I know it's the obvious choice, but Bob-Omb Battlefield is maybe the best first level of all time. When I think about Super Mario 64, I immediately think about Bob-Omb Battlefield. It's such a genius introduction to the game's mechanics and principles after the castle garden lets you get to grips with the controls for a little bit, and the music is just iconic and one of Koji Kondo's catchiest compositions.

Obvious but obvious for a reason - it’s an awesome opener and if you think about how big the jump was from mario on snes to n64 it’s amazing how super mario 64 turned out

I love Turok 2's opening level, honestly one of the best in the game since many of the later levels are a little too long, confusing and/or repetitive for my taste, while this has the perfect lenght, not to mention awesome music and and overall solid design and good use of the weapons.

Easy answer but I’ll never forget first stepping into the Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time. The haunting but calm music, the skittering of the skultulas on the walls and the echoes of your first steps as you begin to run into the starting area.
Loved how that dungeon helped set the tone and mood for puzzle solving and action for the first 3D game in the series. Legendary.

Diddy Kong Racing's first track, nice and easy to get to grips with the game, and then boom, giant dinosaur walking across the track, something you've never seen in a racing game before. an indication that the course will change throughout the race.

Loved Corneria from Star Fox 64, it introduces you to the team dynamics and really nicely (Slippy being incompetent within the first minute, Peppy giving you advice, etc.) with a pretty cool boss fight at the end. Then there's also the alternative route where you go through the waterfall, finding that for the first time was so satisfying.

Star wars pod racing first level… played it so many times on the demo iMac software, plus it was the stage from the movie (looked damn good in 800x600p on the mac)

Quake II is one of the best games available for the Nintendo 64. Goldeneye 007 Dam mission is very classic, being the underground corridors my favorite part/route. Star Wars Shadows of the Empire is an average game but it would rather be an excellent one if all stages managed to delivered the same quality of the first mission. Another very good video, Glenn. I think you worked with a very good premise for judging the quality of the first stage pointing out the presentation of game mechanics for the player and level design.

So many good opening levels in that system. You already covered 2 of my favorite in both Star Wars, and Golden Eye. Star Wars Hoth opening level being so good, they made a great series over it. But some that werent covered were Mario, just the hub world itself, and Bob-omb battlefield. OoT Kokiri Forest/ Deku tree. THPS the warehouse, start off going down and building up speed and letting you tackle the level . Wave Race 64 Sunny Beach, the level is basic as it gets but it really sets the tone for the entire game. Star Fox Corneria, left a great impression on me. Let's see... These games had awesome first level: *F-Zero X (Wide amazing track, so you know you'll have to quickly learn to adjust your lines for courses to come). *Hybrid Heaven (Real tension and sense of discovery. Game beautifully blens suberb cut -scenes into gameplay where you start and explore). *Star Fox 64 (while first level eventually get's repetive, there is no denying that first level is just as fast paced and good if not better than some later levels). *Super Mario 64 (Even if you count just Castle yard as a "level" or when you get to the actual first level, the set & setting, breathtaking playcontrol makes Mario 64 one of the most enjoyable games to start right at the begining, once again.) *Castlevania 64 (This might seem like a surprise, but animated skeletons dropping their bones, early impressive boss and day/night circle makes this first level exceptional). *Turok 3 had also great start. (Scripted events during gameplay worked wonders)...

This is a really cool idea for a video. I never would have thought about something like this.
Quake 2's first level is pretty cool, and it's nice to grab the super shotgun for level 2. One of the best first person shooters on the system, and the ambient soundtrack fits the game perfectly.
I have to say though that for Goldeneye, I liked the facility level more than the dam. I just had more fun with it. Although the dam was a pretty good level and served as a wonderful intro for the game, the facility was more fun to play IMO. Of course, I MIGHT just be a bit biased since one of my favorite ways to play the multiplayer section with friends was LTK with DK mode and slappers only. That was always a riot.
On the subject of 007, The World Is Not Enough had an interesting first level. Not necessarily due to the level design, but due to a bug that would let you practically skip the first level in about 20 seconds, if that. It was a great way to get to the second level in a hurry.
The valley of fire was very much a memorable first level in Gauntlet Legends, but I played through that so much as I got near the end of the game that I almost got sick of it. It's very much a good way to grind and get powerups to sell to buy permanent stat increases, though.
The first level of Turok 2 was huge and fun. The soundtrack worked really well for the game, too. I didn't care too much for its multiplayer, but it was a fun game. I just hated that the frame rate got really low during areas with a lot of action.

@@n64glennplant I got the remaster for the PC and I love how well it runs. I had played the N64 version once a few years ago and I was in a level where I just killed a few smaller dinosaurs, and when I turned around, the screen was blank... Then the level drew itself in. I couldn't believe it. The game chugged that much.
But yes, I agree. The remaster does a great job of helping you learn how to play the game in the first level. I need to play that game again, I never got very far in it.

You can explore, swim, climb trees etc it's a fun little playground with a great relaxing atmosphere. I couldn't believe how incredible it looked, it was like a dream. When I finally got to play the Tanker level it was everything I ever wanted in an MGS game. Wonderful atmosphere, just perfect gameplay and just beautiful to look at.
As a first level, it was wow. Everything afterwards was merely OK. I know MGS2 is herald as a perfect game by many, but I can't see it like that. I always see it as an unbalanced one.
Also FF7 is unique because it's one of the only RPG's I can think of where the beginning is one of the best parts of the game. Usually in an RPG is one of the most boring or slow.

NGL, this was a kinda weak list, not a terrible list, but I could easily think of several other games that had better intro levels than what you showed here. In particular I find it inconceivable that you would leave out Banjo-Kazooie with Spiral Mountain, that's as big of a deal as the Dam level to GoldenEye. Perfect Dark really should have been in this list too. I know I'm going to sound like I'm leaning a bit too hard towards Rare games (to be fair they were on fire in the N64 era) but the waterfall intro area of Conkers Bad Fur Day was also pretty unforgettable to me. Mario 64's Bomb-omb Battlefield was also a great introduction level. Wave Race's Dolphin Park was great for learning the games mechanics too. This felt more like a top 10 countdown list that got cut short after only the first 5.
