@@n64glennplant so good to see you still kicking take all the time you need.
@@n64glennplant I hope that you are doing fine, my girls and I enjoy your videos quite a lot, best for the family.
What happened? Did the jab wreck your health?
@@jasonmyers8278 no it’s not vaccine related 👍
I think a big reason why we often suck at these games today is a lack of patience. We've been so spoiled by the usability and convenience of modern games that when you go back to play an old one and it doesn't hold your hand at all it becomes very frustrating. When we are kids we just stuck at it until it clicked but now we expect to be able to jump right into a game
I think it's true that a lack of patience plays a big role, but I don't think it's just because the game isn't holding my hand enough. My lack of patience is more attributable to not feeling as motivated to overcome the challenges of the game anymore. I already overcame them 20 years ago, so climbing the hill again doesn't seem worth the effort, and the payoff if I did doesn't seem worth it either. If I take the time to master a 20 year old game (again), I don't have friends or a community to boast about my accomplishments with, so that's a loss of motivation. And the game's graphics are usually bad by today's standards, so any cutscene I see after beating something just feels like a silly letdown - block characters saying three muffled lines of dialogue, and the credits roll. Not worth the effort. But back then, I think we all wondered what was on the other side of the mountain - how awesome might an ending cutscene be, what kind of new unlockable items or characters might there be, can we beat our or our friend's best time, etc. etc. The games were still surprising us, there was so much new to explore, and they still gave us a high to chase. Without the high, what's the point? Nostalgia - that's the only real purpose anymore, and nostalgia wears off pretty fast.
yes motivation and lack of patience is playing a big role ...
when im going back to a title, im trying to watch a commecial of it before playing, to put me into the mood of the era of the game in question (if im spelling right)
I can agree with that for sure!
@@Puck90a oh, defintely. I decided to play through Glover as my first game of 2022 and... oh boy, the difficulty is insane! By the 5th world I had to use cheats for infinite lives because the alternative would be dropping the game altogether.
If you didn't wait for more than 30 seconds at a loading screen, you didn't have a childhood. 2 minute loading screens, those were the days.

I'd bring the 64 to the bowling alley to use their big screen to play Wetrix.. I can't remember breaking 100 million, but my scores were always above 60 million lol. Crowds would gather and drink and watch.
That’s nuts, always found that game damn hard!
Hey Glenn, haven't seen an upload from you in a while. Hope you're well.
You are very good at creating an exceptional and engaging comment section on your videos. Which I think is something really remarkable for youtube, as so many comment sections are just dumpster fires. Hope you know that. You have a very interesting and valuable perspective on games too (kinda like snesdrunk does, who I know you're also a fan of). It's one of the many reasons I like your videos so much. I hope (selfishly) that you return to putting out videos, but even more than that, I just hope that you're doing well, even if that means no new videos :)
Thank you - hope to be well enough to continue this at some point
Happy new year. Hope all is well. Just discovered your channel. Excellent stuff. Hope you come back soon. Stay safe.

Jet Force Gemini and Shadows of the Empire were 2 games I became so good at, but today I get absolutely destroyed early on in the game.
Have you tried the rare replay version of JFG?
@@n64glennplant Jet force Jemini is one of my favourite games from the N64. I haven't played it in maybe 15 years. I have the rare replay box sitting waiting to be opened. I bought it solely for that title (since Goldeneye wasn't on it) Really hoping that game has stood the test of time.

Hi Glenn. Sorry to hear about your health - whether it be physical or mental - I hope you're back to 100% or as close as you can be very soon.
Love this channel - do you still have any issues of N64 Mag? Had to leave the family home when I was 16 and managed to take 5 issues with me that I still have to do this day.
I think almost everybody felt like being above average in Tony Hawk, that's the strength of the game, making you feel like you are very good at it.
only in the sense that I could get to the end of the story modes
I ended up finishing evey Tony Hawk 100%. Bought the remake and i sucked so hard...

I'm loving these anthology review Glenn... what an interesting angle to take your channel
For what its worth, I hope you know all of your viewers, at least the worthwhile ones, would be completely comfortable and supportive if you branched away from N64...
I noticed you seem to have an affinity for big box pc games and movies from the 90s and such. Or just retrospectives on past personal memories, albeit what your comfortable with, would be compelling as well.
Honestly you could review a tree stump in the middle of a quiet suburb and you would STILL make it engaging.

Man that Re-Volt clip in the intro. That game is WAY harder than I remember it lol
You can play it "remastered" on the PC as RVGL and it's as hard as nails but still fun. I've got an XBOX controller mapping keystrokes with AntiMicro as the best found control option.
The remasters very playable!

ISS, any one of them, for certain. Back in the day I had both a Nintendo 64 and a Neo Geo CD. I often joke that every time a loading screen popped up on Super Sidekicks 3 me and my brother could finish a match on ISS 98 before the NG CD would start the match. These days I can barely figure out the controls properly on either game and winning a match seems like a Herculean task.
Haha yeah even with controls it’s tough!
I'm so glad you mentioned Ridge Racer 64! I bought the game recently and couldn't believe how well it played. I suck at the game as well but love that it was released on the N64!
Another game that seems harder to me nowadays is Mario 64; tring to remember the red coin locations and decipher the riddle goals for each star is hard!
The LGR reference for duke nukem section was oddly satisfying in w fanboy way. Like some nostalgic comic book crossover lol damn what has lockdown done to me eh? Haha
Felices fiestas

Was that RC Revolt I saw in the intro? I remember that being far too twitchy to enjoy, but I did complete SCARS instead. Extreme G was another racer where the combination of speed and frames meant I was friends with the wall far too much to win at it. World Driver Championship was my fav N64 racer, but I've not played it in 20+ years so can't guarantee I'll be any good now! I am currently almost at the end of Turok (PC) and it turns out I must have only got to level 2 on N64 back in the day as I can't remember any of the other bits

Welcome! Took your time getting here 😅
If you haven't already, try pressing the Z button just upon landing to suck in the impact. I forgot that one for like a year and couldn't figure out how I used to play it so well.
@@shaun8062 If you're going for fast times or speedruns, you have to hold Z pretty much the whole time to stay at max speed lol. But yeah using Z and landing "flat" really helps.
@@n64glennplant Thank you haha :)
@@jazzabighits4473 Right, I knew that part, but at first it seemed counterintuitive to have it held down in the air or landing until i figured it out again.
For me it is Top Gear Rally. I remember unlocking everything in that game, and now I can't even finish the first track without my car looking like a crushed soda can
Haha the physics are way too floaty
While you posted Warzone, I usually choose Attitude to go back to from time to time (it's the better of the two IMO), I have it on PS1...but you're right, I'm always trash at it when I go back. I might build up a little muscle memory as I play, but it's gone by the time I go back. We can go in No Mercy right now though...I'll take on anyone, still play that enough to be good at it lol.
I swear it'd be easier to list the games that I don't suck at now compared to back in the day. You've listed a lot of the ones I immediately thought of, like Ridge Racer 64, Tony Hawk and 1080. And Guru Larry mentioned Waverace. Even Mario 64, which I think holds up well, I still don't quite have the finess my younger self did. I could do the triple/wall jump trick to get on top of the castle early, but tried for hours recently to no avail. It's just gone. Cruis'n Usa is another one like that, where it's still fun, and the basic gameplay still holds up, but I know I was better at it, and corners that would've been easy for me to breeze through back when now give me trouble. All this modern fidelity gameplay and fancy Forza rewind magic has spoiled me, and dulled my 64-bit edge.
Haha rewind in racing games is a plague j think!
I really don't have troubles getting back into games like F-Zero X and Super Mario 64, i think that the controls hold up and that i hold up in the games, maybe because i was a VERY late N64 adopter, but at the same time, those games have many instances for you to start from scratch and get better at them, for instance, when i want to do just a quick game of F-Zero, i just do Death Match, probably my worst score, but a good place to start.
I often feel good at games until I join online multiplayer 😄
Haha that too
Holy crap I haven’t thought about Tom and Jerry War of the Whiskers in years!
Fists of furry 😉
The title for this video is genius! I had to watch. And for your information I am still awesome at Tony Hawk ;)
Have you checked out how good you are at the remaster?
Not yet. I don’t own consoles as I play games on pc
Funny thing is that as a adult I have more patience than I was a kid
Haha I don’t for sure!
I used to be so good at single player on both GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. But booting up the games nowadays is a sad reminder that I’ve become a shadow of my own gaming self.
If I could’ve battled it out with myself as a 14 year old, the younger me would both crush me and laugh in my face.
Thankfully there’s still fun to be had. My closest friend and I still battle it out on multiplayer a few times a year, and we’re at about the same skill level 😊 We use the original controllers on the original cartridges. Nothing beats the original 😊
For me, it wasn't an N64 game, but rather an arcade game call metal slug. I can finish that game with a single credit when I was 9, it was awesome. Doubt I can do it now.
Another arcade game that I can finish with a single credit was a light gun game called ghost squad. And I unlock everything from that game. Its an arcade game with a save on card feature.
Man I spend so much money at arcade.
Metal slug is awesome, classic series
One of my greatest gaming achievements : earning all platinum trophies on Ridge Racer 64 when I was like 12 or 13 😅
Now I bet I can barely turn / drift a corner on any of the tracks lmaoo
I have a hard time with the limited camera on football games going back. The arrow tells you nothing about the defenders which is the most important part of passing.
Back in the day I was able to gold medal all the missions in Star Wars Rogue Squadron and was pretty good at Episode 1 Racer, now I struggle just to complete most of the basic mission requirements in Rogue Squadron, and don't even get me started on Pod Racer lol.
Mario Kart 64 - all powerslides used to be a muscle memory for me, but when I came back a couple of years ago to get some footage for my channel, I had problems to actually stay on tracks like Choco Mountain or Banshee Boardwalk. How embarrasing.
Donkey Kong 64 - I liked this game back in the days, but playing it again last year was an absolute torture. I don't have enough skill and patience for it at all and I will probably never return to it again.
I am afraid to go anywhere near F-Zero X, and I beat all cups on every difficulty setting with each character back in the day.
Beaver Bother in DK64 is just nostalgia hell
F zero x is a really tough one to go back too also
I didn't own DK64 back in the day and I'm currently trying to beat it. It's taking forever, because the game is so overwhelming and confusing. I don't feel like booting it up and it saddens me.
@@TrophyJourney I feel you, I did own DK64 back in the day but it's one of the games I never actually beat because it was too confusing for me :(
Any chance you will be doing any more videos?
Super Mario Kart on the SNES played it recently and it’s so difficult it’s painful. In the day I was like Senna always pushing the edge and racing line, hoping and gliding around corners. It’s like I’m driving a tank on ice skates on a razor blade last time I picked it up.
Yeah those snes racing games are hard to go back to
I've been playing 1080 for a few months now, whenever I go over my parents house, and can reliably beat hard but still get smoked by Deon Blaster at some point on Expert.
One thing i like doing is starting match race and not touching the controller and slowly fall to the bottom, which is how i snowboard IRL. It's very ZEN.
I wish I could find if clothes from that game actually existed & manufactured by Hilfiger. I have vague memories of something at Macy's but the internet has been useless.
Dion blaster is my go to normally!
Replayed the THPS games on N64 during the start of quarantine then bought the remaster for switch and then replayed the originals and … yeah it’s harder to go back to these ones nowadays
Yeah they’re so tough, remasters make them more playable now in a good way
Please make more videos, I miss this channel
What is the name of that SHMUP looking game shown briefly at the beginning just after Tom & Jerry?
Bangai-o?
I almost got everything unlocked in top gear rally. nowadays icant hardly get past one curve without crashing somewhere
yeah I find that way too floaty, people hate me for it lol
Glenn, where art thou - we need your opinions and reviews! 😀
Thanks, hope to be back soon but still a bit too sick
I somehow got through Banjo-Tooie as a kid without rage quitting once.
15 years later on the Xbox 360 port and I'm constantly dying and have no clue why I'm struggling. I rage quit'd a few times and pretty sure I (gently) threw my controller during Grunty Industries level.
Joke's on you, I've always sucked at video games! You never have to worry about perishable skills if you have no skills to begin with.
Haha you win the internet for today!
I would love to see modern tourneys of classics like this. See how players today would adapt.
While not N64, I used to be amazing at DKC trilogy as a child. Going back now I can mostly remember where everything is at but it’s far harder than I remember. I’m not sure if it’s my reflexes slowing down or too many JRPG’s but it’s hard to me now.
JRPG means Japanese Role playing game, right? Are there distinct differences between those and regular RPG's?
@@Yarp-xj3rd Yes. I’m not an expert so I’m sure someone will correct me but Japanese Roleplaying games typically have a silent protagonist with a defined name. They usually are turn based and oftentimes start off with a kid or some amnesiac villager and end with killing a god or god level being. They’re heavily story-focused compared to some western RPGs like Skyrim and such. Those as you know are open ended. Great examples are like Wild Arms, Final Fantasy or Grandia.
@@JoshuaJacobs83 ah ok. I understand what you mean. I haven't really played any tbh. My mates used to like the Final Fantasy games but I never really got into them.
See I’ve remained good at those, well maybe 1 and 2 - never did like 3 much
What game are we looking at here? 0:21 - any help is appreciated!! Doesn’t look familiar in the least bit!
1 Game I have in mind is Twisted Metal 2 for the Playstation. I used to be a problem back in the day with that game, But today, I just end up fumbling my vehicle all over the place. Times were much simpler back then Glenn.
Twisted metal was so good back then
How do you get through Curves in Xtreme G?
Got this Game two Years ago and i failed brutally haha
Haha it’s a rough game, the sequels a little easier I think now
If you think about ANY game that was definitely hard to play the first time round, I have too. Not too long ago, I can remember playing dk64 and banjo on the switch online service and what I found was very surprising to me was how hard both platformers were to learn the controls the first time around. But they were not bad. As soon I got the controls down pat, I slowed got used to each move one by one and, as a result, got to respect the difference between both gameplay and different styles of play you had to adapt to. Loved them both and still do to this day.
Hope you had a great Halloween friend 🎃
I remember being able to do 360 drifts on Ridge Racer and i won the world league with the worst team in ISS2000 on the hardest setting
That’s some skills there
Loving the standup routine, nice jokes!
Also available for weddings and bar mitzvah’s
i really you are alright glenn, keep it up !
Absolutely mastered 1080 when I was a child. Played it a few years back, and wanted to slam my temple off the corner of the coffee table.
Haha yeah it’s so damn rough even with the short cuts
Bomberman 64 The second attack. Oh my word. I could beat the game without dying one time and now I run out of continues before I make it to the third boss.
On the flip side however, I used to struggle when I was playing some of the Mini games in the Zelda games that I blew through without much issue now.
At least the music is amazing while you’re failing! Haha
Very innovative topic!
I've recentry tried 1080© Snowboarding, but now i fall on every track at least once.
But what i can't understand that i'm unable to open many tracks on Star Wars:Racer. -Game was easy to complete over 20 years ago. And i have not lost any of my skills on F-Zero X, Wipeout 64 nor Ridge Racer 64, so what the heck for i suck on Pod Racer? I suck on Donkey Kong 64 too these days! And dare i say it, Mischief Makers has become hard game.
But sometimes, i pick really hard game to complete again, just convince myself that no, i am not old timer.
Have you tried the remaster for episode 1 racer!
While I haven't played Smash Bros. for the N64 in a while, I know that I won't be nearly as good at it as I used to be. Back in the day, I played that game so much that I was burned out on it and didn't even want to touch it.
I'm curious to see how well I'd do with Goldeneye in multiplayer. I can do fairly well in Perfect Dark against Simulants, but I have no clue how well I'd hold up against human opponents.
Recently, I was playing WWF No Mercy and going through one of the Championship modes (I don't remember if it was the WWF Championship or not) and on the final match against Vince and Shane, I got my rear end handed to me several times before I beat it. I didn't remember the game being THAT difficult.
See I’ve always sucked at smash haha
@@n64glennplant I'm certainly not someone that would have won any tournaments, but I'd say I was a pretty good player.
To be fair, even when I was in my prime with that game, there would be plenty of people out there that would have mopped the floor with me.
What difficulty sims on Perfect dark? Also, do you put normal sims or the specialty sims like vengesim/speedsim/etc?
@@jazzabighits4473 I currently have three simulants: HardSim, KazeSim, and FeudSim. HardSim is of course on the hard difficulty level, the others are normal.
As for the weapon set I use:
1. Falcon 2
2. Falcon 2 (silencer)
3. DY357 Magnum
4. Shotgun
5. Shield
6. Combat Knife
Usually I play to 15 kills.
@@Scubagon Oooh interesting settings. Feudsim can be interesting if he chooses you, I also like to put in Judgesim, because he tends to even out the scores by going for the person who is in first place. KazeSim always annoyed me because of its incessant punching even when it has access to weapons, causing screen blur/blindness.
Interesting set of weapons, sometimes I play those but I like to play
1. Cyclone
2. Phoenix
3. Superdragon
4. DY357 (usually not LX if bots are on hard or higher because they'll just 1 shot you from across the map)

Also, sometimes instead of a score limit I play to a time limit. Used to play with my mate but he doesn't like the game that much and he used to just enjoy seeing speedsim sprint past (especially if you change the sim's body to the very tall guy, mr blonde, it makes them move even faster).
Good Video, keep doing what you're doing
Thanks - hope to be better soon
I beat 80% of staff ghosts in F-Zero X, back in the day. Now i can barely beat Master mode.
Those were tough times!
little off topic cause its gamecube, but F zero GX was one of those games i coudnt finish on the master difficulty back in the day when it came out (i was around 16 when it came out). i came back to the game as a 22 year old (young adult) to kick the games ass once and for all and could finally enjoy the AX cup, the unlockable only available when one finishes all cups on master difficulty.
I rage quit GX - sega made it too hard IMO
It was hard to get used to the Goldeneye controls again after playing Perfect Dark on xbox so much
That’s also tough! That’s why goldeneye x is so much easier to play
Nagano Winter Olympics, I had plenty of medals and a Gold but now the menus even confuse me. I still play and complete Extreme G, I so hope it gets the Nightdive Treatment.
Haha it’s funny how now the Winter Olympics are up everyone’s mentioning nagano again
