    I used to do that when I was young. I would turn the garment inside out as it made it easier to make a pattern from it more perfectly.

      You can get wrapping paper at the dollar store too. Of course if you spend time drafting a pattern it's probably better to use the thicker stuff to make it last. I like the wrap that has grid lines on the back side.

    I have been sewing off and on for years and recently I’ve really started sewing more and more. I just love watching all your tutorials, I have learned soooo much from you in regards to making my own patterns (and using them over and over again). You have really turned sewing into something very fun for me; instead of pushing myself to finish something, each night I can’t wait to get behind my sewing!! Thank you so much❣️

    Love it!
    18 hours later...
    🤣Oops! Love it so much I did it last night. I think it’s worth mentioning the crotch should fall at the same distance from the waist/hem on both pieces. I know you marked the crotch on pattern (so I did too) but the matching on both pieces went over my head. After cutting out my test pieces the crotch pinned together perfectly but the back waistband was three inches higher than the front and the leg was three inches shorter 🤦‍♀️ I basted anyway and the fit is great so I’ll just adjust the height and length to match. I haven’t sewn clothes since the early nineties so I was quite tickled it fit while laughing at my absurd muslin. Ty again!

    Thank you. I've seen all sorts of tutorials on drafting pants patterns & this is one of the best. I like how you explain why we do things a certain way and how to add the waistband to the top. I think my main problem is that I don't have any pants that fit me well. LOL. It's one of the reasons I want to make my own pants. But, I suppose I can put some on inside-out and pin them or something. I actually wear men's pants because they have deeper pockets than women's pants and they tend to fit more comfortably (men's pants are less likely to be super tight).
    Do you have a video where you sew these pants?

    In your pattern drafting you curved up your back piece at the waist. Could I curve down the front piece at the waist instead? Would that achieve the same effect? I’m thinking about doing that just cause when I stretch the waist elastic and look at the pants from the front it seems that the back waistline is horizontal but the front curves down towards the center if you know what I mean. So I’m wondering if I should curve the back up or the front down instead. Thank you!

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  Год назад +1

      Hello there and I am so happy you are enjoying my videos. About your question - think about it this way- the pattern that we made only makes one leg, so only half of the waist measurement. You will be cutting two of each pattern pieces mirrored, so that way you have a left and right leg, therefore to cut a full length waistband you will sum up one front and one back and multiply by 2.

      Yes, especially if it is a fiber that will shrink, like linen and cotton based fabrics. Otherwise you will sew a garment, wash it and it will be 2 sizes smaller. Follow washing directions found on the bolt of the fabric when you buy it.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  3 года назад

      These pants are non-stretch. And it does not matter what kind of pants I use - take pants from your wardrobe that you would like to replicate, follow the steps that I mention- note what material they are made of, what features they have, copy them using this tutorial and you will have a pattern that you can use for your non-stretch material.

    Thanks for the video. I will give it a try. The pants I'm copying have some stretch. My test fabric is not stretch. Should I add extra seam allowances to give them more ease? I really like you drafting videos.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  4 года назад +2

      Diane, you should ABSOLUTELY add extra ease to your pattern if what you are tracing is stretch and what you are sewing is not. Let's think about it - stretch fabric stretches and therefore requires less ease(and sometimes even negative ease), meaning, that garment from a stretch fabric can mimic your actual measurements, because it stretches. If you are cloning your stretch pants but using non stretch fabric - chances are - you won't be able to put them on. Hope this helps!

    • @dianep649
      @dianep649 4 года назад +1

      @@ThoughtfulCreativity Thank you for the quick reply. The stretch pants are a bit big, but I was planning to add some ease. I just found an ease allowance chart posted in the FB group so I will use that as a guide. I really enjoy your drafting videos and have used several of them .

  • @AngelaFrancis20
    @AngelaFrancis20 2 года назад

    Why is there no seam allowance added? Sorry, I’m new to sewing pants so I’m just really curious why there isn’t a seam allowance. Or do you add that once placing the pattern on the fabric?

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  2 года назад

      You need to add seam allowances one way or another, as that is what makes the seam... I don't add mine on the pattern as I add it when I cut my fabric, just a personal preference, I explain in multiple videos why and how I go about it. Different people do it differently. But you do need seam allowance no matter which way you add it, otherwise your garment will be too small. Edited to say - in the video that follows after it you can see that I am cutting this pattern with seam allowance added.

    I have a pair of pants I don't wear anymore because the print on it is dated. So I took it apart to use as my pattern. My problem is which side do I lay down the pieces on the new fabric? 🤔 Do you have a tutorial for this. I'm planning on using a solid color.

    Very useful!!! But the music is just too much! You are lively enough and entertaining! You do not need these percussion in the background.

    What I always have trouble with is what farbic can you use to make pants.

      Almost any, really. The real question is for the pattern/drafting and shape. You can make flowy palazzo pants from light silk but the pattern would look greatly different from formal wear pants. I most frequently use twill, denim, medium weight jerseys, suiting.

    The pants I’m tracing have an elastic, & the pants I’m making will have an elastic. Do I need to pull the top of the pants like you did? Or can I trade it with the elastic without pulling it. Please answer
