This video answers a few questions. We look into X470 vs. X570 for Ryzen 3 CPUs, like the R9 3900X, R7 3700X, or R5 3600, and also talk about how opting for B450 can save money while still achieving goals, even on the 3900X. Further, we talk about the differences between X570 and X470 (and if you really "need" X570). This video ultimately addresses which are the best motherboards for Ryzen 3000 CPUs, including the best X570 motherboards at budget, mid-range, and high-end price points.

Nice - kinda wish the ASRock X570 Creator was included on the list but still a good list!
Not complaining or anything, but maybe if the video features buildzoid you guys should put it in the title. I enjoy listening to his explanations on stuff, but sometimes not so much the topic listed in the video title, so I'll skip that video not knowing and miss out on something that turns out to be pretty good/interesting.
Please have a look at hexus.net article which states that you can PCI Gen 4.0 support on B450 and X470 based ASUS motherboards (so there would be no need for X570 to get PCI Gen 4.0):
Asus publishes X470 and B450 PCIe Gen 4 compatibility chart: hexus.net/tech/news/mainboard/132656-asus-publishes-x470-b450-pcie-gen-4-compatibility-chart/

Choosing Pc parts is such a hard task especially when money is an issue and you have a million different type of components, I ended up getting the b450 Tomahawk Max, I saw a lot of good reviews on it, and it performs just as good as any other x570 mobo for the Ryzen 3000 minus the PCIE4 and other useless features. Someone needs to actually investigate current Realtek vs Intel Lan. We need to know for real.
nah just take Intel's word for it ;)
Level 1 tech did about 2 years ago and results were that intel drivers for lan were much more stable. Intel was almost 10x more stable
@@Tallnerdyguy That was 2 years ago though.
It is true. Even if you are not an enthusiast level end-user, higher tier enterprise desktops and servers prefer to use only Intel LAN . Realtek chipsets are just cost cutting tools.
Realtek is fine and not as bad as people make it to be, but in severs and enterprise domain, Intel is preferred due its compatibility with other hardware, support, marginally lower cpu usage and the extra through output which is important for servers but not that important for client PCs.
so in the end, get Intel if you can, but if you are on budget, then Realtek is just fine.
Dude, I seriously appreciate the way you talk. Apart from how you structure your point and arguments, you actually speak in a way that's really comfortable to listen to. Colloquial yet clear as hell. Well done, man.
This didn't really anticipate 3000 series rtx
i mean the difference between pcie 3 x16 and 4 x16 is going to be a few percent (as stated by nvidia i think) so it really doesn't matter that much.
@@DavidLeAsdf 3090 doesn't use the full pcie 3 X16 bandwidth. pcie 4.0 has better performance since it just plain gets the data to the cpu faster.

You need to make similar video for gpu (2060 super, 5700 xt etc.). Sometimes its hard to pick decent gpu manufacturer.
Sometimes it’s easy, pick any brand and if you never have a problem with the card or the company keep picking that brand (for me it was MSI). If you do have a problem and customer service was shit, pick another brand.
Safe bets are MSI, gigabyte, Asus, evga for nvidia and sapphire for AMD. It always depends on the specific card though.
I'd go with Sapphire over other brands any day.
I dont think having Super Extreme VRM motherboards or even X570 chipset motherboards makes sense as you cant really overclock Ryzen 3000 CPUs. Most Ryzen 3000 CPUs just hit a wall at 4.3GHz all core frequency. So save your money and buy a decent B450 chipset motherboard like Tomahawk if you dont require PCI-E 4.0.
@Iggy He was just bashing motherboards for not having Intel LAN which IMO didnt really make sense. You would hardly find any difference between 1gbps Realtek LAN Vs. 1gbps Intel LAN or Killer LAN.
@@AmpedUpTech There's was a significant latency penalty with RealTek/Killer vs Intel on WiFi and I've had stability issues with RealTek LAN drivers.. So yeah.. Intel NIC is a pretty big deal.

One thing that makes it easier to steer towards x570 is the more standard Wi-Fi 6 Support on the mid / high end boards, especially when you start seeing higher end audio chips in most x570 boards. Buying a standalone ax pci-e card is expensive enough and it takes a slot. That's what steered me there, and with Newegg Bundling the x570 with the 3900x, it made it easier to justify the price, especially with the more standard premium features of x570 all around.
Going with the Aorus Pro Wifi x570 with the $20 bundle off gave me an x570 board for $250 that had Wi-Fi 6, dual x8 slots, pcie 4, and a pretty good onboard audio chip. Sure there were better boards for more and some had better value for less, but I think the price wasn't bad for what I got when it is already stretching the budget. The whole "spent $20 more on this or that" is difficult when you're already doing that a couple times to get to this price point.
Thanks so much for this video. Helped me pick out the motherboard for my first build. Having not done this before, I didn’t want to have to worry about getting an older CPU to update the BIOS etc.

Just interested, which one did you end up choosing? I'm going to be getting a 3700x soon and was hoping to get an x570 for future proofing, so the x570 aorus elite looked like the clear winner for me (dont want to completely break the bank). Only issue is the lack of fan headers, there are only 4, this includes the cpu and cpu opt headers
DareZ Not bought yet, but I’m going with the Aorus Elite too. Putting it in a silent base 801 (which comes three silent wings fans)with a dark rock pro 4 CPU cooler, so that covers all the cooling I need...
What about the 7080 Ti though?
Chances are, they're gonna profit from PCIe 4.0, and it's not unlikely for a processor (especially the R9 3900X or maybe even R7 3700X) to last for roughly 4-5 years.
And even if they don't, the next few Ryzen generations are still gonna be AM4, so I see quite some potential value in buying a X570 now.
That depends. Starting from scratch with a desktop like me, maybe. But if you have a really good x470 board already it would be best to wait at least a chipset generation or two while pcie 4.0 costs slide downwards and maybe AMD finds a way to use a passively cooled chipset again.

Also it has USB-C but can't power the USB-C port on my case which was another surprise not mentioned anywhere.
@@ich1nes what board did u end up with at the end and why did u choose it?
Good news, if you are going MATX, Asrock has a x570m that is only going to be around $185. So if you are getting a 200 dollar x470, you might as well just go x570, TBH.
So I did pretty good when I found a MSI X570-A Pro board for $160 then? ;) It even has two M.2 NVMe slots.
One thing I think I noticed as an indirect benefit of PCIe 4.0 is it looks like the extra bandwidth allows all devices on the bus to remain enabled at the same time. From what I could see, many AMD PCIe 3.0 boards had SATA ports being disabled if you plugged in one or more NVMe drives, and stuff like that. On my 4.0 board, that doesn't happen, all ports remain available.
Great info. Far too many "likes". If I had a dollar for each time Buildzoid said "like" or "you know" I could afford the $700 X570 board.

Since you made this video MSI added the MEG Unify which is essentially a non-RGB MEG Ace that runs cooler for $300. I've been using it for 5 months and I love it. In conjunction with the right components it yields very high percentile benchmarks. In 2nd-gen Ryzen every sub-$120 mobos were terrible except the ones made by MSI, thus MSI really didn't have any competition from Asus or Gigabyte (The Tomahawk and Mortar was praised alot as it had the best VRM for ~$95.) X570 however, is a different story.
You can literally take a random board from MSI's X570 lineup and there's bound to be a Gigabyte/Asus/Asrock board with roughly the same price that has better features.

Thank you so much! Deciding on an X570 board has been the hardest decision I have ever made in all my years of PC building. This has at least helped narrow it down to 4 boards
Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE (Best)
Asus TUF gaming X570-plus (Better)
Asrock X570 Taichi (Good)
Asus X570-P Prime (if I have to)
On point👍🏽
Tho you missed something... The Asus X570-P Prime seems to be even better than this video makes it out to be. I'd advise you to watch Hardware Unboxed comparison video of it with other boards in the same price point.

Are new prime x470 pros updated with the latest bios now?
I've mentioned this before, but I still disagree with the supposed lack of need for PCIe 4.0 with GPUs. I'd much rather allocate 8x 4.0 lanes than 16x 3.0 lanes for the same bandwidth. Even better, most GPUs still only need 8x 3.0 lanes, so you can get by with 4x 4.0 lanes. Lane economy is huge selling point for me.
So what do you use the remaining lanes for?
@@simivb Whatever I want... the point is that I have them for whatever project I come up with. An insane RAID setup comes to mind, but there are other use cases.
Just came here to get validation for buying a TUF Gaming X570 WiFi. Glad I did back in April.
Great breakdown and video. Thank you Gamers Nexus!

I was wondering wether I was going to go for an X470 or X570.
Now I'm wondering if I even need that.
Looks like the B450 might suit my needs just fine.
I bought the mATX MSI B450 "gaming" mobo today because it looked like the most promising of all mATX boards. Turns out that was the only mATX board that you sort-of recommended. Now I feel better about my purchase. Now just need to find a second hand Ryzen 3000 cpu and I'll be good.
Can we please get a video on the power table mods for the Navi cards?

Looking at getting Ryzen and was wondering why all the motherboards were so damn expensive, because I was only looking at 3rd gen which all have pcie 4.0
My GA-EP45-DS4:

3 Leds for each of PCIE slot.
and some others i guess?
You missed out talking about MSI $250-200 x570 boards and only compared asus, gigabyte and asrock :/ other than that good video.
Ya im wondering too about MSI $200-250, did u not talking it because Asus TUF or Gigabyte Aorus lite is the best on that price or what ?
No one cares about overprized MSI.
Pretty sure he would have talked about them if he thought they were good. He said earlier in the video on one series a company knocks it out of the park on the boards then the next they suck ass. He thinks the B450 MSI boards were some of the best and hints that they are not so great on X570.
The MSI $200-$250 mobos have worse VRMs compared to the Gigabyte and Asus ones, which isn't really saying much since the Aorus Elite and the TUF are the two best value4money boards on the entire system
@@Yuzume So which is better, TUF or Elite?
PSA: B450 part might be outdated. There is a shitshow with MSI boards and BIOS chip.
What?? xD
If you're gonna leave a comment like that you should at least explain wth you're talking about. For anyone reading this, I think he's referring to the limited amount of space on the BIOS chips which cuts features like RAID when you update to a newer BIOS to support Ryzen 3000 CPU's.
There is actually quite a few people trying to get MSI B450 boards to run with new ryzens. Yes, there are also a lot of people that managed to get it running without any hassle, and there is still another bunch posting negative reviews, threads on MSI technical forum, reddit, youtube, and w/e they can. As someone who has been building pcs for a living in the past, I also had this problem now, and it sucks that only thing you can do after spending a full day on building a pc is return mobo because bios on your board is just simply not working. (or wait a month for it to be fixed wich is bollocks)
@@bematthy1017 The current BIOS is not working for half the users. I would advice against buying the B450 boards until MSI releases the next BIOS version.
@@T0mash Ah that's rough... It's too bad we have to wait so long for B550 boards. Also, I just read that MSI is updating their B450/X470 boards with bigger BIOS chips either through RMA'd boards or newly made retail models.
This is the most realest straight to the point and informative video on RUclips!!! Had to subscribe!!!
at 17:05 wouldn't a pci-e 3.0 device running at x8 be able to run at full speed because the chipset still communicates with the CPU at 4.0 speeds?
yep. but then you have no bandwith left for anything else on the x4 link to the cpu (audio/sata/network).
3.0x8 could just work. PCIe is backwards compatible so it should use all 8 lanes and the chip set internally uses all 4.0x4 to the CPU giving you the bandwidth-I/O
@@steven44799 It is going to be multiplexed so audio/sata/network is still going to work albeit slower. I'm pretty sure they prioritize PCIe packets from audio and network.
@@NicolaiSyvertsen I doubt there is priority. That would be complex and quite useless as the 4x gen4 link can handle a lot of data.
@@steven44799 According to the block diagram: hothardware.com/ContentImages/NewsItem/48165/content/X570_PCIe_Lanes.jpg
The audio does not rely on the x4 connection.
According to this the Z370 chipset functions similarly (though Z370 does rely on chipset bandwidth for audio) www.gamersnexus.net/media/k2/items/cache/a97842d1611fcad5705a952b9c2c79ba_XL.jpg
And I don't believe there have been reported issues with sound/Network/SATA when using NVME SSDs on that through the chipset.

Hi Buildzoid.
I thought you'd be interested to hear about my experience with my Ryzen 3000 motherboard choice.
I'm a casual builder and prefer plug and play over manual clocking.
I watched this video and went with the Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite.
I did one of those generic best ddr4 2019 google searches and found Tom's Hardware singing the praises of the Viper Steel 4400mhz DDR4. I checked Gigabytes site and they said the board would support 4000mhz memory so I went for the 4000mhz variant.
I noticed with the board that when I set XMP profile 1, the post and boot was taking a really long time and I could hear the fans starting and stopping during the process.
Every time I went into the BIOS, I was greeted with a "cleared CMOS the bios has been reset" message.
This kept happening so I looked up online to see if anyone else had had this issue.
I found a thread full of people having the exact same issue with the X570 Aorus boards.
I updated the BIOS to the latest version and this didn't help. Deeper into the thread I saw someone mention there is a known issue where XMP profiles on this motherboard update the memory timings but not the voltage.
So I went back into the BIOS and there it was. The memory was clocked at 4000mhz, 19-19-19-39 with a 1.2v trying to maintain those numbers.
I've always avoided manual clocking because I'm not confident and knowing myself well enough would likely brick hardware.
I went to the Viper website and got the voltage setting for the memory I'd bought, then did a search to see if 1.4v was safe and it all looked okay to go ahead and change.
My computer now posts successfully and my BIOS settings remain set in place.
I know most viewers wont care because they likely know what they're doing and always manually clock for optimal performance but I think for people like me this could be a deal breaker. I thought you might find the issue interesting although I'm uncertain how rare or common this is with mobo's in general.
Do you know if the msi b450m pro vdh-max mATX works with 3rd gen ryzen cpu new to this sort of stuff so i dont have a clue lol
If you are using XMP, you should be comfortable manually overclock. It is like if you are driving at 70 mph you should be comfortable driving 90mph.
Sectioned overclocking is still overclocking.
"vrm heatsink vrm heatsink vrm heatsink vrm heatsink...heatsink"
But what is the difference between those 3 types of motherboards? I can't really wrap my head around B450, X470 or X570
Still a relevant video to this day. Amazing information. I don't think anyone could break this down more elaborately. Thanks.
Do i need PCI 4.0? heck no...that's why my new ryzen 3700x runs like a dream with my Strix X470i in my itx build...
ha, last time I build my PC it was a similar thing:
Do I need PCIe 3.0? Hell no! My something 4xxx AMD card can't max that out.
Well... in the end this PC still runs on my desk. And 3 GPUs later I'm sure it would run faster on PCIe 3.0
@@harakiwi Yeah, I build my last PC in 2012 when PCIE 3 just came out. I bought a board that had the support for it. So for my next build I hope it will last 5+ years and a GPU in like 2022 might be bottlenecked by PCI-E 3.0.
You jerk, my CPU didn’t come in yet. ;)
A 3600 will be a fine addition to my Strix B350F. Already updated my Bios for it so it is ready along with my Vega 56.

While I do play games myself occasionally and have built PC's for my kid to game on, my main interest is buying a solid motherboard with decent quality components (longevity and reliability) for production but on a mid range budget: mostly I record, mix and produce audio with a little DV editing. I'm a big fan of Buildzoids deep dives into component quality. There's obviously considerable crossover between gaming design and productivity, and I find the info on GN useful and interesting, but can anyone point me at resources that are more aimed at productivity builds specifically? For me the most interesting videos tend to be when RUclipsrs talk about the machines they actually edit on themselves as opposed to the latest greatest gaming build. RGB etc. is of zero interest obviously. Cheers - Edit: Just watched this vid through again and it does answer most of my questions thanks :)
Really like the unbiased info! Long, but lots of great info!! My 2c: At the end of the day, if you build a $1,500+ rig, why try to save $80 and go with a 470? Even if you don't need it today, at least you have a board with PCIe 4 down the road....
Yeah thats what he said at the start.. "you dont probably need a X570 but who am I to tell you what you want." This video is useful to people who are on a budget, where they can spend 80$ on a better CPU, CPU Liquid Cooler or better RAM.. a pereson spending 1500 will not think about what hes buying, he just knows his budget is 1500 and what can he get latest piece of tech for a 1500$ rig? Yeah, right X570.
Problem is when 4.0 is a thing you will need a new socket (new mobo).
Why you buy X570 is because better VRMs for overclocking.
