threads. Hope your week is splendid!
Thank you! 💖
That bonnet is so sweet - I hope you will model it again and show the back. I love how much you appreciate new challenges- that little fear of the unknown balanced by patience, planning and confidence in your skills.
That bonnet is super cute & I would love to see a Super Mario Brothers regency gown!
I would, 100%, be here for a Regency Luigi cosplay.
For the brim of caps I have used several layers of iron on interfacing. Also if you machine sew a few layers of fabric, lines 1/2 a centimetre apart then it firms it up nicely. I have used that technique to make wings for dolls. That way if you get caught in a downpour your brim stays fine.
I have gone a bit crazy. I am knitting a multi coloured stranded knit sweater for myself in fine yarn, 360 stitches around. You see I made a beret and liked it so much so I decided on a sweater, a cardigan actually... and it will need to be steeked. Oh and I am making up the pattern as I go.
Eeeee! Goth Miss Muffet bonnet!! This is the BEST HAT EVER!
I love it. I also LOVE the idea of regency Super Mario.
Love the bit about the ever after prince
😂
I'm digging the bonnet! Very satisfying to see it come together so nicely. Also, that busk is way cool.
Thank you! Cheers!
Sweet, It turned out supper cute! The busk, I would put it on the wall, it's lovely!
Yes! Thank you!
The bell has to be rehit for notifications sometimes I find. RUclips just does what it wants and it's not always good. The hat is adorable.
Excellent music choice, I had the Arisocats going though my head! 🤣
Love the hat! Love the big brim! I am sun sensitive so hiding from the sun is good for me
Love the bonnet! And the poms poms were worth the angst - I like how they soften the sharp edge of the brim. Mail your pinking shears to me and I will have a great professional guy sharpen them for you. ✂️
I didn’t know you could get them sharpened!!
That bonnet is too cute! As for the busk...I want one, and I would definitely hang it on the wall. It is too cool to not be displayed!
I totally agree!
Beautiful work as always 🥰 if you ever wanted to try something different instead of poster board quilters use a heat resistant template plastic, the Mylar is rated to 450° I think, anyway it has a similar weight and feel to it but it can be ironed against which is super convenient 🥰 love love love the bonnet ❤️
Great tip! Thanks!
I would totally have used that, but I didn’t want to wait for it to arrive!
@@Costuming_Drama You'll have to try that stuff for the Luigi version...
So cute! As someone who does a lot of 70s stuff, the undecorated version was giving me mad Holly Hobbie vibes, and I could totally see someone in the 70s making a patchwork version of this (which means now I want to). But, ohmygod, I'm dying over the Super Mario idea!
Oh yes, for sure 70’s patchwork vibes! Everything comes around again!
I think the bonnet is gorgeous! I wish it had more decorations but you have to follow the history of the style. I finished my knitted hat, the first one I made knitting in the round. I started with interchangeable circular needles and changed to double pointed needles when I got close to the crown. I am making a pair of gloves to go with it. They are being made completely with double pointed needles. Sewing was a necessity for me when I was teaching as the salary was very low but I had to wear dresses or skirts with blouses for work. I am so glad I no longer have to wear panty hose. I may do some sewing projects again when I make a dent in my yarn stash. I will probably start with doll/teddy bear outfits first and possibly go to baby and kid clothes after. I don't plan to make anything for me.
Yep, i'm sold, love that hat!
That is such a cute bonnet. Another fun watch. 👍🏽😃
Thank you 🤗
This is the cutest thing ever! How can it be so cute? And you're really cute in it!
I'm having an I-actually-have-energy-today-day and am contemplating if I should 1. continue felling seams on my medieval dress, 2. attempt to strangle velvet in the sewing mashine as I have finished basting it into submission or 3. make small pouches for sandal wood pieces that I can put into my fabric storage to keep away moths.
Also, because this is something I'm nerdy about. I think it's dopamine rather than seretonin that you get when crossing things off a list. Both are hormones that makes you feel good, so it's not a big thing. I confuse them sometimes too!
Super cute bonnet! I'm a new subscriber, but I've watched videos in the past, & I also sub to several other cos-tubers. I learned to sew as a child from my mother and two of my grandmothers, but I don't have a sewing room (or even much space that I can commandeer for sewing on the regular) nowadays. So, mostly, I watch y'all so I can live my sewing life vicariously. I have a few vintage machines; I just don't have cutting space (no dining table, not even enough floor space for cutting more than... a mini-skirt for a child?) I've been known to toss a piece of plywood on the bed for cutting, but that requires that I'm able to finish the cutting before anybody needs the bed. One spouse with various health issues + me with hEDS = unlikely to lay out fabric/pattern, pin, & finish cutting before somebody needs to crash.
Thanks! Nice to meet you!
I’m imagining a mushroom 🍄 bonnet for Toad to compliment your Luigi because mushroom bonnet sounds delightful to me.
I like it!
Yup, I have a love-hate relationship with my pinking shears. It is like every fabric has that one notch it just hates. So do you start after it or stop before you get to it. WHY! Love the bonnet! Options! Love it!
I love the bonnet. I was not sure about the puffs until you got them on. Then I liked them!!
Glad you like them!
I need to clean my whole downstairs before strangers come over. Am I going to do that right now? No...gonna watch you clean your place first. :D Inspiration! Yeah, that's what we'll call it!
Ahahahahaha!
The bonnet is really cute on you. You did a great job.
Thank you! 😊
I finally finished the hand embroidery on the stays I was working on and today I got the boning channels and the boning done. I started another set of stays too, because I might as well do both at the same time.
Wonderful!
Beautiful bonnet and lovely looking pattern too
Thank you for showing us all your pattern tests. They are very informative and helpful, especially if its a pattern company that some may not have used before.
The flooff was very cute too
Thank you! 😊
Digging the clean up 🎵 music 🎶🎶
You are the sweetest! Thank you so much for pattern testing and sharing 😊😊😊
You are so welcome! Thank you for letting me play with your new toy!!
That bonnet is perfect for the shape of your face. Also, a kind of history bounding baseball cap.....Where's my silk and poster board.....
It really is!!
That has major Muffet vibes!!
This bonnet is too stinking cute!
xoxo's Sandie
The bonnet is super cute!
i’m glad you’re a fellow Mission Impossible fan. I just finished a rewatch of Rogue Nation today. It is a toss up between that and Ghost Protocol for which is my favourite 😊
Okay, this is a super cute little bonnet! I was planning to do a straw hat but now might need a bonnet too. I do love Penny River. ❤
Do it!! It’s a great hat!
Hello. I like bonnet. I could see it being adaptable into different eras or charming needs. I'm currently working a bit outside my comfort zone and making a bunch of costumes for a production of Mamma Mia. Making lots of flared pants and angel sleeves. It's been fun so far.
That sounds like fun!!
Ohhh I wonder how it would look with modern fabrics.
Dougray Scott is scottish, and from memory one reason he looks tired in MI2 is he had infant twins. Part of the film -the Spanish church scene - was filmed really close to to a friend's home here in Sydney.
The weird things my brain remembers.
Thank you for the video! The bonnet looks amazing, and you should totally use it for Mario/Luigi cosplay.
I'm doing a bunch of hand sewing on several projects these days.
I’ve been sewing and cleaning my room in prep for my new work at home jobs
Sounds great!
I thought I would never wear a bonnet because I can't get Handmaid's Tale imagery out of my mind.. But this is perfect. This is a swanky poofy bonnet and I love it! So much potential and nice brim. I pre-ordered the pattern before even seeing your video tonight just because of your instagram photos! So excited. Great work showing this off and making it feel doable.
Oh yay! I hope you love it!!
Loved the bonnet when I saw it on Instagram so great to see it come together! I do not actually sew yet, but this bonnet does look like something I might want to try 🤔
Thank you! 😊 you should try it!
Bonnet looks great! To the end!
Thank you! 😊
Love the bonnet! Looks so good on you! You've made it look so simple! I like it flooffy with the poofs. I like the wide brim. I've been cross stitching a Koi pond (overhead view so one can see the fishes).
Thanks so much! 😊 and that sounds awesome!!!
Cute bonnet! And you are very pretty in it. (I love the music by the way. Old school jazz is the best jazz. IMO of course.)
Yay! Thanks!
I really love that bonnet, it looks so good, and you did an amazing job with the tiny hand stitching!! I've just draped my first pattern, so I'll be onto creating a wearable mock-up when baby naps allow!
Oh yay! That’s awesome!
Since you nicely asked, I am a long time SF fan with some interest in costuming. I am primarily interested in Classic Menswear as well as Victorian and Edwardian era Menswear including the American West of that era.
That’s very cool! Thanks for stopping by and saying hi’
Super cute!! 😊
This is such a cute bonnet! I really like it. I think I will make one for my chemo friend! Thanks
Oh that’s a great idea!
That looks like the super cute lovechild of a sun visor and a newsboy cap 😍
Also, I don't know how you feel about rotary cutters, but you can get some that take a pinking blade if that's any use to you
I’m terrified of them but I do think I should probably get better at using them!
I'm tempted to make one in some kind of novelty print, maybe for a holiday?
@@Costuming_Drama just think of them like a pizza cutter but for fabric. Keep the sharp edge pointing down and moving away from you, and take it slowly, and they aren't too bad. But if you have wrist or hand issues, you might not get on with them because you need continuous downward pressure while pushing them along - they're not a good choice for me these days, for example.
LOVE the hat! It is SOO CUTE! Somewhere on the back back-burner is a hat/headdress I'd like to do: there is a "Summer Theatre 1922" poster of a gal in this headdress holding a necklace. I need everything in that poster. But currently, I am most obsessed (in a thinking-about-it-but-not-thinking-about-it kind of way) with the headdress. I have been mulling over how to make it without making it too heavy, and without making it from actual feathers.
Meanwhile, in real life, I am cataloging my projects -- do they have fabric (picture of it), are they lacking something, what's the pattern, and note the place where they reside until they get done.
I hadn't planned to do this. I planned on putting away the pile -- and maybe re-naming the bins. SO I sorted the pile, and got out the UFO bins and took out the projects that were not UFOs because they were just folded fabric with a note, and finished a few ridiculously easy UFOs because I needed the space, and sorted the UFOs into Cuttings (cut out but not sewn,) Gatherings (projects that are waiting to be cut {and hopefully sewn},) [things that need] One More Thing (a hem, hooks, etc.) and they're done, and, of course, More Questions Than Answers -- a.k.a., the naughty pile.
Then, I decided to put away some errant floral fabric, and that's when the real trouble began. The floral fabric bins had a few large pieces of yardage and LOTS of tiny pieces. Well, of course, the tiny pieces can be folded smaller and put in the decorative boxes like the one-yards (or less,) and if I'm going to do that -- I might as well take any Cuttings or Gatherings and move them to that bin, and if I'm already doing that, I might as well catalog any of the fabric that past me had an idea for and so left a note folded in the fabric -- that way I won't lose track of projects that are just in the idea stage.
Scope-creep, I think Lizscapism called it. 🤷♀I've just been giving mice cookies. I can't hem the three house dresses I could really use right now, cuz I can't reach my machines. My scope creeped all over my tables.
Love the bonnet!!!
I loved the editing you did for this video ❤ It made me giggle. I don't know if it was the satisfying way, you were tapping at a tasks you completed, or the fact that your music made me think of the original Batman theme music 🎶. It was really good. I enjoy all of them, I just extra enjoyed your editing this time.
The bonnet is adorable! I love the poofs.
With joy,
Audri
Oh thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the bonnet🌼
"So I said, Shure!" Mais premier, clean l'atelier!
This is going on my make list!
That is so cute! Love it.
Thank you! 😊
So cute 💖🤩
Great bonnet, great video (loved the pacing and the checklist).
Thanks a bunch!
You look so cute in the bonnet! I love it! I'm considering getting it and then making a whole 1760s outfit to go with it!
You should!
Really cute bonnet. Enjoyed the vid, thank you!
The bonnet is super cute! I'm slowly chugging away on my first two quilt tops and then hopefully getting back to the linen dress I started last year before I got distracted by other things.
You got this!
Fantastic freakin content, as always! Love watching sewing and cleaning at warp speed, it's quite satisfying :)
Glad you enjoy it!
It turned out so good! Looks lovely! ❤️
Thank you!! 😊
Love the bonnet! Definitely buying the pattern when it is out so I can make a couple for my slowly developing regency wardrobe. Also, a Mario brothers themed cosplay would be awesome :)
It’s out now! I think there’s a link in my description, but if not, pennyriver on Etsy has it!
I love the bonnet and the poofs! And the busk is stunning 😍 Also, is it weird that I’m geeking out over the Frixion pen? LoL I have a Rocketbook planner and a pack of multi color pens (because I use ALL THE COLORS) but a friend, who has the same book, has the multi-click pen and loves it
Super cute!
Thank you! 😊
I love this and want to make one for everyday use! It's like a sun visor not sun visor, but also not a baseball cap. No idea why those types of hats both offend me and this one is fine, but hooray for bonnet!
You should! It’s super useful!
Love the bonnet. It's wonderful.
Thank you! 😊
I might have bought a whiteboard for my sewing room just so I can write out my projects and tasks like Noelle.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
You look super cute in the bonnet! I think we all need one!
I've just made my first hat, though a basic modern sunhat (Vogue 8928 view C). I really appreciate your explanation of attaching the brim. That was the one part I just couldn't make sense of while making mine amd had to fudge it. I'm still happy with the result. Made with vintage linen and lined with soft mauve paisley lawn. Such a pleasure to wear in the 30+ temps we are in!
I think so too!
I really love the way this bonnet looks on you. Will definitely be looking for this on penny rivers site.
Oh thank you!
A Super Mario brother's bonnet let alone entire regency outfit would be just too amazing!
I'm working on an insulated vest (which I meant to make before winter was nearing an end!) and I've learned that nylon is slippery and possibly the devil to work with 😆 Would've been easier if I hadn't decided to add extra pockets and welt zippers in three places...whoops.
It sounds like it will be super awesome though!
The bonnet is adorable! I love it - great job :)
Thank you! 😊
Love the bonnet! It’s cute and fun. The pattern looks really good too.
Not much happening around here. I’ve been continuing the cleaning out things in my sewing/craft room. I’ve also been mending grandson is a constant help adding to the pile!
Thank you! 😊
I like the bonnet . You can tuck your hair into it. It like a girly fisherman's cap .
Love this! New here. Wanting to start making clothes from different parts of the 1800's and some 1700's for every day wear. Nothing super fancy.
Nice to meet you! There’s so much good stuff to make during these periods!!
That is the cutest bonnet! Definitely I need to make both the dress and the bonnet now Thank you 😂😁 I have always separated Tom Cruise the actor from Tom Cruise the person and that's okay. I've had a crush on him since 1980 when he did Taps.
You should make them both! And yeah, I have met him a couple times and he’s very nice, but like… yeah. I basically like any movie he’s in, so I’ll keep watching.
Love the bonnet! I think I would like to make one in wool for the winter 👌🏻😍
You should!
Absolutely gorgeous especially the poofy bits. Totally worth the work. (Ps the Scottish guy Dougray Scott is brilliant in Enigma) Really looking forward to your next instalment of the dress.
Real cute🎉
I got a kit for a similar bonnet from Jess on Black Friday and have been putting it together. It iui s such an easy pattern
Your bonnet is adorable!
I've finally finished my embroidered linen dress. Now I'm working on a skirt to wear under it.
Wonderful! I hope it goes smoothly!
@@Costuming_Drama Thanks! I'm hoping to get pictures of everything together soon too.
lovely bonnet sweetie , great video as always
Thank you 🤗
😲Regency Mario... yessssssssss
