Btw they freeze better if you have the top closed, thats why they never were frozen extremely well. Also the Sugars and Salts in the drinks dont like getting frozen easily either.

The way the ramen ice cubes came out, Im thinking there's a filter in the machine. When you poured the mix in, you could see all the spice and green leafy material. In the ice, it was barely there at all.
Driving me nuts that he didn’t clean it between batches or close the lid so it never actually got super cold to properly freeze. Should also have done same liquids in ice cube tray in normal freezer.

Whenever you have water that is a solution of something like salt or sugar, the boiling temperature increases and the freezing temperature decreases. Mtn Dew and pickle juice didn't freeze well because the small compressor couldn't get cold enough. Less water in the Ramen flavoring would have had the same problem because of salt content. Only Tyler would use power tools as an immersion blender.
The fact that he didn’t wash that machine out after each different batch gives me anxiety.

Came to comment this, He's overthinking with the automatic ice maker. plain old ice trays would work better. no pump, so consistency doesn't matter. you're not limited to an automatic timer calibrated for water, put whatever you want in the trays let it chill for 24 hrs and then check them.

Hello! I want to mentioned why the mountain dew didn't freeze! Mountain dew freezes at a much lower temperature then water, that's why it didn't freeze, the machine wasn't cold enough
And maybe close the lid to keep in the cold 🤷🏻♂️
If water freezes at 32° F but at a lower temperature when salt is added, I think that could be why the hot sauce, pickle juice and mountain dew didn't harden like water would by itself. Maybe?
@@chrisplummer8588 The biggest issue is the hot sauce and pickle juice is the salt and vineager. Vineager as alcohol doesn't really freeze.
@@Lunchmeat_Larry Like a chest freezer, the lid being open isn't that big of a deal. Cold air is more dense, thus is heavier. I thought the same at first until I remembered that fact.
Sugar is a natural antifreeze, and Mountain Dew is loaded with sugar. The salinity (salt content) and acidity of water also affects the freezing temperatures. The hot sauce had a higher acidity due to the vinegar, and the pickle juice had a high salt content. This ice machine's operating temp was likely much closer to 0°F (about -18°C) because although water begins freezing at 32°F (0°C) you'd want those freezing plates colder to freeze the water faster and prevent the outer layers of ice from melting.
The makings of a great Tyler video is when it starts out with “hey guys, so I bought an ice maker”

Whenever I make a roast chicken I collect the juices and add to ice cube trays then freeze. They come in super handy when making stews/broths ect and I may even add a couple when I next make Ramen x
I was thinking this. But more of a broke college kid form. Make a tray of ramen packet flavor cubes and just drop them in as you need.

The issue with the Mt dew once was that as the metal got cold it acted like when you put ice in soda. The carbonation comes out and fizes. The fizzing actually knocks any ice crystals apart. You can make mt dew ice cubes in a normal freezer
Also the corn syrup has a lower melting/freezing point than water, so really only the water froze onto the metal, and the corn syrup didn't freeze with it

Dew in and i picked them up the next day more than once and trust my they were defiantly frozen solid iv frozen cans of mtn. Dew in my frezzer at home and they have frozen also idk what the temp. Is but its no where near that things freeze so much harder in the freezer at work then home you wouldn't know it untill you have some ice cream or a popsicle or somthing directly from each one... it freezes twice as solid from -15

From what I’ve heard, certain ice cream places literally freeze pickle juice into popsicle molds to make “pickle pops”. I’ve made my own before and it makes this weird combination where the concentrated part of the juice is at the bottom and top is just mostly ice. So pickle ice cubes aren’t too out of the ordinary, to me.
I was assuming everything would just taste like a combination of nasty stuff by the end lol

Freezing stock is actually a decent idea but I recommend just using normal icecube trays for that.

4:20 there is a hall effect sensor on the lid so the compressor won't engage without the lid being shut a large portion of the time. The device does not refrigerate itself. Its refrigeration is created by the ice it creates so it will continue to melt until the reservoir water and area inside the maker is chilled.

ok, so here's the thing - artificial sweeteners will prevent drinks from freezing. That's why Mountain Dew wouldn't make ice cubes. The higher sugar content the better a drink freezes.

Salt changes the freezing temperature of water, it lowers it, so brine from pickle juice, etc won't freeze the same as regular water.

The reason the pickle juice & hot sauce didn't work was because of the salt content. Salt lowers the freezing point of water.
@Jamestown Protestant In my own experience. the carbonation seems to raise the freezing point a bit. I can put a can of pop outside in the snow overnite, and it is liquid until I pop the top, then it turns to a slushy drink, like 7-11 has. Possibly from the CO2 pressure in the can?. But I am not chemist. I am sure there is someone out there that has vastly more knowledge on the subject. I do know there is a specific temperature range this occurs at, before the water in the pop freezes and the syrup is on top of the ice.
If you use the old-school ice cube trays and stick them in the freezer you can make any type of ice cube you want out of any drink doesn’t matter if it’s carbonated or not. 99% of all sodas though are going to make a slushy cube instead of a actual ice cube

Protip the sugar in sodas is what causes them to have lower freezing temps, so you should probably prep it by putting stuff in the fridge before trying to make ice out of it.
