    THANK YOU!!! I've never seen this drafting business. For forty years, I've hacked away at a Kenmore machine that belonged to my mother, and I had no idea that there is a way to do this that is simple, elegant, and logical. What's more amazing is that I will be able to do it using stuff I already have: tissue paper from CVS, a bedsheet retrieved from my donate pile, a tape measure, and a good pair of scissors. I had to look up 'balancing' a pattern--also brilliant! It explains why I looked like such a ragamuffin in the 80s, and not so much like Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. My plans now include making a SHARP pair of britches! Brava!

    CROTCH EXTENSION CLARIFICATION:
    The front extension is 1/16 of your entire hip girth. So if your hip is 40, divide 40 by 16 and that is how much your have to add for the front crotch extension.
    The back extension is 1/8 of your entire hip girth so, again, if your full hip girth is 40, divide 40 by 8 and that is your back crotch extension.
    It is correct in the video if you ignore the additional note I put on the screen in orange letters.
    Just remember that we are working with one side of the front hip and one side of the back hip, and for the front extension you would find a 1/4 of the front width of your draft and add that as the extension. For the back you would find 1/2 of the front width of your draft and add that as the back extension. Its the same thing as above just may be more confusing to some.

    This process requires an enormous amount of patience and dedication. Thank you for sharing your journey towards “Fit-Ness”. It was much more complex compared to other tutorials I’ve watched because it included your evaluation of the fit on camera and the discussion of your findings. This aspect is extremely helpful to viewers because it explains each area that does not fit properly and the reasons why the fit is “off”. I found this very helpful. Without this portion of the video, we are left with a pattern block that theoretically looks great on paper but fails once executed evidenced by analyzing where the fit falls short. In other videos viewers assume that after the block is complete on paper, the fit must be perfect. I think showing the pants sewn and modelled is just as important as taking measurements and translating them into a block. This video was technically well done. The verbal description of the entire process was equally well done. I will definitely attempt to make a pants pattern block using this video as my guide. Thanks again for a very thorough tutorial which was informative as well as enjoyable. Bravo!

    Ive seen so many pant tutoriaks and I keep coming back to this video coz it covers everything. very very perfect and professional. I've a question.. If someone don't wear their pants on waist, and prefer a little bit lower, do I still have to draft it from waist?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  Год назад

      I think you could draft from lower but it's easier I think, to draft from the waist then just measure down on each line however much you want to lower the waist. That's what I do ☺️

      The front and the back have a straight line going down the middle of the leg and you have distances from there.
      The crotch is like a circle but the "middle part" is brought toward the front. So that "dip" you see, it connects into a half circle and goes under the crotch.
      Then you need darts, usually mid way in front and back to gather fabric to accommodate the shape from the wide hips to the waist.
      It's harder to explain than understand. It's really simple.

    Thanks for the very detailed tutorial. I appreciated that you showed how to measure the body and the adjustments you made. I look forward to your final adjustment video.
    I tried your instructions. It was mostly clear, except for two areas, that I wasn't sure about.
    1) at the point where you extended the crotch line: I misunderstood 1/2 back & 1/4 front hip measurement, thinking it was the entire front/back measurement. I eventually realized it was 1/2 the back block & quarter the front block.
    2.) the grain line: the instructions AB & BC divided by 1/4" didn't look correct, to me. I didn't know what to do, so I went based on your demonstration; which seemed more like 1/2 AB/BC.
    Sorry for the long message. Let me know if I am wrong. Thanks much

      @LydiaNaomi  2 года назад +2

      You may have got my extension confused. I need to correct that in the video.

    Hey this is probably super late but one fit issue I struggle with in shorts is that they ride up. Or, my thighs eat them. I haven’t really found an off the rack option for shorts that are comfortable for me so looking to make my own. I think this could be a crotch length issue.. but would love to hear your opinion. If it fits into any of your future videos would love to see! Thanks!

    I have tried to make a good pants pattern before, but now that I sew better I really want a good pattern for me with the darts. I want to make wool lined trousers, pajamas, wide leg beach pants and shorts. I never get the back butt right and crotch. I also still have trouble with shape of sleeve cap.
    I love sewing!!! Getting better.

    Thanks so much for this video! What does it mean when you say 'Divide the hip girth by 2 inches' to get the width of your rectangle? I'm doing mine in cm, so am I just dividing my total hip girth by 2, then adding in the cm equivalent of a half inch ease?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, exactly, I meant to say two not 2 inches 😊

    wonderful video, I am currently in the process of making pantalons that can accommodate suspenders. the modern clothing retailers within my reach skip the bit between the waist and the hips (I think because its cheaper and men don't know how comfortable suspenders are). I think I need to alter a few things to this method (I need excess width for suspenders) but this video taught me many things. should result in a cleaner silhouette than altering an oversized pair by lowering the crotch(gaining height of the band/length of the rise).
    any recommendations on things that I should do different than the method in this video as I am making this for trousers worn by man?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  3 года назад +2

      so if I am understanding correctly you want a higher waist pant for suspenders? I think maybe mens trousers have less of a deep dart on the waist, it just all depends on your measurements. If you follow this according to your measurements you should be ok :)

    Great tutorial! But I got a bit confused when you started to talk about the crotch extensions and the waist measurements. My hip is 35, so when you say 1/2 of back hip is my crotch extension. Do you mean 1/2 of whats on paper (CB)or half as in 35/2? And my waist is 25, so is my back waist 25/2 or 25/4. I am so lost please help!!!!

    Thank you for this! I struggle with the front part of the crotch line. I get little diagonal lines upwards towards my hip. I guess it is too much fabric at some point and not enough at another? Or maybe I need to adjust the way the curve goes?

    I am so confused on the darts. If I follow what (I think) your instruction say, my second mark is past the midway point. Could my dart intake be different maybe? These are my measurements
    1. Waist circumference 39.5
    2. Upper hip 46.5
    3. Hip circumference 48.5

    hey Lydia! back with another question- do you think that this pattern would work well to make a plus size pant block? it’s worked perfectly for me after the tweaks i’ve made since the last comment, so i would love to use this for her if it could work. best!

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  2 года назад

      I think it will, you just may want to add a bit more ease to begin with - you can always take away ease after testing it on the person. Have fun!

  • @iiizz.y
    @iiizz.y Год назад

    when you say half of crotch depth or 1/8 of hip girth - does that include the added ease? also, initially it says to add 1/2" of ease to crotch depth, but in the next shot it says 3/4" of ease. which one? thank you, great video.

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  Год назад +1

      Yes to the first and I did 1/2" ease but you can choose whatever you prefer, you can always move it up or down after your first ample ☺️
      Also see the description or pinned comment if you have confusion about the crotch addition 💗

      with elastic waist, the waist area needs to be at least as wide as your hips so you can get it over them :)
