Just bought this with the 5900x CPU and a 980 Pro M.2. Yes, I know it's overkill for my needs. But when I build, I always look to build a system that I won't be regretting in a couple years. Like the last build I did, I intend on getting at least 5 years from this before the tech starts getting old and outdated.
I'm looking to do exactly the same :) Can you confirm both M.2 are PCI-e 4? Was hoping to create a RAID 0 for extreme speeds (mostly for a faster OS boot and games).
Also paired mine with a Dark Hero X570, 32x2gb 3600mhz, 1tb 980 pro, Kingston 2TB 2280, 1080ti system is mainly used as a workstation for retouching & sim racing. Will upgrade my 1080ti eventually but it still does a fine job I must say. Love this new build! 5900x eats up file compression for breakfast.

You can also try new egg business which has a separate account creation system. That dark hero shortages shouldn’t be as prevalent any longer.

@@qcremi4357 Mine? I gave myself around a $5,000 USD budget. I had most of it saved up by the time the RTX 3000 and Zen 3 series came out. Dominator RAM and the 1TB and 2TB nvme drives came after. I already had the PC-O11 Dynamic XL pretty much bought when it came out. I'm reusing the fans from my previous build as well as radiators. The CPU block is new but I had that since the fall but knew I'd be using it for this build. Having said that, I did add some things. Decided to get the Torque fittings over the classic from EKWB and I added a Distro plate over the Corsair XD5 and decided to water cool the GPU as the 3090 Strix gets stupid hot. I'd say this added another 1000-1500 easy. I did sell about $1300.00 worth of parts from my old build, so that puts me back to the 5k budget . . . maybe. Add all accessories and crap I had to buy after the fact and price still is pretty steep. Check out my PC build videos to get a bigger picture of the parts used. I have 2 up so far. I'll be doing a full run-down of the cost of this computer in a later video--it's very contrary to my more budget oriented approach to the builds I've been making for the channel. Then again, I needed a PC to handle editing and video creation in addition to gaming.
Best motherboard review I have ever seen. Please keep up the good work. Very informational, answered questions I had regarding this board, I now own a dark hero thanks to you.

Thanks for the watch and comment! Quick question for you, does your computer ever randomly shut off when the GPU is really being hit in a game? Mine will unless I undervolt the GPU. I have the Strix OC 3090. It's watercooled. I have a 1000W 80+ Titanium seasonic PSU. I wonder if maybe even that's not enough wattage for the 3090 and 5950x . . .
@@MiddleofKnowhere I have had *ZERO* shut off issues with this machine.....My card never needs undervolting. I bet your Seasonic (great PSU, btw) is just a bit underpowered for the system. Try a 1300W if you have one.
NICE! Have fun with it. I definitely like it. not many issues yet other than icue/asus armoury not always working nice together. no memory errors with 64gb kit (4 sticks) and bios was easy peasy to update and set up for xmp. I do think i'll get black electrical tape to cover the colored wires for the usb 2.0 and hd audio cables. :) The onboard lighting is super subtle and nice too. In icue I can set up a blackout profile to make them all turn off which is nice should i leave it on over night as the ram still stays lit when you put the machine to sleep and i haven't figured out how turn it off.
I just ordered this motherboard and a Ryzen 5950X CPU, along with other components for an entirely new computer. I'm 65 years old, hopefully it is a smooth build. haha. Thanks for the informative video!

I still like watching reviews on the board. I bought my Dark Hero in December 2021 and paired it with a AMD 5900X. I still really need to upgrade my GPU. Still using a MSI 4GB GTX 770 OC. Might have a chance to buy a used PNY 3070 from a friend next week for $200-250 USD, hopefully! For my PSU. I got a really good deal on a Seasonic Prime 850W. I'm really happy with my new PC. I upgraded from a Sabertooth Z77 with a i5 3570K. Was quite the upgrade for me!
@@MiddleofKnowhere Very ! After almost 6 years with my trustful 6700K and a 1080Ti, it's time to build a new config so I'm going for a 5950X with a 3090. After checking on internet forums/YT etc. for a week, I've decided to go with the Dark Hero although I've been quite reluctant with any setup concerning AMD 5000 Series due to the many people complaining about RAM instability issues. Then I came to a conclusion that most threads about the issues are from 6+ months ago AND, with heavy overclockers. I'm going for 64Gb RAM, 4x 16Gb G. Skill Trident Z Neo 3600 (16-19-19-39) or (16-16-16-36). I'm not planning to go over 3600 by any means so I hope I don't have any problem ! Wish me luck and once again, thanks for the Dark Hero excelent video !
That will be perfect. I went for 64gb of Corsair dom plat 3600 cl16. I’ve had 0 issues. Also have a Strix 3090. In two weeks I’ll be finishing the full loop.

Nice! My 4770K resided in an ASUS Prime Deluxe Dual motherboard. It was gold-ish with tan/brown accents on the PCI. Not a clean white that's for sure. lol I had the Crosshair VII Hero for my 2700X. I'm loving the Dark hero. IT's definitely stealth. The matte paint on the heatsink mars a little or just looks that way b/c of the finger particles or dust it can attract.
Hi i realy like your review of this board! Maybe i did not listen carefully but i think you did not say a word about the Dynamic OC switcher witch is a feature of this board. The Dos Oc Switcher and the passive chipset cooer where the main reasons i bought this board the Dos OC switcher makes this board unique on the market and that partially explains the high price.. But you are right its still too expensive! Best regards!
Hi! I didn't mention anything about the DOS OC Switcher, you're correct. Funny thing is, I don't think that's even mentioned in the manual or on the product site. I myself just learned about it watching an overclock video. It's a neat tool that's for sure! Personally, I don't really want to overclock since this is my workhorse computer, but I do want to use the PBO2 curve optimizer to undervolt to see if I can't lower temperatures/power consumption while still achieving higher frequencies or the same as I'm currently getting. I watched an Optimum Tech video about it, and while he uses an MSI board, I think I can figure things out. I'll probably make a video on my attempts at doing it. :)
That’s one big reason I bought it too! I use the setting on my Crosshair Viii Extreme and now on my new x570s Dark Hero viii build. Doesn’t seem like a big deal but running a 5950x for 3d rendering, modeling (solidworks), S3D for my 3d printing and vid production (OBS with 4K cam recording while streaming vids, & Adobe editing) for my TikTok, helping switch on the fly from my manual OC to PBO depending on workload comes in handy - Helps me gain about 11% performance on avg, so that’s a nice chunk off an OCd water cooled 5950x
I'll up that grey box so it's less transparent over the map as I think that's what you're referring to, the BG behind the mobo in most of the shots. :) Thank you for the suggestion.
Changing from my AMD TR 3960x build to a 5950x build as i cant be bothered to wait longer for 5th gen threadripper. So glad i just ordered this board! Really wanted ASUS again as im currently using a ASUS trx40 e gaming mobo. Brilliant board. But as im not really utilising threadripper i thought the 5950x will be more than good enough for my gaming and the occasional bit of CAD work. Sad to let go of this board although the dark hero does also look excellent. However the new system is going to have an EK custom loop for the Cpu so i am excited for that! it will be the first ever custom loop and my third ever pc build. also just ordered a MSI 3090 Suprim X and i figured this board would help get the most out of it. Thanks for the fantastic review going over all of the features. Very helpful.
Thanks! Enjoy building your loop! I'm going to finish mine in a few weeks I hope. Lots of things got in the way but I hope to correct that soon. Got me a custom EK loop too. Right now I have a temp looop just for the CPU. I'll be doing a sandwich with the ASUS RTX Strix OC 3090 with the standard GPU block and active backplate. Also got the Front distroplate for the Dynamic XL, so I'm pretty stoked!
@@MiddleofKnowhere Sounds Awesome! Love to see it when its done. And for my first time dealing with a custom loop im not quite brave enough to be taking apart a brand new 3090. Did want to water cool my ram too but ive decided that if the Temps get a but toasty with 4 all next to each other then i will. Because right now theres just 2 on each side of the cpu with gaps in between because its an E-ATX board. And they get pretty hot as it is now. But still perfectly safe temps so im sure ill be ok.
I scored one off of Facebook marketplace today for $200. Still sealed. I've been wanting a sport for a while. This just came out of nowhere it's going to be going into a cooler Master cosmos c700m,
I absolutely agree, because not only does he say what the features are called, but generally explains exactly what they are/what they're for. This is rarely the case with some other reviewers as they assume everyone already knows
Incredible breakdown! I'm always looking for in depth overviews like this when looking at parts, I'm grateful I ran across your channel, keep up the good work :)!
Hope it comes soon! I started my build today. Got the CPU, RAM, and NVMe drives installed. Did a test too with the GPU installed and everything is working. Got the CPU block in, put the mobo into the case and installed an SSD. Now I just have to worry about backing up data from my current machine, draining the loop, and cleaning the radiators and fans before I can install them. Then of course do some tube runs. :) Hopefully I can get it done tomorrow. Cleaning is gonna be a beast!
@@jeanelderbordes Right now I have a 5800x, but I want a 5900x. Impossible to get a 5900x or 5950x. I still need a GPU too! Building is hard right now.
Holy shit. Buddy you nailed this review/unboxing. Perfectly. Very detailed and thorough AND you also threw in recommendations such as the gen 3.2 gen 1 adapter in your description. This fucking kicked ass. Usually I just listen on the background but you nailed it so good that I stopped what I was doing and watched the whole thing. AND I turned on notifications. Gj!!
Great review. Thanks. I have this mobo till January 21. CPU (5900x) and gpu(2080) are water cooled. Case CM.H500M has positive pressure as good as it gets with some TT and Artic P series fans. No rads inside the case. Vrm temps never drops below 50 C at idle even full speed of fans. No OC performed yet. Vrm temps have reached about max 60 degrees under full stress test over 1 hour with prime95 or kombustor(msi tool). But, when a fan directly blow air over vrms then temps are dropping even to 35 degrees at idle, 42 degrees at full load.
That’s awesome to hear. I’ll be using a dynamic xl with a rad and intakes at top and rad and intakes at bottom and then exhaust on the side. Hopefully the top fans will be sufficient on the vrms despite pulling in warm air from the radiator.
An amazing video, really good, to help you through building, to have everything in place! What I want to know though, for the NVMe SSD slots, do they both support full speeds?
Yes both NVMe slots support full x4 PCIe 4.0 speeds. I am using both (1 and 2 TB respectively. the top runs off the CPU and the bottom off the chipset. Thank you for watching!
While 3600MHz is a great spot for Rysen 3000, and 5000 CPU's, AMD has stated that 4000MHz is the Sweet Spot for the New 5000 series CPU's especially with Smart Access Memory feature when you Have a 5000 CPU with a 6000 GPU. AMD has also stated that G Skill is optimised for use with AMD CPU's. I have noticed quite a difference with the 4000MHz(G Skill Royal) with 5900x and 6900xt with the Dark Hero.
With 4000 you won't be able to maintain 1:1 infinity fabric at least from what I've seen. You might be able to with 37xx and 3800. Additionally, the price to performance of going from 3600 to 4000 isn't viable for everyone. For instance there's a $40.00 price difference in Corsair Vengeance RGB 3600 to 4000 (both CL18) on Amazon. That $40.00 spent may not be worth it for some considering you'll maybe see a 3% increase in FPS. And the price difference gets even worse the higher capacity kits you look at. SAM is also available with Nvidia now as resizable bar IIRC no or are these two differnent things? Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm always happy to learn more and be correct so I can be more informed! I'll be the first to admit, I'm no good at overclocking or futzing with infinity fabrics and such, so any resources you can share would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you I will! Where did you get this if you don't mind me asking? I have a friend looking for an x570. Sounds like you're in Denmark if you used kr?

Only took 6 hours waiting in line at the Bestbuy four towns over, starting at 3am on a Thursday >:( Got everything but the CPU I want. one more month and I can pick up a 5900X :P The 5600X will do in the mean time, and make a worthy replacement for the R5 1400 DINOSAUR in my current PC when I pass it on. will a 5600x work on an A320M motherboard.... . ... . .. lol
Thanks! Glad you got that GPU. I wanted to go to the BB near me that was doing the release too but I couldn't camp over night 60 miles away as I had to get my kid to school the next morning! That's cool you're saving up for the 5900x. Keep an eye out as prices for the Zen 3 CPUs seem to be going down which is good for everyone! Thanks for watching. :)
Hey there! Great review! After watching this a while a go I decided to buy a Dark Hero for my new PC, it's arriving in a week. I wanted to ask you about the M.2 slots and heatsinks in particular. I'm planning on getting 2 SN850s for this build but I can't find them with their propietary heatsinks in my country. Have you checked or noticed how well the included heatsink works, if they keep the m.2s sufficiently cool? I might want to get a third party heatsink just in case, I've seen people recommend the Sabrent M.2 Rocket SB-HTSS , MHQJRH or the ineo Aluminum, but I'm not sure how much room for them is there in this Motherboard. Thanks and again, fantastic video!! Cheers
Thanks for watching. Yes i use the stock heatsinks on the board. I too have two sn850s. Temps seem fine and I’ve experienced no degradation in performance.
About the request for Hybrid 4-pin request at 8:27, i have the Hero (non-dark) and in the BIOS I can chose if each header is in PWM or DC mode, even in the “AIO” labeled port. Not sure if that’s what you meant though. Good vid. Information density is just right 👌
Thank you. Every time I do a mobo video I know I’m being very heavy on the info and Maude’s voice from The Big Lebowski runs through my head, “ He’s very thorough . . .” Lol. I love finding all the information and putting it in one spot for people. Regarding the hybrid PWM gigabyte has, this is different than what you do in the bios. The hybrid set up means every pwm header can take any pwm item without being specific. For instance I could put my CPU cooler fan in a regular header without the mobo having a fit saying no cpu cooler plugged in. It’s a small thing, but I think is a neat feature and allows people new to pc building to have some margin of error. :) Thank you for watching!
@@MiddleofKnowhere ohh! That actually makes a lot of sense. I really appreciate you following up with me on that! Definitely agree on the new builder improvement it brings, Thanks you for putting up the video! Keep the quality coming! (at your will ofc)
This is a really good breakdown and insightful/informative video, thank you. Could you tell me if the Bluetooth function is meant to work with the wifi antennas plugged in? Thinking of using it for game controllers.
Great question. I don’t think you need the antennas plugged in they just help if you’re far from the router. I had mine working fine on wifi about 20 feet away.
Well one thing you failed to mention here is the fact that the BIOS is hardly talked about at all in the users manual. It mainly says don't change settings in a single page. None of the BIOS options are clarified or talked about at all. Which is a good segue into one of the most important options the BIOS has which makes this motherboard a stand out amongst the boards for higher core count CPUs if you do a fair amount of production work loads. The boards ability through BIOS to switch between PBO (single core high frequency loads (gaming)) and all core overclocked loads at not quite as high frequencies as you can get with PBO based on CPU amperage draw and OC settings in BIOS.
From my experience, no motherboard maker has had good documentation on their BIOS, in-depth how-tos and what-ares on what every option is, how to clearly overclock or optimize within it, etc. ASUS videos have mostly focused on doing such things within AI Suite 3 instead, which doesn't give the granular customization fiddling in a BIOS does. Additionally, I don't have the OC experience, and am still researching it on my own to try and figure things out, so I would not posit such information without being fully knowledgeable in the first place as I don't want to misguide anyone either.
DAMN! Right now mine is in RMA land with ASUS (should arrive tomorrow). That's a hell of a deal. let me know if you seen another one for that price, might have to ask a favor lol.
Great review of this board. I was looking at getting this and putting it in the Lian Li 011DXL Case. I see in your video you did mention something about not being able to utilize all the speed on all the USB ports on the front of the Lian-Li case around 10:55 of your video... am I hearing that correctly?
Yeah. The dynamic xl has 4 usb 3.1 gen 1 ports which require two cables to two headers on a mobo and the dark hero only has one connector. It’s not a deal breaker to me though. Just have two unused ports on the case.
I really was thinking of doing something besides ASUS this build; but my ROG from 2012 with intel 2700K is still kicking. I'm sad this was such a great review; as I may wind up going with the ROG Dark Hero. :)
Hello, I have the same mother, the problem I have is that sometimes when I turn on the PC, the GPU does not recognize me, it does not show an image but it starts Windows, since I log in remotely when I check device manager, no GPU appears, I hit restart and there it gives me an image and take the rtx 3090 msi, update bios, reinstall win. I don't know if it will be some problem with the pcie lines.
Will an Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 TI fit into the top PCI slot (its a thick card, but there seems to be enough room in the top spot to accommodate.

This is one of the best motherboard review videos I have ever watched. Well done sir.
Thank you. Much appreciated!
Thanks a lot for the complete rewiew. Hope your channel will be finding by more users
Thank you for watching. I'm glad it was helpful! Onward and upward I hope for the channel. :) New video will be out tomorrow.

Solid straight forward video, appreciate it.
Excellent review! Very in depth. I was on the fence between getting the regular Hero, Formula or the Dark Hero and this has made my decision. The Dark Hero it is to go along with the 5900x, for the build I’ll be having done soon.

This is an excellent review. I have a Dark Hero, and love it...but I agree with the M.2 slots....
My System:
Asus Dark Hero X570
Ryzen 9 5950X
32GB G.skill DD4 3600 CL-14
RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra (eVGA)
2 MP600 2TB Corsair drives
2 2TB 2.5" Crucial 2TB SSDs
1600W eVGA T2 PSU
The machine is a monster....but more than most people need, imo ...it's more than *I* need, but I wanted it...
I just got mine two days ago!! Waiting for it to be delivered!!
The onboard lighting is super subtle and nice too.
Great combo!
Stupendous review! Very in depth.
Thanks, this video is very useful to mee. I hope you have similar videos about other products. Take care.
Thanks! I do. I've a whole playlist for mobos, and I'm going to do a new video on a motherboard later this week, well write and film. Editing might take a bit, but hope to have it out soon. Thank you for watching, and I'm glad this video was helpful.
I finally got my hands on one today .. love it.
I watched this video a million times. Thank you so much
I still like watching reviews on the board.
Nice!!!

@@MiddleofKnowhere That's nice ! I hope you can post a video when it's done !

Nice review, wa able to score one for 225, paired it with a 5800x\32gb and an 6800xt, but will likely jump up to a 5950x whenever they drop to its lowest price used or new.

Very well done. Excellent in-depth review.

Bought this motherboard as an upgrade from my ASUS Prime X570-Pro. So pretty excited :)
Even though it wont have the white accents for my white pc build it would still do nicely.
Wow! Very nice review! Subscribed!
Thank you the view and for the sub! Glad you liked the video.
Good review. I'd recommend a flat colour surface to sit the board on. Just a bit distracting against that camouflage
This just came out of nowhere it's going to be going into a cooler Master cosmos c700m,
Nice find!
best review ever super underated
I absolutely agree, because not only does he say what the features are called, but generally explains exactly what they are/what they're for. This is rarely the case with some other reviewers as they assume everyone already knows
suuuuper detailed! great footage and info!

Picked this thing up for $200 on ebay. Looking forward to it.
Nice pick up!
My dark hero is still on back order from Newegg, so annoying. Hopefully it will get shipped in the next 1-2 weeks as I got it on 2/8/21.
What CPU are you going with? The Ryzen R9 5950x? If the 5950x is still there no where to find, I'll just pair this motherboard with a Ryzen 9 3950x.
@@jeanelderbordes Right now I have a 5800x, but I want a 5900x. Impossible to get a 5900x or 5950x. I still need a GPU too! Building is hard right now.
Really good video. Nice objective conclusion.

Holy shit. Buddy you nailed this review/unboxing. Perfectly. Very detailed and thorough AND you also threw in recommendations such as the gen 3.2 gen 1 adapter in your description. this is an amazing video thank you so much
Great review. Thanks. I have this mobo till January 21. CPU
(5900x) and gpu(2080) are water cooled.
I just bought this motherboard !
I paid 600 canadian including taxes
That's about right for Canadian currency no? Or did you have to pay a mark-up?
@@MiddleofKnowhere 6 dollars mark up from December 20 2020,,,, I bought it at memory express !

Thank you for watching!
dude amazing review !
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching. :)
I got this motherboard from retail on discount 144$..

Excellent! loved this review. Very sober, direct, concise, and professional :) Can't wait to get my own!!! No budget here...well, once I got the chance to pick up a 3080 ti fe at MSRP. Only took 6 hours waiting in line at the Bestbuy four towns over, starting at 3am on a Thursday >:( Got everything but the CPU I want. one more month and I can pick up a 5900X :P The 5600X will do in the mean time, and make a worthy replacement for the R5 1400 DINOSAUR in my current PC when I pass it on.
will a 5600x work on an A320M motherboard.... . ... . .. lol

I might want to get a third party heatsink just in case, I've seen people recommend the Sabrent M.2 Rocket SB-HTSS
, MHQJRH or the ineo Aluminum, but I'm not sure how much room for them is there in this Motherboard.
Thanks and again, fantastic video!! Cheers
Thanks for watching. Yes i use the stock heatsinks on the board. I too have two sn850s. Temps seem fine and I’ve experienced no degradation in performance.
@@MiddleofKnowhere Thanks for answering! I'll give the stock heatsinks a try then!
Thank you for watching!
@@MiddleofKnowhere ohh! That actually makes a lot of sense. I really appreciate you following up with me on that! Definitely agree on the new builder improvement it brings,
Thanks you for putting up the video!
Additionally, I don't have the OC experience, and am still researching it on my own to try and figure things out, so I would not posit such information without being fully knowledgeable in the first place as I don't want to misguide anyone either.
i dont get it why they dont put drivers on the usb stick ? why they put it in cd rom ? year is 2021
I agree! Small 2gb drives are so I expensive and if you buy in bulk even less so. Ty for watching!
I got a hell of deal on one today 100 at micro center I could not pass that up.

Can you show me how to overclock the RAM in the uefi bios?
Like MSI "memory try it" features?
Will an Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 TI fit into the top PCI slot (its a thick card, but there seems to be enough room in the top spot to accommodate.
Yes that's where you'd install it is in the top slot. Great question, and thanks for watching!
I have been offered this board coupled with a 5950x 16gb of ram and a corsair aio cooler for 700 UK sterling ... i would be using my 3090 FE with it ....what do you guys think? is this still decent and a good upgrade from an 8700k for 2023?
Good review btw
Definitely an upgrade. For all that plus the mobo I think it’s a pretty good deal. Maybe double the ram if you can.
@@MiddleofKnowhere Thanks for the quick reply.. I have 32 GB in my system now, so it's all good there.. and I could sell the Ram he's offered along with my mobo and cpu.. not sure if I'd keep my nh-d15 or the corsair h100i he's offered in the deal though.
Oooh awesome. Yeah I sold my old parts as well to help recoup some of the cost. I'll be doing that again as I'm upgrading a few things in the water loop and prob won't need the old distro and maybe even radiators.
