    I actually love the fact that Joshua dies at the epilogue. The lore of the games is all about reincarnation, with "Turok" being more one title than a person. A chosen person must become Turok, the guardian of the world, who's job is to fight against the monster of the week. It keeps the series fresh and more interesting. It also tackles the fact that "Seeds of Evil" and "Shadow of Oblivion" were part of one tragic domino effect. It reminds me of how Gordon Freeman "saving" the world in the first Half Life, was the pivot point for the Alien Colonization in Half Life 2. Underrated gem.

    7:30 I realized slowly that a good part of Joseph's kit (and quite possibly the character as a whole) is more or less directly inspired by Adrian Shephard from the HL Opposing Force expansion. Both characters have NVG, a combat knife, laser guided pistol, and sniper rifle, and both also experience a segment of the game entirely through the nightvision goggles (in OP4, that's some of the maps comprising Foxtrot Uniform).
    Regardless, I played the original 3 Turok games years ago thanks to my Uncle having stashed away copies of N64 games he used to own (amusingly, he kept all the good ones when he sold off his N64 decades ago) and honestly this remaster looks very promising. I'm definitely going to check this one out, as I liked the original Turok games and seeing Turok 3 without the infamous N64 texture blur is like removing the smudges from your glasses.

    I always felt like Turok 3 was a ps2 game trying to run on the N64 and seeing this footage in 60fps sort of confirms that for me. When I first played it I was very impressed with how they managed full mouth to voice synchronization in some scenes, something I've only ever seen Conker do on the N64 before.

    It's so cool to see this game running at more than 10 frames per second. Also, for anybody who hasn't played the original, it was also impossible to dodge most enemy attacks. They would miss you by about 20 feet and you'd take damage anyways, so the whole game was pretty much trying to shoot everything before you got hit and just expecting to die a certain number of times to reach the end.

    I grew up on the Turok stories, from 1 to evolution, and then that abomination in 2008. The stories from the first three alone were really good, and while I liked playing evolution, it didn't click as well as the first three. I already bought and played through the remasters of 1 and 2, and it's such a huge game changer when you modernize those controls. Someone in the comments said it's almost godlike going from the N64 to modern, and I couldn't agree more. They've fleshed out everything, runs very smooth, and I more than enjoy my time again with these classics. Can't wait to buy this one, and see more awesome work from NDS

    I grew up towards the end of the Nintendo 64 era and it's central to most of my childhood memories of time spent with friends and long summer holidays. Whether it was Mario 64, Extreme G (Wipeout clone), Diddy King Racing, Quake 2, Perfect Dark, Forsaken, Pilot Wings, Jet Force Gemini, Shadowman, Rogue Squadron, Lylat Wars (Starfox 64), Shadows of the Empire (flawed but still hugely enjoyable), Zelda: Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask, Blast Corps, Wave Race, Banjo-Kazooie, or the sheer multiplayer joy of Goldeneye and Mario Kart. The N64 was a seminal and iconic console.
    This video is great timing because I've just downloaded the remastered Turok 2 which is probably my favourite N64 game. Turok 1 is average to good, Turok 2 is on Perfect Dark and Goldeneye level. The console generation was over by Turok 3 on N64 so not many have played it. I can't wait to get stuck in. Thanks Gman, really appreciate your content.

    11:26 The Turok games had bad performance on the n64, but Perfect Dark takes the cake I think. I remember a couple years ago I moved into a house with a mate. It took a few days to get internet installed so I broke out my PS1 and N64 so we could play some couch multiplayer retro games. We had heaps of fun playing Turok 2 and 3 again after so long. They were all chuggy but we could play through it, I can say, with a straight face, that despite being rough as guts they're still playable. Then I decided we should play Perfect Dark as that was me and all my old primary school mates' favourite back in the day. We'd all bring our 64 controllers to whoevers house we were staying at and just play Perfect Dark against each other and bots until the sun went down and came back up again. So we tried it again and that game runs at like 15 frames per second so long as nothing is happening on screen. The minute you have even a single enemy on screen it becomes a powerpoint slide show, and god help you if you fire any explosive weapons. I can't believe I never noticed it as a kid, or at least wasn't bothered by it. We could only stomach a few matches before it was just too much lol.

  • @shikulli
    @shikulli Год назад +1

    I'll have to try it out. When I was 3, my dad got me Turok Evolution because I liked dinosaurs. Of course, the opening scene caused my mom (who already separated from my dad) to freak out and kick out my dad with his M rated game. He bought a ps2 so we could play it at his house and it was truly great... 22 years later, I've heard legends of the "good" turok games but never tried them because I thought my Turok was great!
    With this remaster, I shall try to see how much better it is. I'm sure the internet is right and I just need to shed my nostalgia.

  • @CaptToilet
    @CaptToilet Год назад

    I played the game when it came out on N64 and there was 4 things I remembered specifically.
    1. The bad framerate
    2. The city level
    3. The opening cutscene
    4. The great facial animations(for the time)
    Rented, beat, and moved on. It didn't leave a lasting impression on me like Turok 2 did. Having just finished the remaster earlier this morning my attitude hasn't changed. It starts strong but fizzles out roughly in the chapter 3 / 4 region. While the game itself may be average at best, the remaster attempt is top tier. There is a reason why nightdive is on my top list of developers. Bring on the next project.

    Played all 3 Turoks on N64 recently and I have to say, 1+2 are pretty much playable today. Yeah, it's a little hard to get into if you are a spoled gamer of today, but I think most of the time it was between 20-30fps and maybe my old muscle memory helped (I'm old, you know!).
    But Turok 3 was a different beast, even in low-res the framerate was so bad that most of my shots didn't hit and I was out of ammo in many instances. So looking to play the remaster, first time I'm gonna finish part 3 since even my younger self wasn't able to play through back in the day :D
