My N64 Turok 3 Review - • Turok 3 : Shadow Of Ob... Игры
In the ideal universe, it is refered to as a Glentendo 64.
That’s what my wife calls….oh never mind 😂
I remember dying so many times to the last boss on the N64. Now with modern controls and stable framerate I killed it first try in 1 minute. All the challenge of the game is gone in the remaster, making what was a 6-8 hour game into a 2-3 hour game now.
Yeah that’s what I mentioned too, it’s crazy how much easier the game is with a proper frame rate and better analogue controls
Like Quake 2. So much easier to play/beat, with modern controls and graphics... love nightdive & the originals...
The original wasn’t that hard to begin with
Have you played 007 Goldeneye on an emulator with mouse support? It's a complete cakewalk. You have to play on the highest difficulty now to get any sort of challenge.
What about the higher difficulty modes ?
Having struggled with the framerate on the N64 had me begging Nightdive to complete the trilogy. I'm happy they decided to finally do it despite the roadblocks you mentioned earlier in the video. So excited to play this one and for the eventual physical release it'll probably get through Limited Run. Great review of the remaster Glenn!
Thanks and hope you finally get to enjoy this one!
Turok 3 was the first time I saw the N64 render moving mouths for the cutscenes. My simple child brain couldn't handle the realism
Yeah if my memory serves me well it was actually the first
I recently picked up the first two during a Steam sale. I’ll DEFINITELY be adding this to my library as well when it goes on sale. I hope that we’ll eventually get a remaster of Turok Evolution. I’m sure Nightdive would be able to keep the thing mostly faithful, while adding in various quality of life improvements that fix up the game. Turok has the potential to be truly great! It’s too bad that the series is dead. You’d think with the resurgence of Boomer Shooters that we’d see a new rebooted entry akin to Doom 2016/Eternal. That would be fun!
Two games I’d LOVE to see get the Nightdive remastered treatment are Command and Conquer Renegade (this weird old C&C fps), and Vivisector Beast Within. Both of those were weird old games that deserve to be preserved.
I’d love to see a turok reboot but wouldn’t be sure on which direction to take the turok bloodline lineage
Picked it up on the Switch. My God they knocked it outta the park! So glad to be alive to replay this gem of a game!
On the Switch BTW
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh my God, your schedule is getting so much faster just in time for Christmas time. I already got my Christmas presents, All of this n64 content
Haha maybe one or two more this year and then I’m done….taking the holidays with family so won’t be uploading much in December
@@n64glennplantNice, have a happy birthday and a merry Christmas.
Hi Glenn, thank you for the Turok 3 remaster review. I remember I was so dissapointed that for the N64 version when I finally unlocked Joshua it was just the character models from Joseph and Danielle. I love that they added the intro movie, and the gave him the hands from his own character model, the sound effects from Turok 2 and the I AM TUROK! The viewmodel hands are unfortunately incorrect for ALL the characters and its bothering me for years haha. Joseph for example had ONE brown glove and on the other hand he wears a metal gauntlet, however ingame he has two brown gloves. Same for Danielle. Her character model has her leather bracelet wearing in het left hand but ingame its her right hand. They all have something wrong in comparison with the character model. I hate that the character models for Danielle and Joseph dont wear their Lightburden satchels.
Speaking of that, that's impossible also. There is suppost to be ONE lightburden passed down from generation to generation....but....I am getting nerdy.
Its a great remaster, and I am so glad that nightdive studios managed to pull it off. It was a day one buy for me. I hope they will make a Turok 4 and dont remaster turok evolution. What do you think?
Great review, as allways.
Btw are you buying the analogue N64 console they teased. Its still the only way to play N64 besides modding a original N64 console.
Yeah I’ll buy the analogue once it’s available, I have an ultra hdmi mod anyway but I’d still like to see what they end up releasing!
Happy birthday Glenn!
Thank you 🤩
Glad to see you back mate 👍
Thanks been super busy the past month uploading 6 or 7 videos
Dear GlennPlant. I’ve always praised Turok 3 as it was my introduction into the series. I’ve never understood why so many people disliked it. For me, this is the best game in the whole series as it offers tons of replay-ability with different characters that get different weapon upgrades. I’ll be playing this like crazy once I get back on Sunday. Thank you so much for this wonderful review!
Cheers!
Hope you enjoy it - come back and let me know what you make of it when you do
I'm guessing many people dislike this one simply because it's the most different from the original and many don't have nostalgia for this one. Gmanlives explained it well, Turok 1 was a classic arcade shooter reminiscent of the old shooters like Doom, Quake, and Duke Nukem with aspects like key-hunting and a frantic run-and-gun approach. As the industry changed so did Turok, the game steadily moved from the arcade approach to a slower more story driven and objective based gameplay similar to later shooters like Half-Life or Sin. I'm surprised this is Glenn's favorite as this is a minority opinion. My personal favorite is actually the original Turok 1. Even though 2 is considered the best, I much prefer the simplicity and straightforwardness of the original. Turok 2 became too big for it's own good and the pacing feels off to me. Plus I just prefer the open jungle environments.
I liked the 3rd one the most as well. The other games are just tedious to play, either confusing level design or terrible platforming.
I like all the original N64 Turok games for different reasons. Ironically, T2 might be my least favorite these days, which is considered by most people to be the best one. While it was defenitely a technical showcase for the N64, and it had the best weapons and the best enemy AI and variety, I just feel like the addition of multiple mandatory mission objectives, in *addition* to the key hunt, just makes the game a drag, even with the markers in the Remaster. The constant backtracking and maze-like level design got old quick. Joshua also moves like a snail compared to Tal Set from T1. Then there's the fact you have to return to old levels just to grab mandatory items and try to remember how to navigate the massive levels just to find that one key, and then complete the level again to go back. When I remembered having to do this while playing the Remaster, I turned the game off and haven't gone back yet (though I do intend to beat it... eventually).
T1 can also be frustrating with its key hunt, but it's not as bad as T2, and doesnt have any required mission obkectives. The levels are very samey-looking, but the atmosphere is on point. And while the simpler enemy AI and the lack of differing animations and weak points for shooting a specific body part certainly isn't as impressive as the later games, I actually find it to be more enjoyable in a 'run-n-gun' sort of sense. It's the best one in the trilogy if you just want to jump in and blitz around while blasting stuff.
Turok 3 gets a lot of hate for drastically altering the formula and it's noticeably different tone, but I liked what they were trying to do with the story, especially after T2 set up the introduction of the series' ultimate big bad. It's not nearly as technically impressive as T2 (beyond the cutscenes), but the more linear structure and removal of the mandatory collect-a-thon nature makes it much less frustrating. Yeah it could have been better with more enemy variety, better AI, and more animations, but these cutbacks were necessary back on the 64 in order to ensure the game ran better than T2 (even though it was still a slideshow at times). It's a shame all the cut content from the original couldn't be implemented into the Remaster, but it's understandable, as it was hard enough for them to even get the source code for the game at all.
Honorary mention to Evolution, which is easily my least favorite of the Acclaim Turok installments. It's ironic that Evolution marketed itself as returning to the series' roots, even bringing back Tal Set, from T1, but the game oddly enough felt the most different from them all. It also didn't look much better than the N64 games most of the time. Still, I respect the ambition, even if it was never fully realized. I recall there was supposed to be a sequel which was going to introduce the Campaigner (the big bad from T1) and his robotic army, which were called 'the Hollow Ones'. Sad we never got to see it.
Me personally, the one main thing I didn’t like about Turok 3 was the use of graphics on this game. Made it look so cheap, as if it was knock-off or something. I mean the game was ok when I played it like 2-3 times at least but I just didn’t like the graphics that were used. For instance, why change Adon’s appearance from how she looked on Turok 2 to another form that she looked like a whole different character?
Now I’m expecting NightDive Studios to remaster Turok Rage Wars next!!
Let’s hope so!
Only Turok game I had on the N64 was Rage wars. I was actually super happy when I found out about seeds of evil and that all the aliens in rage wars actually had a back story and more to them
It’s a huge story with a lot of lore
I want Rage Wars so bad. I loved the multiplayer with bots for the game. Sad they removed that here. I also wouldn’t mind a Turok Evolution Remaster, that game needs a facelift.
See I wasn’t a big fan of evolution myself
It's nice to see these old shooters running buttery smooth cheers Glenn I reckon your original review played a part, hopefully will sell well considering it's on the switch too.
Yeah multiple platforms will certainly help I hope fingers crossed!
Turok 3 legit looked like a DC game. The amount of geometry on the screen, the characters having modern animated faces (with teeth and everything). This remaster look like Half Life 2.
Yeah that’s the general consensus. And I’m all for it!
Such an underrated game with an underrated soundtrack. I will save this video to watch later but I'd just like to say, glad to see you back. Long time subscriber here of many years, and the N64 holds a special place for me. Hope all is well Glenn 🙏
Yes the soundtracks much more cinematic as it was a new composer for this title
I had completely forgotten about the MP until you said it. Great review, subscribed!
Welcome aboard!
christmas came early with all these glenn plant uploads !!
And Christmas came early with this release of my fav turok game 😄
the cartdrige graphics and colour was my favourite of the four Turok games in the n64. thanks glenn!
Coloured carts ftw
I'd really like to hear your thoughts on a revisit video like this for Shadow Man remastered if you haven't already. To me it was the best remaster Nightdive has done.
I have a key from nightdive but haven’t got around to it yet due to a backlog but I promise I will
@@n64glennplant that's great to hear. On a second note, Turok 3 has more content than it leads on. I won't mention any details but if you beat both stories on oblivion difficulty, you get a nice surprise. Being Australian, I got to play the switch version extra early and have sunk many hours into it
God Bless Nightdive Studios..i m eyeing this one along with Turok 2 and that star wars FPS ps1/pc remaster
Dark forces was my dads jam RIP
@@n64glennplantVery cool Doom clone indeed..i missed it in the 90ies...late condolences bro...i m sorry 😢
While I understand not implementing multiplayer to not waste money on development and servers with nobody playing it, I wish they at least made it with peer-to-peer connection, so we could play it with friends even if no one else does.
That aside, it's looking pretty good for a n64 remaster
I see what you mean, but I’d rather have what we got then nothing at all and hopefully it means they’re going to just try turok rage wars remaster
Welcome back man
Thanjs
Im definitely gonna pick this up. I played every other Turok game on N64 but never got to try this one. This game still feels new to me oddly
Hope that you enjoy it let me know
I literally said to myself “There was a Turok 3 ?!” I used to rent 1 & 2 from the good ol’ Blockbuster back in the day !
Haha see you’re not alone!
So glad you’re doing reviews, and this one definitely interested me! I’ll probably pick it up for Xbox once it’s on sale…major backlog and other obligations to tend to first. I missed out on this the first time because, like you said, late in the N64 life cycle and I personally moved on. So happy we’ll get a chance to at least try it. Hopefully they’ll do Rage Wars since I wanted to play it, but didn’t for similar reasons. I know it’s more multiplayer focused, but maybe the single player features for it and a good price point/remaster might get some interest.
We don’t want/need a turok evolution remaster so let’s hope so!
@@n64glennplantI wouldn’t be opposed to Turok Evolution if they actually rebuilt it from the ground up and drastically changed everything…so I guess that would probably make it more of a remake. I think my brother had that game for the original Xbox and I tried it out for about 10 minutes…that was enough for me, and the next time he visited us he didn’t have it anymore. I think that explains a lot 😂
great video as always
Thank you
Opening scenes of this game were brutal
Crazy how long it was for an n64 cut scene tho right!
I am imagining perfect dark with better resolution without the battle simulator and not being prepared to buy such a thing, but i get where nightdive is at.
The new perfect dark shouldn’t be more than a few years away now
Never played this back in the day even though I loved 1&2. So happy to see this remastered. Loving the work from nightdive 👍
Same here! Hope you enjoy it when you get to play
Playing it now for the first time, absolutely loving it so far!
That’s great to hear I’m glad you’re enjoying it
I thought i was the only one who had this Game in the uk. Fantastic stuff, cheers agaim Glenn
There couldn’t have been many of us!
@@n64glennplant All we need now is the N64 mag to come back to life and a Remaster of Hybrid Heaven 64. One my fav on the n64, underrated gem.
I was eagerly waiting this review. as soon as i got turok 3 for the n64 almost then years ago i watched your original review. even tho i played all turoks on the system 3 became my favorite. all my starter pokemons are called oblivion since.
Haha it’s crazy how much overall sentiments changed towards 3 over the years now
I’m so glad you’re posting a lot more lately. Hopefully you’ve been well since the reason you went on hiatus a while back and had the time to heal up. Your videos have been top tier quality and content, and I’m thankful to have been able to witness that for these past few years I’ve been subbed since the Custom Robo videos.
Thank you, my diagnosis still remains but working on managing symptoms. Plus I’m taking most of December off uploading for the holidays ✌️
@@n64glennplant at least you have that time off, my man. I hope you get better, and thank you for taking the time to still drop videos. Wish you nothing but the best, good sir! 😃
I’m looking forward to playing this.
Let me know your thoughts when you finally ply it
Nice video mate, at first I couldn´t believe my eyes that they managed to put this on PC but here we are: I´m gonna play this, ya´made me hungry for more. ;) - If only, IF ONLY they would remaster Turok-Evolution in the same kind of fashion. . . Contrary to popular believe, I personally had a great time with the 4th installement in the series and liked it A ANBSOLUTE LOT. =) - Ou right, if we shouldn´t here anything from ya´Glenn till yanuary, have some fancy´n nice decemberish hollydays friend! You earned it.
Thanks….theres a lil something something already scheduled for Sunday on here 😉
Nice review as always bro , I’m gonna get this when it goes on sale for sure to complete the trilogy
Hope you enjoy it!
This is awesome I had no idea that they even released this remaster. I'm definitely going to have to check it out.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@n64glennplant three was always my favorite Turok game so I think it's safe to assume I'm going to have a good time. LOL glad you're back Glenn loving the new content.
@@bigkmoviesandgames thank you I appreciate that
I bought the original from my game store and played it for the first time earlier this year. I was amazed with this game because I only ever played the first 2 Turok games and this game was like a new Turok experience. I thought it was a great little game and praised it on reddit and someone mentioned that they wish there was a remaster for it and sure enough here it is!
Ha you know when I first reviewed the 3rd game like a decade ago everyone hated on turok 3 but now it seems to have turned a corner in popularity
@@n64glennplant Yeah, I've seen people hating on this game, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was all about when I finally found a copy of the game. I went to reddit to praise the game because I thought it deserved way more credit than it did. One unpopular opinion, I actually enjoy the original graphics and frame rate of the original games. Might sound absurd, but I actually like that super choppy frame rate when the enemies appear, especially in T2. I like that chaos of not really knowing what's going on, so I just keep fighting and then finally the waters calm down. Lol, anyways, great video, this game actually looks super sick remastered, I may have to give it a go!
@@dreamerjazz352That's something I often think about too. Even though this remaster is an obvious technical improvement, I feel like the original feel of the game is lost somewhat. This remaster even has dynamic shadows which could never run in an actual N64. At what point is the line between remaster and remake broken? Purists will say this game should only be experienced on N64 hardware as was intended, I fall somewhere in between. Just look at how much Conker Live and Reloaded differed from Bad Furs Day, although that game did go beyond this one.
Looks great, i'm gonna wait for it to be on sale though, i didn't know about the mission markers in turok 2 remastered, that would help me out a lot because im stuck in the spaceship level with the weird bug alien enemies.
Yeah that’s quite far into the game too
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Haha thank you 🙏🏼
I got this game when it first came out and I still have the cart and box for it.
My fav of the n64 series for sure
The first Turok was so mysterious to me, how the world seemed to stretch out infinitely into the fog, and there was no explanation behind my reason for being there. Just keep moving and survive the beautiful hell... The water was undulating, the sun was flaring my lens, and watching someone squirt blood from the jugular as they slowly gurgled themselves to death made me uncomfortable in a way that only the eye-removal scene from Terminator 1 had done to my young malleable mind before. The gameplay was smooth, and the impacts were satisfying and reliable. Not that these were things I would notice, I was just totally immersed.. Turok 3 is a game I had a lot of fun with. I pointed out that "I'm glad this game exists", because it was a unique and dark experience. The atmosphere is extremely serious and Turoky, it's impressive how they managed to transfer that core Turok atmosphere between each title, while giving each one its own branding and flare, while maintaining artistic integrity and high quality. Only a few legendary trilogy shooters can say as much. But that doesn't mean a game that went in the other direction in terms of level design, and expanded upon what made Turok 1 and 2 design so great, by making the game even less linear, more vertical, and more difficult and hardcore, wouldn't be an all-around better core-design-premise, than Turok 3's obvious attempt at building a Half-Life version of Turok. I'm not saying Oblivion's levels are bad, but come on, stripping out nearly all of the large-scale exploration from the Turok series is a down-grade in hindsight.
You know it’s funny that a lot of people don’t like turok 3 because they say it’s not “turoky” enough but people really need to grasp that it’s a bloodline lineage and so it’s not all about hunting dinosaurs etc….they could do a turok set in 3023 and it could still form part of the timeline….when you look at the vailant comics they’re based off it’s a common theme like shadowman etc…a lot of people think Michael leroi is shadowman but don’t realise it’s a lineage also like jack boniface
I’m so excited to check it out!!! I loved the first and 2nd game remasters.
Now if they did a rage wars and had an excellent online mode I would be very happy
Yeah like I said in the video I think the dead lobbies for turok 2 remaster will finish any plans for that off
@@n64glennplant Yeah it’s a shame this game would be so amazing with crossplay and if they could add more levels and such.
A game that definitely deserves a remaster would be Star Wars Shadows of the Empire. What I would give to play that game with updated graphics today 🤩
I remember playing this game on N64. I would constantly have to paise the game to adjust the brightness and contrast on my tv because the game was so darn dark! I did like the series though, it had some cool weapons.
Usually the areas that are super dark are meant for Joseph’s night vision goggles so that’s a bit of a hint
I never got to play this back in the day! I'm actually debating picking this up right now because I've always wanted to play it
I really enjoyed it, few tricky spots with unusual level design but for the most part it’s quite straightforward start to finish to play and enjoy
@@n64glennplant ah sure I may as well! I have a load of Xbox rewards points saved up anyway, I could get a few vouchers!
Absolutely devastated that they didn't bother to include the bot multiplayer. No multi=no sale for me. Rage Wars was my favourite of the 4 games, and now its own remaster has never looked more remote 😢 I hope Nightdive finishes what it started and brings out both T3 multiplayer and Rage Wars some day
The world waits with bated breath hey!
Recently played through the N64 version and enjoyed it. Hoping Limited Run bring out a physical edition. Nice review of the changes, thanks!👍
Thanks, I think the physical will happen
Well Christmas comes early. I’ll have to pick it up
Hope you enjoy - let me know
I’m with you on 3 being the best! 😆 Also love that you watch Gmanlives also. You guys are both at the top of my watch list whenever your videos hit.
You're the best! We’re at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of RUclips delivery but maybe if you watch both the answers somewhere in the middle lol
Day 1 mane! They did this hella justice! Fingers crossed they have a fiddle with the nightmare that was Evolution next.
I’m hoping for rage wars myself!
Playing Turok 3 for the first time now and it's ok for the most part. The remastering job is excellent as expected from such talented people at Nightdive and you can clearly see the love and care they put into this.
The game itself is lacking that "Turok" atmosphere somewhat though. It feels very linear and "stiff" in some areas (I'm just 90mins in).
And I got some small gripes with it... Some of the enemies are a bit "hitscaney" and even firing before I've turned around the corner and see them, the soldiers are a bit "bulletspongey" and the damage I take from enemies are waaay too quick sometimes.
Other than that it's fun to see what Turok 3 was all about.
The back half of the game is much more fun and more turok like by way of find keys/switches etc
It doesn’t have the Turok atmosphere of terrible level design
I'm honestly shocked this ever ran on the n64, it looks so large in scale
Smaller than turok 2 funnily enough
There is actually a way to make the game play as fast as Turok 1 or 2. If you beat it with both Dani and Joseph, you unlock Joshua, who runs fast af.
And don’t forget the raptor unlock too!
2-3 are the best of the series. I find this one a bit too linear at times but overall a great ride. As a huge fan of the 90s comic series these games were a dream come true for me!
Are you looking forward to the new shadowman game? Will be cool to see boniface lead a game
@@n64glennplant Yes, I am actually. The remaster was a fantastic update of the original game.
I've been meaning to get to this one but havn't and now there's a remaster to play. Looking foward to it but already have a lot of games in like to play before it.
Add it to your backlog!
I don’t even remember playing this one when it came out to be honest. I’m excited to try it especially if it isn’t as confusing with the levels as 2 could be at times. I will probably grab it when the price drops. I always welcome any of these old remasters
Yeah it’s way more linear which I think helps, hard to get lost in this
I hope that we’ll eventually get a remaster of Turok Evolution.
Rage Wars is the one I have nostalgia for so I hope it at least gets a port with online, even if it's not remastered.
Have to wait and see on that one!
I never played Turok. I had some friends who loved the 1st game, but for some reason I thought the idea of shooting dinosaurs seemed silly. Now I want to go back and play tne games to see what I was missing out on.
Yes play them…play the remasters in order
Just finished it. Absolutely loved it. Like most people I had never played it before. Definitely one of the best games I’ve played this year and there have been a LOT of good games this year.
What is your game of the year?
This is great that we can finally have the original N64 Turok trilogy remastered on modern consoles! While I do prefer Turok 2, I still thought 3 was still pretty fun. It felt a bit more generic at parts, but I don't think it is as bad as many people make it out to be.
Yeah the truth is each of the original 3 are all different….its like comparing 1 against 2 when even they were completely unique right
@@n64glennplantWell to be fair they are part of the same series, so it's fair for people to carry expectations. I do think none of the sequels seemed to care much for their own burgeoning sense of Nostalgia but I also do think the first two games are a lot more alike than Turok 3 is to either of them.
I'm with you in thinking Turok 3 was the best of the original trilogy.
This is now a safe space for us to talk publically about this 😂
They need to do rage wars next. I loved multiplayer on that.
Let’s hope so!
I'm one of those people that loved 1, 2, and Rage Wars, but only discovered this game existing from this very video.
You'd think they could just copy most of the online code from the turok 2 remaster. I'm sure it's not simple but still.
Turok 3 had quite an in depth multiplayer with like weapon mastery etc that wasn’t present in 2…check out the n64 version too
A remaster done right!
Never did play this one. Have vague memories of it existing. Checked and N64 Magazine gave it 82% but I think I'd have been busy on Perfect Dark over this. However, it's very tempting to try it on Steam.
Didn't realise you're on Twitch, tho! Gave you a follow.
Thanks, only just warming up on twitch but it’s part of a project I’ll launch next year
@@n64glennplant Good luck with that, yo!
I hope they do Turok Wars next.
Me too
This will be a first play through for me. I've still to play the second remaster but I have no doubt it will be fun. My son loved all the cheats in the first game. Hopefully there are some for the third.
Yes there’s a cheats menu ✌️
When i saw that the first remaster not only kept the fog but also left it at the same distance i was out, my doubt was if this decision was because they were dumb or lazy. 3 was the only one that i liked and was hoping for a remaster, and here it is, what a beauty without any fucking fog.
I get what you mean but for me personally I kinda like the fog in 1. I know it was there originally for limitation purposes but in the lost land it kinda works….would have been cool to see that remaster have a with or without option tho!
I would love to see a remaster of Rage Wars.
You and me too
Never actually played this mostly cause as a Kid I was frankly stupid and didn't know how to play games, as I'd refuse to do tutorials and not read manuals. I played around with Turok 1 and 2 but the using C buttons to move always threw me off. I do currently own the Remasters of 1 and 2 simply cause why not and 3 will likely join them eventually.
That said I did and still do Love Rage Wars. I would love to see that get remastered even if just for its Solo content or maybe co-op with a bot as I spent so many hours on it as a kid. Now days I've tried to boot it up again and I'm not sure if I've simply been spoiled by what I feel is better controls but I constantly fumble with the controls and get my face kicked in by the first boss.
Hope you enjoy this remaster whenever you do pick it up
i have been play on this on my switch for about a week. its not as ground breaking as the first, not as difficult as the second, but its actually more fun imo.
Well put
I've unlocked the Raptor to play as after finishing as Joshua
Skills right there!
Nightdive does it again.
Awesome set of chaps hey
I want a Hexen remake. They did Quake and Quake 2 now its time for Hexen
Would be interesting but also get Hexej 2 on n64!
As much as I love Turok 2, I'm with ya in that overall Turok 3 is the best of the N64 Turok games
This is now a safe space for us all to talk openly without fear of being chastised 😂😂😂
We need physical release!
Maybe that’ll happen right
I actually got 1 online game in Turok 2. 🤔 it was pretty neat
Haha when was that?
They really should have kept local multiplayer. I understand no online but no local multiplayer is a big letdown.
Wasn’t an issue for me - I have no friends
Ever since I played the remasters of Turok and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil I wondered if Nightdive was gonna remaster Shadow of Oblivion? I remember renting the first 2 games as a kid but I never played the 3rd one. I saw it once on a Mom and Pop shop in the States and that's it. So I feel very happy to know that not only it's getting a remaster but that Nightdive is updating it as well. From the gameplay footage I've seen Turok 3 looks impressive for the N64. It's almost similar to Half-life for the PC. I'll still wait for a sale though.
It kind of sucks that the multiplayer was axed from the remaster. I heard it was fun. I kind of wish they added it via an update. Now that the trilogy is complete I hope Nightdive remasters the Rage Wars spin-off and or maybe add a collection of the Turok games for the game boy/GBC and GBA.
Rage wars would be an interesting game to see
I have been playing this series ever since they came out, i have played through all three remasters, and I can say without a doubt that 1 and 2 are still better games but 3 is still a good game. Though 1 is my all time favorite I would say 2 is the best out of the 3 combining everything good from 1 and 3. Now as remasters, 3 is the best of the three with better and proper remastering across the board especially on ND's latest KEK engine, and i have stated several times on their Turok posts and videos that ND needs to go back and upgrade the older Turok 1 and 2 remasters. Turok 3 does remastering amazing just like their Quake 1, and especially Quake 2 remasters were. Just to compare their Quake 1&2 remasters, not ONCE did I ever have a framerate issue with Quake 2 but still will have framerate issues with their Quake 1 remaster mostly to do with their lighting and shadows. and THAT is still one of the biggest problems with Turok 1&2 remasters is they both will have features and functions that will cause framerate drops even though my system is beyond their highest settings. This is an obvious issue with their older KEK engine, hence why I state they need to go back and upgrade those two older remasters. For the price we pay for all 3 games, they damn well need to go back and upgrade them. Yes we know they used the PC versions of 1&2 for the base of the remaster, but they NEED compare the N64 versions with the PC to have the older titles look and sound closer to the originals but with obvious better textures, sounds, models, and fix major bugs and issues present. Hel even some gameplay choices need to be ironed out, maps expanded, and maybe even more Turok 2's talismans have more practical uses. The quality they did with 3, they need to do with 1&2, even as far as adding back in cut enemies and areas. But as a game itself, Turok 3's flaws will show with maps and areas being too fast or short, ENDLESS respawning enemies, and nothing like Turok 1 but instant usually from out of sight. You can barely admire an area without 2 or more enemies spawning back in and making a straight line towards you. The AI needs improving, areas and levels need to be longer, we need more ammo held, need armor, Turok 3 itself as a game was never full fleshed out and it shows and standard remastering will fix that problem. Even when it hit in 2000 I remember feeling a bit disappointed at the final product, and i did beat it with both main characters.
To summarize, the remaster in itself is fantastic, almost as good as the Quake 2 remaster. But Turok 3 itself has many flaws and they show, the game is good and fun but it really needs a deep and longer remastering with more interactivity and longer time spent on each level, and more explanations as Turok 2 did. IT NEEDS QUICK SAVING AND A MAP TOO.
And didn’t they make a big deal about cross play turok 2 on switch and pc but Xbox one still hasn’t been updated to include it in cross play?
Great review Glenn! I always found Turok 3 ridiculously fascinating. I see a lot tend to dislike it because it draws inspiration from Half Life but I always found that part impressive
Yeah I don’t see why many cite that as a negative, if it even gets 50% to half-life then it’s a positive in my book
@@n64glennplant For the hardware Iguana/Acclaim was working with, I'd say they nailed it in scale. Fingers crossed we'll get Rage Wars to finish off the set, I've always wanted to play it with a person but none of my friends find N64 shooters very appealing lmao
Nightdive are such cowards for not remastering the game we all truly want.
Quest 64.
Only real ones know that 😂
In all seriousness, Quest 64 does have its charm, even if it's way too simplistic. It kind of reminds me of a 3D version of Dragon Warrior/Quest 1.
It would be interesting to see the lost content brought back (or did the GBC version do that already?).
@@3dmarth Quest 64 is extremely charming. It wouldn't be such a curiosity if it wasn't.
I picked up the first two remasters on sale a while back and played through the first one. I’m still struggling to figure out if i want to play through Seeds of Evil on the n64. I know it’s going to be an inferior and more frustrating experience in many ways but the fact that it was an FPS n64 release was what got me interested in the series to begin with. Plus the cart is only $20 compare to the $100 for Shadows of Oblivion.
Stick to the remaster of turok 2 it’s hard to go back and play it on cart now
Cool that Night Dive sent you a copy. I wonder if MVG is a subscriber?
He’s not a sub of mine, I’m a sub of his. Nice bloke but I don’t think he works for nightdive anymore
Um…MVG isn’t in nightdive anymore, he works at limited run games now
I'm conflicted on this release. I'm not sure I agree with Nightdive's choice to even pour their resources into making it for such a small audience. I don't' think it'll sell well and this is likely be the last Turok remaster from Nightdive. They'll do much better business with continuing the Star Wars Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series or moving on to Timesplitters and 6th generation console 007 games (the latter being my ultimate dream).
It was probably based on expecting lower sales than turok 2 and even 1 but less resources on it and cut multiplayer so may turn a profit hopefully!
I love Nightdive
You and I too my friend
I'm glad that the 3rd Game got a well done remaster, also on Switch and I like the improvements. Otherwise the OG N64 Cartridge is expensive and I know it got the Half Life 1 vibe, but Turok 3 seemed to me a more interesting game🤔🙂
Yeah turok 3 is starting to creep in popularity again so the carts going up…plus it’s the rarest one so there’s that too
@@n64glennplant The Game prices nowadays are ridicolous. Few days ago the german old rpg Gothic 2 with the Addon Night of the Raven, was sold by thq store for 30 bucks. A friend of mine told me they selling it for 100 on ebay, I was like man dats sound shitty and sick😐 About Turok, I tried 1 on N64, wasn't my case same goes for 2 also on N64 with expansion pak, nope I wiped out. 3 seemed to me more interesting, which I kinda like it more🙂
A few things. I've heard many say (myself included) that the price of this remaster is unreasonably high. At $30, whereas the other two remaster went for $20 at launch is a steep increase. This is specially considering the campaign here is much shorter and the game even lacks multiplayer, we are essentially paying more for less content! Secondly, talking about the game itself now, it is just odd how this game ends in a cliffhanger, considering the new generation of consoles was just around the corner. The end of the trilogy was a perfect time to wrap-up the story arc started in Turok 1: Dinosaur Hunter. Maybe Turok: Evolution was supposed to continue the story from 3, but as we all know that game took a completely new direction. It became a prequel to Turok 1. Lastly, I didn't know you also followed Gmanlives Glenn? Now I like you even more, haha.
I’d have personally wrapped up the trilogy with 3 and then maybe had Danielle’s twist split into a new franchise maybe tomb raider esq?
I’d argue that perhaps one reason this costs more if that although the games shorter it was more work as it’s not like they could just use the pc source codes of the game like they could do with the other games as it was n64….also 2023 inflation lol 😝
@@n64glennplant True. I do hope Nigh Dive explains the price increase in a tweet or something, 'cause it's got us perplexed.
A little tidbit, I think a lot of people didn't realize, is that Atari bought out Nightdive Studios. I wonder if this has anything to do with the price increase. I was hoping Nightdive won't change, but we'll see.
@@theresapimentacointheglove8760 Interesting, didn't know about the Atari buyout. I was going to wait until the Steam Winter Sale to pick this one up.
I love these remasters - it's incredible to think that all the work that went into these games is given a new lease of life and a new audience almost 25 years later! I'd love to know what some of the original developers and artists must think, must be very satisfying for them, and I think it further validates video games as an art form, something that's important to preserve. - David
Which game would you like to see be done next?
@@n64glennplant Good question Glenn! From an N64 perspective....I always thought Body Harvest was an interesting concept and a bit ahead of its time in some ways but let down by the limitations of the console and fog and the like. So a remaster of that might be interesting, if not something that would sell too many copies I imagine!
I'm just waiting for my Rage Wars remaster.
You are not alone
I'll be honest I was surprised this game ever got a port seeing as it never gotba PC version to work from. Personally I always enjoyed the story of this game as it was way more fleshed out than the second which was still pretty generic. I also thought the levels were better as the second they were at times overly large and easy to get lost in. It was the one game in the series that most seemed to have never played too because of when it came out.
Yeah and I think that’s maybe why this remaster may do quite well for nightdive because so many people haven’t yet even played the n64 version
Shame about the multiplayer being cut, especially if they do wind up remastering Rage Wars down the road since Turok 3's multiplayer was an improvement over it. I'll sit this one out for now and wait for a sale, since I just recently replayed the N64 version a few months back.
Great game though, holds up quite well. You're not wrong in thinking it's the best of the original three, I think it's certainly the least flawed from a game design standpoint. That said, the flaws of Turok 1 & 2 don't run all the way to their very core, so I think a hypothetical Turok reboot should follow in the footsteps of those... Half-Life's cool and all, but we need more FPS metroidvanias.
Yes, so lazy.
I’d love a reboot of this series I think enough times passed that people forget many of the flaws and have those rose tinted glasses towards this franchise that they’d be able to get some buzz
Hey Glenn! Looking fwd to playing this one after all these years. Nightdive studios is great but they still haven’t fixed the keyboard issue for the console releases of Exhumed/Powerslave. Could you bend their ear?
They’re usually quite responsive on socials or support channels if that helps
@@n64glennplant I tried that a couple of times in the past 6mo but if I m the only one asking (niche bug on a niche game) they probably won’t have much of a reason to allocate the time :(
Hopefully Turok Rage Wars is next
Let’s wait with baited breath
really feel like if we had more online matches in turok 2 maybe they would see that having the multiplayer for turok 3 would be worth having and maybe even a rage wars remastered. id play more online for turok 2 if there were more playing
They added cross play for switch and pc but I’ve never seen the update added to the Xbox version which I think would probably have a good player count at times but anytime I’ve tried playing for years nobody’s been online in it even yesterday
Will the do Evolution do you think? Still have that one for Gamecube but it was harrrrrrrrrd!!
I’ll never say never now!
I would actually agree that Turok 3 is the best of the N64 trilogy, or at least I'd say 2 even if I enjoyed 3 more. The first two can meander a bit and the linear nature of 3 makes it more focused. 1 is a little too open for its own good, and I was never able to beat it without cheats. Skill issue, sure, but I was also too young to be playing it lol. 2 is an abolute banger but still has that nagging issue of meandering level design at times, though it is more focused than 1 and a nice improvement. 3 is the Half Life wannabe I got to experience being that young with no knowledge of what the former even was. Didn't think they'd remaster this one, and I'm so glad they did, but I will say that at least the launch state makes the game feel tough, it seems like the higher FPS makes it feel more challenging, but I can still push through it and relive my memories. Love the content as always, Glenn, without people like you this may have never happened.
Thank you that’s touching you’d feel that way! Now about rage wars remaster….
@n64glennplant I'd be very up for it, I did own and enjoy it a lot just playing the campaigns that were multiplayer mode matches with very of-the-time AI. It gets silly hard when you unlock certain characters and go through their campaigns, but of course the focus was always on the multi-player, and it's arguably the best on the N64. It was also one of those games where the expansion pak made an absurd difference; one that wouldn't be seen in a remake, but damn did it really sharpen things up.
