The Videos? I use Premiere pro to make all of these! but that's a lot of money and you could get "Davinci Resolve" for free if you wanted to do stuff like this yourself Oh and i use OBS studio to screen record when I need to.
Watched 4 other videos and yours was the only one to actually stop my friends from making fun of my mic settings. Now I actually sound good, thanks for the video.
@@ajsarsfield I just had 1 question if thats ok. It seems when i set my mic gain and hit ok, the mic meter on the goxlr app goes down from 100 to 80% (which shouldnt happen i dun think coz thats separate from the settings) is that just a common goxlr app bug?
Thank you so much for all your knowledge with XLR. Most people just go through the settings and for someone like me who has no clue how audio works. You're explanations were clear and concise and helped me understand how to set it up. Thank you!
I always got annoyed when people are like "heres MY settinga and This is exactly what you need to do" When in reality everyone voice n room is different. so I like to Include a bit of education so people can tweak settings if they arent 100% happy with what I do.. Got to support a fellow English Northman! I remember following you on tiktok sometime around 2020/2021 im sure and its staggering that you haven't received the attention that your production quality and effort absolutely deserves. There's a few people on the internet that you just trust when ever they say something, MKBHD, Harris and Heller etc. and for me you're absolutely in this bracket. Keep up the great work mate!
I'm so glad to hear that!! 🥳 Honestly I struggled with it too for the longest time... Until I got to this setup recently and everything just seemed to click!
Thank you so much!! 🥰 I noticed a lot of these tutorials told you What to do, but never why or how it worked. I wanted to try and add a bit more detail so people can take my guidelines and then tweak it for themselves!! Glad it was helpful 💕
God bless you brother. I have been dealing with mic trouble forever and spent money on alot of equipment and you got me sounding great. When I got my shure sm7 it sounded better but after watchig your vid i can hear the improvement. Love you brother. fan 4 life
Thank you so much!!! I had a similar experience when I first got all this equipment too 🙃 so I'm just glad I can help others improve their audio now I've figured it out a bit better 🔥
Thank You! I'm just glad I managed to help a bit! 🔥 I was in a similar situation, spent all that money on the Mic and didn't like how it sounded at first! 🙃
That's so great to hear!! I recently upped My Deesser to 30 as well (previously 20) I was having issues with S's n Ts being too harsh. That extra 10 helped
I'm so glad it worked out!! I have a K688 too and I basically used the same settings as well when I was testing that out... the only change i made was I think I didn't add as much Treble in the EQ settings (For my voice) but other than that pretty much the same!
Thanks a lot mate for this amazing eq , i was about to get the rode rodecaster pro 2 just for the radio broadcast effect 🤩 after following your eq step by step the results were amazing ❤
@@ajsarsfield i totally agree with you 👍 there is no need to spend more when you have almost the exact same results unless you need more XLR inputs or maybe a standalone mixer with different presets that doesn't need a pc or a software to function 😄
EXACTLY! That was my initial issue too! You'd think the compressor would help but for some reason even with that on, if your gain is a bit too high to start with it just ends up sounding bad... I'm so glad you found it useful!
Haha! The algorithm knows us too well! 🔥 Hope it works out well for you! 1 thing I've SLIGHTLY changed over the last 6 months, is dropping my compressor ratio down to 4:1 instead of the 5.6:1 as I think it sound a bit more natural.. (Subjective though) But other than that, it's all the same.
Amazing video... Very informative and useful :) The cool thing is that you also explained the why in the settings, so it makes much more sense and it does not sound "magical".
That's 1 issue I always had with these types of tutorials.. People always tell you WHAT to do and never why to do it.. But audio is subjective, so knowing a bit of the why means you can tweak things bettwr for your own voice! Glad it was useful 🥰
This is a great baseline to start from, but I can't stress enough how much more you can get from it by tweaking your eq to match your own voice. Different voices are complimented by different settings and you should really focus on bringing out your own tone
Thank YOU.. I'm glad it was useful.. 🔥 Noise gates are one of those Filters where Most people tell you What to set it as but never tell you WHY., so if their settings don't work you don't know how to fix it lol
Hope it helps!! 🔥 Since making this video (a year later) 1 thing I'd maybe change is have the compressor ratio at 4:1 rather than 5.6 like I suggested. IMO 5.6 is a bit too compressed and flat. 4:1 Ratio still sounds good but has a bit more emotion/energy to it, especially when you get excited. (Test both see what you prefer)
Its not needed but it can help if you have to have the HIGHEST quality possible for your content. I've used it with and without and nobody has ever noticed the difference 😅 I think if you're just streaming or making YT videos it doesn't really matter, but if you're doing a podcast or something more Audio specific then it might help. Personally I would test it out without first and see how you feel before buying the Cloudlifter
I already had semi decent settings on my mic but they felt outdated, copied your settings fully and the sound of my voice is better suited to my uses also, thankyou :)
Honestly I'm so glad to hear that.. I had a nightmare trying to figure this out for myself and my voice so I'm glad others are also finding it useful too! 🔥
HAPPY TO! 🥰 I know a lot of other tutorials who explain WHAT you should do but never why or what the actual settings are doing... So I thought I'd at least Try and explain them so you can tweak it a bit for YOUR specific setups 🔥💕
Thanks for this video, it sure taught me few things. However, I keep hearing in your video that background noise especially the moment you stop talking, there is this hissing sound. Why does that happen and how can you get rid of it?
is it the noise you get when set above 50db on the gain?… I can actually hear the same on this video throughout… and I’ve got that too (sounds horrible and very noticeable with the gate)… been on their DC channel to troubleshoot… I initially used the EQ and went -9 on 8khz… not fantastic, but it’s the GoXLR gain that’s making the noise… so let’s make the mic input stronger to avoid using the GoXLR gain… so I used a Fet on the mic and then used the +48v mode on GoXLR… so instead of 60db gain, I’m using 30db (or less), this change = less noise from the GoXLR 😊
Thank you so much for making this video! I really added most of your settings and will test it out. Atleast it changed alot of my settings. That mic volume at start you mentioned I have it now 55 but like you said with more than that it did not felt really right. I really pressed that like as well
Appreciate it!! Yeah! too many people (me included) had the gain too high to start with and it just gets worse from there.. So starting a little lower and bringing it up makes things just sound "Cleaner" Thanks for watching 🔥
There's loads of different options these days BUT I'd go 1 of two ways... More expensive one is a Rodecaster Duo, Has 2 USB-C Outputs 1 for each PC... brandstore.rode.com/products/white-rodecaster-duo-b-cable?sca_ref=4597939.DjxTL3OI0Y Amazon link - amzn.to/3Ui1LuY Or the Elgato Wave XLR which had an update recently so it can easily send Mic audio over the HDMI capture card you're using, Slightly less Features but it's like £300 cheaper elgato.sjv.io/Owl-XLR (Can get 5% off the Elgato store with my partner code ZZ- NIGHTOWL) or from amazon - amzn.to/3vTZCfw Wave XLR How to guide - help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/23241648272525-Elgato-Wave-Link-Output-Stream-Mix-to-hardware-device
@@ajsarsfield would you not recommend or would you recommend the go xlr or go xlr mini over those 2 options you mentioned ? At the moment I’m using a rodecaster pro with the elgato capture card but it’s a bit hard to get it to work on dual pc setup more with the audio. I can’t hear my gameplay from my pc . I use a steelseries nova pro which has 2 usb , 1 connected on each of but it can only change to one usb so I have it on the streaming pc but it is confusing and doesn’t pick the audio up and have it recorded or in the stream as well I’m not sure if I’m suppose to have the headphone plugged in the rodecaster pro but it has its own amplifier What would you advise ?
You can!! The 2 devices have the same preamps and most of the same filters. The ONLY differences are the Minis EQ has less "bands" And youre missing a De-esser Which isn't a huge issue.
@@ajsarsfield im having an issue were mic sounds good but if i get a little louder my voice almost like rumbles , if i lower gain then its too quiet on stream. Anything i could do to sound more booming with out rumbling?
OBS STUDIO audio mixer.. I just popped it out and overlayed it on top of the GOXLR software.. Figured most people would also use OBS studio or "SLABS" so it'd be accessible to use.. (Should have explained that better in the video) 🤭🙃
Assuming you haven't bought an interface or Mixer for it it yet?? If you can afford it buy an elgato wave XLR and a streamdeck +.. That's what I'm doing soon, it'll replace pretty much everything that the GoXLR can do Including have physical dials for controlling volume etc.. If you cant afford both then the Wave XLR will be fine for now.. you just won't have the physical controls n stuff so you'll have to do everything via software on the PC You'll still be able to do all the same effects n stuff in my tutorial just on different software.. (I'll be making an updated video when I switch over!)
Oh! The Sm7db uses basocally the same audio capsule so the setting SHOULD be the same.. The only difference is it has an inbuilt mic activator/"cloudlifter" So instead of needing like 50-55db for the input gain Youd only need 30-35 instead. Depends how loud you talk though
Thank you, your video was really informative and helpful. I actually put all my settings the same as the ones you use (I figured why not give it a go lol), and I'm looking forward to testing it. I am actually in radio and often do my show from home, so I am already set up for that. My son and I are getting back into streaming together (from separate locations) after a long hiatus. This time, I want to use my work setup (Shure SM7b/ GoXLR) for our streams (it's agony for me to listen to our audio when I have to use my gaming headset mic). I am actually looking for more specific help with adding my game console audio to the mix. My son's computer is the host for the stream, so I don't use OBS on my end, which changes my specific help needs. Do you have any content that might help?
I don't specifically have any content about that.. (yet) BUT if you're using the GoXLR to capture audio (depends on the console you're playing) but you could connect the console to the GoXLR as an input either via optical in or Line in etc. That way you should be able to still hear the game through your headphone monitoring + because the GoXLR has a "broadcast" mix.. you should be able to send your microphone + game sound out to your son at the same time . it just gets a bit more difficult if you want to send them to a different location as 2 separate audio streams, but I'm sure someone on RUclips would have a solution for that lol
Pretty much everything should be the same BUT the EQ might be slightly different... For a higher pitched or Female voice then the bass frequencies need adjusting, as well as maybe the high end not being pushed up as much It'd take some trial/error on your specific voice BUT Id go for something like 100hz - -5db (removes Hums and rumbles lower than your voice) 250hz - +2db (slightly boosts the bass in your voice) 500hz - -3db ( cuts out "boxy" noises sounds flat if left in) 2000hz - 0db 3500hz - +1 (Clarity helps cut through BG music/game etc) 8000hz - -3db (avoids Harsh S and T sounds "Siblance") 12000hz - +3db (Airy sounds) 18000hz- +1db ( also Air its almost high enough we cant hear it BUT these frequencies can add a nice "Sparkle" to voices) Obviously this is all generalisations and SHOULD be tweaked for YOUR voice..
@@ajsarsfield duuude thankyou for such a detailed response! there's literally NO videos for female streamers and voice settings, its all podcast man voice (which is delicious but doesn't apply) I just tried this out and it sounds SOOO much better and highlights the good parts of my voice! wow
I'm SO glad it helped 🥰 I really should make a dedicated video about these settings at some point 🤭 I know how little advice is out there for higher pitched / Fem voices 💕
Same settings in this video for all the other filters but the EQ will be a tiny bit different as the mini only has 6 bands.. So If i had a Mini id probably do something like this... 30hz -2 125hz +2 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +3 12Khz +5 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
I had the GoXLR for a bit and I loved it but I noticed the headphone monitoring was kinda bad. I couldn’t hear myself hardly as I talked and felt I had to talk much louder than I needed so that I could hear myself. I switched to the focusrite but maybe I’ll switch back and see if I can make some fixes
THE SM7DB is obviously better but it costs a fair bit more than the original.. So it Depends on your budget, interface & use case.. With a GoXLR and for streaming etc a standard SM7B will be fine especially when mixed in the music/gameplay... That's what I used for years (even without a cloudlifter)
@@ajsarsfield I would be using it for RUclips videos. I use my voiceover to make rehearsal type videos. I'm in doubt I don't want to add extra gain on the GOXLR because it would add background noise, I think I should buy the SM7dB and thus add less gain on the interface avoiding noise. Thanks mate, amazing vídeo
What audio mixer do you use so that you can hear your voice? Previously, I was using VoiceMeeter, but after I upgraded to GoXLR, I still connected with VoiceMeeter (I know it's dumb) since I didn't know what software could give me voice feedback since I am using a wireless headset. Please help. Thank you
Hell yeah! We love to hear it 🔥 . I had so many issues trying to figure out a good setup for this when I first got an SM7B... I'm just happy other people found the settings I use now useful
Hello, I found this video very helpful. I have a question if I may - What Input Volume should the Broadcast Stream Mix be set at? In WIN 11 this is found in System>Sound>All sound devices>Properties. Mine is set at 48 currently. Thank you!
I'm still on windows 10 so it might be different. But I always left the Go XLR's input at 100 in windows and just controlled all the volume using the Microphone Gain and Faders etc
I probably should have covered that. But I forgot the Mini has less EQ bands than the full size 🙃 Rest of it should be the Same settings as this video for the other filters but the EQ will be a tiny bit different... I'd probably do something like this... 30hz -2 125hz +2 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +2 12Khz +3 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
Oh!! The meter isn't actually in the GOXLR. (Probably should have explained that in the video) But I was using OBS studio Audio meters to measure/demonstrate the audio levels in this video.. I just overlaid them on top in editing.. Any audio recording software should have meters like that though.. Obs studio Audacity Voicemeeter Premiere pro Davinci etc Most people live stream with this setup so I figured OBS would be the best example to demo this with
is there any way you could upload your settings to somewhere so people could download them? thanks a lot. Since my settings somehow are being reset quite often
My mic is making a static noise when I talk :( when I turn the gain (54dB), the sizzling is louder but if I turn it down I think my mic is too low. I also have a Shure SM7B & GoXLR. At least even at 54dB the mic meter goes very little past the middle of Low so I didn't want to turn it down any more.
Hey 🙋🏼♂️ Few questions; Is your mic setup nice n close to your mouth? (Fist distance away) If not then get closer if possible! If you're too far away all these settings will just make background noise and hiss/hums etc louder too! 2ndly if possible try to make sure your XLR cables aren't touching power cables or have too many other devices nearby I had an issue a while ago where I was getting a constant buzzing/hum becsuse my Mic cable was touching loads of wires and it was causing interference.. (Potentially even plug the goxlr into a different outlet) Also I HATE GoXLRs audio meters I find them to be really bad at accurately setting your levels, hence why I prefer using OBS or audacity or any other recording software so I can see the actual DB level of my mic. If you can, ignore the GoXLR meters and Try and set your gain while looking at OBS etc instead of the Inbuilt Low/Mid/high meter. set it so it hits around -12db (mid orange in default OBS) And then from there you're going to bring up the volume with filters like a compressor etc later on.. Also in this video I mention setting your clmpressor to a 5.6 ratio.. but since making this I actually switched to a 4:1 ratio instead as IMO it sounds better and cleaner.. Outside of these suggested "fixes" testing different cables might help, (XLR & USB) or if all else fails contacting TCHelicon directly as your SM7B shouldn't be "sizzling" especially when you arent anywhere near maxing out the preamps.. They have a pretty active discord I think 🤔 I hope you managed to figure out your issues 💕
Oh do you have a Mini? Minis only have 6 Band EQ's . You can click on the numbers and type them manually.. . If i had a Mini id probably do something like this... 30hz -2 125hz +3 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +3 12Khz +6 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
This kind of stuff is super hard for me for a few different reasons. I chose to invest in a RE20, and there aren't many videos covering those that are like this. I have a GOXLR mini, so i don't have as many options, and i just don't understand how to really discover my ideal settings for my voice. I think you did a great job describing everything, but i don't know what to switch and how high/low i should make specific settings to match my voice. It doesn't really help i don't have much sound proofing either, so everything sounds pretty bad to begin with. TLDR it's a struggle
As far as i know the RE20 (great mic) has less of a proximity effect.. ( less bass emphasis) SO you probably don't have to remove bass or add much Top end to the EQ as i have done to the SM7B.. I think i replied to someone else here for the "mini" settings I'd use for the SM7b So for the RE20 I'd probably go for something like this; (RE20 switch Flat) 65hz +2 ( sub bass) 125hz +4 (Bass) 0.5hz 0 (Mids) 1Khz 0 4Khz +2 (Treble) 8Khz +4 This is kinda guess work as i don't have an RE20 to test but i know it has less bass and more Treble than the SM7b as well as a built in "mid" cut so. these settings should be a decent baseline that you can hopefully tweak to fit YOUR voice.
obviously audio is kinda subkective.. and what i like might be different towhat YOU like... BUT The best way to see what Frequencies do, is to put ALL the EQ to 0 and then listen as you Raise each band individually, so you can hear what its doing to your voice... Then you can kinda figure out whether to add or take away those sounds from YOUR voice. ( by how much specifically might be a bit of trial n error)
Low as in volume?? The GoXLR Mini has the same preamps as the full size GoXLR.. So all the settings etc should be the same as this video... The only real difference is less EQ bands and you lose a De-Esser 🤔
Nah... They can help a BIT but the GoXLR has like 70db of Gain available and the SM7B only needs aboit 50-55db to be loud enough, so for online distribution you don't really need one.. If you're doing HIGH end audio stuff.. Voice actor Musician Audio only podcast etc then maybe its worth it but for live streams or YT vids it's not
OMG I completely forgot that the mini gets less bands... Yeah unfortunately you only get 6 instead, compared to the Full size one... in that case, i'd go for something like 30hz -2 125hz +3 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +3 12Khz +6 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice will be different to mine.
Oh! I was using OBS studio.. I just popped out their Audio meters so I could check what I was changing.. But any recording software will have something similar Audacity Streamlabs Premiere pro Davinci Etc
Thanks a lot for this video, however my equalizer settings look really different to yours. It ranges from 90Hz, to 160, 480, 1.5Khz, 4.5 and then 7.8, what can I do for these?
@@AsydixEditsI replied to someone else about this recently 🤭 You can actually click on the numbers at the top of the EQ and change the Frequencies to whatever you want If i had a Mini id probably do something like this... 30hz -2 125hz +3 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +3 12Khz +6 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine.
Do I need a 2i2 scarlet interface because if I want the helicon go xlr and the shure sm7b it would be mic arm then mic extender then microphone then go xlr cable then cloud lifter then xlr cable then helicon go xlr then all the cords to hook up to it
No not at all!! The GoXLR is basically an interface & a mixer all rolled into one.. So all you need is the GOXLR & SM7B technically ( the preamps are good enough to power it) I've used it both with and without cloudlifters and barely noticed a difference for online work like RUclips or Live streaming etc Especially when its mixed with music and gameplay...
quick question what software are you using for the audio mixer sound levels been looking around online can seem to work out what software your using so detect sound levels, im talking about the software your running over the top of the goxlr app, if anyone knows what software this is please let me know
Oh! (I really should have said on the video) But the specific one I was using was actually the audio meters from "OBS studio" Which is mostly designed for live streaming or screen recording etc But if you just need audio meters/recording software something like "Audacity" would work too 🔥 (Both are free)
I have a few different ones.. For gaming I use steel series arctis Pro wireless But if I want a bit higher quality for video editing etc. I use Sennheiser 598s or my Rode NTH100s
Oh! Minis only have 6 Band EQ's instead.. (Probably should have covered this in the video 🙃) If i had a Mini id probably do something like this... 30hz -2 125hz +3 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +2 12Khz +5 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
Tbh I basically use the same filter setup as this but in OBS instead...🔥 I do have another video Walking through how I set them all up in OBS if that helps? ruclips.net/video/jGsbi34um70/видео.htmlsi=_xLY6uao9XXhY4K3
You could try putting the noise gate attenuation at about 75% instead.. 🤔 That way it's not going from completely silent to suddenly on instead it's just going from very quiet to louder
Sorry I really should have explained that better...🙃 I popped it out of OBS and just had it on top of the goxlr software so I could see/ show the levels
The full EQ? If you can't see all the bands and you only see 3 there should be an arrow on the right hand side... press it and it'll open up the rest of the filters etc... If you only have the go xlr mini.. that only has 6 bands vs 10 on the full size ... So in that case, i'd go for something like 30hz -2 125hz +3 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +3 12Khz +6 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice will be different to mine.
Oooh ignore me.. you mean the Audio bars so you could see the volume etc? That's just OBS Audio meters I popped them out of obs and placed it on top of the go xlr software.. I assumed most people would be using this for OBS etc so i used their meters to demo the volume etc... Just have obs and Goxlr open at the same time so you can see them!
The full size and the mini both have the same Pre amps built in, so you don't "need" one for it to sound good.. A cloud lifter Might marginally improve audio quality (you'd drop input gain from 50db to 30db ish) but if you're only streaming on twitch and its being mixed with game audio, music etc 99% of people wont notice, so it wont be worth the purchase anyway
I just found out that the GoXlr now wont be getting anymore updates and i just bought mine last year and just a new computer yesterday!! I know the last update was in Beta so do u have a link or anything that can help me? I heard there are some 3rd party people working on updates 4 linux but im window!!! 😢
Sadly there's no updates on the software yet... (just the github Linux stuff) However thankfully our GoXLR's will still work for a while as they are.. as long as Windows or some other company doesn't randomly update software that stops it... I've been advising people to eventually get a Streamdeck+ when they can 'Cause that comes with elgatos wavelink software.. And that means you can use the GoXLR as JUST a XLR microphone interface.. but control all your audio with elgatos software (which is arguably better anyway) Obviously it's an extra expense but it's something to look into when you can afford it.. (That's what I'll be doing) I spoke to Elgatos GM and their support team and they confirmed all of this should work together.
@@ajsarsfield I've got a reg stream deck already I didn't get the plus because I figured I had the just bought the GoXlr!! Ugh this is a mess lol but I'm glad I found ur channel. now which GoXlr software should I download for my brand new gaming computer I just got yesterday? I'm on their page now
Same! I have the 15 Key one.. and now I'll have to switch to the + at some point 🙃 . . GoXLR website should just have a "GoXLR app" to download.. ( i think its from april 2021)? and once its downloaded n installed go into the GoXLR app settings and click software update just to check its the latest version.. Itll work fine but obviously you won't be getting any more updates after whatever you download now.. Not until the open source app comes out anyway 🙃
Hi! Have a question, I have the Mino GO X LR so when I get to the equalizer part I see I dont have those options, I just have 6, what can I do? Thanks!
I completely forgot the mini only had 6 bands when making this... If i had a Mini id probably do something like this... 30hz -2 125hz +3 0.5hz -2 2Khz 0 4Khz +3 12Khz +6 but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
Its not necessarily "bad" but I'd probably say your input gain is too low (Or compressor is too strong) if you have to add that much extra gain to get it to a good level! For my SM7B my input is usually around 50-55db (without a cloudlifter) And then make up gain is usually around 7 or 8 once I've added a compressor etc 🤔
@@ajsarsfield i feel like my compressor is too strong the threshold is -25 with a ratio of 5.6:1. how about your physical device you know the sliders on it? do u have the mic slider all the way up? i am satisfied with the sound of the mic my gain is 66db im thinking of tweaking it a little and lowering it and try to find a way to still hit that 12db mark because 66db gives me a bit of background noise
On the mixer?? Yup always full.. I add a limiter in OBS though (or loudmax) Made a video on that plugin too but a limiter etc helps avoid any peaking usually set mine around -5db And then I obviously balance background music /game audio below that
I really should have explained that better haha 😅 I popped it out of OBS and just had it on top of the GOXLR software so I could see the levels as I made changes! 💕

There's a few people on the internet that you just trust when ever they say something, MKBHD, Harris and Heller etc. and for me you're absolutely in this bracket. Keep up the great work mate!
AMAZING TUTORIAL. I've watched countless videos and was ready to give up on this combo but now my mic sounds perfect, thank you so much!
I'm so glad to hear that!! 🥳
Honestly I struggled with it too for the longest time...
Until I got to this setup recently and everything just seemed to click!
Your explanation was amazingly clear to understand especially for people who don't know much about audio configurations!
Thank you so much!! 🥰
I noticed a lot of these tutorials told you What to do, but never why or how it worked.
I had a similar experience when I first got all this equipment too 🙃
so I'm just glad I can help others improve their audio now I've figured it out a bit better 🔥
thank god i found this video, i hope my videos sound better from here on out.
AMAZING VIDEO ive been working with this mic for years and hated it until now. thank you, finally. i'll remember u forever
Thank You!
I'm just glad I managed to help a bit! 🔥
I was in a similar situation, spent all that money on the Mic and didn't like how it sounded at first! 🙃
ty master!! i did step by step, i only put 30 on the dresser because i speak mainly spanish, all my friends instantly told me that sound like podcast!
That's so great to hear!!
I recently upped My Deesser to 30 as well (previously 20)
I was having issues with S's n Ts being too harsh. That extra 10 helped
great videos and tutorial what audio mixer software are you using
Thanks for this! I followed this for my GoXLR Mini and a FiFine K688 Dynamic mic and it came out perfect for me!
I'm so glad it helped!! 🔥
RODECASTER is great too but obviously no need to spend more money if you don't have to.
@@ajsarsfield i totally agree with you 👍 there is no need to spend more when you have almost the exact same results unless you need more XLR inputs or maybe a standalone mixer with different presets that doesn't need a pc or a software to function 😄
Helped me out a ton here. I have the same setup and was boosting too much for the initial gain, bringing it back with makeup was game-changing for me.
EXACTLY! That was my initial issue too!
You'd think the compressor would help but for some reason even with that on, if your gain is a bit too high to start with it just ends up sounding bad...
I'm so glad you found it useful!
This video is perfect for me as I just bought the microphone and I am English and in fact northern. Cheers pal
Haha! The algorithm knows us too well! 🔥
Hope it works out well for you!
1 thing I've SLIGHTLY changed over the last 6 months, is dropping my compressor ratio down to 4:1 instead of the 5.6:1 as I think it sound a bit more natural..
(Subjective though)
But other than that, it's all the same.
I literally did your exact settings and I sound so much better. You da bomb!!!
I'm so glad to hear that!
There's so many settings and filters, that it can be overwhelming & confusing setting it all up..
I'm happy it helped! 🔥
finally got around to trying out your settings with some tweaks for my own voice, and so far it sounds pretty nice! Thanks a bunch bud!
Everyone's voice is different so it will need those minor tweaks!
but I'm glad it's got you to a good place so far!
🔥
1000% agree
Its impossible for anyone to give a
"One size fits all" Eq settings
So people need to take these and tweak them for their own voice 🔥
Thank you for this. Your explanation of the noise gate really helped me out today.
Thank YOU.. I'm glad it was useful.. 🔥
Noise gates are one of those Filters where Most people tell you What to set it as but never tell you WHY.,
so if their settings don't work you don't know how to fix it lol
I cant wait to try this out. My currently sounds horrible.
Hope it helps!! 🔥
Since making this video (a year later)
1 thing I'd maybe change is have the compressor ratio at 4:1 rather than 5.6 like I suggested.
IMO 5.6 is a bit too compressed and flat.
4:1 Ratio still sounds good but has a bit more emotion/energy to it, especially when you get excited.
(Test both see what you prefer)
Amazing Settings, so clear and strong, thx my Friend, ang big Greetz from Germany
Great vid. Not sure if I missed it or not, do you use a cloud lifter with this setup? Is it needed?
Its not needed but it can help if you have to have the HIGHEST quality possible for your content.
I've used it with and without and nobody has ever noticed the difference 😅
I think if you're just streaming or making YT videos it doesn't really matter, but if you're doing a podcast or something more Audio specific then it might help.
🔥
Really well made video, Really detailed explaining every single thing. Appreciate the work !
Thank you so much! 🥳
I know how difficult setting up audio can be for some people..
I'm just glad others are finding it useful 🔥
Love this - thanks for explaining the settings!
HAPPY TO! 🥰
I know a lot of other tutorials who explain WHAT you should do but never why or what the actual settings are doing...
Great video! Helped me out a bunch
Thank you!! I'm glad it was useful ^_^
go xlr causing static like hiss only when talking would u happen to know how to fix that
is it the noise you get when set above 50db on the gain?… I can actually hear the same on this video throughout… and I’ve got that too (sounds horrible and very noticeable with the gate)… been on their DC channel to troubleshoot… I initially used the EQ and went -9 on 8khz… not fantastic, but it’s the GoXLR gain that’s making the noise… so let’s make the mic input stronger to avoid using the GoXLR gain… so I used a Fet on the mic and then used the +48v mode on GoXLR… so instead of 60db gain, I’m using 30db (or less), this change = less noise from the GoXLR 😊
Very helpful, mic sounds fantastic, thank you.
So glad it was useful!!
🔥💕
Thank you so much for making this video! I really added most of your settings and will test it out. Atleast it changed alot of my settings. That mic volume at start you mentioned I have it now 55 but like you said with more than that it did not felt really right. I really pressed that like as well
Appreciate it!!
Yeah!
too many people (me included) had the gain too high to start with and it just gets worse from there..
So starting a little lower and bringing it up makes things just sound "Cleaner"
Thanks for watching 🔥
Nice video, considering having a dual pc setup . What mixer would you recommend in 2024 that will be best for dual pc streaming and easy to setup?
There's loads of different options these days BUT
I'd go 1 of two ways...
More expensive one is a Rodecaster Duo,
Has 2 USB-C Outputs 1 for each PC...

Or the Elgato Wave XLR which had an update recently so it can easily send Mic audio over the HDMI capture card you're using, Slightly less Features but it's like £300 cheaper

I use a steelseries nova pro which has 2 usb , 1 connected on each of but it can only change to one usb so I have it on the streaming pc but it is confusing and doesn’t pick the audio up and have it recorded or in the stream as well
I’m not sure if I’m suppose to have the headphone plugged in the rodecaster pro but it has its own amplifier
What would you advise ?
Really great overview on the settings 👌
Thank you!!
I hope it was useful 🔥
You are AWESOME!!! Thank you so much. This helped so so much!!
I'm so glad it helped!!
Took me forever to figure out how to make this sound good 😅💕
Hey love the content! Would u say you can get the same sound out of the mini vs the regular goxlr?
You can!!
The 2 devices have the same preamps and most of the same filters.
The ONLY differences are the Minis EQ has less "bands"
And youre missing a De-esser
Which isn't a huge issue.
@@ajsarsfield im having an issue were mic sounds good but if i get a little louder my voice almost like rumbles , if i lower gain then its too quiet on stream. Anything i could do to sound more booming with out rumbling?
Wonderful insight. Thank you!

The SM7B is a fantastic mic.. but surprisingly its not ideal for EVERY Voice
Which voices would you say it doesn't fit and do you know of any alternatives? The yeti just isn't clean for me
@@LocdnessMomster If you have more of a high pitched voice it doesnt fit, the NTA A1 would fit better for higher voices.
Amazing video!! Quick question, would a Rhode Pod Mic setup be similar?
Very similar!!
You'd Probably need less High end in the EQ for a podmic..
But an EQ is always subjective anyway..
everyone's voice is a bit different
I have a goxlr mini, and the Shure SM7B. For some reason I can't get this weird buzzing sound to go away when using it. Any tips?
Thanks bro, this helped me out a lot!
No problem!!
I'm glad it helped 🔥
You may want to put on the big round foam cap that came in the box. Your plosives are pretty spicy.
Thanks..
I'll see if I can find where I put it 🤭
Thank you so much man great video

Sm7b is a fantastic mic but it's so easy to set it up badly 😅
You got my sub brother, brilliant video
Appreciate it!!!
Glad it was useful...
I struggled with this setup myself for a while 🙃
best video the i came across
What is the audio mixer you used to gauge your levels and how did you overlay it?
OBS STUDIO audio mixer..
I just popped it out and overlayed it on top of the GOXLR software..
Figured most people would also use OBS studio or "SLABS" so it'd be accessible to use..
(Should have explained that better in the video) 🤭🙃
I use OBS so this is perfect! Thank you for the quick response!
getting an sm7b soon, just wanted to know if there is any way i can replicate this same effect without using a goxlr?
Assuming you haven't bought an interface or Mixer for it it yet??
If you can afford it buy an elgato wave XLR and a streamdeck +..
That's what I'm doing soon, it'll replace pretty much everything that the GoXLR can do
Including have physical dials for controlling volume etc..
If you cant afford both then the Wave XLR will be fine for now.. you just won't have the physical controls n stuff so you'll have to do everything via software on the PC
You'll still be able to do all the same effects n stuff in my tutorial just on different software..
(I'll be making an updated video when I switch over!)
awesome. I don't really mind controlling volume and effects and such via software, so this works. I'll look into both.
thank you!
Hello, you can make a video where you show the settings for the SM7dB or you can put the same parameters
Oh!
The Sm7db uses basocally the same audio capsule so the setting SHOULD be the same..
The only difference is it has an inbuilt mic activator/"cloudlifter"
So instead of needing like 50-55db for the input gain
Youd only need 30-35 instead.
Depends how loud you talk though
thank you very much for your response, the best settings, it works wonderfully @@ajsarsfield
(yet) BUT
if you're using the GoXLR to capture audio (depends on the console you're playing) but you could connect the console to the GoXLR as an input either via optical in or Line in etc.
That way you should be able to still hear the game through your headphone monitoring + because the GoXLR has a "broadcast" mix.. you should be able to send your microphone + game sound out to your son at the same time .
it just gets a bit more difficult if you want to send them to a different location as 2 separate audio streams, but I'm sure someone on RUclips would have a solution for that lol
ayyy this was a great video thankyou my dude! i wonder if there's any pointers for womens voices? or if the same kind of thing applies
Pretty much everything should be the same BUT the EQ might be slightly different...
For a higher pitched or Female voice then the bass frequencies need adjusting, as well as maybe the high end not being pushed up as much
It'd take some trial/error on your specific voice
BUT
Id go for something like
100hz - -5db (removes Hums and rumbles lower than your voice)
250hz - +2db (slightly boosts the bass in your voice)
500hz - -3db ( cuts out "boxy" noises sounds flat if left in)
2000hz - 0db
3500hz - +1 (Clarity helps cut through BG music/game etc)
8000hz - -3db (avoids Harsh S and T sounds "Siblance")
12000hz - +3db (Airy sounds)
18000hz- +1db ( also Air its almost high enough we cant hear it BUT these frequencies can add a nice "Sparkle" to voices)
Obviously this is all generalisations and SHOULD be tweaked for YOUR voice..
@@ajsarsfield duuude thankyou for such a detailed response! there's literally NO videos for female streamers and voice settings, its all podcast man voice (which is delicious but doesn't apply)
I just tried this out and it sounds SOOO much better and highlights the good parts of my voice! wow
I'm SO glad it helped 🥰
I really should make a dedicated video about these settings at some point 🤭
I know how little advice is out there for higher pitched / Fem voices 💕
What setting should be made so that the voice sounds clear and from the radio? btw I have sm7b with GO XLR mini :)
Same settings in this video for all the other filters but the EQ will be a tiny bit different as the mini only has 6 bands..
So If i had a Mini id probably do something like this...
30hz -2
125hz +2
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +3
12Khz +5
but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
@@ajsarsfield Thanks, I'll try!
Absolute LEGEND
Do you do you recommend shure SM7B or SM7dB?
THE SM7DB is obviously better but it costs a fair bit more than the original..
So it Depends on your budget, interface & use case..
With a GoXLR and for streaming etc a standard SM7B will be fine especially when mixed in the music/gameplay...
That's what I used for years (even without a cloudlifter)
@@ajsarsfield I would be using it for RUclips videos. I use my voiceover to make rehearsal type videos. I'm in doubt
I don't want to add extra gain on the GOXLR because it would add background noise, I think I should buy the SM7dB and thus add less gain on the interface avoiding noise.
Thank you

Hell yeah!
We love to hear it 🔥

I had so many issues trying to figure out a good setup for this when I first got an SM7B...
I'm just happy other people found the settings I use now useful
Hello, I found this video very helpful. I have a question if I may - What Input Volume should the Broadcast Stream Mix be set at? In WIN 11 this is found in System>Sound>All sound devices>Properties. Mine is set at 48 currently. Thank you!
I'm still on windows 10 so it might be different.
But I always left the Go XLR's input at 100 in windows and just controlled all the volume using the Microphone Gain and Faders etc
is there a video like this but with the goXLR mini..?
or in other words how would i set up the equalizer on my GOxlr mini to match yours
I probably should have covered that. But I forgot the Mini has less EQ bands than the full size 🙃
Rest of it should be the Same settings as this video for the other filters
but the EQ will be a tiny bit different...
I'd probably do something like this...
30hz -2
125hz +2
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +2
12Khz +3

HI there Just bought my self SM7B and GOXLR as i watched your vid and you showed the audio mixer meter moving where do i find that ?
Oh!!
The meter isn't actually in the GOXLR.
(Probably should have explained that in the video)
But I was using OBS studio Audio meters to measure/demonstrate the audio levels in this video..
I just overlaid them on top in editing..
Any audio recording software should have meters like that though..
Obs studio
Audacity
Voicemeeter
Premiere pro
Davinci etc
Most people live stream with this setup so I figured OBS would be the best example to demo this with
@@ajsarsfield Ah i see no worries i will use obs for this set up thanks for the video helps really a lot .
PERFECT thank you.
I wished I could have a goxlr and a shure mic 😢
ME too tbh...
My cat Spilled Coffee on this one and now it doesn't work, haha
F's in Chat!
amazing video thank you
Thanks so much!!
Glad you found it helpful!
is there any way you could upload your settings to somewhere so people could download them? thanks a lot.
Hey 🙋🏼♂️
Few questions;
Is your mic setup nice n close to your mouth?
(Fist distance away)
If not then get closer if possible!
If you're too far away all these settings will just make background noise and hiss/hums etc louder too!
2ndly if possible try to make sure your XLR cables aren't touching power cables or have too many other devices nearby
I had an issue a while ago where I was getting a constant buzzing/hum becsuse my Mic cable was touching loads of wires and it was causing interference..
(Potentially even plug the goxlr into a different outlet)
Also I HATE GoXLRs audio meters
I find them to be really bad at accurately setting your levels, hence why I prefer using OBS or audacity or any other recording software so I can see the actual DB level of my mic.
If you can, ignore the GoXLR meters and Try and set your gain while looking at OBS etc instead of the Inbuilt Low/Mid/high meter. set it so it hits around -12db (mid orange in default OBS)
And then from there you're going to bring up the volume with filters like a compressor etc later on..
They have a pretty active discord I think 🤔
I hope you managed to figure out your issues 💕
@@ajsarsfield Thank you so mic for responding!! I’ll definitely try out all of these suggestions! Thank you for the video as well! Peace and love 🙏❤️
I kinda struggle with the audio meter part, is there a way to add it? because for me it seems to not show up. timestamp 2:31
my equalizer only shows 90HZ 160HZ 480HZ 1.5KHZ 4.5KHZ 7.8KHZ
how to fix it to be start from 30Hz ?
Oh do you have a Mini?
Minis only have 6 Band EQ's .
You can click on the numbers and type them manually..
.
If i had a Mini id probably do something like this...
30hz -2
125hz +3
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +3
12Khz +6
but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
I think i replied to someone else here for the "mini" settings I'd use for the SM7b
So for the RE20 I'd probably go for something like this;
(RE20 switch Flat)
65hz +2 ( sub bass)
125hz +4 (Bass)
0.5hz 0 (Mids)
1Khz 0
4Khz +2 (Treble)
8Khz +4
This is kinda guess work as i don't have an RE20 to test
but i know it has less bass and more Treble than the SM7b as well as a built in "mid" cut so.
these settings should be a decent baseline that you can hopefully tweak to fit YOUR voice.
obviously audio is kinda subkective.. and what i like might be different towhat YOU like...
BUT
The best way to see what Frequencies do, is to put ALL the EQ to 0 and then listen as you Raise each band individually,
so you can hear what its doing to your voice... Then you can kinda figure out whether to add or take away those sounds from YOUR voice. ( by how much specifically might be a bit of trial n error)
I'm not sure how to set up my Shure SM7db with the mini go xlr. My mic sounds so low, what am i supposed to do??
Low as in volume??
The GoXLR Mini has the same preamps as the full size GoXLR..
So all the settings etc should be the same as this video...
The only real difference is less EQ bands and you lose a De-Esser 🤔
Do I need a Fethead with the Go XLR + Shure SM7B combo? Thank you
Nah...
They can help a BIT but the GoXLR has like 70db of Gain available and the SM7B only needs aboit 50-55db to be loud enough, so for online distribution you don't really need one..
If you're doing HIGH end audio stuff..
Voice actor
Musician
Audio only podcast etc
then maybe its worth it but for live streams or YT vids it's not
Why do you get more labels in the equalizer? I only have 6 and in the video you have 8. Is it different if you're using the GoXLR Mini?
OMG I completely forgot that the mini gets less bands...
Yeah unfortunately you only get 6 instead, compared to the Full size one...
in that case, i'd go for something like
30hz -2
125hz +3
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +3
12Khz +6
but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice will be different to mine.

No not at all!!
The GoXLR is basically an interface & a mixer all rolled into one..
So all you need is the GOXLR & SM7B technically ( the preamps are good enough to power it)

What kind of headphones do you use to pair with it?
I have a few different ones..
For gaming I use steel series arctis Pro wireless
But if I want a bit higher quality for video editing etc.
I use Sennheiser 598s or my Rode NTH100s
@@ajsarsfield thank you so much! I appreciate your detailed video!
Thank YOU for watching 🥰💕
How can I use this on a goxlr mini, I'm a little confused because there is more stuff for eq
Oh!
Minis only have 6 Band EQ's instead..
(Probably should have covered this in the video 🙃)
If i had a Mini id probably do something like this...
30hz -2
125hz +3
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +2
12Khz +5
but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
Thank you so much :)@@ajsarsfield
hello, what filters and settings you use obs for voice ? thanks
Tbh I basically use the same filter setup as this but in OBS instead...🔥
I do have another video
Walking through how I set them all up in OBS if that helps?
ruclips.net/video/jGsbi34um70/видео.htmlsi=_xLY6uao9XXhY4K3
is there a way to get rid of that noise it makes when the gate opens its like a little vibrating buzz noise the mic makes in my ears
You could try putting the noise gate attenuation at about 75% instead..
🤔
That way it's not going from completely silent to suddenly on
instead it's just going from very quiet to louder
i got it at 75% 😓@@ajsarsfield
with the gate to high me and others can hear buzzing in the mic. And when its to low people can hear me cutting in and out. Any help?
My settings sounds "old", tried this, love it but i can hear my keyboard in the recordings while streaming, guess i need a quieter keyboard
I dont have that audio mixer on mine, how did you get it?
Sorry
I really should have explained that better...🙃
I popped it out of OBS and just had it on top of the goxlr software so I could see/ show the levels
would these be the same settings if you use a cloudlifter and have it on condenser?
Pretty much...
except the initial gain would need to be dropped to 30/35db instead as the cloudlifter boosts the mic signal...
Hi, how did you get that audio mixer thing to show? I cant seem to find it on the goxlr hub.
The full EQ?
If you can't see all the bands and you only see 3 there should be an arrow on the right hand side... press it and it'll open up the rest of the filters etc...
If you only have the go xlr mini.. that only has 6 bands vs 10 on the full size ...
So in that case, i'd go for something like
30hz -2
125hz +3
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +3
12Khz +6
but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice will be different to mine.
@@ajsarsfield yeah, this is what I meant, thanks a lot :)
do i need a cloudlifter if im getting the Go XLR Mini
(just the github Linux stuff)
However thankfully our GoXLR's will still work for a while as they are..
as long as Windows or some other company doesn't randomly update software that stops it...
I've been advising people to eventually get a Streamdeck+ when they can
'Cause that comes with elgatos wavelink software..
And that means you can use the GoXLR as JUST a XLR microphone interface..
but control all your audio with elgatos software (which is arguably better anyway)
Obviously it's an extra expense but it's something to look into when you can afford it..
(That's what I'll be doing)
I spoke to Elgatos GM and their support team and they confirmed all of this should work together.
I'm on their page now
Same! I have the 15 Key one..
and now I'll have to switch to the + at some point 🙃
.
@@ajsarsfield thx will do!!!
Hi! Have a question, I have the Mino GO X LR so when I get to the equalizer part I see I dont have those options, I just have 6, what can I do? Thanks!
I completely forgot the mini only had 6 bands when making this...
If i had a Mini id probably do something like this...
30hz -2
125hz +3
0.5hz -2
2Khz 0
4Khz +3
12Khz +6
but obviously if you don't like how it sounds play around a little bit as your voice and Room will be different to mine
if i need 18 make up gain to reach that 12db mark is that bad? or the same
Its not necessarily "bad" but I'd probably say your input gain is too low
(Or compressor is too strong)
if you have to add that much extra gain to get it to a good level!
For my SM7B my input is usually around 50-55db (without a cloudlifter)
And then make up gain is usually around 7 or 8 once I've added a compressor etc 🤔
Do you keep your mic tab at 100%?
On the mixer??
Yup always full..
I add a limiter in OBS though (or loudmax)
Made a video on that plugin too
but a limiter etc helps avoid any peaking usually set mine around -5db
And then I obviously balance background music /game audio below that
What is that audio mixer software?
Looks like obs
Correct!! I just popped it out and overlayed it on top of the goxlr software so I could see how the effects changed the volume etc
How do I get that Audio Mixer you use? :)
I really should have explained that better haha 😅
I popped it out of OBS and just had it on top of the GOXLR software so I could see the levels as I made changes! 💕
@@ajsarsfield I looked around - where in obs is that located?
how can i open up that audio mixer
The meters?
Theyre just the standard audio meters from OBS studio
I just popped them out of the program and had them on top of the GoXLR software
Any audio/recording software should have meters like that though
thank you for making this video and explaining things so people can understand it a bit better. My mic sounds A LOT cleaner and more crispy but with the bassy punch it needs to have!!!!!! 🙏🤌
please i have your screen setting? thank you :D
What is that little audio meter from?
Oh it's from OBS.. 🙃(should have pointed that out better)
I figured most people would use this setup for streaming..
So I popped out the OBS Audio meters to demonstrate the volume
getting that noise when you talk, is that normal? because its been getting on my nerves 😂
To be fair it's probably my PC fans in the background..
I'm in a TINY room 7ft by 8ft so my pc noise is always picked up by my mics 🙃
I need to either get quieter fans or somehow move the PC away from my desk 🤔
@@ajsarsfield ok ty! (sorry for late response)
Thanks
