Someewhere (There's a Place for Us) was written by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Soundheim. The song was written for the 1957 Broadway Production of "West Side Story". If you haven't seen it, It is a very well made movie for the time in 1961 and even now. The song is sung by the two protagonists. And the words will take on another meaning when you watch the movie. The song was also in the 2021 Spielberg remake.

Saeed, this IS from the 1950's stage production (and subsequently the 2 film versions) of "West Side Story", an updating of "Romeo & Juliet" where the coupling of 2 people from opposing tribes (in this case, gangs) causes death and destruction. When the 2 people come together in realization that their relationship won't be allowed, there is a ballet reinacting their courtship and then the gang rumble, and a voice sings this song, exemplifying their wishes for 'a place' where they CAN be together. Both film versions drop the ballet, and the first gives the song to Tony & Maria (rightly so) and the new Speilberg version switches everything around and hands this song to one of the adults (originally Doc, the drug store owner where the white gang meets, and a mentor to Tony; now his widow, a Puerto Rican, played by Rita Moreno, who was Anita in the first film)..Streisand did an album of Broadway show tumes in the mid-80's when it was considered uncool, and won the Grammy as vocalist over Tina Turner, Madonna, etc

I always had this fantasy of Barbra Streisand and the Pink Floyd musicians coming up with something together! Perhaps the greatest female voice ever with one of the greatest sounding bands ever could have created something beyond belief? It's just a passing thought but it would have been fascinating!!

No one brings you into a song to experience a lyric as if you're right there with her, like Barbra. Every song is a journey into another story, another message, another dimension. She's often said..."What comes from the heart, goes to the heart," and she's living proof of that.

Couldn't help thinking while listening to you and Barbra, and both your messages, that this song was written over 60 years ago, and yet we're still looking for 'somewhere," still looking for that place where all of us can live together in harmony and unity. Sometimes it's gotten better, but then, like now, it gets worse. You're right... this song will be anthemic for centuries I feel, and fear.

I love this song! This was from one of my favorite albums! I listened to this so many times! She is such a legend.❤❤❤
Thanks Saeed!! I was so lucky to see Barbra 3 times in concert. She didn't sing this song in the first concert, but she sang it in the final 2. I was there at Staples theater in Los Angeles on her CLOSING NIGHT when her tour was being filmed for her HBO concert special which won her several Emmys. The song Somewhere was the closing song. We thought the concert was over, but she came out after many ovations and said, "I know you all are probably really tired, and want to go home (crowd yells "NO"!), but we have to reshoot 5 songs and (crowd flips out) if you wouldn't mind staying around...". So I got to see her sing Somewhere LIVE 3 times, twice in ONE NIGHT!! It was magical magical magical!!!

Greatest singer ever!
This song is always extremely emotional for me to listen to. I'm South African and we sadly have a serious problem with xenophobic violence towards African immigrants/migrant workers.
A good friend of mine is an English teacher at an all girls high school that we both attended ourselves as high school kids. She is analysing the *refugee* poem "Home" by Warsan Shire with her students in class.
I will link the poem below if you don't know it. This is Shire reading the poem herself, I believe. Big trigger warning... It's very difficult to listen to... But it makes such an impact.
She sent me her lesson plan for this class and she said she wants to add this song to the class in her poem analysis because it adds to the song and the song adds to the discussion of violence towards people already fleeing violence.
It's just extremely powerful to add that perspective of forced immigration to a song that calls for a better life for everyone 😭💕😭💕😭💕

I've seen Barbra live twice once in Dublin, Ireland, and second time, London, to say in the company of a living legend would be a huge understatement, live she's incredible No superb ,expensive tickets for me and my wife but worth every penny, very few real legends left but Barbra is definitely one , an eternal voice 👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and yes her live performance of " Piece of Sky" is Jaw dropping I think from 1996 Arrowhead Pond In Anaheim ,California....Brilliant
This is a song from Westside Story which is a Romeo and Juliet type story of loving the “wrong” person. Barbra is a supreme talent. The clarity, pitch, warmth is superb. Celine is the only other singer I’ve heard with such vocal control especially the quieter and softer notes. Beautiful song, beautifully sung.

I strongly suggest you view the You Tube video (use the You Tube browser Barbra 9/11) of Barbra Streisand singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the 2001 Emmy Awards (here on you Tube)- this was a tribute to who were lost on 9/11 - a more beautiful tribute by Barbra alone with a backup choir could not have been more appropriate. If you appreciate anything and want to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11 this will rock your every emotion.
