ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO (WiFi) : one motherboard too many!

  • The Crosshair Hero is usually the most featured and premium AMD motherboard ASUS will release. But the CROSSHAIR VIII HERO (WiFi) has the mighty X570 chipset to handle, and with it cascades an unprecedented number of features, including 16 USB plugs totalizing an whooping 116 Gbps!
    Interestingly, its greatest rival is not coming from another brand, but from right beneath its own feet: The ROG Strix X570-E.
    CORRECTION : Minute 6:00, there are 2 M.2 SSDs, not 1!
    Enjoy 😊

      Oh dear, I do . Been playing around the board for a week or so and it will be featured in my "Ryzen upgrade 3.0" video series (editing as we speak).
      Problem is, sometimes, when I travel ( which is my case right now, summer holidays with the kids), I film the dialogues and have to do the graphics a bit later, either on a plane or in the hotel. In that case I use high-def 2D pictures to illustrate.
      But when I am back home, then, yeah you can see me playing with the board itself, which I grant you, is much funnier :), and that's what my reviews usually are like :)
      Hope this clarifies .. and thanks for watching Safetytrousers , I appreciate it !

    Hi Laurent quick question, in your opinion is it better to build an intel or amd based PC for gaming? I was dead set to build a i9-9900k last week before I learnt that gen 10 has come. However seeing that the motherboard has changed and the processor is still newly released with no stock everywhere, I am starting to look at Ryzen 3900x. Based on review on gaming performance, it performs almost on par with 9900k and even 10900k. Also seeing that the technology is more advance (more cores), I feel like I am getting my money worth. Also from reasearch, motherboard X570 will be compatible with next gen ryzen. Maybe I'm thinking this too far and over "future proofing" before the big purchase.
    Thanks for the video btw, I have watched almost all your motherboard reviews. They're very detailed and I like the presentations.

      It does only have 2. He also failed to mention the 2 USB 2.0 headers give 4 USB 2.0 Ports , and the USB 3.2 Gen 1 header gives 2 Gen 1 ports. Hence 19 USB ports, instead of the 16 he said. Probably just an oversight. The Strix x570-E also has only 2 M.2s.

    • @SrchangwaytogoC
      @SrchangwaytogoC 5 лет назад +1

      The voltage controller in the Master is a lot better than the the one in the Asus, the heatsink on the VRMs is also better. Sound on the Master is also better on paper. Many of the design and features in the Hero are aimed towards LN2 Cooling and extreme overclocking, which I personally do not care about. As a rule of thumb Asus is more expensive or offer less for the same price cuz they spend a lot in marketing and RUclipsrs. The problem with Gigabyte is the design of the menus for the BIOS (which they redesigned recently), but you get used to it. I'd go Master.

    Crosshair VIII Hero has 8 layer PCB instead of 6 Layer PCB, 7+1 phase VRM instead of a 4+2, 60 Amp power stages from international rectifier instead of 50 Amp power stages from Intersil. With Crosshair VIII Hero you also get Clear CMOS, Bios Flashback, Safe boot button, ReTry button, Start Button, Reset button, LN2 mode, Slow Mode, a 3rd Chassis Fan connector, a H_AMP fan connector, W IN header, W OUT header, W FLOW header, Speaker connector and the ASUS Q-Connector. Also, the Strix series only has Optimem whereas the Crosshair VIII Hero Has Optimem III Although I'm not really sure there is a difference there or what the difference is or if Optimem is just a marketing gimmick in and of itself. I'd be curious to see some testing of that.
    Oh yeah and to top all that off above before I forget most important of all with the Strix:
    Note *1 PCIeX16_3 slot shares bandwidth with PCIeX1_2.
    *2 Due to limitations in HDA bandwidth, 32-Bit/192kHz is not supported for 8-Channel audio.
    The limitations above are not present on the Crosshair VIII Hero so yeah for only $33 more the HERO is clearly far superior and the Strix-E is pointless when the TUF gaming Plus is only $200 and does most of what it does.

    I don't quite agree with the conclusion. I think the difference in I/O and Diagnostic QLED makes up for the difference in price. Being a musician with lots of devices I usually have every USB port populated in my systems typically so the extra ports add functionality I'll actually use in lieu of display ports that I'll never touch. So I would say this is a great entry point for enthusiasts and the strix is the highest point for the general gamer who just needs keyboard, mouse and capture card.

      Personally, after looking at a LOT of reviews for the Hero and the Master, I decided to spend the money on the Master, better voltage control and sound. It also stayed 10-15 C lower on the board through all levels of OC. ... I like Giabyte Bios over Asus Bios(I say NO to the Armory Crate Bios auto loading rootkit) and I think the Master just looks better.
      ... Not the best reasons, but mine.

    I bought the Strix E because the Hero which has barely any difference at all is $130 more where I live

    • @fuzzytech3846
      @fuzzytech3846 3 года назад

      That's crazy, it's only a $25 difference here but another thing that is different that he didn't mention is the chipset cooling. The X570 chipset gets VERY hot in any motherboard and I beleave the Strix E uses Passive cooling while the Hero uses Active cooling. Heat will cause the chip to throttle down which will cause everything else connected to slow down and also greatly reduce the life of the chipset as a lot of people have complained about.

    Another detailed and comprehensive review. Keep up the great work! That said, I stopped using Asus because their software is atrocious and security was pathetic (i.e. live update service was susceptible to hacks). I now use an MSI board and would never go back. Gigabyte is another good company and am looking at the x570 Xtreme, but am holding off until more reviews come in.

    YOU COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG THAN YOU ARE ABOUT THIS CONCLUSION!!!!!!!! LOL. IT'S THE FORMULA THAT IS THE ODD BOARD OUT, NOT THE HERO!!!!!! NAME ONE NEEDED OR USEFUL THING THAT THE FORMULA HAS THE THE HERO DOESN'T HAVE???????????? THE EK BLOCK IS SOOOOOO NOT NEEDED ON THE VRM'S!!!!! SO WHAT DOES THE FORMULA HAVE? The answer is NOTHING!!! The formula is the WASTE of MONEY, NOT the Hero!!!! The hero has better VRM's than the STRIX, and better performance on every benchmark I've seen to date. The Formula is the odd board out, that was definitely NOT needed... And YES this mobo DOES have TWO m.2 slots, not just one.
